Половиной своей славы город обязан архитектору Антонио Гауди. Одна из замечательных работ мастера – дом Бальо. Его особенность – практически полное отсутствие в оформлении прямых линий. Волнистые очертания проявляются как в декоративных деталях фасада, высеченных из тёсанного камня так и в оформлении интерьера. Существует множество толкований символики главного фасада, но, по-видимому, наиболее правильной является интерпретация здания как фигуры гигантского дракона – излюбленного персонажа Гауди.

The legendary region on the North of Spain is famous for its tomatoes, fresh pea, asparagus, fruits and, surely, vine. Consistent and slightly spicy wine from this region is one of the most ambiguous in the whole Europe. Only one thing is clear: give preference to the consistent wines – and it would be hard not to love it. You can find pear, grapefruit aromas and mineral notes in the white kind of rioja, and cherry, blackberry, spice and vanilla notes in the red kind of wine. ................................................................... The stunningly ornate Moorish palace, the Alhambra, is one of Spain’s most visited monuments and it’s not hard to see why. A sprawling complex of palaces surrounded by ornate gardens perched atop of a hill with the snowy peaks of the Sierra Nevada mountains behind, it’s in a spectacular location. The interior is similarly beautiful with romantic intricate Moorish-style decoration around peaceful courtyards contrasting with the powerfully simplistic lines of later vast Baroque additions.

The still unfinished La Sagrada Familia with its amorphous spindly towers and oddly shaped buttresses and roof is the most visited of his creations. Although his residential buildings like the Casa Mila are also wonderful as are his more playful statues and benches in the popular Park Guell. ................................................. Spain has over 8000 kilometers of coastline and bright sunny days for much of the year, so it’s unsurprising that it’s a beach Mecca. From jam-packed tourist beaches to deserted stretches of virgin sand there’s a beach for just about everyone. Some of the most unspoilt and ultrawhite are found on the shores of the Balearic Island of Formentera. The island is located in the Mediterranean Sea and only a couple of hours by boat from the mainland. Ses Illetes is a long curve of white sand, backed by soft dunes with shallow ultramarine seawater lapping its fringes.

Spain’s many vast Gothic cathedrals are testament to the country’s long-held Christian traditions. Perhaps the most spellbinding is the vast one at Santiago de Compostela. It’s a huge building smothered in Baroque swirls, statues and stalagmites. Possibly the most remarkable vista is the Western facade which forms the main entrance, accessed by a magnificent quadruple flight of stairs. The cathedral is also the final destination of the thousands of pilgrims who walk the Way of St James trail each year.

The Romans ruled Spain for over 700 years and there are reminders of their presence all over the country. Perhaps the most remarkable, is the wonderfully preserved aqueduct at Segovia in central Spain. With its 167 arches, at its highest point, it reaches almost 900 feet. A double-height set of graceful arches, it’s 2950 feet long and it’s held together just by the weight of gravity on the carefully carved blocks that comprise it. There is no mortar whatsoever.

A couple of hours south by plane from the Spanish mainland, the Canary Islands are far closer to African shores than European ones and their natural landscape is radically different. Much of the land is volcanic, with steep slopes and dark grey sands on the beaches. At the centre of Tenerife – the most popular of the Canary Islands – stands the mighty Mount Teide a vast snow-capped volcano. It’s great hiking territory and at this altitude the scenery is almost moon-like.

The Plaza de Espana was designed by local architect Anibal Gonzalez for the great 1929 Ibero-American Exhibition that was held in the city and virtually bankrupted it. It’s a feast of ornate colourful towers and colonnades decorated with tiles and motifs. At its centre there’s a huge fountain and canals which visitors can float along on on hired pedalos. It’s such a striking place that it often features in movies – most notably Star Wars Episode 2 – Attack of the Clones. .................................................................................. Every last week of August, the quiet town of Bunol becomes a battlefield. Fortunately, there are no casualties, no injuries, except for the tons of killed tomatoes. The tomato battle lasts for an hour – this is how long it takes for the nearby houses to turn completely red and for people’s legs to go ankle-deep in tomato juice. As this all happens, the whole place is thrown into a frenzy of emotion and total amusement. When the tomato battle is over, many people go to the pool filled with tomato juice. After that the traditional game takes place, which involves a competition with the ham of the famous Iberian Pig at stake. The game ends in an awesome firework.

Carnival is one of the most famous festive events in Spain. Carnivals usually take place in both large cities and small towns, and each event has its own unique features. Carnival is “people’s festival”. This is the time when all bans and limits are lifted, and each participant reincarnates into his/her favorite fabulous character. The only thing people must do during Carnivals is be free and have fun. The Spanish Carnival ends in the “burial of the Sardine”, a ceremony, which symbolizes the spirit of freedom and permissiveness. Despite the grave overtone, this is one of the most vivid, merriest and antic events of the whole celebration. As the Sardine is devoured by the flames, cities are pervaded with cries of sorrow.

HISTORY

istorically, the Canary Islands are part of Spain, which is located 1,500 km north-east of it, while geographically, they are part of the group of volcanic islands, which comprises the Azoreses, the Green Cape Islands and Madeira. The Guanches were the first inhabitants of the islands. The Spanish conquest began in the 15th century. In July 1797, vice admiral Nelson lost his right arm during an attempt to conquer the Santa Crus de Tenerife port, which ended in failure. The first voyage route of the Russians (1803-1806) crossed Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Carles Darvin visited the island as a naturalist during his 1831-1836 round-the-world trip. In 1866, Miklukho Maklay crossed the island during his first trip. In 1982, the Canary Islands become the autonomous republic of Spain, and in 1986 they were accepted into the European Unit on special terms.

My family is my charger, it gives me crazy energy. This is the place where I always find balance and it’s second to none. It’s imperative that the kids enjoy a due amount of care, I simply cannot feel comfortable otherwise. I live for my kids and whatever I do is all about my loved ones. Be it music or sports, your kids are watching you do it and there’s no one for them to follow but you. Your kid is an advanced version of you, which will be there in 20 years. Words of love are our family’s paternoster. I keep saying the words, since my husband and my kids deserve it. Everything should revolve around love. This is the inspiration. There is no such a thing as “falling into depression’’ in my life. I’ve done my uttermost to wake up every morning and feel happy.

I’m very demanding, especially of myself. I’m critical of myself and I know where and what I’m heading for. I’m demanding of others about the job. I’m trying not to be too tough or press too hard. I have only creative people around me and I know they appreciate freedom and space for thought. However, everyone in my team is open for criticism, there are no ways around it. There is a framework and there must be control. It’s not advisable to stretch it out, cause you may get off the track and head in the wrong direction.

At my first job my duty was to organize concerts for a transport company. Launching a high-budget beauty contest or any other entertainment project is a tough job, which I’ve never enjoyed. Then I wouldn’t feel like sitting at the piano or PC and creating. Things change rapidly. I got my severance payment, and that was exactly when Dj Anastasia came upon the world. One year ago I thought I was convinced that I was doing my uttermost and that would be enough. Next came the ‘Sexy Bitches Show’, so we started touring and performing, hired dancers, included acrobatics in our program, and that was a success. Now I’m focusing mainly on music.

. About movement / О движении Моя первая работа – организация концертов для транспортной компании. Построить с ноля конкурс красоты или другое развлекательное мероприятие с большим бюджетом – сложная работа, которая не приносила мне удовольствия. Тогда и не было желания сесть за компьютер или пианино, творить. Все очень быстро меняется. Я уволилась, в этот момент появилась Dj Anastasia. Еще год назад казалось, что я уже делаю свой максимум и этого достаточно. Потом были «Sexy Bitches Show». Создали, начали выступать, добавили артистов, акробатические номера, получили успех. Сейчас мой акцент смещен на музыку.

My husband is a kind of technical manager and I’m more into the arts. First, we used to record other singers. Searching for a good one is time-taking and it’s not always justified. Apart from singer aptitudes, we appreciate an ability to get the point of a song and get it across charismatically. It’s all about energy. It is possible to sing in whisper. It is how you sing it that counts. I was 26 years old when I started singing. My husband, singers, technicians and sound engineers are my team. Sadly or happily, I’ve never had a producer. We’re going to spend the whole summer in studio producing our own material. Like schoolchildren, we are getting ready for September 1, as we have a lot of books to read, homework to do and we must present something in the end.

About the studio / О студии Муж контролирует ее с практической стороны, я отвечаю за творчество. Сначала мы записывали треки других вокалистов. Их поиск отнимает много времени, который не всегда оправдан. Кроме вокала мы ищем умение понимать идею, способность передать характер трека, его харизму. Все дело в энергетике. Песню можно и прошептать, важна подача. В 26 лет лет я начала заниматься вокалом. Моя команда – муж, вокалисты, техники и звукорежиссеры. К счастью или сожалению, продюсера у меня никогда не было. В студии, в работе над собственным продакшном мы проведем лето. Как в школе, планируем встретить 1 сентября с чем-то готовым. Успеть прочитать все нужные книги, сделать все задания, мы же – прийти с готовым продуктом.

STAR I avoid contact with people I don’t like or those who treat me badly. My loved ones bring me joy and pleasure. I can count true friends on the fingers of my hand, but I love them deeply. We say “I love you” to each other every day and we value each other highly. There’s no life without love. You must love everything and everyone. Even if you don’t have a lover, you can love your relatives or your job. It should not be about just one thing. When I wake up in the morning, I say “Oh, life’s so great!”, no matter what’s going on outside – rain, snow, heat or hurricane. Love is all around you – at home, at the office, and it fills you with life.

About friends and love / О друзьях и любви Вне зоны моего общения те, кто неприятен мне или плохо ко мне относится. Близкие приносят радость и удовольствие. Истинных друзей можно пересчитать на пальцах одной руки, но я люблю их всей душой. «Я люблю тебя» – мы говорим друг другу это каждый день, ценим друг друга. Без любви нет ничего живого. Нужно всех любить, все вокруг любить. Если нет любимого человека – всегда можно найти любовь к работе, близким. Не стоит связывать ее к чем-то одним. Просыпаетесь утром – не важно дождь, снег, жарко за окном или ураган. Первое, что я говорю себе: «Ах, как хорошо!». Дома и на рабочем месте – везде должна царить любовь, которая наполняет вас жизнью.

If you have children, love jumps upon your back and it won’t let you go until midnight. I don’t understand those who always hurry to foist their kids off on grandparents or babysitters. Children give us so much energy and love. There’s nothing on earth to hold a candle to this feeling!

Physically, I’m fit enough to compete and win without much effort. If you go in for sports, you have a lot of new interesting acquaintances. Following the Mixed Pairs Bodybuilding Championship and Body Fitness Championship is the career of a bikini model. I used to work out just to be physically fit, and now I’m hooked like an endorphin addict. Two weeks without sports make me feel depressed and rob me of happiness. I cannot write, sing, create or live without sports. To me, sports and music are absolutely integral.

Summer makes many people want to eat their favorite fruits, berries and vegetables. Many people believe that eating fruits and spending much time on the beach is the best way to shed extra kilos and get vitamins. It is, but… If you wish to save your figure in summer, you’d better start beforehand – 1 to 2 months before summer, depending on your condition. You should realize that it is not about losing kilos, but looking better and feeling fitter. Bread-and-water diet is no good idea, since you’ll gain even more weight than you have lost shortly after you start eating again. There are 3 main rules that you should remember:

Eat frequently (4-5 portions each day) and in small portions (150-200 gr each). Your diet should include lean meat, butterfree porridges, vegetables, low fat curd, baked potatoes, fish, boiled eggs, a lot of water and green tea.

Cut down on fatty and starchy foods, as well as foods rich in sugar, salt, vinegar and food additives.

Do 15-to-30-minute cardio workouts each day: take up running, visit a workout room, use a jumping rope, choose your preferred cardio training style. Just don’t be lazy and keep eating and workout diaries, so that you can calculate your daily intake of calories and control your daily workout.

Good health and good looks paired with the understanding that your efforts have been justified make up a great beginning of the summer!

STAR’S ADVICE: how to keep your body in a good shape during summer

СОВЕТ ОТ ЗВЕЗДЫ: как поддержать себя в форме во время летнего сезона С приходом лета многие радуются появлению любимых фруктов ягод овощей. Казалось бы, как удобно летом худеть кушая одни фрукты и получать витамины загорая на пляже. Так то оно и есть, кроме одного «но»... Если вы хотите быть в форме летом, нужно начинать заботиться об этой заранее, а точнее за 1-2 месяца до начала сезона. В зависимости от ваших форм, самое главное – понимать что наша задача не уменьшить количество своих килограмм, а привести фигуру и тонус в порядок. Для этого не надо садится на хлеб и воду, так как ваш организм накопит все утраченные килограммы с лихвой как только вы начнете есть снова. Нужно запомнить 3 главных правила:

Кушать часто (4-5 раз в день), малыми порциями по 150200г. В меню включайте постное мясо, каши без масла, овощи, обезжиренный творог, печеный картофель и рыбу, вареные яйца. Не забывайте пить много воды и зеленого чая.

Отказаться от жира, мучного, всего что содержит сахар и соль, уксус и консерванты.

Кардио тренировки (15-30 мин/день): можно бегать в парке, заниматься на кардио тренажерах в зале, прыгать на скакалке, давать любую удобную вам кардио нагрузку, главное не лениться и вести дневник питания и тренировок, не только для подсчета калорий съеденных за день, но и для контроля проделанной работы.

Как приятно в начале лета не только выглядеть и чувствовать себя хорошо, но и понимать что твой труд оправдался.

Scheduled to open on May 19, this major arts center is expected to present several new exhibitions. On May 19, the arts center presents the first in East Europe solo exhibition by Anish Kapoor, a British sculptor. Located on three floors of the center, the exhibition will continue until September 30. This year, Kiev is joining the community of European cities hosting modern arts forums. On May 17, the First Kiev’s International Biennale of Modern Arts opens. The event will be held every two years in the Mystetsky Arsenal. The Kiev Biennale is named “Best Times, Worst Times…” and studies the cyclical nature of today’s arts and its influence on modern life and our views changing all the time through the prism of the past and the future… The biennale will be managed by David Elliot, a British exhibition curator, whose record includes the foundation of the Moriko Mori Museum in Tokyo, festivals in Sydney and national museums in Stockholm and Istanbul.

The Crossroads is a new triptych ballet under the legendary Myroslav Skorik management, the first opening night of which was included in the program of Days of Europe in Ukraine-2012 celebration program. Exactly The Crossroads is honoured to represent Ukrainian art on the international scene. The performes of Kyiv Modern Ballet Theatre uniting the most resonant national culture representatives come on stage. Philosophic allusions and unexpected plot turns in the creative performance can be written up to the Buiness Book of Records as the shortest ballet in the world. An architect, a specialist in labor on which lies the rigorous mathematical calculation (and the way it was), Gaudi used the outline of the building in the impressionist style. That is, Feature shape, form, but neither the meticulous detail, or structural elements. His main instrument was the imagination, intuition and... computing in mind. One could say it was Einstein in architecture.

Да кто же он такой – АНТОНИО ГАУДИ? Великий архитектор, ниспровергатель авторитетов и законодатель мод. Модернист, творивший вне устоявшихся стилей. Человек, который почти не работал с чертежами. Архитектор, специалист, в основе труда которого лежит скрупулезный математический расчет (а так оно и было), Гауди пользовался набросками здания в импрессионистском стиле. То есть общие очертания, форма, но ни дотошной детализации, ни конструктивных элементов. Главным его инструментом были воображение, интуиция и... вычисления в уме. Можно сказать, он был Эйнштейном в архитектуре.

ome people are convinced that Flamenco has its roots in the Orient, right in the heart of Asia. It is not unlikely that it does, considering its extreme passion and voluptuousness. Meanwhile, what we refer to as the modern Spanish Flamenco is actually the result of Andalusia Gypsy influence, which accounts for its unique original flavor. Flamenco is naturally dramatic, as it emanates tension, conflict, passion and energy touched with restraint. This is the exact reason why many people characterize Flamenco as a dance of both love and protest. Its infinite sincerity and emotionality touches deeply. True Flamenco has no rules and focuses on the dancer’s or singer’s feelings, which are expressed individually. It is hard to dance without a good technical background, and impossible without spiritual investment. It takes months to learn a movement and years to understand and feel a genuine passion. Flamenco rhythms are audible all the way across Spain. You can hear them in small bars and posh night clubs. However, the best place to listen to one is an old tavern in Sevilia and Granada in Andalusia, Flamenco’s true homeland.

Но лучше всего с этой целью заглянуть в старые таверны Севильи и Гранады, ведь истинная родина искусства фламенко – Андалусия.

We have worked a lot to create an ample ground for tourism and attract people to Ukraine. We’ve been working through the holidays, and it’s not about me alone. Designers, programmers, photographers, and the film crew who’s made the films – we all have done a great job.

Having started a tourist business is one of the riskiest steps I’ve ever taken.

Strengthening our family ties by having a good time together is our tradition. I speak 16 languages and I think I’ll be alright in any part of the world.

We have a small zoo with deer, ponies, horses and goats. Also, we are expecting a lama and ostriches to arrive pretty soon. I’m trying to spend more time with my family in our rural home and I’m doing my best to make our life more fun and interesting.

Our life is like an olive tree. The older it is, the bigger the fruits are. I want some plum-sized fruits!

Indeed, tourism is more than just a sightseeing tour around a country. It is a huge basis for employment to expand.

На самом деле, туризм – это отнюдь не демонстрация достопримечательностей определенной страны. Туризм – это масштабная база для увеличения количества рабочих мест.

Мы много трудились, чтобы создать хорошую почву и привлечь туристов в Украину. Работали без выходных, и это не касается только меня. Дизайнеры, программисты, фотографы, съемочная группа, которая работала над фильмами – мы сделали большое дело.

Открыть туристическую компанию – важный бизнеспоступок в моей жизни.

Вместе отдыхать чтобы крепче были семейные узы – у нас есть такая традиция. У меня в запасе 16 языков, думаю, мне будет комфортно в любой точке мира.

Мини-зоопарк с оленями, пони, лошадьми, козами. Скоро привезут ламу и страусов. Я стараюсь проводить свободное время с семьей в нашем загородном доме и создаю все условия, чтобы нам там было уютно и интересно.

Нашу жизнь можно сравнить с оливковым деревом. Чем оно старше, тем крупнее плоды на нем вырастают. Я жду плодов размером со сливу.

Trust is a great thing. If you have lied three times, no one’s going to believe you for the fourth time. Those who carry truth through lifetime are truly rich and wealthy.

Nothing is accidental. Life will give you what you deserve anyway.

I’ve always been sure that I’m going to live in a Slav country, ‘cause this is my destiny. Culture and civilization have taken on a conventional tint. People are the same, and customs, habits and fashion are expanding globally.

The world should be aware there’s a country out there such as Ukraine. It’s a hospitable country and guests are always welcome here. There’s a lot of place to live, food to eat and sights to see. It takes a strong hotel business network, and we are still short of it.

Many Ukrainian tourists keep checking in at the same hotels in Egypt and Turkey. The reason is quite simple: they like it there. Then, why not make this country likable too? Foreigners are used to seeing Ukrainians in their countries, but they don’t go to Ukraine.

I’ve lived in a lot of cities and countries. Wherever I go, I respect local customs and traditions, ‘cause this is sacred to me.

When a person feels like he/she needs to pray, he/she looks up at the sky. There’s no conflict between world religions. There is only one God.

The church does not recognize faith healers, but it does allow people to treat other people. If God has endowed me with a talent, I’m going to use it. Call me a doc or a voodoo!

Случайно в жизни ничего не происходит. Жизнь обязательно даст вам то, что вы заслуживаете.

Я всегда знал, что буду жить в славянской стране, это моя судьба. Культура и цивилизация сейчас уже сродни условности. Люди везде одинаковые, а обычаи, привычки и мода становятся глобальными.

Мир должен узнать об Украине. Это гостеприимная страна, которая способна принимать гостей. Здесь есть где жить, что кушать, на что посмотреть. Для этого нужен хорошо развитый гостиничный бизнес. Этого нам так не хватает.

Многие украинские туристы каждый год возвращаются в одни и те же отели в Египте и Турции. Причина проста – им там уютно. Почему бы не создать уют и в собственной стране? Иностранцы привыкли видеть украинцев у себя в гостях, а сами не бывают в Украине.

Я жил в разных городах и странах. Где бы я ни был, всегда с пониманием относился к местным обычаям, они для меня святы.

Когда человек чувствует необходимость молиться – он обращается к небесам. Мировые религии не противоречат друг другу. Бог для всех один.

Церковь не признает целителей, но не запрещает лечить людей. Если Бог дал мне дар лечить – я буду его использовать. Как врач или знахарь, называйте как угодно.

Horchata is one of the most ancient Valencian soft drinks which is still produced nowadays. It looks similar to milk or cream, and it’s made of chufa – the earth almond. Legend tells that horchata was originally produced from almond or barley, but after Spanish lands were conquered by Sudan Arabs, cultivating chufa became common there. At that time the classic recipe of this drink was born – horchata de chufa. This nut-flavored soft drink is served cold throughout Spain. If you come to Valencia, don’t forget to visit one of the oldest Horchaterias in the world – “Daniel”, where traditional Spanish buns called fartons are served with this drink.

So, what were your first impressions from the arts? Do you remember your first encounter with the values of the arts or, better say, fashion? Well, I can’t remember myself out of fashion. I began to draw and paint as a child and I’ve always enjoyed new and stimulating things. Then I entered the University of Arts. Those were the 1990s, and there was no abundance of information available such as this. There was no IT, social networks, and it would take a handful of tricks to find a catalog or magazine. My dad was an arts man, so we had a good library, and that was the beginning of my education. In this interview, you said that you had used to make clothes and accessories for your friends in your kitchen. How did you know this was going to be your profession? Well, I think everyone passes through this kitchen-sewing stage someday. It weren’t actually clothes that I was starting with. First, I went in for textile decoration and interior design; later, I worked as a window display designer in DIO Company. That was the kitchensewing time, as I was designing ornaments for my friends and working as a freelance stylist. Some of your last pieces were inspired by the Jeffrey Campbell shoemaking brand. You also said that you were inspired by Joan of Arc and the Middle Ages. Does that mean that you draw inspiration from personalities and images? First, you are inspired by something, such as music, movies, strong personalities or brave actions. Then you have to live with the inspiration, analyze it, and then you get a new idea. It is not until you have a collection to look at that the realization dawns upon you. It is the collection that reflects the inspirer’s strong points and pushes you toward the transformation.

Lena Ivanova is one of the few fashion designers who are worshipped far outside Ukraine. Being the owner of the IVANOVA brand, she knows an ideal customer when she sees him/her. She goes deep into the underlines of various epochs and is intent on unifying the Great Depression and rock trends.

Лена Иванова – одна из немногих украинских дизайнеров, которую любят далеко за пределами станы. Владелица бренда IVANOVA знает своего идеального клиента, вникает в подкладочную часть моды разных эпох, а в новой коллекции намерена объединить Великую Депрессию и рок.

Какими были ваши первые впечатления от искусства? Первое столкновение с художественными ценностями, с модой, если угодно? Я не помню себя вне моды. Рисовать я начала с раннего детства, всегда интересовалась чем-то новым, развивающим. Дальше поступила в художественный университет. Это были 90-е годы, когда не было такого изобилия информации, как сейчас. Не было интернета, социальных сетей, приходилось изгаляться, находить каталоги, журналы. Мой отец занимался искусством, поэтому у нас дома была неплохая библиотека. Свое изучение арта я начала именно там. В одном из интервью вы упомянули, что часто шили одежду и аксессуары для друзей на своей кухне. В какой момент вы решили, что это станет профессией? Мне кажется, период шитья на кухне был у всех. Первые шаги в профессиональном плане не были связаны с одеждой. Я занималась текстильным декорированием и декорированием интерьеров, позже – декор витрин в корпорации «ДИО». В это время я уже не прекращала параллельно заниматься модой, как раз на кухне, декорировала себе и подругам украшения, работала стилистом на фрилансе. МОДА I think, traditionally I’m not, but non-traditionally – I am. I have my own confession and I believe in my own God. Do you have your own idea about an ideal female customer? Is there any generalized character of a woman you would like to work for? Well, I can say that I have several ideal customers. Some of them have been around for many years, others have come around recently. They’re all easy-going and quick to accept new ideas, and they give me inspiration. Actually, they’re my muses, and I don’t usually have any trouble sewing for them. I always avoid contact with hard-tempered people who I cannot work well with. Ukrainian fashion industry is often criticized for lack of new ideas and high prices. What can you say about that? These are links of the same chain. There are lots of ideas, but it takes a bit of strength to hold your line and bring them into realization. Many creative people choose the shortest path and create plebeslap-it-up products, which go like hot cakes. New ideas often fail. Many people simply do not dare get off the beaten track, and their ideas often get shelved for good. We have problems with the industry. We cannot sell clothes abroad or purchase fabric outside Ukraine due to extortionate taxes. Therefore, our fashion business is still far from progressing. Who are the Ukrainian Designer’s (generalized image) main competitors in countries with booming fashion industry? Are they renowned designers or just democratic western fashion brands? Well, it is mass market, I guess. Competition is a very good thing. However, managers and artists may regard it differently. For example, an employee designer of a fashion house is most likely to have a viewpoint contrary to the director’s. The former is busy doing his/her job and he/she’s doing it well and the piece sells quickly. Competition is but the last thing he/she cares for. However, the manager is most likely to refer to diagrams, statistics and the main competitors, whose actions he/she is tracking. I spent my last weekend touring Kiev’s luxury and low-end stores. Unfortunately, the assortment does not seem to have ever held a candle to what we can see in European stores, and the quality of fabric leaves much to be desired. Most likely, this is due to lack of market strategy. What epoch is the most inspiring for you? Different times have different inspirations. However, the 1700s run through my spirit like a golden thread. It’s all about royal plots, waiting ladies’ cambric underwear and canvas skirts worn by old time simple tradesladies, not just the glamorous gowns or roses in the hair. All that was so exquisite those days!

Are you religious?

Вы религиозный человек? Думаю, я не религиозна в традиционном аспекте, но религиозна в нетрадиционном. У меня свой бог и своя религия. Есть ли у вас общее представление о том, как выглядит ваша идеальная клиентка? Некий собирательный образ женщины, для которой вы творите? Скажу больше – у меня есть несколько идеальных клиенток. С какими-то мы вместе уже много лет, некоторые появились недавно. Все они легкие на подъем, быстро принимают новые идеи, вдохновляют меня. Для них не сложно творить, шить, они мои музы. Я стараюсь, чтобы в моем окружении не было тяжелых, не соответствующих моему духу людей. Украинскую модную индустрию часто ругают. Мол, мало новых идей, цены высокие. Что скажете? Это все звенья одной цепочки. Идей не мало, просто нужно быть смелым, на определенном этапе стоять на своем, чтобы эти идеи были воплощены в жизнь. Многие творческие люди идут по кратчайшему пути и выдают то, что 100% продается, что «пипл хавает». Ведь новые идеи могут не сработать на перспективу. Их зачастую либо боятся, либо тихо создают и складывают в шкаф, идя дальше по проторенной дорожке. Индустрия хромает. Большие налоговые тарифы не позволяют легко отправлять одежду за рубеж или безболезненно ввозить текстиль и фурнитуру в Украину. Получаем неразвитый фэшн-бизнес, цепочка замыкается. Кто главный конкурент Украинского Дизайнера (собирательный образ) в странах с развитой модной индустрией: именитые дизайнеры или демократичные западные бренды одежды? Скорее всего, это масс-маркет. Вообще, конкуренция – это же очень хорошо. Но и чувствовать ее управленец и творческий человек может по разному. В конкретном доме моды директор и дизайнер скажут вам совершенно противоположные вещи. Один сам себе творит, у него это хорошо получается, товар находит своего покупателя, конкуренция если и есть, то где-то не рядом с ним. Владелец бизнеса же укажет на графики и статистику, быстро назовет ближайших соперников, действия которых они отслеживают. На прошлых выходных я сделала тур и прогулялась по киевским магазинам как люксовых брендов, так и недорогих популярных марок. Ассортимент наших магазинов всегда далеко не в лучшую сторону отличается от представленных товаров таких же магазинов в Европе. Кроме этого, могу отметить очень плохое качество тканей. Возможно, в этом также виноват неразвитый рынок.

Do you remember your first show? Do you remember the stress and did you have aby “aftershock”? It was a long time ago, and I was too young to be worried or think about what was going to come out of that. I did eventually make it, but the whole thing was a sort of “just for fun” to me. That was a far cry from what I feel now. Besides, fashion media is only budding, and it was not until recently that interesting and important people began to attend shows. Now we can invite people with a knack for fashion industry. They seem interested in me and what I’m doing, and it is extremely important for me to hear what they say after the show. Seven years ago people attended shows just for fun. What can you say about today’s fashion bloggers? Is it possible in this country or there’s no choice for them but to look toward West Europe and the USA? There they are often more respected than slick media guys, right? Every time I visit my Facebook account I see lots of new URLs and read fashion bloggers’ (not only western ones) posts, just in passing. Indeed, there are few worthwhile bloggers even abroad, who write reviews and share their opinions about shows. They use vivid pictures and get the palm by posting them before magazines do. Therefore, many people read them just like magazines. Boris Lozhkin, the chairman of the Ukranian Media Holding, has signed a license agreement with the Condé Nast International publishing house. Does that mean that Ukraine is on the verge of having its own national “vogue edition”? Does our budding market really need this “Fashion Bible”? Are we ready for that? I think it takes about ten issues to make an opinion. If the editors focus on the luxury segment, we’ll end up with just another good ad catalog. I often read the Russian magazine, and I like the Russian vogue edited in the times of Doletskaya. To my enjoyment, it featured works by young talents. Also, it featured interesting articles about actors and musicians. If the Ukrainian vogue goes that way – great. So far, I’m quite skeptical about the idea of launching a vogue in Ukraine. You rarely attend social events. Do you enjoy visiting these parties or is it part of your job? Sadly, I think it’s a waste of time. I’m always happy to attend events with a good company, I mean people I know with who I can discuss the event. Maybe I’m being impolite a little, but I like it in my workshop and I hate it when I have to rush instead of finishing a sketch. You are often pictured with your faithful dog named Pushkin. Are dogs your hobby? Do you spend a lot of time together? I’ve dreamed about a dog for a long time, and I wanted a big one. It was a mere accident that Pushkin came into my life. I used to

Какая эпоха сейчас вам ближе всего? В разное время вдохновляют разные вещи. Но красной нитью через все мои образы идет XVIII век. Не пышные платья и розы в волосах, а придворные интриги, батистовые нижние рубашки придворных дам или холщовые юбки простых торговок. В то время это было так изысканно. Сейчас же, в пику надоевшим ярким краскам, мне захотелось какого-то рока. Аскетизм, черный цвет, что-то взять от 30-х годов прошлого века, времен Великой Депрессии, что-то от силы и маскулинности 80-х. Помните свой первый показ? Тревоги, переживания, первые эмоции «после»? Первый показ у меня был давно, и мне кажется я была еще достаточно юна, чтобы особо не переживать и не понимать, чем это все обернется. Конечно, я отработала коллекцию, но это скорее было just for fun, сейчас я переживаю намного больше. Кроме того, только сейчас начал развиваться институт журналистики моды, на показ стали приходить интересные и нужные люди. Появилась возможность приглашать на показ тех, кто действительно разбирается в индустрии моды. Я могу быть им интересна, а то что они скажут после показа – важно для меня. Ведь «там» они сейчас часто популярней глянцевых журналистов? Каждый день заходя на свою страничку в Facebook, я вижу много разных интересных ссылок. Регулярно невольно читаю фешн-блоггеров, и не только западных. На самом деле, их не так уж много даже заграницей, таких, которые пишут обзор, делают свои выводы после показа. Именно картинкой блоги вырывают пальму первенства у глянца, в них появляются самые первые фото. Сейчас к ним многие относятся, как к журналам. Президент УМХ Борис Ложкин подписал лицензионное соглашение с издательским домом Condé Nast International и вскоре в Украине появится собственный Vogue? Нужна ли такая «библия моды» нашему зарождающемуся рынку? Готова ли Украина к нему? Нужно будет посмотреть на первый, а может и на десятый номер, только потом будет составлено мнение. Если это будет новый акцент на luxury – украинский Vogue станет очередным каталогом хорошей рекламы. Я регуляно читаю российское издание. Не буду оригинальна, мне очень нравился Vogue времен Долецкой. Я видела сколько места отводил российский Vogue молодым талантам. Кроме того, они интересно писали об актерах, музыкантах. Если украинский Vogue будет придерживаться этой линии – тогда это только во благо. Но пока я, все же, отношусь к идее издания Vogue в Украине скептически.

This issue focuses on Spain. Are you related to this country in any way? Have you been there? There are lots of things relating me to Spain! My niece has lived there for a long while. We maintain contact and talk a lot about Spain, and I have learnt so much about this country that it feels like I’m standing on her balcony and watching. Unfortunately, I haven’t visited Spain so far, although I’ve been about to many times. I adore France and Italy and I’ve been there many times, but I haven’t been to Spain yet. I hope I’ll make it this year, since my niece is expecting a daughter, so I’m going to become a grandaunt, and I think this is a plausible reason to visit her!

What do you think is the best for the audience book to read, movie to watch or tune to listen to this summer? Please, advice. MOVIE: Come Undone (Cosa voglio di piu, Italy, 2010) I don’t think it belongs to the “art-house” genre, and it’s very unusual. It’s a story about two families, their inner emotions and relationships. MUSIC: artist - Onra, the band; (Chinese) - “Chinoiseries”. That’s what I’m listening to now. The album presents a mix of hard rock and meditation, not bad choice at all. BOOK: History of Fashion in Pictures Now I’m crazy about fashion history. I’ve read a lot, and now I’m choosing close-up photographs and detailed illustrations, so that I could see and evaluate the finishing and fabric processing and explore the underlines of each period.

До него к маленьким собакам я относилась с абсолютным презрением, но он развеял все мифы о «сумочных животных». Я поняла, что любую собаку нужно воспитывать. Воспитывать как зверя, строго, тогда у вас с ним наладятся прекрасные отношения. Сейчас Пушкин – мой компаньон, мне с ним никогда не скучно. Жаль только, что он не разговаривает. Тема нашего номера – Испания. Есть ли что-то, что связывает вас с этой страной. Бывали там? Меня с ней связывает многое! Там очень давно живет моя племянница. he dish gets its name from the pan, without which it would be impossible to be cooked (the term is derived from the Latin term “patella”, which stands for “pan”). Paella is a kind of gastronomical symbol of Spain’s national cuisine. You don’t taste paella means you don’t see and feel the spirit of the country. If you think you have what it takes to cook this meal, there are a few musts for you to know, as the food is highly worshipped by the Spanish. Mandatory. It is mandatory that you use a pan made of steel or cast iron. It must have thick walls and be sufficiently wide, because the layer of rice should not be more than half-inch thick. Rice. It should be medium grain. It is recommended to use iberica, a special sort of Spanish rice. The fried crust – socarrat – that forms at the bottom of the rice layer in the process of cooking is rightfully considered to be the most delicious element of paella. Saffron. It is something, without which paella would look and taste like nothing more than plain rice porridge with a pinch of spice. Fire. It is imperative that the pan is heated evenly and thoroughly. This particular meal is best cooked on wood fire or on a special type of gas burner equipped with a sparger. Spices. First attempts to add meat to fish paella took place in the 1960s and resulted in an exquisite fusion of tastes and flavors. Those were the days when Spain’s tourist industry was booming and blooming. The whole trick of cooking this stunning meal lies in the cook’s adherence to the order, in which components should be added to the meal during the cooking process. Make sure that the flavors are blending into a harmonic mix; it is desirable that fish and meat should be thick and juicy enough and vegetables should be crispy. The abundance of ingredients makes it possible to use all types of wine, including dry pink, young red, white, etc., the best one coming from nowhere less than Valencia!

Без него паэлья мгновенно превратится в обычную рисовую кашу с добавками. Огонь. Блюдо требует равномерного и сильного прогрева дна, лучше всего его готовить или на дровяном огне, или на специальной газовой горелке с рассекателем. Добавки. Смешение вкусов, когда в рыбную паэлью стали добавлять мясо, произошло в шестидесятых годах ХХ века, когда Испания начала переживать настоящий туристический бум. Запахи должны гармонично сочетаться друг с другом, мясо и рыбу желательно добавлять сочными, овощи – хрустящими. he history of corrida goes back to the Bronze Age – to the people of Iberia who lived at Pyrenean peninsula and considered bull a sacred animal. Killing a bull was a ritual murder. Such ceremonies were practiced by other Mediterranean peoples of Old Europe, but it is Spain where this colorful and emotional fight between a man and an animal is considered as an incarnation of the national spirit. The corrida season lasts from late spring to early fall. As a rule, three toreros fight six bulls, so each torero fights two of the bulls. The order of the toreros’ participation in the corrida depends on their experience, which they start gaining from the first day of their initiation into matadors. The corrida opens with a procession called paseillo, during which all participants of the corrida parade before the audience. This parade is headed by two masters of the ceremony – the alguacilillos, who ride their horses across the square to approach the president of the arena (Presidencia) and to ask him for the symbolic keys to the “puerta de los toriles” – special folds where the bulls which will participate in the corrida are held. They are followed by three toreros, each of whom is escorted with three banderilleros and two picadors. The last are the assistants and the mules, who are supposed to take the dead bull away from the arena after the corrida ends. The keys are presented, the procession leaves and the doors to the folds are being opened. The bull runs out to the arena and the fight begins. The torero talks to the bull the whole time while the battle lasts and tries to conquer it. Corrida consists of three parts called tercios, and the beginning of each is signalized by the sound of a bugle. During the first tercio the torero uses his cloak. During the second the banderilleros, the

Banderillas which stay in the bull’s body are called “entertaining” (as their main function is to “entertain” the bull without tiring him out). During the last tercio the torero uses the muleta instead of the cloak to draw a rapier at the end of the fight and to kill the bull. These moments are the hardest part of torero’s job, as he must make the bull attack him and to draw his rapier at the precise moment of the attack, so the blade could pierce straight into the bull’s heart. This is a question of mere seconds, during which the torero is supposed to concentrate and to make a direct hit while the bull attacks his muleta. This process, not the murder of a bull, is called a natural and ephemeral work of art. And it’s still a very honorable mission. If torero’s work, like a precise hit of his rapier which killed a bull on the spot, brings many positive emotions to the audience, the spectators award the brave man. The dead bull’s ears can become a trophy, and the highest form of appreciation of the torero’s work is the bull’s tail. And the biggest honor for the torero is to be carried away on the crowd’s shoulders after the murder of the bull.

Именно эти мгновения являются наиболее трудными в работе тореро, так как он должен заставить быка напасть на него и точно, во время атаки, вонзить свою шпагу в сердце животного. Это вопрос нескольких секунд, во время которых тореро необходимо сконцентрироваться и попасть в определенную точку, в то время, как бык бросается на его мулету. Именно весь этот процесс, а не убийство быка, называют живым и эфемерным произведением искусства. Все-таки это очень почетная миссия. Если труд тореро, как, например, умерщвление быка точным ударом шпаги, доставил публике множество позитивных ощущений, зрители награждают храбреца. Трофеями могут стать уши убитого быка, или же, как наивысшая оценка действиям тореро – его хвост. Наибольшая честь для тореро, после удачного боя, покинуть площадь на плечах толпы.

So what’s happening? Nothing special is happening in the brain when one is procrastinating. You’re not lazy or stupid. It’s natural to feel anxiety before starting to work on something important. Procrastination is an absolutely normal reaction – until it gets out of control. It becomes a problem or a disease only if putting off till tomorrow becomes an ordinary working condition.

There are effective measures against contraproductivity and uselessness, which can help you to get rid of the procrastination step by step: – Give yourself 10 minutes and start doing at least one of the important tasks you’ve planned to accomplish. Only 10 minutes, and then promise yourself a coffee break or some time to listen to music. Practice shows that 80% of people continue working. The most important step is to start walking. – Don’t make big lists of things you should do it you know you can delay any of the points. – Divide the tasks into the more and less important. Don’t keep in mind a bunch of plans for the whole week. Try to start only from those where an immediate approach is absolutely necessary. – Don’t start anything new before you’re done with the old tasks and don’t plan anything in advance if there’s something you promised to do today but haven’t finished yet. Little psychological victories in battles with yourself are the best stimulus for the future activity.

Самое главное – начать. – Не пишите большие списки дел, если вы знаете что способны откладывать каждый из пунктов. – Разделите задачи на «важные» и «срочные». Не держите в голове весь ворох планов на ближайшую неделю. Попробуйте приступить только к тем, которые требуют немедленного вмешательства. – Не начинайте новое дело, не убедившись в том, что закончили предыдущее и не планируйте наперед, если на сегодня осталась пара невыполненных обещаний. Маленькие психологические победы над собой – лучший стимул для последующей активности.

In the 1970s, Friedrich Wolf, a German scientist, discovered an amazing effect that ultraviolet (UV) rays produced on the human skin as they caused it to get tanned just like after a sunbath. A few years later, Friedrich and Yorg Wolf, his brother, founded Cosmedico company, which became a pioneer in the tanning industry. Actually, it was Cocu Chanel who brought artificial tan into fashion as she performed at the Festival de Cannes, 1923, since she suddenly had a little golden skin undertone. She had just returned from a cruise, which ended in embarrassment: the Europe-wide renowned model had gotten sunburn. Not feeling confused at all, Coco arrived at le Creuset seafront in a couple of days where she demonstrated her evenly tanned skin to VIP audience. It was in that summer that the everlasting craze for tanning was kickstarted. First, Wolf’s tanning lamps were popular among sports persons only. In those times, evenly tanned skin was a competition must. In the early 1980, the trend swept across Europe once again and actually launched mass production of “artificial suns”. Today, tanning salons are commonly found in beauty salons, fitness clubs and spa centers in almost every city. Well, is using a tanning bed the right thing to do? What’s good and what’s bad about it? – UV rays produced by today’s advanced lamps are often more beneficial than natural sunrays. The trick is that they are designed to produce well balanced ray bunches with pre-adjusted intensity of rays of particular frequencies and wave characteristics. In tanning salons, it is possible to achieve minimum concentration of harmful rays.

– Minor doses of UV stimulate the functioning of the nerve stem and help nerve cells regenerate. On winter days with short daylight hours, UV can be an excellent antidepressant.

– Excessive US exposure produces an effect contrary to the desired one and entails premature aging. Frequent exposures increase the risk of malignant melanoma.

– UV exposure is contraindicated for people suffering hormonal imbalance and thyroid disorders. – The degree of harm depends on how UV-sensitive your skin is. If you have many freckles and pigmentation spots, you should be more cautious about tanning beds.

– The tanning process triggers the synthesis of Vitamin D, which stimulates phosphor and calcium intake and therefore keeps bones, teeth and sinews strong. – Fake sunlight stimulates the production of serotonin, which keeps you in good mood, improves stress resistance and boosts the exchange of fats in the body. – UV stimulates the activity of protective cells and therefore improves the functioning of the immune system. This makes you impervious to viruses and reduces the risk of getting a cold.

– Чрезмерное потребление ультрафио лета дает обратный же лаемому эффект – преждевременное старение, а при регулярных высоких доза возрастает риск возникновения меланомы.

– Любые УФ-облучения противопоказаны при гормональных нарушениях и заболеваниях щитовидной железы. – Вред загара в солярии зависит от чувствительности кожи к ультрафиолетовым излучениям. Осторожней к искусственному загару стоит относиться людям с большим количеством родинок и пигментных пятен на теле.
