Whether you are a longtime resident or new to our community, this guide is your invitation to get outside, get involved, and make the most of everything Reston has to offer.
Reston is special because recreation, nature, and connection are woven into everyday life. Inside this guide, you will find opportunities for all ages and interests from swimming and fitness classes at our pools to camps and community events, environmental education at Walker Nature Center, and countless ways to enjoy our tennis courts, pickleball courts, trails, and open spaces. There are so many ways to play and connect right here in your own neighborhood.
A cornerstone of life in Reston is our unique system of lakes and trails. These places provide opportunities to paddle, fish, walk, reflect, and support both recreation and environmental stewardship. In this guide, you will see expanded lake-based programming, lake access opportunities, and educational offerings that help members better understand and enjoy these special places.
We are especially proud of our continued work to advance equity and inclusion across Reston’s lake system. In partnership with the Reston Association Lake Equity Working Group, we are taking thoughtful steps to ensure our lakes are welcoming, accessible, and beneficial to all members of our community. This includes increasing programming, enhancing accessibility, improving outreach and education, and creating more opportunities for residents to engage with our lakes in meaningful ways. Reston Association recreation passes are your entry to discovering the many amenities that make Reston so special — from our 15 neighborhood pools with splash pads, slides and spas to our picnic areas, tennis and pickleball courts, pavilions and so much more. What’s more, that recreation pass is included with your annual assessment, meaning if you’re an RA member, you have access to all of these amenities at no additional charge. New passes will be shipped free of charge or can be picked up in our main office during business hours. Single guest passes valid for one day must be purchased at the admission desk at any RA pool or with a court monitor at one of the RA tennis/ pickleball courts. POOL OPERATOR’S LICENSE
Reston Association is proud to offer a Fairfax County-approved Operator Course. This self-study course is open-book, and you are permitted one hour to complete the exam. A score of 90% must be achieved to pass the exam.

SAFETY COURSES AND INSTRUCTOR COURSES
Reston Association is proud to be a provider of American Red Cross Aquatics Courses. Safety certification courses are taught by certified and experienced instructors and include all in-class materials as well as a take-home resuscitation mask. Instructor courses are delivered by certified and experienced instructor trainers, many of whom work full-time in the aquatics field in our community and surrounding jurisdictions.

GROUP SWIM LESSONS
Participants must be of the required age by the first day of class.
Students may need to repeat the last level taken in the previous summer.
Please plan and have alternate choices in mind as availability is limited.
Group swim lessons are non-refundable except for documented medical reasons or family emergencies. A 10% processing fee applies.
Any class canceled by Reston Association will result in a full refund or an opportunity to transfer to another class that meets your needs.
All group lessons are 35 minutes in length except Levels 4 & 5 which are 45 minutes.
Would you prefer more personalized instruction?
RA offers private and semi-private swim lessons throughout the summer. Private lessons provide a one-on-one learning environment between student and instructor, while semi-private lessons accommodate two similar ability students with one instructor.
All ages and skill levels are welcome. Classes are provided in a package of four, 40-minute sessions, scheduled at the convenience of the participant and instructor.
Private swim lesson refunds will be given for any pending sessions that are reported to the Swim Lesson Coordinator.

This fun introduction to the water focuses on creating a joyful and comforting experience for both baby and parent. With guidance from an instructor, families explore the pool together through playful activities that build water familiarity and confidence all centered around having fun in a safe, supportive environment.

This engaging class helps toddlers build early swimming readiness in a fun, supportive environment alongside a parent or caregiver. Children will explore key water skills including water entry, bubble blowing, front kicking, back floating, underwater discovery, and basic water safety practices— all designed to foster comfort and confidence in the pool.
Preschooler and Me
Ages: 3 to 5 years , Parental Participation
Required
This class introduces children to the foundational skills of Youth Swimming 1, making it an ideal starting point for those with minimal or no prior water experience. It’s a supportive option for hesitant swimmers who may find it challenging to separate from a parent. Children begin building confidence and comfort in the water while developing essential swimming skills.
Youth Swimming 1
This class introduces students to the fundamentals of water exploration in a safe and supportive setting. Participants will receive guided instruction
in essential skills such as breath control, floating, kicking, and arm movements, with a strong emphasis on water safety throughout.
All activities are performed with hands-on assistance to ensure comfort and confidence. To participate, students should be able to separate from their parent or guardian and engage cooperatively in a group environment.
Before advancing to the next level, students are expected to demonstrate mastery of the foundational skills introduced in this course.
Safely enter and exit water
Blow bubbles for 3 seconds with mouth and nose fully submerged

In this level, students build on their submersion abilities by practicing independent floating and gliding on both their front and back. They also begin learning the fundamentals of front crawl, back crawl, and treading water—key techniques for confident swimming.
Prerequisite: Students should be comfortable fully submerging their head and blowing bubbles repeatedly and genuinely enjoy the water.
Before advancing to the next level, participants must be able to
demonstrate the following skills independently.

Jump into chest-deep water unassisted
Submerge face/head and recover object from bottom–two times
Bob five times with rhythmic bubble blowing
Submerge face for at least 3 seconds while blowing bubbles with nose and mouth

Youth Swimming 3
Students continue to develop coordination of the front and back crawls, elementary backstroke, rotary breathing, and treading water. All shallow water skills are performed independently and with confidence, as students begin exploring deep water readiness. The following skills should be mastered before moving on to the next level:
Safely enter/exit water by jumping from the side into deep water
Bobbing while moving towards safety in chest-deep water
Retrieve multiple objects from the bottom in chest-deep water
Push off in a streamlined position on front and back, then begin flutter kicking, 3-5 body lengths

Youth Swimming 4
Students will work on technical Improvement of strokes while increasing their endurance in the water by practicing and refining the front and back crawls, elementary backstroke, and breaststroke. Diving fundamentals are also introduced. The majority of this class is conducted in deep water. The following skills should be mastered before moving on to the next level:

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION
Reston Association’s commitment to environmental education is evident through practices, programming and initiatives. Programs are available for every member, from ages 18 months to seniors. Take a guided hike, join a bird walk or trip, attend a special event, explore creeks and lakes and more, all while discovering the natural world.
WALKER NATURE CENTER
Located at 11450 Glade Drive, the Nature Center provides a variety of educational and fun programs. There is free parking, restroom and trail access from dawn to dusk, 365 days a year.

When are camp payments due?
Payment is due in full ONE WEEK prior to the start of the camp session. Failure to pay the balance in full by the due date may result in your child being removed from camp.
After I register my child, how will I receive camp information and notifications?
You MUST make sure that your email and phone number in both RecTrac AND CampDoc are up to date. We will automatically contact the PRIMARY CONTACT, so make adjustments to your account if necessary.
Can I switch to a different camp?
Absolutely, as long as there is space available, and your child is within the camp’s age group. All requests must be in writing to the Camp Registrar at camp@ reston.org.
What is special about Reston Camps?
We have been in operation for over 50 years! We hire camp staff with a passion for working, playing, and teaching children. Many of our staff are local teachers. All staff are CPR/ AED/first aid certified, have passed criminal background checks, a Central Registry Check, fingerprinting, and have had pre-camp training in child abuse, positive behavior management, camp safety, and ongoing training in camp programming.
Does my child need a camp shirt?
Campers attending Mini Day Camp, Junior Day Camp, Day Camp, Sportsters, Adventure Camp and CITs must wear a Reston Camps camp shirt. Past Reston Camps shirts may be worn. Shirts may be purchased in the Member Services office and we highly suggest purchasing multiple shirts so that you don’t have to wash shirts each night.
Do you offer Extended Care?
YES! For an additional fee, we offer afternoon extended care at Browns Chapel for all camps (except ½ day Nature Tots) from 4-5:30 p.m. each day.
I am on vacation for 1 of the 2 weeks of a camp session. Can I get credit for the missed week?
No, we do not prorate for missed days. You must pay for both weeks, but it is ok to only attend one.
What if the camp I want to sign up for has a waitlist?
If a camp session is sold out, you should add your child’s name to the waiting list online on the WebTrac website.
How will I know if space opens on the waitlist?
You will be contacted via email if a space becomes available and your child is next on the waitlist. You may be contacted at any time, right up until the week before the camp starts. You will be given 24 hours to respond before the next person on the waitlist is contacted. If you accept the available spot, you will be expected to pay the deposit (or full payment) within 24 hours, or your registration will be withdrawn.
Do you allow visitors or volunteers at camp?
For the safety and security of our campers and staff, all visitors must be pre-approved by the Camp Director or Recreation Manager.
What if my child has a disability?
Reston Camps welcomes campers with disabilities. To best accommodate your child, please contact Katherine Caffrey, Recreation Manager, at kcaffrey@reston.org so we can schedule a time to meet and discuss your child’s needs.
Will my child go swimming during camp?
All camps go swimming at Reston Association pools during the camp day (except ½ day Nature Tots and Incrediflix). All campers are given a swim test by RA Lifeguards on the first day they visit the pool, every session. Further details will be provided to parents via email prior to the start of camp.
Is camp held during inclement weather?
YES! All camp locations have inclement weather policies and Emergency Action Plans. Indoor locations are available for those camps based outdoors. Please remember, drop-off and pickup locations will always be at the base camp location. On code red days, we increase time in the shade, offer additional water breaks, pool time, and indoor programming. We do not prorate days not attended due to weather.
If my child attends the same camp for multiple weeks, will they be doing the same thing each time?
NO! Junior Day Camp and Day Camp have different camp themes and activities each session. Adventure Camp has new and different adventures each week. Occasionally, campers may visit our more popular activities more than once over the summer, but the weekly schedule will not be the same. Our other camps offer different programming and activities each week. Your camper will meet new friends each session — they will have a great time!
Can my child be in a camp group with all of their friends? There is a question in CampDoc asking parents if there is ONE friend their child would like to be placed in a group with. BOTH parents (the one asking, as well as the one they are requesting to be placed with) MUST fill out this question or the CampDoc program will NOT match them up. We do our best to accommodate special placement requests but due to the many demographics in a camp (age being the most important one) we can not guarantee requests.

Reston Association’s 50+ courts are available for all members and passholders throughout the season, and lessons are available for all ages and skillsets to master their skills. Join a league or just meet up with neighbors for a little fun competition, or check out upcoming tournaments to watch some of the best players in the region.
All Reston Association Junior programs follow the USTA standards for player development by using a low-compression ball progression that scales court size, racquet size, and type of ball to the age and size of the player. The ROGY (Red, Orange, Green, Yellow).
RED
Red ball is named after the red foam/felt balls that are used for players that are 3-7 years old. Red balls bounce lower and move more slowly through the air, giving beginning players a chance to set up and take a good swing. Courts at this level are 36 feet long and 18 feet wide.
ORANGE
Once comfortable at the red level, players move to the Orange ball. Typically for ages 8-10. Orange balls bounce higher and move faster than the Red balls but lower and slower than the green balls. They are a step toward the traditional Yellow tennis ball while remaining fun and manageable for players learning the game. Courts at this level are 60 feet by 21 feet.
GREEN
After Orange, the next level is the green dot. Typically for ages 10-12, the Green ball is very similar to the traditional yellow tennis ball but with a slightly lower compression, so it rebounds lower off the court after a bounce. The Green court is the same dimension as the traditional Yellow court: 78 feet by 27 feet.
YELLOW
The Yellow level is what most people know as traditional tennis. Typically ages 12-adults. The balls, courts and racquets at this level are used in high school, college, adult, and professional levels. The court size is 78 feet by 27 feet.
MUNCHKINS TENNIS
Munchkin’s tennis programs are a fun, play-based introduction to tennis designed for kids ages 3-5.
PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
Focus on fun: The main emphasis is on keeping the children engaged through games, handeye drills and exciting, new experiences in every lesson.
Fundamental skills: Classes develop fundamental athletic abilities such as balance, hand-eye coordination, agility and footwork and basic stroke technique.
Equipment Needed: Programs use specialized, ageappropriate equipment to help children succeed. This exciting new format for learning tennis is designed to bring kids into the game by utilizing specialized equipment, shorter court dimensions and modified scoring — all tailored to age and size. This is an entry-level class for younger children ages 5–8.

Intro to Pickleball

PICKLEBALL STROKE OF THE WEEK
Sharpen your skills one stroke at a time! TENNIS COURT RULES
Who May Use the Courts
RA members with a valid recreation pass.
Guests must have a guest pass and be accompanied by the host member.
Reston Association instructors are the only people permitted to give lessons on a feepaying basis on RA courts.
Priority of Play
COURT CHANGES ARE MADE ON THE HOUR.
Play is limited to one hour for singles and two hours for doubles when other players are waiting.
Players who use the court for a fraction of an hour must vacate on the hour when others are waiting to play.
Reserving A Court
Players must place a recreation pass or racquet/bag on a hook outside of the gate.
Failure to display either a racquet or recreation pass means court is not reserved.
Players reserving courts must remain courtside while waiting to play.
Players may not reserve courts while playing.
Reston Association may reserve courts for lessons, tournaments, junior activity, league play and court rentals.

COURTS ARE TO BE USED FOR TENNIS ONLY.
Players are required to wear tennis shoes when using the courts.
Bicycles, skates, skateboards, baby carriages, playpens, strollers, radios and pets are not allowed on the courts.

Please dispose of trash in proper receptacles.
Rules Enforcement
Reston Association and staff and court monitors will enforce the rules of court play. Failure to adhere to the rules will result in loss of court privileges.

Volunteer Reston (VR), housed under the Reston Association, is a network of community members who come together to complete various projects to improve our surroundings and bring the Reston community together.
Our mission is to enhance Reston Association’s services and programs by matching the varied talents of individuals and groups of all ages, interests and skills to a variety of engaging projects and endeavors.
CORPORATE DAY OF SERVICE
Volunteer Reston provides meaningful group volunteer experiences, partnering with organizations to design corporate projects that are engaging, educational, and fun. Opportunities can range from half day to full day projects, or a fully customized Corporate Day of Service featuring multiple coordinated volunteer activities tailored to your company’s interests on weekdays or weekends.
Through this program, Reston Association (RA) staff plan and manage every aspect of your company’s community service project. The result is a true win win: your team helps address important community needs, and the Friends of Reston (FoR) receives valuable support that strengthens their missions. Some of Volunteer Reston’s corporate partners include Volkswagen Group, Google, Deloitte, Palo Alto, Cornerstone Defense, Salesforce, Dominion Energy, Fannie Mae, Booz Allen, and others.
Corporate Sponsorship starts at $500. All Corporate Day of Service projects are coordinated through Friends of Reston, a 501(c)(3) organization that supports RA initiatives. Donations of $100 or more automatically receive a tax acknowledgement letter from FoR.
NEED SERVICE HOURS FOR SCHOOL?
Many students in Reston and the surrounding areas are required to complete a specific number of community service hours as part of their course or school requirements. Students may be able to finish their service hours by handling shifts at community events, environmental projects, monthly service projects and community cleanups. This also includes scouting organizations that need to complete a community service project.

ENVIRONMENTAL OPPORTUNITIES
Reston Association provides environmental education and stewardship opportunities to volunteers who want to help restore and enhance our community.
Habitat Heroes
A variety of non-native, invasive plant species are present in RA’s natural areas. By their nature, these plants can take over an area quickly and threaten our native plant communities and the wildlife that depends on them.
Join one of our workday events to learn how you can help control non-native, invasive plants and preserve the health of our natural areas! Instructions and tools will be provided. Workdays are led by RA Environmental Resource staff.
For all workdays, RA will train volunteers on how to use tools. Volunteers must pre-register.
All ages are welcome. Children under 13 must be accompanied by a responsible adult during their volunteer service.

Fall Cleanup
Join Reston Association on October 3 from 10 a.m. - Noon for our annual stream and natural area litter cleanup—part of the international Coastal Cleanup and the largest event coordinated by Clean Virginia Waterways.
Each year, tons of trash from our watersheds wash into the Potomac River and the Chesapeake Bay. Help keep Reston beautiful—join RA at Hunters Woods Village Center and Soapstone Drive (7 11). All ages are welcome; children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult. Here’s how you can
make an impact:

FRIENDS OF RESTON FALL 5K
Join us on Sunday, Oct. 4 at Browns Chapel Park for the Friends of Reston (FoR) Fall 5K Fundraiser. Volunteer hours are 7:30–10:00 a.m. Friends of Reston is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that supports the Reston Association through scientific, educational, and charitable projects—including park improvements, camp and tennis scholarships, environmental education, and natural area restoration. Proceeds from the Fall 5K benefit FoR’s Youth Scholarships and Enrichment Fund.
Volunteers receive a race volunteer t-shirt and snacks.
Volunteers must be 14 or older; volunteers under 14 may participate with an accompanying adult.
5K Volunteer Positions
Course Marshals: Help keep runners and walkers safe and on course. Volunteers are stationed along the route and should be comfortable using a loud, clear voice, interacting with participants, and standing/walking during the early morning shift. Time commitment: 7:30–10:00 a.m. Orientation required: Saturday, Oct. 3, 11:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. at Browns Chapel Park.
Water Stop Crew: Be on the other side of the cup! Volunteers arrive about 30 minutes before the race to set up the water station. After participants pass through, volunteers collect used cups, gather trash, and break down tables. Time commitment: 7:30–10:00
The Walker Nature Center is seeking enthusiastic volunteers for its annual Halloween House & Trick or Treat Trail on Friday, Oct. 23 and Saturday, Oct. 24 (5:30–9:30 p.m.) at Walker Nature Center, 11450 Glade Drive. This family friendly event is not a horror show or haunted house—it’s a creative, festive experience filled with costumes, characters, and community fun.
Volunteer details:
Location: Walker Nature Center 11450 Glade Drive, Reston, VA
Volunteer Orientation: Wednesday, October 14, 6–7 p.m. at the Nature Center All trail costumed characters must attend orientation.
Perks: Volunteers receive snacks & food before their shift.
Age Requirement: Volunteers must be 15 or older to serve as trail characters. Other positions 14+.
Volunteer Positions
Trail Costumed Characters: Show your Halloween spirit! Wear a Nature Center–provided costume and hand out treats at a themed station along the trail. Each station includes a costume and a short script with key talking points to help you get into character.
Mascot: Kids love our fullbody, furry Nature Center mascots! Mascot volunteers should have great people skills and be comfortable animating their character without speaking.
Mascot Escort: Assist mascots with getting into costume and guide them safely around the event.
Pumpkin Carving (Great for Busy Volunteers!): Support the event by carving and donating a pumpkin for display at the WNC sundial.
• Drop-off: Monday, Oct. 19–Thursday, Oct. 22, 9 a.m.–5 p.m., on the Nature Center front porch bench.
• Include your name with your pumpkin.
• No carving experience needed.
• Students earn 1 hour of community service. Thank you for helping bring the magic to life!
