EXPERIENCE TENNIS & PICKLEBALL
All Reston Association Junior programs follow the USTA standards for player development by using a low-compression ball progression that scales court size, racquet size, and type of ball to the age and size of the player. The ROGY (Red, Orange, Green, Yellow).
RED
Red ball is named after the red foam/felt balls that are used for players that are 3-7 years old. Red balls bounce lower and move more slowly through the air, giving beginning players a chance to set up and take a good swing. Courts at this level are 36 feet long and 18 feet wide.
ORANGE
GREEN
After Orange, the next level is the green dot. Typically for ages 10-12, the Green ball is very similar to the traditional yellow tennis ball but with a slightly lower compression, so it rebounds lower off the court after a bounce. The Green court is the same dimension as the traditional Yellow court: 78 feet by 27 feet.
MUNCHKINS TENNIS
Munchkin’s tennis programs are a fun, play-based introduction to tennis designed for kids ages 3-5.
PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
YELLOW
Focus on fun: The main emphasis is on keeping the children engaged through games, handeye drills and exciting, new experiences in every lesson.
Once comfortable at the red level, players move to the Orange ball. Typically for ages 8-10. Orange balls bounce higher and move faster than the Red balls but lower and slower than the green balls. They are a step toward the traditional Yellow tennis ball while remaining fun and manageable for players learning the game. Courts at this level are 60 feet by 21 feet.
The Yellow level is what most people know as traditional tennis. Typically ages 12-adults. The balls, courts and racquets at this level are used in high professional levels. The court

Who May Use the Courts
RA members with a valid recreation pass.
Guests must have a guest pass and be accompanied by the host member.
Reston Association instructors are the only people permitted to give lessons on a feepaying basis on RA courts.
Priority of Play
COURT CHANGES ARE MADE ON THE HOUR.
Play is limited to one hour for singles and two hours for doubles when other players are waiting.
Players who use the court for a fraction of an hour must vacate on the hour when others are waiting to play.
Reserving A Court
Players must place a recreation pass or racquet/bag on a hook outside of the gate.
Failure to display either a racquet or recreation pass means court is not reserved.
Players reserving courts must remain courtside while waiting to play.
Players may not reserve courts while playing.
Reston Association may reserve courts for lessons, tournaments, junior activity, league play and court rentals.
Check our online calendar at www.reston. org for each individual tennis court daily reservation.
Players are required to wear tennis shoes when using the courts.
Bicycles, skates, skateboards, baby carriages, playpens, strollers, radios and pets are not allowed on the courts.
Children who are not playing tennis are not allowed on the courts.
Please dispose of trash in proper receptacles.
Rules Enforcement
Reston Association and staff and court monitors will enforce the rules of court play. Failure to adhere to the rules will result in loss of court privileges.

When are camp payments due?

After I register my child, how will I receive camp information and notifications?
You MUST make sure that your email and phone number in both RecTrac AND CampDoc are up to date. We will automatically contact the PRIMARY CONTACT, so make adjustments to your account if necessary.
Can I switch to a different camp?
Absolutely, as long as there is space available, and your child is within the camp’s age group. All requests must be in writing to the Camp Registrar at camp@ reston.org.
What is special about Reston Camps?
We have been in operation for over 50 years! We hire camp staff with a passion for working, playing, and teaching children. Many of our staff are local teachers. All staff are CPR/ AED/first aid certified, have passed criminal background checks, a Central Registry Check, fingerprinting, and have had pre-camp training in child abuse, positive behavior management, camp safety, and ongoing training in camp programming.
Does my child need a camp shirt?
Campers attending Mini Day Camp, Junior Day Camp, Day Camp, Sportsters, Adventure Camp and CITs must wear a Reston Camps camp shirt. Past Reston Camps shirts may be worn. Shirts may be purchased in the Member Services office and we highly suggest purchasing multiple shirts so that you don’t have to wash shirts each night.
Do you offer Extended Care?
YES! For an additional fee, we offer afternoon extended care at Browns Chapel for all camps (except ½ day Nature Tots) from 4-5:30 p.m. each day.
I am on vacation for 1 of the 2 weeks of a camp session. Can I get credit for the missed week?
No, we do not prorate for missed days. You must pay for both weeks, but it is ok to only attend one.
What if the camp I want to sign up for has a waitlist?
If a camp session is sold out, you should add your child’s name to the waiting list online on the WebTrac website.
How will I know if space opens on the waitlist?
You will be contacted via email if a space becomes available and your child is next on the waitlist. You may be contacted at any time, right up until the week before the camp starts. You will be given 24 hours to respond before the next person on the waitlist is contacted. If you accept the available spot, you will be expected to pay the deposit (or full payment) within 24 hours, or your registration will be withdrawn.
Do you allow visitors or volunteers at camp?
For the safety and security of our campers and staff, all visitors must be pre-approved by the Camp Director or Recreation Manager.
What if my child has a disability?
Reston Camps welcomes campers with disabilities. To best accommodate your child, please contact Katherine Caffrey, Recreation Manager, at kcaffrey@reston.org so we can schedule a time to meet and discuss your child’s needs.
Will my child go swimming during camp?
All camps go swimming at Reston Association pools during the camp day (except ½ day Nature Tots and Incrediflix). All campers are given a swim test by RA Lifeguards on the first day they visit the pool, every session. Further details will be provided to parents via email prior to the start of camp.
Is camp held during inclement weather?
YES! All camp locations have inclement weather policies and Emergency Action Plans. Indoor locations are available for those camps based outdoors. Please remember, drop-off and pickup locations will always be at the base camp location. On code red days, we increase time in the shade, offer additional water breaks, pool time, and indoor programming. We do not prorate days not attended due to weather.
If my child attends the same camp for multiple weeks, will they be doing the same thing each time?
NO! Junior Day Camp and Day Camp have different camp themes and activities each session. Adventure Camp has new and different adventures each week. Occasionally, campers may visit our more popular activities more than once over the summer, but the weekly schedule will not be the same. Our other camps offer different programming and activities each week. Your camper will meet new friends each session — they will have a great time!
Can my child be in a camp group with all of their friends? There is a question in CampDoc asking parents if there is ONE friend their child would like to be placed in a group with. BOTH parents (the one asking, as well as the one they are requesting to be placed with) MUST fill out this question or the CampDoc program will NOT match them up. We do our best to accommodate special placement requests but due to the many demographics in a camp (age being the most important one) we can not guarantee requests.

CORPORATE DAY OF SERVICE
The VR Corporate Volunteer Program offers corporations expertise in community service by creating customized, hands-on group volunteer projects that complement team-building, leadership development, and philanthropy initiatives. Through this program, Reston Association staff will fully develop and coordinate all aspects of your company’s community service volunteer project.
NEED SERVICE HOURS FOR SCHOOL?
Many students in Reston and the surrounding areas are required to complete a specific number of community service hours as part of their course or school requirements. Volunteer Reston is a great way to fulfill these hours. Students may be able to finish their service hours by handling shifts at community events, environmental projects, monthly service projects and community cleanups. This also includes scouting organizations that need to complete a community service project.
Contact us to get involved by sharing your talents and skills with others; we can always use a helping hand at our community events, environmental projects and events at the Nature Center. We understand that people have different availabilities, so you can serve in an ongoing position or just serve at a onetime event.

RA welcomes new volunteers to assist with stream monitoring at several locations throughout Reston. Get involved with a small team during all seasons to collect data and identify insects to assess the health of Reston’s streams or attend a one-time stream monitoring workshop to learn about the program.
Not only do you get to learn about Reston’s streams, but it also provides an opportunity to make new friends. Our program utilizes the Virginia Save Our Streams (VA SOS) method of assessing the water quality in a stream. Based on the type and diversity of aquatic insects found in the stream, you will be able to assess the ecological conditions of the streams. This is known as biological monitoring and is recognized nationally as a reliable indicator of water quality.

Brown’s Chapel

A very cozy and affordable facility close to home. Its tall ceilings provide excellent acoustics, and its park-like grounds offer a lovely setting.
The facility has chairs to seat 50 people, three tables, restroom facilities, heating, air conditioning and ample parking.

The Lake House

Size: 1,490 square feet
The Lake House is Reston Association’s community building on Lake Newport. It is available for members and non-members year round.
Rates: $1000 - 2500 per 4 hour block.

Located at the 72-acre Walker Nature Center, the multipurpose room has a capacity of 60 people standing and 40 people seated. The facility is equipped with nine 6-foot tables, 60 folding chairs, restrooms, heat/air conditioning, microwave, sinks and serving counter.
