CHAPTER 30
SUBMIT TO AUTHORITY “My son, fear the LORD and the king; do not associate with those given to change; for their calamity will rise suddenly, and who knows the ruin those two can bring?” Proverbs 24:21-22
I
want to focus on two things that this last saying can teach us. The first is to submit to authority. It says, “Fear the Lord and fear the King.” Rebellion is an ungodly thing. The original rebel is none other than Satan himself. In our culture it is easy to forget that God is displeased by rebellion. In our movies the hero is almost always rebellious. He is breaking rules and the audience is expected to like him for it. Our culture glorifies rebellion. The Bible does not. In fact it says in 1 Samuel 15:23, “For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft.” Considering whom the original rebel is it shouldn’t be such a surprise. Rebellion is demonic. That is why in 1 Corinthians chapter 11 it says, “A woman should have a sign of authority on her head because of the angels.” I remember years ago in Bible school, we didn’t have a clue what that meant.
