Punta del Este es ciudad referente de turismo, playa, ocio y actividad culinaria. Luego de un periodo silencioso, en la última década, emprende también un retorno al olvidado ámbito del arte. Cada vez son más los coleccionistas internacionales que eligen a Punta del Este, y sus alrededores, para crear magníficas residencias en las cuales albergan sus preciadas obras. En este contexto de fertilidad, aparece una nueva propuesta que enriquece aún más la escena local. Con sedes en París, Atenas y Ginebra, y luego de instalarse exitosamente en Montevideo, Xippas Arte Contemporáneo, abre sus puertas en el prestigioso edificio Yoo de Punta del Este (Av. Roosvelt y Oslo– Parada 8). ¿Por qué Uruguay? Reno Xippas, responsable del emprendimiento, elige las ciudades que le son familiares y entrañables para instalar sus proyectos. A los siete años llega, junto a su familia, a Uruguay donde vive su niñez y adolescencia abandonando el país, y regresando a Europa, a los veintidós años de edad. En su temprana juventud conecta con el mundo del arte a través de su tío, Alexander Iolas, galerista, coleccionista y referente del surrealismo. Trabaja como ayudante de artistas y comienza así a conocer este mundo desde adentro y desde abajo. Emprendiendo su propio camino e hijo de su era, Xippas apuesta al arte vivo y actual: el arte contemporáneo. En 1989 luego de trabajar con diversos artistas en instalaciones de relieve internacional, inaugura su primera galería en París. De familia griega, en el año 2002, se instala en este país y como continuación de su proyecto inaugura dos nuevas galerías en Atenas. Desde el año 1985, con el retorno de la democracia, pasa los veranos en Uruguay y por razones de carácter sentimental, a modo de reencontrarse con su pasado, decide abrir una galería en Montevideo. En el corriente año abre otra sede en Ginebra, ciudad significativa también en la historia de este singular personaje. Próximo destino Punta del Este Como lienzos en blanco esparcidos por el mundo, todas sus galerías tienen la característica de ser despojadas y minimalistas. En el marco del edificio Yoo, que conjuga arte y diseño de alto nivel, la galería Xippas inaugura su local conformado por una sala de exposiciones, que puede visualizarse por completo desde el exterior, y un showroom para visitas personales o privadas de coleccionistas. La galería se inaugura con una gran muestra colectiva que contará, por un lado, con la presencia de artistas internacionales emblemáticos de la galería y por otro, con artistas emergentes de la escena regional. Se instala así una nueva antena cultural que por primera vez mostrará en Punta los grandes artistas contemporáneos e internacionales de la actualidad.

Punta Del Este is a city known for tourism, beaches, the culinary scene and a leisurely lifestyle. After some time in hiding, the last decade has proven beneficial for artists here, making this beachtown a new hub for the art scene. An ever-growing number of international collectors now choose Punta Del Este, and its bountiful surroundings, to build magnificent homes in which they store even more magnificent works of art Given such fertile ground, there is always something new popping up in this regard. With venues in Paris, Athens and Geneva, and a recently successful gallery in Montevideo, Xippas Contemporary Art has officially opened its doors in the prestigious Yoo building in Punta Del Este (Av. Roosevelt and Oslo, Stop 8). Why Uruguay? Reno Xippas, the man behind the project, chooses cities that are familiar to him and provide an intimate space in which to create. At the age of 7, he and his family arrived in Uruguay; he spent his childhood and adolescence here. At 22, he left the country bound for Europe in hopes of connecting with the international art world via his uncle, Alexander Iolas, gallery owner, collector and authority on surrealism. As an artist’s assistant, Xippas learned about the industry from the ground-up. From there, he developed his own style, blazing a trail for a new type of contemporary artform: living art. In 1989, after having worked with a number of international installation artists, he opened his first gallery in Paris. A descendant of Greece, he moved there in 2002 and expanded his influence by setting up two venues in Athens. Since 1985, and with democracy reinstated in Uruguay, he has spent the summers vacationing here. For sentimental reasons, in an attempt to reconnect with the past, he opened a gallery in Montevideo. A year later, he inaugurated a venue in Geneva. Upcoming destination: Punta del Este Like blank canvases scattered the world over, every one of his galleries can be characterized by its simplicity and sparseness. The Yoo building, where high art and design are fused into its core, the Xippas gallery opens its doors to a venue consisting of an exhibits gallery completely visible from the outside, and a showroom intended for personal visits and private collectors. The gallery’s inauguration will be composed of comprehensive pieces representing iconic international artists affiliated with the gallery, as well as a showing of rising regional artists’ works. Indeed, Xippas brings a new anchor for Punta Del Este, establishing the town as centerpiece for the latest in contemporary and international art.
