At The Center of The Bloom petals always seem to peel up and out forever opening towards the sun protectively surrounding the bits that are most tender the pieces needed to reproduce regenerate revise the story of drying and dying on the road leading towards a certain end a tale now redirected towards an uncertain beginning sometimes colors become muted but the fragrance is more boldly sensed dying flowers let their presence be known filling rooms and hallways with their pungent perfume they continue to slowly open to take up more space staking claims to larger areas before letting go giving up returning to the elements from which they grew we are just like the flowers this is our story too. The

onderland is a real place whenever you watch Reesa Renee perform. We caught up with Reesa Renee coming off of her Adventure on the “Wonderland Tour” and she graced us with an interview. She has an aura that puts you at ease and makes you want to be happy and have fun. Her smile is engaging and her persona onstage is supa fly with a supa dupa Afro that demands just as much attention. She’s got a natural beauty that shines through like the sun when it’s breaking through after a storm. She inspires and ignites a generation with her humility and tenacity. In just a few short years she has stepped into her Greatness and there is no turning back for the DC Metropolitan Native. Reesa Renee dreams to make a lasting impact on the community through music, and has done a great job as of yet, in the pursuit of bringing her artistry to life. We are ecstatic to introduce you to Ms. Reesa Renee. R.A.m: Your bio is Amazing and a Light of InSpiration, as one of our New Young SHEroes on the scene; you truly are living and walking in your purpose. Can you describe that feeling? RR: I am honored to be considered a "SHEro". It certainly is an amazing category to be thrown into for someone, as I myself have been inspired by a many of she/heroes. I am glad that I can supply, what they have supplied and currently supply, from me to someone else. I've always hoped that my dream and journey could inspire another to inspire another and so on and so forth (lol). R.A.m: What are your most Creative Moments as a Music ARTist? RR: I feel my most creative moments happen when I make myself uncomfortable (lol) it’s like when you set a stage for God to show up. A Dream is a dream but it takes a whole heck of alot of courage to actually pursue in actions. As a creative you have to internally have the faith to take a chance on yourself. "Got Me Loose" was the first song I ever wrote and when it happened - mind you it literally fell out - I knew and felt in my heart it was good. But following that I was sketchy on whether it was a fluke moment or whether I had the ability to write like for real, for real. So I took that chance on myself - 3.5 years later I had "Reelease".

R.A.m: We all know Chuck Brown as the GodFather of Go-Go, and you have been blessed to share the stage with him. How has he influenced your music and life as an ARTist? RR: Oh man, where do I start! I truly admire Chuck Brown and am so grateful I had the opportunity to work in such close proximity with him. I mean, I have been a fan since FOREVER (lol) rewind back to high school before I even discovered my purpose. Chuck, along with Jill Scott, taught me what music felt like, how to move a crowd and involve them. I consciously involve alot of the characteristics I've learned from watching/listening to him in the creative process of creating my LIVE show experience. R.A.m: Having recently come off of your #WonderLandCoolTour & releasing your first Album, how does it feel to have that under your belt? RR: It feels GREAT, but, like the perfectionist that I am, I am on to the next thing! I try and give myself time to appreciate the accomplishments, and I do - but I am still a ways away from my goals as a creative. The #WonderlandCoolTour gave me the opportunity to step from behind the microphone and work with some AMAZING creatives to put on the most elaborate show of my career thus far. It's like a dog that get it's first taste of blood (lol) I want more! R.A.m: As such a Responsible ARTist, where do you envision yourself in the next 5 years? RR: On tours, billboards, movies, magazines, community centers, t-shirts, Oprah (lol)! I see myself WORKING! I strive to be amongst the greats, from my area and beyond, and by great I am not weighing based on wealth, although that is a necessary vehicle to fund things, but rather the impact had from generation to generation. R.A.m: Are there any changes within the music industry that you would like to see take place or implement yourself? RR: Uh, I couldn't say but what I CAN say is I am SO very proud of where the "R&B/NeoSoul" [don't even think that's a fair label] genre is going. Miguel & Janelle Monae to highlight but not limit have brought a FUNKY style to the genre. I think it helps me as well because I don't fit into that cookie cutter sound either. I like that people have opened up to this new sound. R.A.m: How have you or will you enhance and save lives with our youth? RR: By continuing to be me I suppose. I think we do more harm to ourselves trying to intentionally save people; I think the best success stories are those that happen subconsciously. I have a big heart, which can be BOTH a blessing and a curse (lol) so I know no matter how busy I get or what network of people I am around I will fine SOMETHING to Love on. Unfortunately, there will always be a conflict, an injustice, a tragedy and such things will always affect us as caring people. Thus, I will always and forever do my part in uplifting those affected; it is impossible to disconnect from the people. 10

NOV-DEC 2013 ResponsibleARTistry.com Issue IV

R.A.m: Who are your life influences or mentors? RR: My mother is my Life Influence - she is the definition of strength. I've seen her battle so much diversity and still WIN - as a minority [being both Black & Female] she has achieved so many things in her corporate life that many can't say they've experienced. Not to mention she beat cancer and maintained her schedule as a mom and corporate woman amidst the chemotherapy and "bad days". She is so thorough - it inspires me - if nothing else I know what kind of blood I have in me. R.A.m: Are there any goals you currently have that you can share with us? RR: Progress, Live & have the courage to continue to Love amidst all the highs and lows. R.A.m. How does it feel to have performed in the legendary “Apollo Theater” in Harlem and have the people love your Original Music? RR: Flippin AWESOME!!! There are soooo many names that have graced that stage and rubbed that log (lol) you can go ahead and add in "Reesa Renee"!!! R.A.m: How would you describe your journey thus far in one word? RR: Colorful R.A.m: Do you consider yourself to be a TrendSetter or GameChanger? If so, please tell us how? RR: I consider myself a Creative; I express my ART, my SELF in everything I do. I can only hope to inspire others as well as support others in doing just that. One example is I make it a point to support independent clothing companies, coupling that with my shoe fetish (which is now fueled by my sponsor Sports Zone Elite) and you have my style haha. I also make it a point to work outside of my comfort zone hence my sponsorship with a natural cosmetics line “Luv Mineral Cosmetics”. All this to say, I've always been a comfy kinda girl, kind of stuck in a this is how I carry myself mode. Stepping into my artistry I had to find a way to be rebellious yet play by the rules. You HAVE to wear make-up and you HAVE to be sexy, well maybe not have to be, (haha) but I strive to be (lol). I've always wanted to get across that I LOVE my femininity but I also love to be comfortable, so slaps on the make-up and throws on the sneakers and off to the show we go! Haha so grateful the people embrace me and my style; if you listen back to my song "Wonderland Cool" there's the story right there. 11

R.A.m: Are there any projects you are currently creating/promoting that you’d like to share with us? RR: Not promoting YET but definitely very soon, you can stay in the loop at www.ReesaRenee.com or follow me on any of my social media @ReesaRenee & @ReesaNews R.A.m: How do you want your legacy to be remembered? RR: We are all vessels carrying a message; my message is articulated through my music of course but more importantly through my being. Every person and environment I come in contact with I enter with the intention of capturing something and giving something. I feel each moment is made for that exchange whether for a season or for an eternity. Life gives many things, pains, joys, gifts, curses and its purpose is all in how we respond to those things. We either cave in and the message is lost, or stand strong through the pain and continue delivering the message. I strive to be that light no matter the obstacle because I've seen the LIFE that comes from it. My hope is that my legacy is more than just my work and my ART but more about the impact it has. May my journey communicate a timeless message of Inspiration, Success through Adversity, Perseverance, & Hope. This Is Your Brain on Music (Review by Heather Jones)

“Tamar Braxton” Love And War (Album Review) Love and War is the second studio album released by Tamar Braxton. Many reality viewers and Tamartians (Tamar Fans) have received ample opportunities to get a glimpse inside the life of the lovely and talented Tamar Braxton, but this album gives you so much more. On this album Tamar takes the time to showcase her talents and skills using a gimmicky approach that many believed she would because of her over the top personality. The album opens up with “the One”, which takes on a journey into the past with a Mariah Carey “Fantasy” themed felt video. As soon as the music starts you are ready to dance, then you hear that Biggie Smalls voice, “It was all a dream” and you feel like you went back to the 90’s- hands in the air as you vibe to the beat and sing along. Following this she takes you on an emotional roller coaster of the single life and being in the public eye (“Tip Toe”), then to being in a relationship and deciding between staying and fighting for love or letting go (“Stay or Fight”). Now you have reached your next destination, “Love and War.” The first single released off of the album reminds you of a new age version of Toni Braxton. The song continues the fight of making it through the hard times of a relationship to continue building the bond through the struggles together. Many relationships in today’s generation could learn from this song. It takes hard work and dedication to make a relationship last. There are good times and bad, victories and failures, but through it all in a strong bond there is always that person there to share it with you. This leads into “All the Way Home” -a great ballad!!!! “All the Way Home” is for about Tamar clearing her head after a disagreement Once the fog clears, she realizes that she has a special love waiting for her at home. The journey continues with “One on One Fun,” “She Did That,” and “Hot Sugar.” These three upbeat tracks are for once you get home; they are about reenergizing and adding the spice back into the relationship. The titles give all the explanation needed. “Pieces” and “Where It Hurts” are about not wanting part of the person in a relationship, but wanting them to be fully committed and available in the relationship! She is even willing to help fix what someone else before her broke. In Love and War you have to know the value of what you are fighting for and protecting to order to want to go above and beyond and give all that you have in you for a victory. With “Prettiest Girl” She expresses that she knows what she’s protecting and fighting for because of all the value he adds to her life through encouragement, motivation, smiles, and much more. Value is not always about what can be bought but what can make you feel complete. The album wraps up with two more slow ballads, “Sound of Love” and “White Candle”. Then the final track “Thank You Lord” is my favorite on the entire album! Tamar sings about giving her heart in relationships, being used and abused emotionally, and then realizing how God came and made everything right. She sings about remembering how during the hard and sad times she didn’t think things would change, but she could not imagine where she might be without God. A lot of her tracks are encouraging and reflective, but this one by far makes you think, smile, cry, and feel motivated. Life is like Love and War, you have your ups and downs, victories and losses, signs and signals, plans and tactics; but if you don’t have the understanding and relationship with God (the Commander in Chief) you will not win! So enjoy your fight called life…Learn to Love Hard and Pray Harder in War. 16

Public Relations

Your story is one thing, communicating it is our thing!

DIY PR What do you do when you don’t have a budget for public relations? You do it yourself, of course!

r.a.m. presents -The ART of Communication

The Basics Of Public Relations We put a call out to our readers asking, “Is there something specific you as a small business owner would like to know that relates to public relations?” The responses were overwhelming! The majority of you simply wanted to know, “Exactly, what is public relations?” First, this is an excellent question and second, Responsible ARTistry Magazine will address what many consider as the ‘mysterious profession’. Let us begin with the basics. Although the public relations profession has been around for years, the public relations industry is so vast that the profession is often misunderstood. Consider the textbook definition of public relations: Public Relations (PR) “is the practice of managing the flow of information between an individual or an organization and the public.” I admit this definition isn’t readily relatable; in spite of this, the definition includes the basics and basis of public relations. Overall, the pr industry does have specific and distinct objectives.

3 Primary Objectives Of PR As a Public Relations Professional or a Publicist, we select the market we desire to serve. However, irrespective of the segment served, collectively all pr professionals and publicists are striving to accomplish the same objectives for their clients. 1.

2.

3.

Communicate your story – is the simplest of definitions I provide when consulting with prospects about our company’s services. Everyone has a story and it is our mission to deliver your story to your targeted market. The method of accomplishing this task various from the pocket we serve, to the culture of our company, to the individual style of the professional. Nonetheless, each professional is endeavoring to communicate your story to your public! Create conversational interest – is the most rewarding of all the objectives! Consider if you are a restaurant owner, aren’t you proud when a customer talks about your signature dish and encourages others to try it? As a boutique owner, aren’t you thrilled when a prospect comes in inquiring of an item her co-worker purchased? PR placements are designed to build upon product and service and create conversational interest to generate those experiences! Build brand awareness – is the ultimate of all objectives! PR campaigns are designed to raise awareness of you(r), company, product, or service. Can you identify the Nike or Target logo right away? Of course, because both are the essence of building brand awareness! As a small business owner, it is essential to consider long term goals of your company and then invest in the pr methods to begin creating the imprints!

In every aspect, public relations include gaining exposure. The intention of pr is one of persuasion, creating a desired viewpoint to reflect positively on your company. The objective of public relations is interchangeable whether it is an entrepreneur or a major organization. This is the beauty of the industry! Thanks to our readers for taking us ‘back to the basics’! The second most popular request was to answer questions surrounding social media. Stay tuned, that’s in our next issue!
