BLACK BUSINESS GUIDE 2017–2018

INCREASE the flow Launch, Support, and Expand African-American Businesses

Profiles and Listings of Black Businesses in Omaha and surrounding areas.

Letter from the Publisher Welcome to our first annual Revive! Black Business Guide! Since publishing our first magazine nine years ago, we have celebrated African-American businesses in Omaha through our print publication, monthly Revive business luncheons and Revive! Black business Expo. This year, for the first time, we have devoted an entire publication to Black businesses in Omaha and its surrounding areas. In this issue, you will find profiles of companies and listings of African-American owned businesses, by category. We will feature more companies on our website and in future print publications. Revive! is also working on an app that will coincide with the Black Business Guide. If you would like to be included in next year’s guide and you are an African-American owned business, licensed in the state of Nebraska or Iowa we would like to hear from you. Find us at reviveomaha.com or on Facebook. Another great opportunity to grow your business is to join us for our Revive Business Luncheon held on the fourth Friday of every month. The luncheon provides a platform for African-American business owners to network, do business with each other and hear from a local or national business speaker. The luncheon is open to existing and emerging businesses or those who are in a field that serve local business owners. We encourage you to support the businesses in this publication and let them know you saw them in the Revive! Black Business Guide. — Yolanda M. Barney, Co-Publisher Revive! Omaha Magazine

1015 North 98th Street, Suite 200, Omaha • 402-390-2480 134 West Broadway, Council Bluffs, IA • 712-322-5503 Owner Frank L. Hayes has much reason to celebrate the thirty-plus years of his accounting firm. He started Hayes and Associates as a way to provide employment opportunities for minorities in the accounting field. Now, thirty-four years later Hayes and Associates is one of the most successful accounting firms in the state of Nebraska, with recognition coming in many ways including Hayes’ induction into the Omaha Business Hall of Fame in 2009. The company has provided employment for over 250 individuals, many of whom have been people of color. After receiving his accounting degree from Creighton University and with over eight years of experience working as a Revenue Agent for the IRS, Hayes ran into issues finding work with local CPA firms. When a managing partner expressed concerns of how clients would react to the fact that Hayes was Black, Hayes knew he had to be the catalyst to change the mindset of many working in the industry. Thankful for the partner’s honesty, Hayes was offered the position and accepted. Having gained valuable work experience with the government and a local CPA firm, Hayes decided to step out and start his own company in 1983. Hayes and Associates has evolved into a full service CPA firm, owned by Frank L. Hayes, along with Brad Yoder and Gregory A. Johnson. The company provides accounting, audit, bookkeeping, tax and consulting services to clients. When asked to define Hayes and Associates, Hayes simply replies, “At Hayes & Associates, it is really not about numbers. It is about our mission. Our mission is to fully engage our clients, empower our team to be their best, and be active contributors to the communities in which we live and work. Over the last thirty-four years, I believe we have lived our mission.”

Brush Beauty Bar Alesia Lester, Owner

5825 North 60th Street 402-312-6855 It’s not often that many of us have an opportunity to work in a field that allows us to creatively express ourselves and give back to others. Alesia Lester has accomplished just that with her business; Beauty Brush Bar. It was at the young age of thirteen, that Lester first discovered she had a passion and talent to style hair. Now twenty-two years later, she is still just as passionate about her field and the fact that she can provide jobs to individuals in her community. Beauty Brush Bar provides hairstyling, hair care services, waxing, hair cutting, nail art and nail care. Lester loves the daily interaction she has with her clients. Sharing her life experience with clients, inspired her to write and publish her book, Life Behind The Chair. The book takes us on her journey through her own adoption, becoming pregnant at fifteen, and ultimately the discovery of her own self-worth. Whether through her book, salon chair or other speaking platforms, she hopes her story inspires others to reach their full potential.

The Cooler Sno-Balls It is often said that every good business is born from a desire to fulfill a need. Sophia Jordan did just that when she started Black Bottom Biscotti. When a local bakery stopped selling her beloved freshly baked Cranberry Pistachio biscotti, Jordan was forced to bake a batch herself. She started selling them in craft shows. In 2012, Jordan opened Black Bottom Biscotti to provide area coffee shops and an ice cream parlour with her fabulous biscotti and scones. Although Black Bottom Biscotti is currently not open to the public, their biscotti can still be purchased at various establishments in the Omaha area and ordered online for delivery. Jordan offers other freshly baked goods such as scones, Rugela, and cookies. They also offer biscotti in a variety of different flavors like Cherry Rosemary, PB & Chocolate, Lemon Blueberry and Chocolate Pistachio, as well as the traditional Almond and Anise. Black Bottom Biscotti caters and delivers their baked goods, coffee and fruit to area businesses and events for breakfast and brunch.

Lamont & Shandora Goolsby, Owners 5921 Ames Avenue, Omaha • 402-881-5994 • pishonboutique.com Pishon Boutique is a women’s clothing store owned by Lamont and Shandora Goolsby. The owners recently moved and relaunched their store on 59th and Ames Street, and are excited to be a part of the North Omaha community. The original store was started in 2015 in Crossroads mall and has since made a name for itself in the Omaha market. The boutique is known for providing exceptional customer service and meeting the individual needs of each customer. Pishon carries trendy, current and edgy fashion. The fact that the store offers such a variety of clothing makes it a one stop shop for women. Customers will find beautiful displays of every day, church, work and evening attire, as well as jewelry, shoes and purses. In continuing with the desire to meet the needs of their clients, they also offer a fashion consulting service. This service includes a personal stylist with a unique eye for fashion who will help individual clients define a personal style. They also provide wardrobe makeovers, organization and management of wardrobes, and personal shopping. The name Pishon was chosen for its Biblical reference to a river of gold. Shandora Goolsby describes the name as, “representing one of the purest and rarest resources on earth: gold, and is parallel to the pure natural beauty of a woman.” Bringing out the natural beauty in each customer is what Pishon Boutique strives to do on a daily basis, whether through their store, the fashion consulting services or their online shopping site.
