RESTON ASSOCIATION ACTIVITIES GUIDE

Welcome to Summer 2025!

Summer is here, and we’re excited to help you make the most of it! Reston Association has a full season of activities for all ages — pools, camps, courts, community events, volunteer opportunities and more.

One of the best parts of living in Reston is the opportunity to get outside and enjoy nature. From miles of scenic trails and open spaces to engaging outdoor programs, there’s something for everyone. Kids can learn to swim, explore nature through hands-on activities, and take part in enriching programs. Families can enjoy our pools, tennis and pickleball courts, special classes, and water-based adventures.

Our Recreation team is excited to bring you both long-time favorites and exciting new offerings this summer. Don’t forget — RA Recreation Passes are available at no cost to all members, including both owners and renters. Just make sure your pass is activated for 2025 so you can enjoy everything Reston has to offer.

We are thrilled to not only have all 15 pools open this year, but also welcome you to enjoy 1300 additional hours of pool time. Our Board of Directors allocated funding to keep pools open longer based on member requests. Dive into more pool time and make the most of your summer days.

New and Highlighted Programs for 2025:

ƒ Water Dance Classes: Get your groove on with line dancing, the Cupid Shuffle, Electric Slide, and Motown moves — all in the pool. Water adds resistance for a low-impact, high-fun workout.

ƒ Pickleball Stroke of the Week: Improve your game by mastering keystrokes each week — perfect for players looking to elevate their skills.

ƒ Smokey Bear Campfire: Celebrate Smokey Bear’s birthday with stories, s’mores, and songs around the campfire. A family favorite.

ƒ Friends of Reston Bench & Tree Program: Honor a loved one or commemorate a special moment through a dedicated bench or tree in one of Reston’s scenic locations.

This year also marks some special milestones and events you won’t want to miss:

ƒ The 30th anniversary of our beloved Senior Movie Day, a treasured tradition celebrating community and connection.

ƒ Aquapalooza summer pool party — grab your tie dye and flower power for this 70s themed high-energy water extravaganza!

ƒ A full lineup of family-friendly activities including movies, tournaments, trail hikes, and ballpark outings.

All Reston Association Junior programs follow the USTA standards for player development by using a low-compression ball progression that scales court size, racquet size, and type of ball to the age and size of the player. The ROGY (Red, Orange, Green, Yellow).

RED

Red ball is named after the red foam/felt balls that are used for players that are 3-7 years old. Red balls bounce lower and move more slowly through the air, giving beginning players a chance to set up and take a good swing. Courts at this level are 36 feet long and 18 feet wide.

ORANGE

Once comfortable at the red level, players move to the Orange ball. Typically for ages 8-10. Orange balls bounce higher and move faster than the Red balls but lower and slower than the green balls. They are a step toward the traditional Yellow tennis ball while remaining fun and manageable for players learning the game. Courts at this level are 60 feet by 21 feet.

GREEN

After Orange, the next level is the green dot. Typically for ages 10-12, the Green ball is very similar to the traditional yellow tennis ball but with a slightly lower compression, so it rebounds lower off the court after a bounce. The Green court is the same dimension as the traditional Yellow court: 78 feet by 27 feet.

YELLOW

The Yellow level is what most people know as traditional tennis. Typically ages 12-adults. The balls, courts and racquets at this level are used in high school, college, adult, and professional levels. The court size is 78 feet by 27 feet.

MUNCHKINS TENNIS

This exciting new format for learning tennis is designed to bring kids into the game by utilizing shorter court dimensions. VOLUNTEER RESTON

JOIN VOLUNTEER RESTON

Volunteer Reston (VR), housed under the Reston Association, is a network of community members who come together to complete various projects to improve our surroundings and bring the Reston community together.

Our mission is to enhance Reston Association’s services and programs by matching the varied talents of individuals and groups of all ages, interests and skills to various engaging projects and endeavors.

NEED SERVICE HOURS FOR SCHOOL?

Many students in Reston and the surrounding area must perform a specific number of community service hours for their course or school requirements. Volunteer Reston is a great way to fulfill these hours. Students may be able to finish their service hours by handling shifts at community events, environmental projects, monthly service projects and community cleanups. This also includes scouting organizations that need to complete a community service project.

Contact us to get involved by sharing your talents and skills with others. We can always use a helping hand at our community events, environmental projects, and events at the Nature Center. We understand that people have different availability, so you can serve in an ongoing position or just serve at a one-time event. Reston Association provides environmental education and stewardship opportunities to volunteers who want to help restore and enhance our community.

ENVIRONMENTAL

OPPORTUNITIES

Habitat Heroes

This removal opportunity involves removing invasive species and non-native plants throughout our natural areas, allowing native plants to thrive. We’ll provide tools, like loppers and weed wrenches, or you can bring your own. This project is rewarding for individuals or groups, including kids 13 years old or younger, if accompanied by a parent or guardian.

For All Workdays: Training provided onsite. Gloves & tools provided. Volunteers must pre-register.

All ages are welcome. Children under 13 must be accompanied by a responsible adult during their volunteer service.

Fall Cleanup

Saturday, October 4

Join the Reston Association for the annual fall cleanup, in partnership with Clean Virginia Waterways.

Volunteer groups or a primary contact can meet at the ‘pitstop’ at RA Central Services Facility — 12250 Sunset Hills Road, Reston between 9:00 a.m. and noon to pick up supplies, snacks, and learn more about the harmful impacts of litter. From there, individuals and groups can proceed to their designated cleanup location.

This event is a great opportunity for community organizations — such as Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, church

groups, families, students seeking service hours, and individual volunteers — to give back to the environment.

All necessary materials, including gloves, trash grabbers, and bags, will be provided by Reston Association.

To volunteer, contact Ha Brock at ha@reston.org

Stream Monitoring Program

Age Requirement: All ages are welcome. Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult.

If interested, join our volunteer monitor email distribution list to receive notices of upcoming monitoring dates. Email watershed@reston.org with the message “add me to the stream monitors list” to begin receiving emails.

RA welcomes new volunteers to assist with stream monitoring at several locations throughout Reston. Get involved with a small team during all seasons to collect data and identify insects to assess the health of Reston’s streams, or attend a one-time stream monitoring workshop to learn about the program. Not only do you get to learn about Reston’s streams, but it also provides an opportunity to make new friends. Our program utilizes the Virginia Save Our Streams (VA SOS) method of assessing the water quality in a stream. Based on the type and diversity of aquatic insects found in the stream, you will be able to assess the ecological conditions of the stream. This is known as biological monitoring and is recognized nationally as a reliable indicator of water quality.
