I
n Guatemala, inadequate public programs, rising crime levels, drastic climate change resulting in natural disasters and hunger, are all driving forces for the massive surge of Guatemalans choosing to leave for the United States. Friendship Bridge’s Microcredit Plus program (microcredit paired with education and health services) has proven to be an effective solution to improve the lives of thousands of clients, in 2018, the organization served over 28,000 women with credit, education and health services. Friendship Bridge has recently opened a new office in Guatemala City. Guatemala has a population of approximately 17 million people. In 2018, more than 815,000 Guatemalans, equivalent to almost 5% of Guatemala’s population, emigrated to the United States. We lost Q70,000 as a result and we were greatly humiliated.” She learned about Friendship Bridge after going through that experience, and with the support of the NGO, her family was able

On Nov. 1 families go to cemeteries to visit and decorate the graves of their loved ones, some take flowers, some carry food the deceased liked in life, there are also candles, prayers, and mem-
ories to be shared. It is a special day when the living and the dead are a family again as Guatemalans believe that the souls of their loved ones are given this day to visit with them again. 41

As part of the Día de Muertos celebration in La Antigua, there is an extraordinary procession, Jesús Sepultado (buried Jesús). It begins at the Escuela de Cristo, as it does during Holy Week, but this time the procession has a different intention. Since 1949 Hermandad de la Escuela de Cristo agreed to hold a solemn procession to offer a posthumous tribute to loved ones, especially those who were a part of the Hermandad and those from Escuela de Cristo who are faithful devotees of Jesús Sepultado. 42

a Antigua Galería de Arte proudly presents the amazing engravings by well-known Guatemalan artist Guillermo Maldonado.
Maldonado was born in Guatemala City in 1961. He studied art at the Guatemalan National School of Fine Arts. Even though he is proficient in different techniques he has chosen wood engraving as his favorite medium of expression. The quality of his engravings is outstanding. Maldonado´s work has been centered in customary scenes, in this way he rescues the humbleness of the craft, mixing the artistic with the artisan when summarizing, in a single physical space, his condition of artist and printer. Classic drawing is the base for his contemporary style since it provides his engravings with

a very subtle elegance that is characteristic to his work. He has participated in many group and individual shows and his works can be found in private collections all over the world. “Engraving as expression, meditation exercise, fight with oneself, a profession of faith, the xylography, its charms, and its battles, nothing is defined except for the adventure, the desire to get lost and meet again, the search for vitality in each cut and contrasts, guided by an idea although inaccuracies and accidents get in the way, engraving gives us the experience of enjoying a primordial technique, typical of a primitive craftsman, of a manual worker, of a worker faithful to his trade, to his failures and satisfactions.” —Guillermo Maldonado 2019.

he feature film BIRD IN THE SKY (2005) 75 min. will be screened in La Antigua Guatemala at the Cooperación Española, 6a avenida Norte (between 3a & 4a calle) / Sala de Cine on Wednesday, October 30 at 6 p.m. The film is in English with Spanish subtitles. Entry is free and open to the public. There will be a question and answer period with the filmmakers after the screening.

BIRD IN THE SKY (2005) 75 min. Combining documentary elements with the finish of a feature film, BIRD IN THE SKY delivers a gritty and poetic view of one man’s spiritual struggle on the 54
streets of NYC. Rob has been given a second chance to right the wrongs of his streetwise past; he must perform a miracle to be saved. His fate lies in his love for a young woman, Kay, who is coping with the loss of her child, and his holy conviction he can relieve
her grief by miraculously bringing back the little girl. The line between good and evil, between crime and miracle, is crossed only by those willing to face God.

evolved from a series of filmed interviews, spiritual trances, intimate confessions and artistic events of my neighbor Rob Lowa Abreu. This process gradually led to a screenplay that combined documentary elements with staged scenes, in which Rob himself plays the lead role. By filming on the streets and using the unpredictability of New York City to our advantage, the movie has an authenticity and immediacy that gives it a special character. The merging of reality and dream sequences blurs the boundary between the conscious and the unconscious and reflects the main theme, the relationship between good and evil. We had no money to make the film but instead of letting the moment pass we decided to shoot with what we had available. When I look at the film now, I see it has a certain technical crudeness, but also, I think we captured a certain time and energy, and I am happy with that. I really don’t think it could have been made any other way. The film was screened in New York City and in Germany but has never been shown in Central America. I am looking forward to seeing what people think.

ispanic Heritage Month is celebrated each year in the United States from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15. This is an opportunity to highlight and commemorate the contributions that American Latinos have made to the country throughout history.

As the Latino demographic has grown to nearly 18 percent (57 million) of the entire population, the movement toward making diversity a priority in corporations, organizations, and in general a public interest, Hispanic Heritage Month has grown in intensity.
My goal of using gourmet cuisine as a platform to educate is beyond skin deep as diversity is a multifaceted term that encompasses much more than ethnicity or nationality. Respect and tolerance ought to be at the top of this movement’s agenda as there are better tactics to establish dialogue or solve any conflict or misunderstanding.
Despite this, education and awareness about Latinos continues to be a necessity as Latino encompasses people from various races, ethnicities, and nationalities. As a chef entrepreneur, it is my mission to help

This is a change in the right direction. Historically Latinos have made great strides and sacrifices that have gone unnoticed or unrecognized. New generations are beginning to change this as Latinos are emerging with greater strength and numbers than in the past in politics, entertainment, education, business, and in many more industries where there was a low number of participation or an absence altogether. Progress has been made but much work still lies ahead especially in the professional women and entrepreneur area. My work encompasses not only edu-

Good reasons for keeping your dog inside by Linda Green, CTC
N
o matter what your justifications for keeping your dog outside at night, I believe there are many more good reasons for keeping him inside with you.
The usual logic cited is security: Your dog is an early warning system by barking and thereby announcing that thieves are attempting to trespass on your property. In Guatemala, there is a lot of noise at night in most neighborhoods. Unfortunately, your dog has no idea that you only want him to bark at intruders and lacking a common language, you will find it quite difficult to explain this to him. Thus, your dog will bark at pretty much any sound or movement at night. 90
This includes cats or rodents on a roof or wall (or on a neighbor’s roof or wall), fireworks, a siren, any passing person, car, bicycle, dog, bird, bat, clouds drifting over the moon, wind rustling tree branches—you get the idea. This random barking generally achieves several things besides waking you up. It is quite enjoyable for the dog. Dogs LIKE barking. Usually, the barking dog sets off a chain reaction, and the whole neighborhood is subjected to a bunch of dogs barking because the other dogs are barking. Over time, you learn to ignore the barking. So, if an intruder does try to come over your wall, you are most likely not going to pay attention to his barking.
Few people can really sleep soundly when a dog is barking outside their window (and the dog, obviously, is not sleeping much either), so you end up tired and sleep-deprived. The barking is probably keeping your neighbors up, too. An even more persuasive reason to keep your dog inside with you is that an intruder can silence your dog in the yard very quickly by tossing poisoned bait to him. Don’t kid yourself that you can poison-proof your dog to ignore food tossed into the yard. You can’t. You could end up with a dead dog and a break-in.

If you are really interested in security, keep the dog inside with you at night, preferably in the same room you sleep in. If the dog is inside the house, he can’t be poisoned. Your dog’s hearing is incredibly sensitive. He will hear someone trying to break in and begin barking. The intruder will be left with the doubt as to where the barker is and how big it is. He will also know that he has lost any element of surprise. This is a much bigger deterrent than a dog loose in a yard. Another benefit is that although your dog hears so much more than you do when he is inside the house he is much less likely to (hear or see) alert to the cat on the fence and bark at it. Dogs also watch our body language and take cues from us. If they see that we are not interested in or alarmed by the bell on the bicycle passing outside, they often quickly learn to ignore the sound and not bark. So, you will both sleep better, and if your dog does bark and wake you, it is probably worth getting up and checking. Finally, from the dog’s point of view, being inside with you only strengthens his bond to you and your family and increases his feeling of belonging and his desire to protect you. Dogs are not solitary animals. They gravitate to other dogs and to people. Especially if you only have one dog, sleeping alone outside and away from you is very hard for him.
