Road cutting stopped by residents Vigilant residents are the need of the hour, when civic agencies fail to do their duty. Recently, residents saw indiscriminate road cutting at three places on 24th Main. When they asked for approvals, the workers had none and continued to dig. Eventually, the contractor came on line and said that they were given the work by BESCOM on some central government project called 'Automatic switching or IPDS'. The BBMP assistant executive engineer (AEE) Ananth Raju was called and the road digging was stopped. Later, the work resumed because they indeed had the permission to do it. Later, more than a dozen pits were dug on 24th Main, creating a traffic mess. And they never ended up topping it with bitumen. What's worse, there are still some open pits with wires hanging out in gay abandon. Whether it's a private or government agency, this rule of concretising the road within a few days should be enforced without mercy.

Call Raju to stop illegalities This year, HSR Layout has a new assistant executive engineer. After his predecessor Venkatesh was booted out by no less than chief minister Siddaramaiah for dereliction of duty, Ananth Raju has filled in his shoes. If you have any issue with road and footpath encroachments or desilting of drains or illegal buildings, he is the man to get in touch with. His number is 94485-43601. Welcome, Ananth Raju. Your hands are full.

Potholes are back! This huge pothole on 22nd Cross in Sector 3 is back-breaking. So are the many potholes, big and small on 23rd Cross in Sector 7. Will BBMP engineer Ananth Raju fix these permanently please? HSR has a dubious history with roads. The best roads are re-asphalted and the worst roads are left to fend for themselves. When Residents Watch alerted the CM about it more than two years ago, his office promised to take action. Nothing has happened since. In June last year, the 7th Cross Road in Sector 1 was asphalted for the second time in less than three months. "And the tragedy is that many roads are not asphalted for the last 10 years. If this is not corruption, then what is?" asks resident Kavitha Reddy. Agrees resident Shivaraj: "That's true. In Sector 7, the 11th main, 24th cross road surrounding the BDA park have not been touched despite complaints of innumerable potholes in the last three years."

'Stop encroachment in name of god'

In one case involving one religious trust that had built a temple on government land, the High Court has said that encroachment in the name of god should stop. HSR Layout is the best example of this. Barring Subramanya Shape up, BBMP temple, all other temples are encroachments. Even Subramanya temple has two illegal The BBMP has to find a proper secondary collection point that is right now adjacent to floors. Such is the state of affairs in HSR and this has the full backing of our local netas, the Outer Ring Road in front of Freedom MP Kupendra Reddy and MLA Satish Reddy. International School. "As per the Karnataka The Sai Baba temple in a median park of State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) and Sector 3 is another glaring example. Recently, the Lake Development Authority (LDA) rules, the BBMP cannot have a garbage point in the they tried to extend the temple, but the plan vicinity of any lake, as the storm water drain was shelved when residents protested in the is getting choked and polluted," says resident Residents Watch group. However, the back entrance that was fenced earlier has now Kavitha Reddy. More waste the name of god, they feel no one will question them, leading to rampant encroachis gathering or thrown at the point. Some of ment all around. The authorities don't it is not even HSR waste." Agrees resident Lalithamba BV: "Since it is on outer ring road, support or help the residents on this when it is a vulnerable point. Any one travelling by it's reported to them." Another resident Ravi MR says, "When people throng to such can throw stuff. It stinks most of the time. 'Kill Bills' goes citywide

Residents oppose smokers’ haven

The 'Kill Bills' campaign begun by HSR's Hasiru Mithra group has spread across the city. The resident group removed posters, bills, flex banners and stickers defacing the neighbourhood on innumerable occasions. This inspired the Bangalore Political Action Committee (B.PAC) and they, under the leadership of Shilpa Narayanan, took it across the city. Last year, the HSR team met the BBMP Mayor who committed to conducting weekly drives to remove the bills. But the banner politics continues. We even saw the picture of Kavitha Reddy, the person behind the 'Kill Bills' campaign, in some of the posters erected recently. When questioned, she says, "I am against flex banners and don't want my photo, but they have to use it because of protocol. I have no control over it. I sincerely hope Bengaluru says ‘no’ to these ugly posters, banners, flex, bills, stickers, and end the competitive banner politics played at the cost of the city." We would suggest that the cops prosecute the people whose pictures are shown in the hoardings. This is the only way to usher in accountability. The Election Commission needs another Seshan and BBMP needs another Jairaj to eradicate this visual pollution.

Sector 3 has one Friend's Bakery on 25th Cross. Situated next to residential houses, it has become a smokers' haven even though smoking in public isn't allowed. Health inspector Vinod has fined Rs 5000 on the outlet owner, but to no avail. Says resident Ravi MR: "There are more smokers than before. How can BBMP give license to sell cigarettes in the vicinity of a school? Very sad state of affairs within BBMP. There is a small board that prohibits smoking but serves no purpose to the smokers. The entire stretch of the road is used by smokers to park their vehicles haphazardly. It is a nuisance to pedestrians. How can the bakery owner and building owner be so bold and fearless?" And this smoking ban should apply to all the shops in Parangipalya, Agara and 24th Main too. Vinod, your hands are full with just this job at hand.

Illegal structure demolished

Trucks and travel buses stay away

BBMP contractor Roopesh, though known for all the good work being done, tried to do something illegal. He was building a watchman's shed on a storm water drain and footpath in HSR to prevent night dumping. The plan was to install CCTVs and prevent dumping of mixed garbage near Freedom International School in Sector 4. But the construction was illegal as no one can build anything on a footpath or a storm water drain even if the motive is noble. Therefore, it was demolished following protests from residents. The status quo remains. There is a night vigil by a BBMP worker and those dumping garbage are fined regularly.

Trucks and travel buses were parking en masse on 18th Cross Service Road in Sector 3 for quite some time now. But with the recent profusion of commercial establishments on this road, there is little space for them to park and they have just vanished from the scene. Similarly, even the 19th Main Service Road is largely free of them. The issue of parking by trucks and travel buses was raised at a traffic meet-up way back in June and it's showing results now. Earlier, they would park all night and the whole weekend, making a mess of things. They would turn the area into an open defecating zone and even damage the roads with maintenance repairs and greasing oils.

Road breathes again The Aakruthi Silverline Road at the end of 27th Main took the mickey out of its residents. Championed by Lalithamba BV, a resident of the Aakruthi apartment, she teamed up with the other residents of the area, including Ramakrishna, Kamesh and Sankar, to get the road works going. After months of persuading the authorities, the money was sanctioned in June and the road was relaid in November.

The curious case of 2 bus stops Resident Lalithamba BV is miffed that the feeder buses that made an entry and promptly exited due to faulty planning by the BMTC, are yet to make their appearance. But what has made an appearance is an extra bus stop adjacent to the earlier one. The old bus stop wasn't functioning anyway, so what's the new stop for? To plaster it with pictures of our local netas, ofcourse! When asked by the residents, neither the BBMP nor the corporator is aware of this new development, particularly because not a single bus takes this route. Resident Rajesh Kumar says, "Let this encourage BMTC to start at least two feeder services using the new e-buses." Lalithamba says, "Now this is used more for sleeping by the people. It must be called Sleep Stop and not Bus Stop." 10

Economical and hygienic eatery

Human chain against KCDC

Arogya Ahaara, a fast food joint in Sector 5 behind Greenview hospital is ushering in hygienic cuisine. Their anti plastic rules are impressive. They don't give any plastic containers and even have a board asking their patrons to bring steel containers. And it's economical too. From half cup tea/coffee for Rs 10 to half cup milk for Rs 20 to Rs 25 for dosa and Rs 10 for idli, it's using organic dish washing liquid and a 'world-class dish washer'. Not to mention, a chutney counter that asks you not to waste food. The only concern is that there is hardly any footpath and people tend to park and order, jamming up the road. The restaurant has deployed a security guard to disperse the vehicles, but then, this is something they should have thought of earlier and made adequate parking arrangements or chosen a place that had ample space for parking.

Last month, residents of HSR and its extension areas like Somasundrapalya, Mangammanapalya, Kudlu, Harlur and Hosapalya formed a human chain around the polluting compost plant, Karnataka Compost Development Corporation (KCDC). Says resident Sudipan Mukherjee: "The media guys were telling that they have not seen such a large gathering of people, which is comprised of apolitical and peaceful citizens in the recent past." Adds Kamesh Rastogi: "There were more than 2000 affected people to express their anguish in a democratic and peaceful way." Says resident activist RS Murthy: "I have been a resident of HSR Layout for nearly 18 years. I have not seen such cohesive and mission-conscious people of the neighbourhood supporting the cause." A few days later, residents saw grass burning around the RDF (Refuse Derived Fuel) mountain which is a ticking time bomb. To prevent it from going off, the KCDC has been covering it with mud. By this time, they were supposed to have sent this to cement factories to be used as fuel, but a significant portion of it is yet to be cleared. When the fire broke out last month just like it did last year, the officials kept mum at the fortnightly Joint Action Team meeting. "The fire started around 5pm and the KCDC staff doused it by 6pm using a water tanker. But around 6:30pm, it started again and the fire engines came by 7:15pm to successfully extinguish it," reports resident S Sankar.

Residents stop drainage work

Allege that BBMP's adhoc measures could cause flooding again By QAMAR HJ The diversion of lake water from Somasundrapalya Lake in Kudlu is still in the midst of a controversy. BBMP has resorted to an adhoc solution when a permanent solution is the need of the hour. Last month was no exception. The residents stopped the drain work in front of Nagarjuna Apartments in Sector 2. Says Pooja W, a member of Sector 3 Residents Welfare Association. "Despite objections from residents against the proposed Masterplan 2031, the BBMP has begun the drain work on 27th Cross Road and Government school Road in Sector 3. This connects to the narrow lane of 26th Cross Road which is downhill. Constructing this will cause a disaster in Sector 3 as the drain width is 10 metres and depth is just 7.5 metres. This will eventually connect to a small 3 metre drain on 22nd Cross Road that will submerge the entire locality." Last month, the residents pleaded with the authorities to stop diverting the stormwater drains to 17th main because the area is densely populated and the drains cannot take the extra load. "They should instead connect to 19th Main Service Road. Our larger point to the BBMP is to not connect large storm water drains to small shoulder drains as there is a flow mismatch," says resident Mohan R. The drain work has stopped but the residents worry about the eventual outcome. Right now, the untreated lake water which contains the harmful discharges from the polluting compost plant, KCDC (Karnataka Compost Development Corporation) is entering a storm water drain abutting the rear side of Nagarjuna apartments. This waste water passes through a private property and 12

enters 27th Cross in front of Nagarjuna Apartments. From here, it flows on to 19th Main service road which is further connected to 25th Cross in Sector 3, a low lying area that is worst affected. “The proposed drain width of 17th main by BBMP is 10 feet, but it does not seem to be feasible as there are sewage lines alongside the existing drain,” says the sub committee report by the Sector 3 Residents Welfare Association. “This means that the 10 feet by 7.5 feet drain from 27th cross road could get connected to the existing 3 feet by 6 feet drain on 17th main road leading to floods again. There being too many curves and bends in the route of the drain, the velocity of water flow would be reduced again, leading to floods and rendering the drains unmanageable.”

STOP THE NONSENSE The BBMP should get its act right and ensure that they follow common sense and connect one stormwater drain with another.

Indane, the dinosaur

Pet peeves of one gas consumer and how it should grow up By DEEPA MOHAN OUR FEATURE WRITER IBy received the following email from Indane (the cooking gas supply company of Indian Oil, a government agency). Safety Instructions For LPG Customers: Here are a few tips to use your LPG in the right and safe way: 1. Take delivery of Refill only after checking the weight of the cylinder. Also check the valve or O-ring for leakage. 2. Put the Safety cap on the valve if the cylinder is not in use. 3. Use Suraksha LPG hose of ISI mark. 4. Light the ignition source before opening the burner. 5.Turn off the regulator when not in use. 6. Don’t place the cylinder in water or in a horizontal position to increase evaporation. 7. Don’t keep a refrigerator in the kitchen. 8. Always keep the Emergency Service Cell number handy. I was both amused and angry. 1. How on earth is the ordinary, fussed person-at-home (who might have taken off from the day job) or, in several instances, the domestic help, supposed to check the weight of the cylinder? Will the gas deliveryman co-operate if this has to be done? And what if the weight is less than it should be? 2. In a busy household, this is just not possible. 3. Very often, cylinder deliverymen are happy to sign that the tube is in order in exchange for a little ‘transfer or resources'. 4. I have a gas stove which will ignite only when the gas is flowing. How do I comply with this tip? 5. This one makes sense, and I do follow it… every night. It cannot be switched off all the time in a busy household. 6. Thank you for this information, Indane. I never knew

this could be done. 7. What? Have you seen the size of some of our apartments? Where do you suggest we keep the fridge? Would it not make better sense to have the gas cylinder outside, connected through the wall via the tube? 8. Is Indane able to guarantee a 24x7 response, and let’s say there is a cylinder blast, how many people will remember this? Can it not be printed on every purchase voucher? After decades, Indane is still not able to make or sell a good gas gauge that will tell consumers how much gas remains in the cylinder or a gadget that will shut off the valve in case of a leak. Their list of 'safety measures' is archaic. There used to be an option for the consumer to choose a different agency if the assigned one was not to the consumer’s liking. That option has been withdrawn. Why do we have this terrible dinosaur of an organisation? How do we bring about this much-needed change? © Oorvani Foundation/Open Media Initiative. Habba! Habba!

The festival at Kaikondrahalli Lake hit the right notes By SHILPI SAHU On February 18, 2018, Kaikondrahalli Lake hosted a bunch of events for the fourth time. More than 4000 people from the neighbourhood took part in Kere Habba 2018 that was aimed at raising awareness, increasing community participation and fostering an appreciation of lakes in Bengaluru. This year, the team pushed for a green way to come to the Habba. They encouraged visitors to ‘Cycle to Kere Habba’, avoid parking blues and cut the carbon footprint of the Habba further. While many residents cycled to the venue, many more chose to rent the bicycles at the venue to go around the 2km lake trail. Many local resident artists painted the amphitheatre walls and the main gate security room of the lake in preparation for the event. The day started with a Zumba session. Events included story sessions, participatory wall art, bird walk guided by Madhusudan Shukla, photography sessions and more. The young and the old were encouraged to keep aside their mobile phones and learn to play traditional games, weave, make flower rangolis, meet their neighbours and community volunteers. Author Roopa Pai engaged teens and challenged them to conquering the world. Younger kids were regaled by Vikram Sridhar, the story teller. Soulful music by local band Sufisticate ended the long day. The Habba also witnessed stalls at the ‘Santhe’ as well as NGOs talking about their cause. Organic product owners and home run businesses promoted their services and goods. Kere Habba is a green event and strives towards zero waste footprint. Water can refills with washable steel 16

tumblers were used and visitors were requested to carry their water bottles and shopping bags and segregate waste at source. Kaikondrahalli Lake that was rejuvenated in 2010, receives a footfall of 500 visitors on a weekday and more than a thousand on a weekend. It is the most bio-diverse lake in Bangalore, with local variety of trees, reptiles, butterflies, amphibians and a safe haven for residential and migratory birds. The lake is maintained by MAPSAS (Mahadevpura Parisara Samrakshane Mattu Abhivrudhi Samiti) in partnership with BBMP and corporate sponsors. MAPSAS keeps alive the traditional uses of the lake such as allowing fodder for cattle, fishing and foraging. © Oorvani Foundation/Open Media Initiative. Also available online at citizenmatters.in

OPINION

How to stop conflict of commercialisation

A few measures can address this raging issue By ASHWIN MAHESH In some neighbourhoods, citizens are vexed by an increasing number of bars and pubs, and the dramatic change in the surroundings. There have been various instances of conflict between residents and these establishments, and also a demand that BBMP should address this properly. This is doable, but only if we correctly identify the problems. (a) The first challenge is that people who want to set up the establishments are themselves property owners in the area, which causes discord between the neighbours in terms of what they themselves want. (b) Those letting their properties out to eateries and pubs do not themselves live there. They are seeking to put up a place whose consequences they themselves do not face. (c) Each application is handled on its own technical merit and specifications, without considering the larger picture. While pubs and bars have to be somewhere, we need to ask whether dozens of them need to be located together, or whether there must be limits. (d) There is no sensitivity to the sentiments of people, especially those who have moral objections. While we should not fall into the trap of equating morality with the preferences of individuals, there can be broad sensibilities. For example, whether we really need to have a bar next to a place of religious worship. (e) Amidst all this in NIMBY, the not-in-my-backyard sentiment, that people sometimes have about things they want, as long as they are not intrusive upon

themselves but only on others. There is a way to tackle all this, and only a few simple rules are needed. 1. There must be a total cap on permits in a locality. 2. There must be exclusion zones around an identified set of places in the community. 3. Absentee landlordism should be discouraged. With just these, a lot can be achieved. The question is, why isn’t this done? The answer is simple — land use is often contentious and even more so on lifestyle-linked uses. In all these, there are opportunities for officials and politicians to intermediate themselves in disputes. To avoid the risk of processes being captured by vested interests, it is best to open up the decision-making to the community itself, and to have transparency in all the data. That, along with goals that are agreed at the community scale, is key. Š Oorvani Foundation/Open Media Initiative. Also available online at citizenmatters.in RESIDENTSWATCH.IN

Cycle rentals are now available at many places across HSR Layout, like this one on 19th Main opposite Aishwarya supermarket. Cut the carbon footprint. Cycle your way around the neighbourhood. Don't forget to wear a helmet.

This garbage dump on 25th Cross, 18th A Main near NH Narayana hospital has been beautified by the waste contractors under the able leadership of Roopesh and Anil Benni.

This trailer of a building is coming up on 22nd Cross diagonally opposite HSR Club. How can such monstrosities be permitted by the BBMP? And if it's illegal, topple it now. 18

We are not running out of water yet Here's how water is managed in the city

By VISHWANATH SRIKANTAIAH

[ [ CAUTION This is a positive story but that does not mean steps should not be taken to contain the looming water crisis in many cities. Harvest rains now.

A recent article on British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) website listed Bengaluru among the 11 cities that will go out of water soon. The article said: "Local officials in the southern Indian city have been bamboozled by the growth of new property developments following Bangalore’s rise as a technological hub and are struggling to manage the city’s water and sewage systems. "To make matters worse, the city’s antiquated plumbing needs an urgent upheaval; a report by the national government found that the city loses over half of its drinking water to waste. Like China, India struggles with water pollution and Bangalore is no different: an in-depth inventory of the city’s lakes found that 85% had water that could only be used for irrigation and industrial cooling. Not a single lake had suitable water for drinking or bathing." There is no joy in the way things are currently managed in Bengaluru. However, the article is wrong for Bengaluru city and thereby HSR Layout. The article is way too simplistic and does not understand how the city functions vis-à-vis water. Bengaluru may not run out of water so quickly. Here is why. Reason 1 – Solid water planning for the city: Bengaluru never has depended on its lakes and tanks formally for its water supply since the commissioning of the Hesarghatta project in 1896. It now gets its waters from one source, the Cauvery river at Torekadinahalli. 18 tmcft of water has been allocated currently to Bengaluru out of the 270 tmcft allotted to Karnataka by the Cauvery water tribunal. This is just 6.7% of Karnataka’s allocated share of the Cauvery water. Another 10 tmcft will be further used by 2023 if all things go well. That is, 28 tmcft out of 270 tmcft, about 11%. This is assured water,

even in the worst year of drought in the and BWSSB has termed it a success. Cauvery basin because drinking water has first This apart, the physical losses caused by priority over all other water uses, according to leakage of pipelines actually recharge the National Water Policy and the State water groundwater. Most of the doomsday predicpolicy. tions actually do not take into account that the All four major reservoirs on the Cauvery groundwater table is pretty high in the city stretch, with a live storage capacity of 104.55 centre. This is due to the availability of tmcft i.e. the Kabini reservoir, the K.R.S. Cauvery water and leakages getting recharged reservoir, the Hemavathi reservoir and the in the ground. This too is broadly extracted as Harangi reservoir act in tandem to provide groundwater from wells and bore-wells. water security for the city as well as the towns What does Bengaluru need to do? This of and villages dependent on the Cauvery. The course does not mean that we sit on our current live storage as on date is 30.48 tmc, at a haunches and believe things to be hunky dory. monthly demand of 1.8 tmcft good enough for People of Bengaluru need to do the following 17 months. (Source: https://www.ksndto avoid the doomsday totally even in the mc.org/Uploads/RL.pdf) remote future. Reason 2 – Rains: Bengaluru has an average * Push aggressively and quickly for the rainfall of minimum 800 mm, spread across its protection of the catchment forests in Kodagu 1250 sq.km. of metropolitan and Hassan for the tributaries area. This translates to 2740 Kabini and Hemavathi as well Copious rainfall in the million litres per day of water as the Cauvery to flow freely city is a blessing for available as rain (if the 800 mm and unpolluted. Bangalore. All that water for 60 rainy days is * Clean up our lakes and rainwater, if properly spread across 365 days). Even if bring them into play as we harvested, can make the we imagine the population of have done for Jakkur /Rachencity water-secure. Bengaluru metropolitan area to ahalli / Puttenahalli/ Kaikonbe 2.5 crores, the rainwater itself will come upto 109 litres per head per day. Of course we don’t use all that rainwater currently. Harvesting rainwater has begun slowly but surely across the city, from individual buildings to lakes and aquifers. This year, following heavy rains after a year of severe drought, even wells have filled up. Reason 3 - Waste water treatment: Waste-water treatment and recycling is picking up, thanks to sustained pressure from civil society and courts. This will ease the burden on fresh water resources. Reason 4 – Unaccounted water isn’t lost: It is a mistaken notion that the 49% non-revenue water is lost to the citizens completely. A half of it at least is financial losses, meaning the water is getting to people but is either not billed or is ‘stolen’. It is a financial loss for the Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) but not a complete loss to the citizenry at large — someone uses the water somewhere. BWSSB has been well-aware of the losses and is working to reduce the losses to under 16%, with a project that started in 2011. The UFW work, taken up with financial assistance from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has been completed in many areas of Bengaluru

drahalli. Not like Bellandur and Varthur. * Push for rainwater harvesting across all buildings, old and new, in Bengaluru. * Treat waste-water to such levels that they can be used to fill lakes and give this lake filling first charge. Surplus treated waste-water can then fill the lakes of the neighbouring dry districts, providing water to farmers for cultivation as well as enhancing bio-diversity in at least 500 lakes and surrounding areas. (This is already being done — the treated waste water goes to Kolar and Chintamani from Bengaluru.) * Understand and manage aquifers better. Recharge and use them as groundwater banks. * Push for the pro-poor policy by ensuring universal connection for water and sanitation to all households in Bengaluru. * Draw up plans to bring water from the Sharavathi reservoir as quickly as possible. A city with a 392 thousand crore economy (annual GDP) and a population of 11 million expected to go upto 20 million deserves to be water secure.

Air pollution up 42% in 1 year

Avoid walking or cycling during peak hours at busy intersections By AISHWARYA MADINENI By OUR FEATURE WRITER Bengaluru’s air quality crisis, unlike that in the cities of the north, is a silent one; most online ambient stations which provide information to the public paint a fairly clean picture of the city’s air, though most of its citizens feel otherwise, including HSR Layout. Dr Rahul Patil, Cardiologist at Jayadeva Hospital, says that there is a high incidence of heart attacks among auto and cab drivers in the city as they spend long hours in slow-moving traffic. Particulate pollution gets absorbed into the bloodstream within a few minutes and is responsible for blocking arteries. The residents should become more aware of the rising pollution crisis and not walk and cycle on or near busy roads as the benefits might not outweigh the risks”. Co Media Lab and Climate Trends carried out a seven-day air quality monitoring exercise with the help of a low-cost monitor used to measure personalised exposure levels. From February 5-15, the monitor was installed in an auto equipped with a GPS tracker to locate various junctions and sensitive areas at which pollution spikes have taken place. The seven arterial routes had a common starting point—Jayanagar/Banashankari touching Marathahalli, Silk Board, Electronic City, White Field, Uttarahalli, MG Road and Mekhri Circle. Some of the highest instant values for Particulate Matter 2.5 and 10 were noted in the following locations: ICON Central Labs, Hosur Road; Nallurhalli, Whitefield; MG Road; Near Angadi Silks, Marenahalli Road; Naidu Layout, Chikkalasandra; Arehalli Gate

Bus Stop; Jal Bhavan Bangalore; New Tharagupet; Kengeri Road, Aravalli, 3rd Main Rd; Sri Chaitanya School, Marathahalli The safety limits for particulate pollutants are available for 24 hours and list annual averages only. Which means, you cannot directly say how unsafe real time values are in comparison to the regulatory norms. However, the averages observed over the four-hour auto rides carried out in two parts have consistently generated averages above 200 micrograms per cubic meter, which indicates that very poor air quality levels prevail for several hours every day owing to traffic congestion. Annual averages published by the KSPCB are based on online and offline monitoring data and it clearly indicates that levels of Particulate Matter 2.5, the smallest and the most harmful of all, have exceeded the annual limits in the last one year by 3% to 45%. Garbage burning and vehicular pollution are the culprits, among others. © Oorvani Foundation/Open Media Initiative & citizenmatters.in RESIDENTSWATCH.IN

Good health for all

Keva Ayurveda offers that and a lot more in HSR Layout By OUR FEATURE WRITER Krishna Kumar was surrounded by Ayurveda - his mother and grandfather were established Ayurvedic practitioners. Having marvelled at the wonders of Ayurveda, he graduated from JSS AMC, Mysore, with a degree (B.A.M.S) and a diploma (PGDND) in nutrition and dietetics followed by an MBA in Healthcare from Manipal University. In 2011, Dr Kumar joined hands with an industry veteran and founded Keva Ayurveda with its first treatment centre in BTM Layout. Today, it has grown into nine treatment centres across India, including HSR Layout, with plans of expansion overseas. He has also started India’s first exclusive Ayurveda Clinic for Women and India’s first Ayurveda Online & Home Care Services. Keva’s USP is AAA - Affordability, Authenticity and Accessibility. Natural, authentic ayurvedic treatments for various medical conditions can be sought at this Panchakarma Center accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH). Treatments for weight loss, spine and joint care, skin care, infertility management, cholesterol management, stress, insomnia, hairfall and so on can be availed here. It is also home to well-equipped pharmacies and has its own range of classical formulations of Kashayams, Arishtams and Tailams, manufactured in pharmacy having GMP certificate. Keva has also teamed up with 24 Organic Mantra and Organic Mandya and sell their produce at their outlets too. In addition, the clinics also provide yoga and pranayama classes. Consultations are also done online through Keva’s website, on phone and Skype. It also has an e-store on its 34

No doubt, Keva has won several awards like the 'Best Ayurveda Hospital in Bangalore', 'Best weight loss centre in India', 'Best Ayurveda clinic in South India' and so on. In the near future, the promoters have plans of opening a wellness resort, to give the patients a complete ayurvedic experience during their stay. An Ayurveda academy that will provide training to fresh doctors, and pass on all that Keva Ayurveda has learnt, so that more and more people are benefitted, is on the cards. It is already operating a Keva Ayurveda Charitable trust, which helps the needy by conducting free health camps regularly and taking care of the treatment expenses of the patients who are in need of it. Good health for all. That's Keva's motto. Step right in.
