Las últimas semanas, han estado marcadas por las constantes lluvias en todo el país. Este fenómeno natural ha causado una disminución de las horas de sol, lo que ha mermado o retrasado la producción estimada para estas fiestas, a pesar del repunte de producción que se preveía.

Como sabemos, nuestra actividad está llena de circunstancias externas que afectan el negocio; clima, fletes, paros, falta de apoyo gubernamental, por mencionar algunas, pero llena también de habilidad para afrontar estas circunstancias, sacar adelante la producción y llegar oportunamente a los mercados del mundo. No nos cansamos de repetir que la capacidad de los empresarios floricultores ecuatorianos es admirable y por eso tenemos el reconocimiento mundial.Hay que seguir buscando optimizar los procesos productivos para ahorrar centavos, que luego se transforman en mucho dinero al final del año.

La implementación de sistemas de monitoreo de plagas y sistemas para medir el riego y las condiciones climáticas dentro del invernadero son claves. El control de calidad del plástico, de los fertilizantes, de los bio estimulantes que usamos deben ser parte importante del trabajo de los técnicos. Los controles en postcosecha y la capacitación al personal lograrán tener y mantener un equipo humano comprometido con la empresa. Pero el brazo más robusto de toda florícola debe ser la parte comercial, en donde está la generadora de recursos para poder cumplir con todos estos procesos.

Otro aspecto importante es lograr formalizar las plantaciones y empresas pequeñas, que han crecido en los últimos años a cifras importantes. Crecer exige comprender que la sostenibilidad de sus negocios está basada en trabajar todos en las mismas condiciones de formalidad: pagar regalías, cumplir las normas sanitarias que exigen los mercados internacionales, pagar sueldos con beneficios sociales de ley, etc. Así garantizarán el crecimiento de sus fincas y dejarán a sus hijos un negocio estable para que continúen produciendo la flor de calidad que saben hacer.

En esta edición continuamos con un artículo de la historia de la floricultura en el país. Les traemos reportajes gráficos de lo que fue la feria de WF&FSA en Miami, las Casas Abiertas de los distintos Breeders: DeRuiter, Plantec y Dummen Orange, donde mostraron sus variedades para el mercado ecuatoriano.

Debemos seguir trabajando en buscar y consolidar el mercado de USA y buscar nuevos mercados. Creemos que los mercados asiáticos, por tener unas economías estables y en crecimiento, serían muy atractivos para nuestras flores. Hay que trabajar en pulir los problemas logísticos y sanitarios para consolidar estos mercados.

The last few weeks have been marked by constant rains throughout the country. This natural phenomenon has caused a decrease in the hours of sunlight, which in turn has diminished or delayed the production estimated for these festivities, despite the expected upturn in production.

As we know, our activity is full of external circumstances that affect the business; climate, freights, strikes, lack of government support, to mention a few, but also filled of the ability to face these circumstances, take production forward, and reach world markets in a timely manner.

We do not tire of repeating that the capacity of Ecuadorian flower growers is admirable and that is why we hold worldwide recognition. We must continue the quest of optimizing production processes in order to save cents, which then add up into a lot of money at the end of the year.

The implementation of pest monitoring systems and systems to measure both irrigation and climate conditions within the greenhouse are key. The quality control of plastic, of fertilizers, and bio stimulants that we use must be an important part of the work carried out by the technical staff. Post-harvest controls and staff training will lead to having and maintaining a team which is committed to the company. But the most robust arm of any flower producing farm must be the commercial part, where the generator of resources rests, in order to be able to comply with all these processes.

Another important aspect is to formalize flower plantations and small businesses, which have grown to significant numbers in recent years. Growing demands understanding that the sustainability of their businesses is based on working under the same conditions of formality: paying royalties, complying with the sanitary standards required by international markets, paying salaries with social benefits according to law, etc. Thus, they will guarantee the growth of their farms and leave their children a stable business for them to continue producing the quality flower they know how to harvest.

In this edition we continue with an article on the history of floriculture in the country. We bring you graphic reports of what was the WF&FSA fair in Miami, the Open Houses of the different Breeders: DeRuiter, Plantec and Dummen Orange, where they showed their varieties for the Ecuadorian market.

We must continue to work on finding and consolidating the US market and looking for new markets. We believe that Asian markets, having stable and growing economies, would be very attractive to our flowers. We must work on improving the logistical and health problems in order to consolidate these markets.
