Content Provided By Living In Monmouth Magazine/Living In Media LLC

The Alfred Hopkins-designed, French Normandy inspired gentleman’s farm located on 13 acres in Middletown, New Jersey, was to be part of a much bigger estate known as Cobble Close Farm. It was built in the late 1920s by the children of Isidor and Ida Straus, the early Macy’s department store owners. The farm is a divided ownership in a co-op by 4 owners all living in various homes on this sprawling estate. Located in Middletown with a Red Bank mailing address. Through the years the original buildings were re-imagined into historically inspired residences paying homage to the property’s historic provenance. The owners have spent many wonderful years overseeing, enjoying and protecting the integrity of the property. The results of that passion can be seen in every corner and cobblestone of this unique property. While strolling the impressive grounds, the whispers of generations of colorful owners, visitors, countless craftsman and farm hands can almost be heard. Integrity of architecture and design is evident throughout the 13 acre property of Cobble Close Farm. The architecture is inspired by French Norman design from the 11th and 12th centuries, often associated with castles

and chateaus. Many of the buildings were created from elements of European estates and shipped and reassembled to form the current plan. The buildings are surrounded by fountains and formal landscaping, as well as a pool and cabana. Belgian cobblestones ground the center courtyard design of Cobble Close Farm. Architecturally accurate arches and connecting elements

integrate the different areas and buildings within the complex of buildings and decorative elements. The magnificent attention to detail and finishes cannot be under-estimated on this architecturally rich property’s exterior surfaces. Terracotta roofing and stone block construction (some of which was cast from molds made

from original Norman block) make an undeniable statement and a feeling that these buildings have been here for hundreds of years and were always part of the Cobble Close Farm estate. Bronze and copper gutter downspouts feature fairy tale characters and stories of a fantastical nature. How appropriate, since the entire property has somehow transcended the practical working farm concept of the original owner and is now a fantasy wonderland of a kind that has been featured in numerous commercials, a feature film and fashion magazine layouts. You can imagine strolling through. The largest unit, originally the caretaker’s home, is listed for sale with romantic fireplaces, unique architectural details, including the chapel and the tower. Located near the pond though the courtyard and over the bridge this home is situated in the most bucolic spot overlooking the pastures. A Taste of France:

The French Market

by Judy O’Gorman Alvarez A little piece of France can be found right in Rumson. It may not be on a trendy Parisian street on the Left Bank, or a country village in Provence, but the Gallic feel is unmistaken. The French Market has been a cozy place for breads, crepes, gourmet desserts, and French-specialty food items since its opening in June. But now with its newly expanded addition, the novel market offers charming artifacts, wares and trappings that invite customers to bring that French feel to their homes and not just their palates. “I had this idea for about eight years,” said Carli Windsor, one of the market’s three owners. She and longtime friend Pamela Best, a fashion design and merchandising professional, tossed about the idea of creating a market that provided an entire French experience. Pamela’s husband Robert Smith, an interior designer, embraced the plan and a partnership was born. When the site of the old Le Bon Panier became available to rent, the trio decided it was the perfect location. It seemed only fitting a café offering French-inspired foods would find a home in the same spot. 18

The first step was to put the food market in place and see how it was received. Carli already had a pastry chef in mind: Laurent Chavenet. Chef Laurent, who was born and trained in France, met Carli and her husband Brian years ago on Staten Island where the chef ran his own restaurant. “I always wanted to do something and knew one day he’d be part of it,” said Carli. “Finally when we approached him, showed him the location, he shared our vision.” With its brass detailing, exposed ceilings and marble counters, the market offers breakfast, lunch and juices, as well as fresh baked goods, pastry and cheese cases, and specialty items. It was an instant hit. Next, the team created a greenhouse to showcase delightful accented pieces for the home and garden. As principal of a New York City-based design/build firm, Robert was able to lend his design background, including his experience with greenhouse plants. The result is a sunny, rustic room that lends itself to all things relating to French fine living: decorative platters, books on French country living, an assortment of fragrant soaps or unique garden accents.

“I love everything from France,” Carli said, “and I always dreamed I’d open a place like this. Where you can eat beautiful food, and you’ve got beautiful things for your kitchen and garden — the whole lifestyle.” A native of South Africa, Carli lives with her husband and three children in Fair Haven. “I’m a lifelong creative person,” said Robert Smith, who lives in Neptune and Manhattan. He and Pamela “have the same interests as Carli in antiques and the aesthetics of French living.” The market and its staff have become a part of the community, so much that visitors came to share their grief and bewilderment over the recent shootings in Paris and to make sure Chef Laurent’s family was not in harm’s way. (They are well; they live in southern France.) With sophisticated, well-traveled residents, a Europeanstyle market like this one has been embraced and, if not literally, than figuratively, kissed on both cheeks. “We were aspiring for something special,” Carli said. “Something that allows you to stop and take in the moment. Hopefully we’ve created it.”

Asked & Answered:

Gary Allen Industries

Gary Allen Industries is a trusted leader in the modular home building industry and their business has evolved by incorporating real estate development, as well. We spoke with company owner and Rumson resident, Gary Casazza, recently to learn of his perspective on this fast growing part of the new homes industry and why building modular is a viable alternative to traditional “stick built” homes. How long have you been in the construction/home building business? I have been in the construction business for more than forty years, initially doing commercial construction for our family food business. Gary Allen Modular has been in business for about twelve years. In the last couple of years, we started a New York division and have helped to reconstruct homes for Sandy victims in New Jersey and New York. In addition, we still do major addition and renovation work on existing homes and recently have lifted several local Sandy homes. Did you ever do “stick built” homes? Yes. I have done several stick built homes. I built a few in Rumson. Sometimes due to irregular lots or tight spaces a modular will just not work on a site. But the simplicity of construction, time efficiency and superior quality of modular building is something I find very 24

appealing. Modular homes today are not what they were in the past, and are virtually custom built homes, built in a factory controlled environment, rather than on site. Why is modular building, in your opinion, a good idea? Once a modular home is completed on your site, it is virtually impossible to distinguish it from a traditional stick built home. It is a good idea because it is a quicker process than traditional stick-built homes and the quality of construction is better than a stick built home, because they are built stronger since they have to withstand the rigor of transportation. What are the benefits of building modular for the homebuyer? Today’s reality is that true modular construction is both technically advanced and of high quality. Modular homes today are generally custom built specific to architect’s plans or customers can choose the ease and cost benefits by selecting one of the hundreds of standard models which modular home manufacturers offer today, which can also be customized to a customer’s liking. Modular construction is higher quality than traditional building techniques? Modular home construction has strict quality control standards and homes are built stronger and more energy efficient than traditional stick built homes. A modular home generally contains 30% more lumber than traditional housing and is built with rigorous standards to be able to withstand transporting the modules safely for a long distance. Traveling on the highway simulates hurricane winds and being lifted with a crane simulates earthquake forces. Homes are built using 2x6 studs with the maximum amount of insulation possible. Drywall and sheathing are glue-foamed to framing, creating a structural diaphragm. Bearing walls are built with double- or triple-headers for exceptional strength and rigidity. The installation of floors, roof and wall sheathing is performed under the protection of the modular factory and materials and wood are never subject to warping or damage that can be caused by outdoor weather conditions. In addition, the quality of the construction materials used by modular home manufacturers is better. You sound passionate about it. What’s most important to you personally in building a house? Completing a home that is of excellent quality, functional and comfortable and that they will enjoy for years to come. I pride myself on completing each project on time and on budget, every time. And the process is amazing. The initial planning and design process can be lengthy, but it so satisfying on the day that the modular home is delivered. By the end of the day where there was once an empty lot, a beautiful custom home exists as if it had always been there!

From start to finish. Modular home construction at 5 Lakeside Avenue, Rumson, NJ. 25

Elements of

Style Painted Woodwork By painting the intricately carved woodwork a uniform white, much of the architectural detail that might have been lost with a dark stained finish instead becomes a prominent design feature throughout. The turned balusters, hand-tooled newel posts, Victorian fretwork and boxed beam ceilings come to life and help to unify adjacent spaces.

Old and new come together beautifully in this Monmouth Beach Victorian, a spacious multilevel home that creates great flow and visual interest by highlighting the structure’s architectural detail, by repeating design elements and integrating new elements that blend and accentuate with some historic features. The homeowners, by making savvy design choices, have created a unique and welcoming space. To see more photos of this home please visit bit.ly/7clubcirmb.

Hanging Chandeliers Delicate chandeliers light up the space and deliver a shabby chic vibe that translates as modern with a vintage sensibility. The juxtaposition of contemporary and classic lights up the space both literally and figuratively!

Cabinetry New cabinetry in the kitchen, multiple baths and even the family room extend the sense of old & new throughout the house.
