Tilapia is not originally from Brazil but it has got adapted very well to Brazilian lagoons; today it represents almost half of the Brazilian continental production of aquaculture. The secretary of Planning Aquaculture at Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture (MPA), Maria Fernanda Nince, highlights the affluence of water resources and climatic conditions enable Brazil to have a great potential to produce this species that will present a rewarding profitability in a short-term. Its taste also helps. “Its smooth flavour and the different processing possibilities are advantages for its acceptance.” Marcela Mataveli, zootechnician and Embrapa’a analyst with a PhD in tilapia’s reproduction, acknowledges a very good adaptation of this African fish to Brazilian properties and its productivity is detached among other species. “One advantage of such high production is the possibility of reducing its final price.” However, to keep being the queen of lagoon, some barriers need to be surpassed. Ricardo Neukirchner, the president of Brazilian Association of Tilapia Farmers, states the need to standardize rules of environmental licensing in Brazilian states. But he perceives the potential of this species: “Our domestic market is growing considerably; whoever extends the production will certainly have demands. If we talk about Brazilian aquaculture, we talk about tilapia. It is like chicken in the aviculture market.”
