By Michele Leivas With work continuing for the Lasalle Street pump station, San Marco residents can anticipate the next phase of road closures to begin shortly.

Haskell has already implemented the Lasalle Street road closure off San Marco Boulevard, with northand southbound traffic continuing along the San Marco Boulevard corridor. Haskell Director of Project Development Joe Kantor said this closure facilitates the installation of the “larger gravity drainage that will come to the pump station.”

“We will soon be on bypass to move water from the east side of San Marco Boulevard to the west side, which contains the pump station,” Kantor added.

Haskell is targeting the first two weeks of May for the full road closure of San Marco Boulevard to throughtraffic, with established detours to loop traffic around the construction area.

This is anticipated to last roughly six to eight weeks.

“That would prevent throughtraffic from traveling either north- or southbound on San Marco Boulevard, and that’s when those detours would go into effect to route traffic around the intersection,” Kantor said.

Directing traffic away from the intersection, the main detour will be a two-way route from San Marco Boulevard at Riviera Street to Hendricks Avenue by way of Landon Avenue, then coming out onto Nira Street.

The local detour for businesses and residents in the immediate area surrounding the intersection will be a one-way route along Lasalle Street, Cedar Street, Larue Avenue, Riviera Street and River Road.

Duval DOGE Special Committee Identifies $17 Million in Unspent Funds The Special Committee on Duval DOGE has announced it has uncovered nearly $17 million in unspent funds, identified from completed capital projects from several city departments.

“This is a clear example of what happens when we take a closer look at how our tax dollars are being managed,” said City Council Member and Chairman, Ron Salem.

“Through smart governance and oversight, our City Council Committee has identified real dollars that can now be put to better use for the people of Jacksonville.”

Recovered from completed capital projects related to facility and recreational projects, infrastructure, and completed work, these funds will go through additional review to ensure they remain in compliance with original funding restrictions and identify appropriate options for reallocation.

City Council President Randy White established the special committee in March.

At-Large Group 2 City Councilmember Ron Salem is the committee chair, with District 5 City Councilmember Joe Carlucci as vice chair. White tasked the committee with analyzing growth in city programs and departments and evaluating services for possible savings.

Public Invited to Weigh In on IFF’s Permit Renewal Amid Ongoing Odor Concerns The Florida Department of Environmental Protection, Northeast District is inviting the community to a public meeting regarding IFF Chemical Holdings, Inc.’s Title V air operation permit renewal application regarding the International Flavors and Fragrances Jacksonville site.

The meeting will be held in the Florida State College at Jacksonville Kent Campus bookstore (3939 Roosevelt Boulevard) on Thursday, May 15, from 5 to 7 p.m.

According to the meeting notice, the permit “authorizes the permittee to operate a crude sulfate turpentine processing facility, including three steam boilers for the generation of steam, a vapor collection system for collecting the vapors from various process equipment, and the operation of three diesel fuel emergency engines.”

This revives conversations regarding the “noxious odors” detected primarily in Murray Hill, Riverside and Avondale communities and the City’s year-long Urban Odor Study conducted from April 1, 2022 to March 31, 2023. Expansions Proposed for Brooklyn’s ‘Gates of Riverside’

Renderings in the April 10 DDRB Agenda Packet depict a new two-story building for office and retail space along Riverside Avenue, replacing the existing terraced lawn.

The second add-on to the existing building at 245 Riverside Avenue would be a one-story restaurant with an activated rooftop.

By Michele Leivas The Gates of Riverside, the multi-story office building nestled between the FIS headquarters tower and the Winston Family YMCA in Brooklyn, could see a twobuilding expansion following the Downtown Development Review Board’s unanimous approval of new plans.

Presented at the April 10 DDRB meeting, the application package proposes the addition of two new structures to the office building – one fronting Riverside Avenue and the other facing the St. Johns River.

The Riverside Avenue addition would be a two-story, 24,280-square-foot mixed-use building featuring office and retail space with multiple ground-level bays that RAM Architecture CEO and Project Architect Robert Mauer said could be leased individually or combined for prospective businesses interested in a larger footprint.

According to Mauer, Akel’s Delicatessen, currently located on the riverfront side of the building, will be relocating to one of the new bays of the Riverside Avenue extension.

Facing the river, the second add-on would be a onestory 6,555-square-foot waterfront restaurant space with an activated rooftop. The existing boat slips would also

be renovated and refreshed, Mauer added, to continue to attract traffic from the river.

Mirroring the Riverside Avenue building, the designs for the restaurant feature extensive windows and glass, which Mauer said is more typical for retail space versus restaurants. The inclusion of as much glass as possible in the designs, Mauer said, was a request that property owner Hakimian Holdings, received from prospective restaurateurs interested in the space.

“He [the property owner] had a lot of requests to just make it all glass and let the restaurateur basically design the inside and the outside areas as they please,” Mauer said. “That’s kind of the program that we worked with.”

The DDRB members and staff fully supported the designs, though some provided minor critiques for the development team to address before returning for final approval, including landscaping elements and the connection between the building and the riverfront.

“This is a home run project, a great way to add some additional infill in this area,” said Board Member Fred Jones, adding that he echoed remarks regarding the addition more shade trees.

Board Member Kevin Craig said he would like to see the transition from the restaurant space to the riverfront and Riverwalk.

“I think really a key part of this and an exciting part would be to see a little more activation and segue from the restaurant to the riverfront,” Craig said. “…The more that we can really engage that handoff between the restaurant and the riverfront, there’s a really exciting opportunity there.”

Built in 2003, the 135,000-square-foot commercial building is located on a 3.4-acre parcel. It was previously known as the “St. Joe” building. The Riverside Avenue extension would replace the terraced lawn space facing the river and mask the property’s existing parking garage from the street.

This project is nearly two years in the making, following a rezoning application submitted in July 2023 to rezone the property from Planned Unit Development (PUD) to Commercial Central Business District (CCDB) to allow for these two additions. An amended rezoning application was approved by a unanimous vote by the city council, with Councilmember Rory Diamond excused.

Life Flight Expands its Fleet with New Helicopter

Environmental Grant Funds New Oyster Habitats for Trout River

A kickoff event last month celebrates the launch of this new project for Riverview Park.

Air Methods, Baptist Health and Wolfson Children’s Hospital announce the expansion of its Life Flight fleet with a state-of-the-art helicopter.

A new aircraft has been added to the Life Flight fleet, expanding area coverage for air transport services to include rural or isolated areas.

Air Methods facilitated this expansion, in collaboration with Wolfson Children’s Hospital and Baptist Health. With this new helicopter, these medical facilities will also be able to transfer critically ill or specialized care patients for swift interfacility transport for those patients in need of a higher level of care.

“This longstanding relationship continues to grow, and we are honored to support Baptist Health and Wolfson Children’s Hospital with an additional aircraft,” said Air Methods Regional Vice President Matt Turner. “Expanding Life Flight’s reach means more lives saved, faster access to care and a stronger health care network for the region.”

This new helicopter is fully equipped to ensure critical, lifesaving care in the air while its team transports both adults and children. Key features on board include oxygen and advanced airway support, blood products for transfusion, specialized cardiac support and advanced life support equipment (ventilators, defibrillators and patient monitors).

A specialized team of pilots and certified flight registered nurses and flight paramedics staff these helicopters. When they’re not on a mission, crews work to train clinicians in the field and provide hands-on instruction and real-world simulations. Additionally, these teams conduct specialized workshops and courses focused on critical care skills and emergency response capabilities.

“Helicopter transport is critical in life-threatening, time-sensitive emergencies, like stroke, heart attack or trauma, where seconds make all the difference,” said Baptist Health CEO and President Michael A. Mayo.

“At Baptist Health, we aim to meet people where and when they need us most with vital health care services.

We value our continued collaboration with Air Methods to bring this new asset to our community to help ensure people have quick access to advanced emergency care when every second counts.”

Life Flight celebrated 45 years of service. It launched in 1980 and, at the time, was Florida’s second air ambulance and only one of 40 across the country.

The Community Foundation for Northeast Florida has contributed $20,000 in a new grant from its environmental fund for new oyster beds along the Trout River’s Riverview Park.

In a partnership between the Riverview Collective Community Organization and LISC Jacksonville, 40 new oyster shell habitats will be installed near the shoreline. Comprised of 30 pounds of cement and oyster shell, these oyster shell habitats will help construct roughly 140 feet of oyster reef.

Known as “filter-feeders,” oysters help clean waterways by filtering out pollutants.

“Studies have shown that these oyster shell habitats attract larvae and grow new oysters, and they remain in place for years, despite storms and other disturbances,” said St. Johns Riverkeeper Executive Director Jimmy Orth. “They’re a simple and effective tool for growing natural oyster reefs and enhancing our waterways.”

This project will also feature an educational element through programming about water quality and oysters’ role in the ecosystem, engaging both area residents and students from IDEA Bassett, Rutledge Pearson Elementary and Highlands Elementary schools.

Established in 2022, the Northeast Florida Environmental Conservation Fund was created by the Public Trust for Conservation. This is the first grant issued from that fund and is aimed at improving and enhancing water quality in the area. Public Trust Executive Director John Henry November explained that to ensure fair and independent grantmaking, both the St. Johns Riverkeeper and the Public Trust are excluded from benefiting from these grants.

“The fund is set up to ensure that our environmental litigation is providing the greatest possible community benefit,” said November.

“We chose to entrust The Community Foundation and a panel of experts to make decisions about grants. This helps ensure these dollars are put toward the highest and best use for residents impacted by pollution.”

Aspire Church Steeple Undergoes Restoration

According to Skinner, this project served as a kickoff of sorts for a larger campaign for Aspire Church called the Bridge Initiative.

“We have an 86-year-old facility, so we’re trying to make sure that this facility is here for the decades to come,” Skinner said.

A video posted to the Aspire Church website describing the Bridge Initiative explained that the initiative is step one of a 15-year plan.

“Jacksonville is known as the River City, but long before there were any bridges over the St. Johns River, Aspire Church San Marco was already bridging the gap in our city by reaching out to people on the Southbank of the river…,” Senior Pastor Gary Lee Webber said in the video.

Aspire’s steeple is visible from five of Jacksonville’s seven bridges. The restoration project cost roughly $200,000.

Aspire Church San Marco recently completed a renovation of its steeple, refreshing one of San Marco’s tallest structures.

Aspire brought in Ohio-based CIS Steeplejack LLC – Church Steeple Repair Specialist for the project, which began in February and took a couple of weeks to complete. The restoration project was spurred by the need to ensure the steeple and roof were secured and watertight. “[The steeple] has several, what I would call tiered roofing sections that are little portions of flat deck roofing up the steeple – those were leaking pretty substantially,” said Aspire Church Facilities Director Bailey Skinner said. “…

Also the copper portion of the roof, a lot of the fasteners had either deteriorated or had been blown away over the years.”

Additionally, the steeple’s exterior had a lot of rotten wood, and repairs from

Aspire Church San Marco’s steeple undergoes a restoration addressing leaks and other issues.

By Karen Rieley With San Marco Preservation Society’s 50th anniversary approaching next year, Resident News is launching a series of vignettes featuring SMPS past presidents and celebrating the leaders who helped shape the organization responsible for preserving and protecting the historical fabric and character of the San Marco community. Look for this monthly feature in the coming months, highlighting more familiar faces behind the preservation society.

In 1988, George Foote and his wife, Michelle, moved into their 1936, two-story, red brick, Georgian Revival-style home with their two-year-old son, Joseph. They loved that San Marco was a small community in a big city.

“Churches, schools, shops, restaurants and Little League – it’s all here,” Foote said.

They liked that the neighborhood was close to downtown, eliminating long commutes to work.

“I rode my bike to work for several years,” Foote said.

“We also loved the beautiful homes. Later, we figured out that it was full of wonderful people and was a great place to raise our family.”

Foote remembers his 2009-10 term as president of San Marco Preservation Society (SMPS) as very busy.

“South Jacksonville City Hall renovation was wrapping up, San Marco By Design was getting off the ground, and a Patron’s Party was in the works,” he said. “We also had our regular slate of annual events.”

Located at 1468 Hendricks Avenue, South Jacksonville City Hall was designed by architects Mark and Sheftall. It was built in 1915. In 2008, SMPS spearheaded an extensive restoration of the building, which then became the organization’s headquarters.

“San Marco by Design: A Smart Growth Plan for North San Marco” was conceived to preserve and improve the quality of life for people living, working and playing in the neighborhood. Foote says his favorite project of his presidency was the creation and publication of past society president Robin Robinson’s book, “Southbank Sojourn: A Photographic Journey Through the Early Days of San Marco and South Jacksonville,” published in 2010.

“My role was encourager and publisher,” said Foote.

“This is a very important component to the SMPS mission and a legacy piece that can be used as a reference over time.”

Foote and his wife were junior high school sweethearts who married in 1982. They have three children – Joseph, Garrett and Regan – and a “fantastic” grandson, Cassius.

In SMPS, Foote served on the San Marco by Design Steering Committee. He is currently the chair of the San Marco Centennial Committee and, after collaborating with past organizers to bring the art festival to San Marco, Foote remains a consultant and assistant organizer for the festival three years running. He has organized Balis Park’s Christmas Tree Lighting event for more than a decade.

He has served as president and is a current member of the San Marco Merchants Association. In 2016, he rejoined forces with Robinson to co-author “San Marco Celebrates 90 Years.”

Foote remains very active in San Marco and its neighboring communities, serving as a coach, youth leader, chess teacher and political campaign worker. He worked on the political campaigns for Art Shad, Matt Carlucci, Lori Boyer and, most recently, Joe Carlucci, for whom he is currently the executive council aide.

Foote said he believes in the impact SMPS continues to have in the community.

“I’ve stayed involved in SMPS and the community as a whole because I truly believe in the power of neighborhood working together to shape a thriving, welcoming community,” Foote said. “San Marco’s charm lies in its people, its history and its spirit of collaboration. My hope is that we continue to grow thoughtfully while preserving what makes this neighborhood so special - its heart.”

St. Johns River Park Playground Adds Extra Joy to City’s Eggstravaganza

By Michele Leivas The long-awaited playground next to Friendship Fountain in St. Johns River Park is now open, and the community is already enjoying it.

The City of Jacksonville held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Jacksonville history-themed playground during its Eggstravaganza celebration on Saturday, April 19. Festivities included egg hunts, music, food and ice cream trucks, and more.

Mayor Donna Deegan joined other city officials for the ribbon cutting, including City of Jacksonville Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Services Director Daryl Joseph, District 5 City Councilmember Joe Carlucci and District 4 City Councilmember and Council Vice President Kevin Carrico.

The River City Bookmobile was also on-site for the celebrations, handing out free books for kids to take home with their egg hunt haul.

Jacksonville families didn’t waste any time enjoying this new public amenity and the beautiful weekend weather and views of the St. Johns River provided the perfect setting to spend some time on the Southbank Riverwalk.

The completion of this playground is the latest addition to St. Johns River Park, which still has more amenities in store, according to the City’s I Dig Jax webpage. Still in the works are plans for a new restaurant space to be built near Friendship Fountain. Renderings available on the website also show plans for public restrooms and a wedding plaza. Resident News recently reported on the three design concepts presented to the Downtown Investment Authority for the new restaurant building.

According to the I Dig Jax web page, the expected completion date for the St. Johns River Park is early 2026.

J. McLaughlin has officially joined the merchants of the Shoppes of Avondale, offering its brand of timeless, elegant clothing to shoppers who already enjoy frequenting the boutiques and businesses along St. Johns Avenue.

Brownlee Steps Down from Cummer Museum Leadership Role As of May 1, Dr. Andrea Barnwell Brownlee will be stepping down as the George W. and Kathleen I. Gibbs Director and CEO of the Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens.

The museum’s board of trustees accepted her retirement notice last month and Kimberly Noble, the Cummer Museum’s chief financial officer will serve as interim president and CEO until a permanent successor is named.

Dr. Andrea Barnwell Brownlee “I have been honored to lead the Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens and am proud it is increasingly regarded as a vibrant cultural hub of Jacksonville that is welcoming to all,” said Brownlee. “I am excited about devoting more time to my family and pursuing other interests. Brownlee assumed the leadership role with the museum in December 2020. During her tenure, the museum has achieved several milestones, including establishing a comprehensive five-year strategic plan and earning its reaccreditation from the American Alliance of Museums – a distinction held by only 1,102 museums in the United States. It has also received several awards and accolades, including a $1 million capacity grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

The museum will conduct a national search for Brownlee’s successor.

Region’s First Four-Year Medical School Coming to Jacksonville

Officials from the City of Jacksonville joined Jacksonville University and Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) representatives at a momentous groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday, March 26 kicking off construction for the region’s first four-year medical school.

“With the groundbreaking of LECOM at Jacksonville University, we are creating a premier educational environment that will nurture the next generation of healthcare professionals,” said LECOM Provost Silvia M. Ferretti. “This facility will provide our students with cutting-edge resources and hands-on learning opportunities, preparing them to excel in their medical careers and contribute to the advancement of healthcare in the region.”

JU President Tim Cost said the addition of LECOM to the university’s evolving Medical Mall will further enhance the north end of the JU campus.

“The Medical Mall will complement our existing Health Sciences Complex and Dolphin Pointe Health Care, creating a dynamic ecosystem of education, clinical training and patient care. We are proud to play a pivotal role in bringing a four-year medical school to Jacksonville and positioning our community at the forefront of healthcare innovation and education.”

The Medical Mall is home to JU’s 104,000-square-foot health sciences complex, occupational therapy teaching facility, school of orthodontics and Dolphin Pointe Health Care – a 146-bed rehabilitation and skilled nursing facility.

LECOM anticipates its inaugural class of roughly 75 medical students in 2026 for its Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine program. Within five years, enrollment is expected to increase to nearly 150 students annually. The largest medical college and osteopathic academic health system in the country, LECOM at Jacksonville University will be the fifth LECOM location nationwide, with campuses in Bradenton, Florida, New York and Pennsylvania. Its flagship campus is in Erie, Pennsylvania.

Her marketing career began in 1991 at WJCT Channel 7/Stereo 90 before moving to commercial television in 1995 with Clear Channel Television, serving as account manager and local and national sales manager. Rachael Sellers (regular voting member) is the senior vice president of finance for Amports, Inc. and a CPA whose resume includes a decade-long tenture at PwC, where she began as an assurance associate before rising to director. In his 30 years’ experience, Paul Sarto (ex officio voting member) has appraised more than 9,000 properties and conducted forensic review appraisals for Fannie Mae. Nestled in the heart of Downtown Jacksonville’s Cathedral District, St. John’s Cathedral has long been caring for its congregation’s spiritual well-being.

With the launch of its new Center for Wellbeing, it is now offering free resources for the community at-large that focus on wellbeing for mind, body and spirit.

“We are a radically inclusive space and we’re going to meet you where you are,” said Center for Wellbeing Task Force Member Dr. Paige Hakimian.

The Center for Wellbeing opened on March 16. It is a renovated space on the third floor of St. John’s Cathedral House that offers an array of services completely free of charge for the Jacksonville community.

“The space is just beautiful,” said St. John’s Cathedral Dean Kate Moorehead Carroll. “…It’s got this quietness to it – it’s been renovated and Paige helped us with that.

It’s just absolutely beautiful – very light, very light.”

Carroll said this kind of free resource is critically needed, particularly with so many lacking access to health insurance and benefits.

“It really began with me praying and realizing the world is hurting and also with insurance changing and many people don’t have benefits, that it might be a good idea for a church to begin to offer a place where people could seek wellness and be nurtured regardless of their religious background,” Carroll said.

Enter Hakimian, whom Carroll met by chance at a yoga studio several years ago. Together, the two began envisioning what that could look like for St. John’s Cathedral.

The Center for Wellbeing is located on the third floor St. John’s Cathedral House.

Today, the center offers a full roster of programs, including one-on-one counseling, spiritual direction, contemplative yoga, “Age-ing to Sage-ing,” meditation,

Hakimian added.

In one-on-one sessions, Hakimian said she helps identify a person’s goals, strengths and “the values around their why.”

“Sometimes we get real wrapped up in the ‘how to do something,’ but we don’t take the time to really build that foundation,” she said.

Once those factors are identified, Hakimian crafts a personalized program, typically six to eight weeks long, for clients coming in for those one-on-one sessions. “[The center is] this opportunity to build connection at a time when so many people feel disconnected and isolated and really lonely,” Hakimian. “So it’s just become this very synergetic space.”

Alongside Hakimian, the Center for Wellbeing Task Force is comprised of University of Florida Emeritus Professor of Neurology Dr. Louis Russo, PhD Resident Kell Owen, Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner Jacqueline Stoll and Retired Licensed Clinical Social Worker Patrick Kimball.

Carroll said she hopes the center will fill a hole in services for that part of Jacksonville and people are already taking advantage of the services and programming it offers.

“We are an area where there aren’t a lot of counseling services, in particular, around us, so we hope that this will really provide a need for the community, and right in the immediate vicinity,” Carroll said.

According to the center’s web page, there are still more programs in development, including stress management, nutrition/healthy diets and financial wellbeing.

“Primarily, the clients that we see are those that are motivated for sustained, positive behavior change,”

Caring for the Caregivers ElderSource, the Area Agency on Aging and the Aging and Disability Resource Center for Northeast Florida, has 90 spots available in its free program for local caregivers.

The Tailored Caregiver Assessment and Referral Program (TCARE) pairs participants with specialists who

equip them with tools and strategies to prevent burnout and ease the stresses of being a caregiver for a loved one.

According to the AARP, 2.7 million adults take on the tasks and duties of an unpaid family caregiver in addition to their existing responsibilities.

Downtown Ecumenical Services Council held a wall-breaking at its new facility on Liberty Street that will allow the nonprofit to expand its impact while continuing to serve those in crisis.

DESC leadership, board members, volunteers and supporters gathered at 956 North Liberty Street on Friday, April 4, to celebrate this milestone. Following comments by DESC Executive Director David Clark, Board Chair Claude Moulton and longtime supporters Vince and Linda Ferrigno, participants donned hard hats and protective eyewear, grabbed a sledgehammer, and ceremoniously broke an interior wall to commemorate the start of the transformation of this new center.

The building purchase was made possible by a $1 million lead gift from the Ferrignos as part of DESC’s capital campaign, which has raised more than $2 million of its $2.9 million goal.

Though still moving through the permitting process, DESC anticipates moving into its new home by the end of the year. Currently, the organization operates out of the basement of Downtown’s First Presbyterian Church, where it has resided for more than 40 years. This new facility will provide more space and easier access for the clients seeking DESC’s aid and services. The completed space will feature “expanded space for groceries, clothing, case management and a welcoming lobby with private meeting rooms.”

Following the ceremony, Clark said this new facility is the culmination of DESC’s passion and dedication to the community.

“The result of a new facility means that we can help people more completely,” Clark added. “We’re rather limited in our interactions today and so by expanding, creating opportunities to bring other resources to people who are struggling with meeting their needs day-to-day, we can make a difference in their lives.”

The Emmanuel Project of Northeast Florida is the recipient of a $3,000 donation from the Northeast Florida Chapter of the Florida RV Trade Association “Our members feel strongly about giving back to nonprofit agencies in northeast Florida, especially a nonprofit like Emmanuel Project that shows The Emmanuel Project of Northeast Florida brings how recreational vehicles can medicine to its patients with a mobile medical clinic. be used to provide medical services directly in the communities that need them,” said Northeast Florida FRVTA Board Member Michele Berg.

The Emmanuel Project is a nonprofit mobile medical clinic based in Ponte Vedra that delivers essential care to people and underserved areas. Executive Director Raley Moore said the association’s contribution helped to cover essential repairs.

“Through the kindness of organizations like the FRVTA Northeast Florida Chapter, we can carry out our mission of providing free, quality medical care to those who need it most,” Moore added.

In the three years since Thomas Tran assumed management of River Nails Spa on University Boulevard, the thing he says he is proudest of is the customers.

“It’s the customers, darling,” he said.

Tran celebrated his third anniversary at River Nails Spa in April.

“It’s not blowing up big yet, but everybody’s happy,” Tran said.

Pulling for Veterans Friends and supporters of Operation New Uniform came out to Jacksonville Clay Target Sports for the ONU 9th annual Veterans’ Cup Clay Shoot Fundraiser on Friday, April 11.

This is one of two signature fundraising events held each year to raise funds for the Jacksonville-based nonprofit, which works with military veterans and their families as they transition out of the military world and into the civilian one.

ONU Board Member Blace Albert said the event turnout was incredible.

“It’s phenomenal but this represents Jacksonville, to be honest,” Albert said. “It’s a great town that supports our veterans in a lot of different ways and ONU is very unique in how they do that, so we are just extremely happy to have this tremendous support.”

Golf, Giving and Gratitude at Timuquana Daniel celebrates 24 years of impact

Daniel hosted its 24th annual Hank Haynes Golf Classic at the Timuquana Country Club on Monday, April 14.

The golf classic serves not only as a fundraiser for Daniel, the “oldest childserving agency” in the state, but also a tribute to its namesake, Caldwell “Hank” Haynes, longtime friend and trustee to Daniel for nearly 40 years.

The day-long tournament included oncourse fun like Hole-in-One for a Car, Chip for a Grill, Longest Drive, Putt for a Bottle and Closest to the Pin. An online charity auction opened a week before the tournament, allowing further opportunities for the community to support a worthy cause.

The golf classic ended with a reception, live auction and awards ceremony to celebrate the day’s winner.

Granada mom Michelle Barnett always dreamed of owning her own law firm.

How that law firm turned out was much different than how she’d first envisioned it, though.

“It didn’t turn out to be in the little Victorian house on Main Street in my hometown,” she laughed. “It turned out much different and better in many ways!”

Following the economic downturn in 2007, different areas of the law were struggling. In 2009, Barnett and her partners decided to venture out on their own.

“It started off as an idea, we planned for it, we did it, and it worked!” she said.

While it was a challenging time – Barnett had a newborn at home and was learning how to be a mom - she realizes looking back, there never would have been an easy time to start a business.

“I wish I would have had the confidence then that I have now but you only gain that confidence from experience,” she said.

One of her biggest rewards is being an example for her children.

“I didn’t realize how much joy I would get in hearing my kids say how proud they are of me and my business,” she said.

“They are learning invaluable lessons on being organized, watching me juggle a career and a business, and seeing that success comes from hard work.”

After her twins were born, Heather Buckman got her real estate license and started working at Berkshire Hathaway.

After a few years in the industry, she obtained her broker’s license, had another set of twins and took over as owner of Cowford Realty & Design.

“From a small house in Riverside with four agents, we have grown to over 35 agents today, selling almost $100 million/ year annually,” she said. “It has been a dream come true.”

In addition to her nine- and 12-year-old twins, Heather also has two grown children.

“The balancing act of juggling multiple demands is something that comes naturally to me,” she laughed. “However, different seasons of life require you to be more present in one capacity or another.

Sometimes I have to be ‘all in’ at work, and that means I’m not as present at home. But other times of the year, I’m all in at home and we are out in our camper across the country having amazing adventures.”

Under Heather’s servant leadership style, the dedicated team at Cowford, headquartered at 3651 Park Street, is doing good work in the community.

“Success doesn’t happen by accident, or because you’re a good person and deserve it,” she said. “You have to go out, work twice as hard and twice as long as you thought it would be, and always come from a place of service.”

“Becoming a dentist was a dream of mine from a young age,” shared Dr. Bethany Burton, who owns and operates Southern Smiles at 2522 Oak Street. “I always enjoyed going myself and, as I got older, I realized it was a great way to help others, work with my hands and have a flexible schedule for family life.”

Her practice offers dental services, dental implants, cosmetic dentistry and emergency care. Raising her baby boy, Beth works to balance both work and home.

“It’s important to me to be a present mother, but it is also important to me to be a good leader to my team, my community, and patients,” she said. “All of life is a great balancing act.”

Burton is proud of the example she and her husband are setting for their son.

“It doesn’t have to be family or career, mom or dad chasing their dreams, there is a reality where all can exist,” she said.

“It just requires a lot of support and planning.”

Burton is encouraging of other mompreneurs.

“You can do it, don’t worry about those who say you can’t, or you can’t do both well. Few things, if any, can’t be accomplished with hard work and persistence,” she said. “Moms can do anything, and usually one-handed.”

Melanie Dobbins had her own career and was taking care of her first son when her husband’s company was sold. Unsatisfied with the new ownership, he thought about starting his own business.

“We considered other areas in his trade but kept coming back to the same option,” she said. “With the support of our family, we made the leap and opened our own company.”

At first, Dobbins kept the books in the evening while she continued working her day job.

“Once the workload became too much for my nights, we made the decision for me to leave my career and began dedicating full-time for our company,” she said. “All while having our second son and the other beginning school.”

Located on the Westside, Emergency Heating and Air is a professional HVAC installation, service and repair business for residential and light commercial customers.

The business has been embraced by the whole family.

“When the boys were younger, we would give them company shirts in their size,” she said. “They loved wearing them and were so proud to tell people their parents owned the company.”

Now that her children are nearing their teens, they may not always be as thrilled.

“As the company and our kids grew, talking work with my business partner husband while cooking and over the dinner table became the norm,” she laughed. “This often makes things hectic and boring for the kids… which it should not.”

With a longtime love of shopping and fashion, Renee Fields’ business began with monogramming outfits for her newborn daughter, Kennedi. When friends asked her to make clothing for their children as well, Fields had the idea to start an online store through Etsy.

“I was a teacher with Duval County Schools during the day while making and selling items online in the evening and weekends,” she said.

In just one year, her earnings from her Etsy shop had surpassed her teacher’s salary and she and her husband decided it was time to open a brick-and-mortar storefront.

“I could pinch myself…but here we are, 15 years later,” Fields said.

Located at 4212 Beverly Avenue, Kennedi’s Closet, a children’s boutique, specializes in smocked and monogrammed clothing and accessories.

“I love seeing customers happy,” she said. “We work together to create this unique personalized item, picking out colors and fonts. Seeing them happy with the final product is always rewarding. I’m also thankful that so many of my customers have turned into lifelong friends.”

Although the store stays busy, Fields makes time to go on field trips and be present for her kids.

“They’re only little once and I don’t want to miss anything,” she said.

When experienced jeweler Sarah Flores learned Frazier Jewelers was closing, she realized it was the opportune time to start her business – one she would name for her father.

“I looked at it as a long-term investment while still being able to serve the Ortega community and its surroundings with a service they had come to expect,” she said.

St. John’s Jewelry, located at 2925 Corinthian Avenue, features fine and custom jewelry, watches and repair and engraving services.

As a new mom, Flores notes that owning a business is like having another child.

“It takes a lot of your energy to get it running the way you want it to and you have to tend to it whenever something is not going well, just like a child,” she said.

When it gets stressful and challenging to manage her time, Flores remembers a saying: “Guilty moms make confused children.”

It has changed her mindset.

“If you’re going to go to work, then go to work confidently,” she said. “Let your kids see your confidence in your decisions and be a part of hearing about what exciting things you did that day.”

Having a supportive partner and being comfortable making decisions no matter what the outcome has been key to Flores’ success.

“I’ve made plenty of mistakes that I wish I could take back,” she said. “But really, they’ve helped me grow and better understand my business.”

Stacey Flores found her passion in a shared interest with her husband, who was a chemistry major and avid craft beer home brewer and connoisseur.

“I realized that I could run a craft brewery that embraced a strong sense of community and could be a gathering space for a wide array of patrons,” she said.

Fishweir Brewing Company, located at 1183 Edgewood Avenue South, opened in 2018, when her oldest daughter was only 6 months old. Now with two girls at home, Stacey says she’s learned how to be adaptable and flexible, because plans will always change.

“Initially, I had the thought that everything needs to be done to completion before moving on to another project or business venture, but being a mom and a business owner truly changed that way of thinking,” Flores said.

Fishweir features custom brewed beers and seltzers served in the taproom and Backyard Garden. It also offers wine and nonalcoholic options. Balancing work and home, Flores also takes time for herself “to fill up my own cup.” Her greatest joy is combining her two worlds and “knowing that my girls are growing up watching me run our business as a leader and showing them the confidence to dream big and not letting anything stand in their way of success.”

Growing up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Cheryl Fluhr enjoyed visiting museums, and particularly enjoed 20th century art.

“As much as I was fascinated by the artistic process, I also loved to fantasize about what those big colorful pieces would look like in my home,” she said. “I think that was the foundation of my attraction to bold color and iconic design.”

Fluhr travels frequently and savors discovering treasures along the way.

Opening the Syrene boutique, located at 2016 Hendricks Avenue in San Marco, allows her to combine all her passions. “I am truly happy and grateful that I was able to open my business while my daughter, Parker, was still under my roof so that she could see the hard work and commitment firsthand,” she said. “She is a senior this year and headed off to university this fall.”

Fluhr said her favorite part of the business – her sourcing trips to Italy and France – are made even better when her daughter accompanies her.

“I love seeing what kind of products she is attracted to and hearing her perspective,” she said.

As a single parent, Fluhr also works full time as a financial director. “As I get more experienced in my business, I look for every way to work smarter and more efficiently so that I can reserve more space for family time,” she said.

San Marco mom Wendy Gillis realized her dream during the pandemic.

“It gave me a chance to take a break from the day-to-day of being a college professor and really think about what I would like to do if I could do anything – and that became stand-up comedy.”

After watching countless Netflix standup specials, taking online courses and reading comedy books, Gillis hit the open mics and began performing in a few local showcases.

“I am a 50-plus-year-old mom of two teenagers, and I find that a lot of my comedy comes from my day-to-day of raising them,” she said. “Several times, moms come up to me after the show and tell me about their current struggles of raising teenagers, and they thank me for telling my story in such an entertaining way.”

Gillis is joining comedic forces with other moms for a “Mom Com,” benefiting the Betty Griffin Center on May 8.

“Comedy has taught me so much about humility,” she said. “It’s taught me that not every show, not every joke, is going to be a winner and that’s okay. I have also been trying to translate this lesson to the rest of my life as well. We will always have joy and challenges coming our way, and comedy has been a way for me to process both.”

Granada’s Jen Harbin said Grit Camp was born from the desire to pass on “universal, timeless and true success principles that had helped us to the next generation of young people.”

“My husband, Brian, and I wanted to provide a mechanism for motivated young adults to gain experience running a business and building more healthy habits, while having a positive impact on their community,” she added.

In 2020, when Colby Harris and Dylan Tedder joined their team as interns, Harbin said they knew they’d found the perfect fit with such a committed pair of new team members.

“They led their fellow camp counselors in leading the campers to have a blast each day while developing more grit; it has been a spectacular adventure ever since,” Harbin said.

Harbin said witnessing the camp experiences is inspiring.

“There is nothing better than observing the mental, physical, and emotional development of the young people who participate in Grit Camp,” Harbin said.

“It is such a gift to watch individuals gain confidence because they challenged themselves out of to their comfort zone.”

Harbin’s advice to business owners is to be selective in who you recruit and hire.

“Work with people who have positive attitudes, integrity, and a strong work ethic,” she said. “Skills can be learned by anyone who is willing to put in the work, so choose people who are accountable.”

Ice cream has always been a family destination for Kristy Iuliano.

“We went out of our way as a family to find as many ice cream shops as possible, some unique, some franchised, and others family-owned and operated,” Iuliano said.

So, when Iuliano started looking into business opportunities as her daughters were preparing for college, she kept coming back to ice cream.

“The family activity of visiting ice cream shops turned into a journey to start my own ice cream business,” she said.

Mixter is located at 3853 Hendricks Avenue in Miramar. It uses liquid nitrogen at -320 degrees to instantly freeze your creamy creation, with mix-ins and toppings of your choosing. Iuliano’s daughters also work in the shop alongside her, where, she said, they gain valuable insight and experience.

“They see me problem-solving, creating, and persevering, which teaches them resilience and creativity, just as they teach me when they offer support and help,” she said.

Iuliano has learned to “embrace the chaos and adapt quickly,” as both business and motherhood can be unpredictable.

Perfectly balancing work and family isn’t possible, but that’s okay. Kristy advises, “Embrace flexibility and let go of guilt.

Trust that you’re doing your best, and focus on progress, not perfection. Also, prioritize self-care—it’s not selfish; it’s essential for sustaining both your business and your family.”

“I don’t remember having birthday parties as a child, only maybe cake and cupcakes at school, which I am still very grateful for, but growing up, that really stuck with me,” she said. “So, as an adult, I’m the one who brings the party to the party.”

MamaSita’s Decor specializes in balloon arches and garlands for any budget. James also owns Six in The City vintage clothing and accessories shop at 1110 Edgewood Avenue South in Murray Hill.

“Both of my businesses are very flexible,” she said. “My greatest joy is being able to take my kids with me to work and them seeing what Mommy can do. I hope to inspire them to be creative and bring joy to others as I have.”

While James had the innate creativity for her businesses, she is a self-taught entrepreneur.

“In the beginning, I was really winging it. I only knew what I learned from social media and YouTube,” she said. “I knew how to create for my business, but I didn’t know how to run a business.”

After sticking with it and not giving up, no matter what challenges she faced, one valuable lesson learned, that James can now share with confidence, is: “Never forget your worth as a business owner.”

San Jose stay-at-home mom Skye Johnson discovered and joined a fitness group called Stroller Strength. Exercise was a way for her to give back to herself and she said she fell in love with fitness and goal setting.

“Because of the goal setting and achievements inspired by that group, I signed up and completed an Ironman triathlon,” Johnson said. “I knew that if I could do it, anyone could, and Tri with Skye was born.”

Johnson has been coaching women through their first triathlons since 2011. Her program is eight weeks of group swim, bike and run sessions, plus weekly Zoom calls and group training plan emails. She works early hours to be available to her kids when they are out of school.

“I set boundaries on when I work and when I don’t because work has a tricky way of seeping into spare and precious family time if you let it,” she said. Johnson is so passionate about her job, it often doesn’t feel like work. She realizes now that that passion initially caused her to undercharge for her services.

“If you don’t charge your worth, you will end up burnt out and resentful of your work,” she advised.

Dawn Ritter Makes Perfect Scents

Like so many others, Dawn Ritter was looking for ways to stay busy during the pandemic. That search led to a purchase of mason jars to attempt making jam or canning vegetables. The idea struck to make candles instead.

“I’ve always loved scents—especially since my other job at the time was scentrelated—so I ordered some cotton wicks and began experimenting,” Ritter said.

Ritter began giving her candles to her friends and she said their positive feedback and support inspired her to transform her pandemic hobby into a business. Though Ritter began with candles, she also makes fragrances for the home and the body.

Her ingredients are high quality and responsibly sourced to be safe for you and the environment.

“Once I learned about the toxic chemicals often found in store-bought candles, I dove into research and became passionate about creating cleaner-burning, healthier alternatives,” Ritter said.

Ritter launched her company after about nine months of testing and refining.

Today, she sells at local markets in area neighborhoods and online. Her greatest joy comes from seeing how her products positively impact others.

“There’s no better feeling than hearing a customer say that a candle I created helped them relax or brought them comfort,” she said. “Knowing that something I made with my own hands can bring someone joy fills me with pride and purpose.”

Kristin Solomon didn’t expect to stay long-term when she first joined her father at Solomon Ventures. Formerly the owner of The Maternity Shoppe of San Marco, Solomon joined her dad in 2012. “…We work so well together [and] it’s been rewarding to work alongside him,” Solomon said.

Through their freight salvage business, the father-daughter duo operate a retail store at 1650 Art Museum Drive that sells groceries, clothing, home goods, appliances and more at wholesale prices.

“Working in a family business has allowed me to have the necessary flexibility to be there for my kids,” she said “I was able to attend their school events and sports activities, or stay home with them when they were sick.”

Solomon also recognizes that her children have grown up with a sense of community from being around the business.

“Our customers and employees have a lot to do with that,” she said. “There’s a lot of love there that makes the challenges worthwhile.”

To other moms, Solomon advises to only take on what you want.

“Don’t be afraid to say ‘no’ or ‘not now.’ Don’t compare yourself with others,” she said. “Do what’s best for you and your kids and go for it!”

“I had a toddler and was working an obscene number of hours,” she said. “I realized I was sacrificing too much of my family life building someone else’s dream.”

Seven years later, this Ortega mom of two is an independent and licensed insurance agent and owner of Mere, which assists individuals and employers with health coverage, life insurance and supplemental products.

“My kids are involved in so many fun ways—whether it’s modeling for our materials, attending events, or just showing up in client conversations,” she said. “It’s fulfilling to be an example to them that women can chase their dreams and work hard for what matters.”

Spilsbury advises aspiring mompreneurs to join the local Chamber and the Jacksonville Women’s Business Center.

“I wish I had found a mentor early on – I had to figure everything out on my own, and it was incredibly lonely those first few years without a support network,” she said. “Now I know there are so many groups and resources available, many of them free, to help business owners connect and grow. That’s part of why I’m writing a book: to guide other moms through what I wish someone had shared with me.”

Juggling all the demands of running her own business while being a mom to three boys can be tough. Stoner said it’s an unending balancing act, but one filled with purpose and love.

Two secrets to her success are waking up early and having a supportive system of family and friends.

“I wake up 30 to 45 minutes before my kids,” Stoner said.

Those quiet moments in the early morning give her the chance to get grounded, get organized and be present once her boys wake up.

“It sets the tone for a calmer, more intentional day,” she added.

Stoner also advised to “choose your village wisely.”

“It truly takes a village and having a circle that you can lean on—and that can lean on you—makes all the difference,” she added.

While it can be challenging to manage her time to balance her family and her business, Thompson advises other moms who want to start a business to just go for it.

“If there is something that you enjoy doing and are good at, make the leap and see where it takes you,” she said.

For Avondale mom Heather Tritt, starting a business was deeply personal and full of purpose.

“As a mom, I’ve always had that natural instinct to care, to advocate, to protect,” she said. “When I entered the world of guardianship and social work, I realized how many vulnerable individuals didn’t have that kind of voice or support.”

That realization pushed Tritt to launch her own business rooted in compassion and integrity – two characteristics that reflect the care she’d want for her own family. Being a mompreneur provides Tritt flexibility and the ability to build something her children could appreciate.

“When I tell them about my work—how I help protect someone’s rights, ensure they’re cared for, or advocate for their dignity—I take pride in that,” she said. “They can see it’s truly making a difference.”

“Guardianship and social work can be heavy, and balancing that with motherhood isn’t always easy,” she said. “Some days I’m emotionally drained, but I still have to show up fully at home. But even in those moments, I remember why I do this—and that fuels me forward.”

Her support system is also vital. “This work takes heart, and sometimes that heart gets tired,” she said. “Having a support system—whether it’s a mentor, a team, or just a friend who checks in—makes all the difference.”

After attending art school in South Florida, Ashley Summers Worsham got involved in the film and advertising industries.

“My work with entertainment publications gave me invaluable experience and connections, which I later used to start a business partnership focused on developing books and television shows,” she said.

After a few years, when she discovered she was expecting twins, Worsham decided to take a break from these projects, which she said was a blessing in disguise because it allowed her the opportunity to revisit her true passion: painting.

“Since then, I’ve been exploring new avenues in fine art and am now preparing to re-enter the art world as a fine artist,” Worsham said.

Each piece of art Worsham creates holds a special connection for her and fulfills her passion for creativity. Today, Worsham lives in Granada. The biggest challenge for her is finding the time and space for her art while caring for her four children.

“Despite this, I make it a priority to carve out time each day to dedicate to my craft and achieve my artistic goals,” Worsham said. “Life can be even more fulfilling when you nurture both your family and your passion at the same time.”

Record-Breaking Attendance for NFLT Annual Meeting

More than 70 guests attended the evening and enjoyed a wagon tour of the 1,000-plus-acre property, which included a peek at model cabins, a viewing of the animal paddocks and exploring the gardens and orchards.

An oyster roast and live music kicked off the evening’s meal. The Farm’s culinary partner, Congaree and Penn presented a three-course meal, paired with wine, which included mustard greens, roasted pork belly, heritage turkey, fingerling potatoes and apple tatin with honey caramel and ice cream. All ingredients were grown or raised on the property.

The second evening of this spring series took place on April 26. Its final installation will be held on May 17.

North Florida Land Trust’s 2025 Annual Meeting and Celebration had record-breaking attendance, raising nearly $130,000 to continue its mission.

The sold-out event was held at The Yards in Ponte Vedra on Sunday, March 30. Dr. Johnetta Cole delivered the keynote speech and Board Chair Lisa Barton shared a review of NFLT’s accomplishments from the previous year at the meeting and several honorees were recognized during the meeting as well.

Moveable Feast for the Soul Perry and Cyndy Reynolds at the RAP Home Tour

By Peggy Harrell Jennings Art enthusiasts were hopping and bopping to the Artbeat rock at the full roster of exciting events of the past few weeks.

The sixth annual “Vision for Art” exhibit, held at the Episcopal School of Jacksonville St. Mark’s campus, was beautifully organized, and attendees had an exciting time viewing the works of many local artists. Featured artist Mark Carson English was on site to demonstrate his vibrant painting techniques.

Folks visited 12 galleries all over Jacksonville on the second annual Art Gallery Brunch Hop, where visitors were treated to libations, snacks, and a variety of styles and techniques from local

“Heavyweight,” an invitational exhibit hosted by Steve Williams’ Florida Mining Gallery and curated by Jason Johns, featured work by 30 artists that examined and explored the human figure.

Lana Shuttleworth gave an artist talk at Touché Gallery, and there was oh so much more to see for those hopping around to all 12 galleries. Award-winning fine art photographer Mary Atwood’s exhibit ‘Triple Play” is up at Happy Medium Books Café through June 9 and Peggy Harrell Jennings’ exhibit “Birds and Blooms” is on display at the Downtown Library Gallery, located on the second and third floors, util May 5. The good times rolled during the 51st Home Tour, hosted by Riverside Avondale Preservation. People went “Tuk’n’, biked, drove, or walked to visit the homes on the tour and more than 1,000 people visited the RAP Art House on two breezy, sunfilled days where 42 artists displayed more than 100 works of art from paintings and sculptures to glass works and collages; every imaginable genre was represented.

Artist Mark Carson English at Vision for Art another degree of inspiration. It was a festive time for artists and attendees. As Elton John sang, “I never knew a better time, and I guess I never will” – at least not until next year’s tour!

John Bunker’s exhibit, “Art and Spirituality” at The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd was well attended as old friends and new celebrated his joyful paintings and enjoyed visiting with Bunker, his wife, Diane and Bruce Dempsey, former Director of the Jacksonville Art Museum (now MOCA).

Visitors previewed the stunning and thought-provoking exhibit “Knowing the West” at the Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens and were treated to a guided tour by co-curator Dr. Mindy N. Beshaw.

There are stunning works by Native Americans and the exhibit is one of the

largest collections of authentic works ever showcased together. It is not just about visual art, but a testimony to the transference of cultures from east to west and west to east, including fascinating work created by those imprisoned in the Castillo de San Marcos. Be sure to check out the many workshops and presentations at the museum while this exhibit is in-house.

As if this wasn’t enough to keep a body hopping and bopping, scads of folks beat it downtown to James Weldon Johnson Park for the sidewalk chalk drawing contest and to Art in the Park activities led by Cookie Davis and Ted Head.

As Hemingway stated: “Art feeds the artist, and art feeds life. It is a feast for the soul.” It may not be Paris, but Jacksonville has a veritable Moveable Feast.

47 of the 64 artists selected for Jax Contemporary: MOCA Jacksonville Arts Triennial who were at the opening to meet museum patrons.

MOCA Jacksonville welcomed a record-setting 750-plus guests to its Spring Exhibitions Opening Celebration on Thursday, April 10.

The evening celebrated two new exhibitions: “The Armory South: The 1924 Jacksonville Woman’s Club Exhibition Rediscovered” and “Jax Contemporary: MOCA Jacksonville Arts Triennial.”

“The Armory South” showcases core pieces from MOCA’s very first exhibition from 1924, which has very nearly been forgotten to history.

It is a seminal Modernist exhibition created by the Woman’s Club of Jacksonville and the Jacksonville Fine Arts Society, precursor to what is now MOCA Jacksonville.

The evening included presentations by Moca Board Co-Chair Dr. P. Scott Brown.

Scott is a guest curator, art historian and interim Local artists Lenny Foster, Dustin Harewood, and Princess Simpson Rashid at the opening dean of University of North Florida’s Hicks of Jax Contemporary Honors College. A UNF jazz duo and Douglas Anderson School of the Arts students provided live music for the evening.

Most of the 64 artists featured in the “Jax Contemporary” exhibition attended the evening as well, providing a unique opportunity for guests to mix and mingle with them while viewing their works of art.

‘Preserving What Matters’ Greenscape of Jacksonville celebrated its 50th anniversary in master style at the 2025 Root Ball, held at The River Club on Saturday, April 12.

The Master’s Tournament-themed evening included a five-hole mini golf tournament and a live and silent auction before guests moved on to enjoy dinner and the rest of the evening.

District 5 City Councilmember Joe Carlucci was among the many notable Jacksonville faces who attended the evening, including former Jacksonville Mayor John Peyton and City of Jacksonville Chief Sustainability Officer Ashantae Green.

In a brief address, Carlucci congratulated Greenscape of Jacksonville on this momentous anniversary.

“That’s an amazing legacy and hopefully just the beginning of your commitment to Jacksonville’s tree canopy,” Carlucci said. “…Here’s to the next 50 years, preserving what matters, making a lasting impact for generations to come.”

By Peggy Harrell Jennings Exciting times are ahead for the Museum of Science and History, Jacksonville’s beloved MOSH. Guests wined and dined at the beautiful riverfront home of Ric Goodman and John Hurtubise on Thursday, April 17, and enjoyed meeting the new CEO, Dr. Alistair Dove, who spoke to the enthusiastic group about changes ahead for the award-winning museum.

The MOSH Genesis Capital Campaign project has raised millions of dollars for the construction of the new facility at the Jacksonville shipyards through significant business, personal, and foundation contributions. The opening is planned for 2028.

Since 1941, the Jacksonville Children’s Museum, then on Riverside Avenue, has provided the community with interesting opportunities to explore historically significant displays, take art and science classes and have hands on experiences with animals and the natural world. The museum has been onsite at the Southbank since 1969 and has added the arts, the Alexander Brest Planetarium – now the Bryan-Gooding Planetarium in the Alexander Brest Science Theater – and much more, but has now outgrown its limited and outdated exhibition space.

The new facility will have 130,000 feet across three floors for innovative designs,

updated facilities and exciting exhibits and interactivity. Dove’s enthusiasm and expertise promises an exciting, but challenging, transition as the museum builds and reshapes itself to meet the needs of the future and provides an outstanding and significant educational attraction for all ages.

Originally from Australia, Dove was selected from more than 50 highly qualified applicants from around the world. This forward-thinking, congenial scientist has a proven record for leadership. Among other endeavors he has 17 years’ experience as director of science and education at the Atlanta Aquarium. As MOSH Board Chair William Magevney remarked, “He is the right fit for the right time.”

Guests enjoyed socializing and listening to Dove’s engaging presentation about the dynamic future of Jacksonville’s landmark museum.

As Hurtubise said, “We are excited about being involved with MOSH. A quality museum is important for our city to thrive and be recognized as a great place to live. After meeting Alistair, we wanted to be part of this project. His personality draws you in and we want to help with the success of this endeavor.”

By Lauren Weedon Hopkins Since January, many presidential executive orders have impacted the nonprofit sector, from programming to funding to staffing, leading many local agencies to shift their operations drastically. Some organizations have been forced to lay off staff, while others have reduced their services available to the community. Some nonprofits are discussing mergers while others are contemplating closures. Overall, a general feeling of unease and ambiguity plagues the nonprofit sector this year.

This is the time for board members, donors, volunteers and business leaders to rally behind our nonprofit organizations and support them in the best way possible.

A vibrant and thriving nonprofit sector is vital to the lifeblood of our city. At Resident News, we see every day the power of our community to band together and help one another.

Nonprofit organizations have always been nimble, able to accomplish meaningful outcomes with limited resources.

This resilient spirit is more important than ever in our current environment of federal funding cuts and uncertain futures.

Here are some ways nonprofits are innovating to save resources.

Fiscal Sponsorship The Nonprofit Center of Northeast Florida recently held an open session for its members to introduce the concept of fiscal sponsorship. In this model, the nonprofit can focus on its mission’s programmatic work as the “project” and leave the back office, administrative operations such as human resources, insurance and financial management to the fiscal “sponsor.”

With a grant from JPMorgan Chase and Co., the Nonprofit Center began its shared services and fiscal sponsorship research early last year. It formed an advisory committee chaired by Carolyn Simpson Harold, CPA, and comprised of local business and nonprofit leaders including Mayo Clinic Chief Administrative Officer AJ Dunn, Raghu Misra, founder and CEO of Sapna Foundation, The Link and Wired2Perform.

A longtime proponent of shared services, the Jessie Ball duPont Fund also supports these efforts. Mark Walker, director of The Jessie and senior program officer, noted, “The Jessie offers shared technology to all nonprofits operating in the building. Sharing services is a concept supported by the Jessie Ball duPont board members and our past two CEOs.” Research led to a partnership with Social Impact Commons, a capacity and field builder for fiscal sponsorship organizations. Its “management commons” model focuses on peer governance, intentional community building and a commitment to ongoing learning and mutual care between sponsors and projects.

Shared management not only increases efficiency, it also allows nonprofits to direct funds to programs rather than administrative overhead.

During a time when many nonprofits are laying off staff and are in danger of closing their doors, a fiscal

sponsorship can be a solution.

Thaddeus Squire, chief commons steward at Social Impact Commons, explained: “When a nonprofit enters into a fiscal sponsorship, it can exit at any time, offering the benefits of a merger without the permanence of the decision and the nonprofit’s loss of identity.”

The Nonprofit Center is currently educating members and gauging interest. It expects to make decision in August about whether to pursue fiscal sponsorships for Northeast Florida nonprofits.

“Our current nonprofit funding mentality of scarcity rather than abundance and hiding the true cost of service is reflected in the many challenges we are facing today,” said Dawn Lockhart, CEO of the Nonprofit Center. “The question is: Will philanthropy and the nonprofit sector invest in a new model?”

Rethinking Service Delivery Many youth and family services nonprofits provide direct services, such as in-house mental health counseling. Instead, what if nonprofits gave subsidies to their clients to pay for a private provider to deliver the service? The nonprofit staffing infrastructure would look very different, but the families would still receive the services they need.

Hope Haven CEO Stella Johnson is an advocate for this idea and she believes a fee-for-service model provides a logical, transitional step.

“Competing in the open market for market share serves as a barometer of quality: If no clients are willing to pay full fee, it raises the question of whether the service is truly valuable,” Johnson said. “This model also presents funders with a no-risk funding opportunity. By restricting contributions to financial assistance, they ensure funds only go toward actual services delivered.”

The end result is true equity for all families in our community, ensuring they all have the same access to the same providers in the same timeframe, regardless of income.

and academic achievement problems as a fee-for-service model, and subsidies, or financial assistance, are available based on need.

Artificial Intelligence There are many ways nonprofits can utilize AI in their operations to save resources. Downtown Ecumenical Services (DESC) Executive Director David Clark says employing AI saves him time.

“I use AI to create agendas and graphics, review documents for clarity and for research,” he said.

DESC meets the needs of people in emergency situations or experiencing poverty. It has an on-site food pantry and clothing center.

Volunteers in Medicine CEO Jennifer Ryan finds AI useful for structuring programmatic and human resources documents, such as MOUs, letters of recommendation and offer letters.

“AI will never make my decisions for me, and I will not use it word for word,” Ryan said. “It is a guide for streamlining and high-level components that should be included in documents.”

VIM, Jacksonville’s only free health clinic for the working uninsured, also uses AI for marketing purposes.

“We use Canva design that has AI built in to help make language cater to a specific audience or tone,” Ryan said.

“It also helped us get creative in brainstorming names for a new program.”

Ryan believes that in the future, AI may be able to assist with direct services.

“Healthcare professionals could look at the history in a patient’s chart to be able to make decisions to improve patient care and take steps to get to a diagnosis faster,” Ryan said.

At Barnabas Center, Inc., the team utilizes AI to help write first drafts of social media posts and to promote New to You Resale products for their thrift store. Development & Communications Director Nicola Barnack recommends purchasing the professional version of AI software and developing an AI policy.

Barnabas connects people, help and hope in Nassau County by providing health services, empowerment programs and nutrition services.

MEET Jeremy and Mallory

Haygood

Judging by the countless unforgettable experiences and the loving family they’ve built along the way, Mallory and Jeremy Haygood know a thing or two about embracing life’s wild ride.

Mallory was born here in Jacksonville and grew up on the west side of town, immersing herself in the vibrancy and traditions of the city. Jeremy, on the other hand, grew up on Florida’s Gulf Coast, though he spent time living all over the southeast. He moved to Jacksonville in 2013 and just a few short months later he met Mallory – whether by chance or by fate.

In 2014, Mallory’s cousin invited her to visit First Baptist Church. She met Jeremy on her first day at Sunday school and the two immediately hit it off, spending that entire summer kindling the embers of their romance until they officially started dating later that August. They were engaged before the end of the year and married in spring 2015 in a beautiful ceremony at Riverside United Methodist Church and accompanying reception at Timuquana Country Club.

“Needless to say, it was a whirlwind

romance,” Mallory said, reminiscing on their decade-long relationship.

Today, Mallory and Jeremy reside in Avondale with their two daughters, Emerson and Greer, and their two fur babies, Bodie and Gunner. The Haygood family spent the last four years living in Atlanta, Georgia before moving back to Jacksonville in 2024.

Since their return, the family is hoping to get more involved with the community, volunteering at events like The Players Championship whenever possible and supporting their daughters’ school.

During the week, Jeremy works in personal lines insurance and Mallory serves as a nurse and quality manager for Ascension St. Vincent’s, the same hospital system in which she was born. The kids attend school and stay busy as junior cheerleaders and avid members of a dance studio in San Marco. When they’re not busy with school or work, the Haygoods enjoy exploring the local, walkable parks in Avondale, tuning in for the “Daily Flavor” at Whit’s, their favorite spot for a sweet treat.

“I love the community feel [of the neighborhood] and the ability to walk to the

park with our daughters,” Mallory said.

Living close to the water is another aspect of the town that the Haygoods enjoy, taking out their new kayaks or going for walks on the beach. The family recently discovered Boneyard Beach, the mile-long stretch of beach at Big Talbot Island State Park filled with larger-than-life pieces of driftwood and decimated trees doubling as the perfect place for their daughters to let their imaginations run wild.

“We live for the weekends,” Mallory said. “We’re trying to be tourists in our own city and explore new places that we haven’t been before.”

In the coming year, the Haygoods are looking forward to spending their 10th anniversary somewhere new (and preferably tropical) and taking their daughters on their first camping trip to Flagler Beach. The family also hopes to be more active in this season’s Luminaria, which typically takes place at the end of the year.

“We love Luminaria,” Mallory said.

“This past year all of the bikers rode right by our house and our daughters were so excited to tell them ‘Merry Christmas,’ so this year we are hoping to ride in it ourselves.”

Jacksonville may be the largest city in Florida, the largest city in the contiguous United States by land area, but to the Haygoods, it’s just home.

“Jacksonville is filled with quaint, little neighborhoods. It has a rich history that links generations,” Mallory said. “Take the Dreamette, for instance. My grandparents went there, my mom used to take me there after doctor appointments, and now we take our girls.”

As the Haygoods continue to create lasting memories, they remain focused on building a future grounded in family, community, and exploration. For them, Jacksonville offers the perfect backdrop to a life full of new experiences and cherished traditions.

I am grateful our two adult children, Ben and Marley, were well prepared for college and life beyond our neighborhood and are now living independently in their own homes, sustained by their own paychecks and humbled by the expense and responsibility of their own pets. I am grateful for the raise! I am rich!

In all seriousness, this is a tremendous blessing. But it’s all due to the choices we were fortunate to make nearly 30 years ago when we began making a life here. We made a substantial investment in their future by: buying a home in Granada where they could be near (walk to!) friends and family; enrolling them in Riverside Presbyterian Day School and later The Bolles School to sharpen their global knowledge; and supporting local professionals (read orthodontists and pediatricians and piano teachers…and La Nopolera!) who gave them the tools, resources and nutrients they needed to excel in their environment.

It was worth every penny!

• The kids traveled around the country and world – from Philadelphia to Spain to Guatemala – for various exchange, athletic and community service trips during their time at Bolles. It opened their eyes to the big wide world and their places in it!

• While walking or biking to school was possible from our home, we enjoyed wonderful carpool arrangements until the kids could drive themselves.

• We stayed married and did life dual income, a feat unto itself!

• Though we ate most meals at home around our kitchen table, we treated ourselves to dining in or out at some of the city’s best restaurants – all just blocks from the house.

Same with grocery stores and gettin’ place places.

• We lived on a park, where we met many lifelong friends and got lots of support and advice.

• All aunts, uncles, cousins, parents and grands lived within a 10-mile radius.

• With healthcare facilities and hospitals just down the street, medical access was always convenient.

• We generously invested in pets – hamsters, cats, dogs and exactly one rat named Leslie – to demonstrate responsibility (and associated expense!)

It's also worth saying – this isn’t everyone’s story. In fact, this experience is in the minority. Here we go, wah wah… Debbie Downer time. In Jacksonville, 41.2% of households are married-couple families, and 26.3% of households have children under 18.

According to the website Private School Review, only 19% of the city’s K-12 population go to a private school. And though I couldn’t find statistics to put a number on it, we are also fortunate to have exceptional public schools within walking distance of our homes. Like, really lucky. And, woohoo, walkability? We are def part of a fairytale story here. According to Walk Score, Jacksonville has an overall Walk Score of 26, meaning our city as a whole is largely car-dependent. Our neighborhoods, however, get top billing: Downtown Jacksonville

has a Walk Score of 75, making it "Very Walkable," while Riverside and San Marco have Walk Scores of 71 and 70.

While the restaurants and grocery stores have been pretty par for our course, it is important to remember how lucky we are to own this reality. According to statistics from Feeding Northeast Florida and the University of North Florida, 12.6% of Duval County residents experience food insecurity, impacting about 19.6% of our city’s children and up to 20.1% of adults.

I don’t even know where I’m going with this other than to say, yes I am grateful that our adult children enjoyed a neighborhood upbringing that yielded independence and opportunity and yes, I am grateful in a bittersweet way that all the expense and investment of it all is in the rearview mirror. However, I am mindful our experience – more broadly, our neighborhoods and community offerings – is a small, shiny piece of a much bigger puzzle.

I guess I hope our kids – and their expensive pets, haha – will be aware of these nuances and imbalances as they walk away from our neighborhoods and into their own. I hope they take the very best of their hometown school and social experiences and help shape more balanced communities, wherever they are. The Resident communities are a wonderful investment and template for building similar experiences that are based on connection, relationships and excellence.

By Julie Kerns Garmendia The first time I met rescue dogs Chloe and, later, Hendrix, they could not have been more opposite even though they both have challenging physical conditions: Seven-pound, nine-year-old Chloe is a fluffy-white, puppy-mill Maltese mix with partial blindness; 80-pound, seven-year-old Hendrix, meanwhile, is a black Labrador mix with a permanent leg injury and limp that may require amputation. Both dogs now miraculously enjoy happy lives because they were saved by private nonprofit organizations and caring shelter volunteers who recognized their fantastic personalities that far outshadow their handicaps.

According to rescuers Jennifer Coscia, founder of The Animal Rescue and Adoption Agency (TARAA), and Lindsay Ryan, founder of Tender Heart Animal Retreat and Refuge, physical handicaps and health challenges, including heartworm treatment, do not prevent otherwise adoptable pets from enjoying normal lives and most activities with their owners.

“Treatable, minor ailments like ringworm are no reason to kill an animal, as many high-kill shelters do. The animals with skin conditions or heartworms deserve the chance to live and find their forever homes just as much as the cute, healthy animals,” said Coscia.

Ryan added that some shelters euthanize dogs that are deaf, blind, chase cats, or have other specific behaviors that can be managed and should not lead to a death sentence.

Chloe and Hendrix are perfect examples of how otherwise healthy animals with handicaps or treatable health issues can live normal lives as loving companions.

Chloe – The Animal Rescue and Adoption Agency (TARAA) The most striking thing about Maltese mix Chloe was how calmly and silently she reclined in her chair at the jam-packed Jacksonville International Airport. The petite girl patiently waited to board her flight with her adoptive parents, John and Patricia “Patty” McMenamin. The flight that would start their vacation to visit Phoenix family members was imminent, but Chloe seemed as relaxed as if she were snoozing on the family couch at home.

Putting many of the airport’s other traveling – and barking – dogs and complaining cats to shame, Chloe contentedly watched hordes of people chaotically rushing around. She nonchalantly ignored the blaring terminal announcements. She closely watched her parents and showed friendly interest in strangers.

“She loves people and enjoys traveling – despite her blindness - whether by car, RV, plane, or bike carrier,” Patty explained. “She goes everywhere with us.”

Chloe likes the RV life, traveling cross-country in the McMenamin motor home, which was bought in 2022 for Chloe on her birthday March 11. That raised some eyebrows among the McMenamins’ adult children, who declared, “We never received a gift like that!”

The McMenamins adopted Chloe, rescued by the nonprofit, TARAA. TARAA is a no-kill organization that rescues dogs and cats that other rescue groups often overlook because they are special needs animals or have health issues.

Operating with a network of foster homes and weekend adoption events at Petco Marsh Landing, TARAA has placed more than 4,000 animals in homes. Its website provides information regarding how to adopt, foster, volunteer, or

The McMenamins’ senior Maltese, Kipper, had recently passed away when they adopted Chloe and Patty recalled it was similar to having a newborn. Chloe was so small, in fact, Patty said only a cat harness would fit her.

“One of her eyes looked strangely bluish, and our vet immediately told us that she was blind in that eye, and although her other eye is normal, it is prone to infections.

But none of this stops Chloe from doing everything with us,” Patty added.

Chloe’s medical issues are typical of puppy-mill-bred dogs that often suffer from a range of immediate health problems and genetic disorders, and can exhibit negative behaviors, according to the Humane Society of the United States.

Hendrix – Tender Heart Animal Retreat and Refuge Hendrix is a large, all-black Labrador retriever mix that ended up as an unclaimed stray at Jacksonville’s Animal Care & Protective Services (ACPS). A stunning, silkycoated dog, Hendrix doesn’t often move because one of his front legs hangs limply, dangling from his body. At the top of that leg, a large round mass is clearly visible. It can be jarring to see him move when he does.

ACPS veterinarians diagnosed it as an injury of unknown origin that was not treated and healed on its own, leaving him disabled. They believed the large mass was benign scar tissue.

Hendrix had learned to live with his dangling leg and uses it for some balance.

It was decided that no further treatment was necessary because Hendrix could walk and run, albeit with a pronounced limp, and seemed unbothered by his disability. So, the handsome, intelligent Hendrix returned to his kennel to await a potential adopter who might overlook his handicap.

Compassionate volunteers who adored Hendrix actively promoted him on social media, fearing for his future. They understood that his large size made his small shelter kennel a miserable situation that could lead to depression or negative behaviors. They also knew that all-black animals – and large dogs – are the least likely to be adopted, facts proven by shelter statistics. Add a pronounced disability and limp, and Hendrix’s prospects for a forever family appeared remote despite his affectionate, hilarious personality. He only had one foster-to-adoption placement, and it failed: He was returned to ACPS. Enter volunteer and tireless shelter pet adoption advocate Lynda Gridley. She not only found a private, no-kill nonprofit rescue to remove Hendrix from ACPS, but she also found another foster-to-adopt placement that has been successful so far. Hendrix’s foster mom reports that he is a constant companion, does goofy zoomies around his huge

backyard, plays gently with the family’s nine- and fiveyear-old boys, and happily assumes top-dog status over the resident bossy rescue chihuahuas who follow the gentle giant around like ducklings.

Tender Heart Animal Retreat and Rescue founder Ryan, not only accepted Hendrix but also had him examined at the University of Florida (UF) Veterinary Clinic, recognized as a regional cutting-edge animal care facility. UF veterinarians ruled out cancer but diagnosed atrophy and probable nerve damage in his leg. Hendrix’s next appointment is with a UF veterinarian orthopedic specialist to determine if anything further should be done.

Gridley knew of Tender Heart’s mission to “pull” less adoptable, at-risk dogs from several counties’ most crowded or kill shelters. Ryan accepts animals no one wants and provides whatever they need in order to dramatically improve adoptability. Ryan does all dog training herself and is currently teaching sign language to a deaf German shepherd.

She ensures that dogs needing specialized veterinarian care or surgery receive treatment unavailable at most shelters.

As a newer animal rescue operating through a foster network, Ryan primarily uses her personal funds to finance rescue efforts aimed at removing at-risk animals from various rural shelters and the chronically overcrowded Jacksonville ACPS. She needs financial contributions to construct a simple, insulated facility to house dogs while they undergo rehabilitation, training, or medical recovery.

Additionally, she aims to build a modest boarding kennel at the front of her property to generate income for rescue expenses, veterinary care, and surgeries. Ryan also provides a small free pet food pantry and helps secure spay and neuter services for the pets of needy families. She invites businesses, community clubs, or Eagle Scouts to contact her to volunteer labor or materials for these construction projects.

Tender Heart Animal Retreat and Refuge has a Facebook page while its website is being constructed. The page includes Ryan’s Amazon Wish List and ways to donate. Fencing and construction materials, including labor or in-kind donations, are greatly appreciated. Tender Heart needs remote social media help, grant writers, communications, and computer volunteers who can offer even a couple of hours each week.

Animal fosters and transporters living anywhere from Jacksonville to Gainesville are also needed.

The two private, all-volunteer nonprofit rescues that saved Chloe and Hendrix receive zero government funding and can only continue saving animals because of community donations. They both ensure that their adoptable animals are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and fully vetted, wormed, healthy, and on monthly heartworm and pest preventative medication. If an adoption fee is required, it is solely to help cover the cost of veterinarian services. All financial donations to nonprofit organizations are tax-deductible.

Huckins Yachts Sold, New Owner Plots Course

There’s a new owner at the legendary boatyard on the Ortega River, where Huckins Yachts and the Huckins Yacht Corporation has operated since 1946. The company first operated downtown at East 6th Street, in its yard on Jacksonville’s waterfront before moving to its current yard, where a recent transfer of company ownership was recognized.

For the first time in almost a century, the business is no longer family owned and operated. Cindy Purcell, daughter of Frank Pembroke Huckins and the third-generation owner of the company alongside her husband Buddy, celebrated the passing of the helm, April 4, at the boatyard with friends, family and longtime associates.

For new owner, Andy Tyska, founder of Bristol Marine, it wasn’t just time to celebrate, it was also time to recognize the legacy, the team and the future plans for the brand. The ceremony kicked off with the current general manager Sarah Gielow welcoming those in attendance, followed by a toast in honor of the Purcell’s.

“We’re here to celebrate two people who are Huckins,…Cindy and Buddy, whose 50 years of dedicated

stewardship has shaped Huckins into the one-of-a-kind place that it is today. I’ve had the pleasure of working with them for the past 10 years, and in that time, they’ve taught me more than I could ever have imagined, not just about boats; about leadership, community, that cult Huckins community some of you know about, and the importance of doing things the right way.”

“We being third generation…they say the third generation sinks the ship,” said Cindy Purcell with a laugh and a big smile, as she shared remarks about the legacy and her tenure in the family business. “It’s been a wonderful 50plus years. It’s not two people, owners/operators that make a company successful, it’s always the people behind them… the team behind them. And Buddy and I have had some wonderful people working for us over the years and I want to thank every one of them.”

I’m very happy and very pleased that Andy is taking the stewardship of the boatyard. He has great experience, he owns three historical yards up North…he understands the brand and I’m very pleased that he will continue to make this successful,” she continued.

Purcell then passed the microphone to Tyska, who thanked those present and shared his feelings about the recent acquisition. “[I’m just] Overwhelmed by the presence of all of you here tonight. I think Cindy was being awfully modest in the words that she spoke about weight of the impact that not just herself, but Buddy have had at Huckins here over the last 50 years,” said Tyska.

“It would be an understatement for me to, in any way, for me to describe the weight of the obligation that I feel in carrying those [boatbuilding excellence, brand] efforts forward, and can’t say enough about how welcoming Cindy and Buddy have been to me here, getting me up to speed on not just the operations, but sharing their ideas about what is next.”

Tyska was sure to recognize and thank Sarah Gielow, the current general manager and the staffers who have been holding down the yard for Huckins Yachts, many can claim over 30-plus years of loyalty. Geared Up for Success Par for a Purpose This year’s Mulligan for the Mission Golf Tournament, benefitting Ascension St. Vincent’s Foundation, raised a recordbreaking $356,665 last month.

Now in its 16th year, this annual charity golf event was held at THE PLAYERS Stadium Course on Sunday and Monday, April 13 and 14. Proceeds benefit the foundation’s Mobile Health Dr. Gavin P. Duffy, Dr. Van Rensburg, and Cody Boswell of Southeast Orthopedic Specialists Outcomes by HOPCo at Mulligans for the Outreach Ministry.

Mobile Health Outreach Ministry is a mobile provider of free preventative and acute medical care for Northeast Florida families who would not otherwise have access to healthcare.

It was a record-setting year for the 10th annual San Jose Car and Truck Show, which raised $13,000 for the Bishop John J. Snyder Community Center.

The annual event was held at St. Augustine’s Dupont Station Shopping Center on Saturday, April 5, and featured 80 vehicles of various types and eras across 12 categories.

A special display of five vehicles from the First Florida Chapter of the Military Vehicle Preservation Association was on hand as well.

This record-breaking anniversary event has pushed this fundraiser, launched in 2016 by Joe DeSalvo, to more than $85,000 for The San Jose Apartments for seniors. DeSalvo also serves as the show’s honorary chairman.

The Best in Show award went to a 1968 Chevy Chevelle by Visual FX Custom Paint and Collision owners Paul and Becky Holman, while the People’s Choice Award went to Dave Garlington’s 1956 Peacock Blue Ford Thunderbird.

“Celebrating 10 years is a milestone,’’ said Alma Ballard, executive director/ management agent of Family Housing Management Company. “We had a wonderful turnout of car owners and visitors, especially on a beautiful day that had several other car events scheduled. We’re appreciative that these car enthusiasts chose to support our show.”

Daniel hosted its 24th annual Hank Haynes Golf Classic at the Timuquana Country Club on Monday, April 14.

The golf classic serves not only as a fundraiser for Daniel, the “oldest childserving agency” in the state, but also a tribute to its namesake, Caldwell “Hank” Haynes, longtime friend and trustee to Daniel for nearly 40 years.

Taking a Victory Lap The Assumption Catholic School Track and Field team wrapped up their 2024-25 season on a high note by bringing home 78 ribbons from the track meet held at Providence Day School on Wednesday, March 5.

Assumption track and field athletes set nearly 70 personal records at the track meet, across four events: running, jumping, throwing and hurdling.

The girls’ team was the meet’s overall champions, while the boys’ team finished fourth.

Three Assumption track athletes will be traveling to Bradenton, Florida this month to compete in the FLYRA Middle School State Track and Field Championship: Nolan Trunell-Laputka (discus), Graziana Gowdy (3,000 meter and 1,500 meter) and Evelyn Slattery (1,500 meter).

Assumption Track and Field Team closes their 2024-25 season with a strong finish at the March 5 track meet at Providence Day School.

Wolfson student Graham Glasheen leads a conversation about AI and technology in the workforce with several notable Jacksonville faces at the Leadership Florida Northeast regional event at MOCA Jacksonville.

Samuel Wolfson School for Advanced Studies student Graham Glasheen joined the conversation at Leadership Florida Northeast’s regional event exploring the impact of artificial intelligence, virtual reality, augmented reality and other technologies.

“Igniting Innovation: AI and Tech-Powered Futures in Education and the Workforce” was held on Saturday, April 5, at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) Jacksonville. Glasheen was the only high school student involved in the programming, moderating a panel discussion on “AI and Technology in the Workforce.”

Glasheen’s was one of two panel discussions at this sold-out event, with the other being “AI and Technology in Education.” Panelists in Glasheen’s discussion included Jacksonville Transportation Authority Senior Vice President and Chief Infrastructure and Development Officer Greer Johnson Gillis, Chang Robotics CEO Matthew Chang, Dean of Jacksonville University College of Law Nick Allard and Jax Chamber Chief Innovation Officer Dr. Carlton Robinson.

McClure Earns Spot on Academic All-State Team Bolles Senior Elizabeth McClure will be joining the 2025 Florida Dairy Farmers Academic All-State Team.

The FHSAA announced on April 9.

McClure and the 23 other seniors named to the team will be celebrated at a banquet dinner on Monday, June 2. Each will receive a commemorative medallion along with a $1,700 scholarship. Additionally, one male and one female student will be named the Ronald N. Davis Scholar-Athletes of the Year. This accolade is the most prestigious honor FHSAA bestows on exceptional, active student-athletes.

A minimum graduating 3.5 unweighted GPA and a minimum of two varsity letters in at least two different sports during junior and senior years are required to be eligible for this all-state honor.

An Advanced Placement Scholar with Honors, an Advanced Placement Scholar with WE Service Recognition and a 4.0 GPA, McClure ranks in the top 10% of her class. She competes on the Bolles’ cross country and track and field teams, placing in the top 25 at the state track and field championships.

Additionally, McClure has previously been named Honor Council co-president, was the founder and captain of the Bolles Speech Team, and served as treasurer of the Bolles Supporting First Responders Club.

She plans to study premedicine at the University of Florida.

This honor is bestowed upon a male and female student from area schools every month for outstanding character, scholarship, leadership and community service. With this recognition, Rodriguez and McCoy will be entered into the Exchange Club’s scholarship competition for Student of the Year.

Rodriguez is a National Merit Commended Scholar and AP Scholar with Distinction, holding membership in several honor societies and serving as captain of the cross-country team. She has completed nearly 450 community service hours and serves on the student government, BK student ambassadors, BK Buddies and the Interact Club. In the fall, she will attend the University of Notre Dame.

McCoy is also a National Merit Commended Scholar and AP Scholar with Distinction and, like Rodriguez, holds membership in the same honor societies. McCoy plays for both the soccer and track and field teams. He has completed nearly 300 hours of volunteer work, which includes missions with YoungLife Tanzania, Camp I Am Special and TopSoccer.

McCoy is attending Georgetown University this fall.

Episcopal Students Shine at State Science Fair

Episcopal students attend the 70th annual State Science and Engineering Fair of Florida.

Four students from Bishop Kenny High School joined other high school students from the Diocese of St. Augustine to participate in Catholic Days at the Capitol to engage with lawmakers on issues that reflect values of the Catholic Church.

Along with Bishop Kenny High School Campus Ministry Coordinator Brad Winkler and Religion Department faculty member Natalie Chevrel, senior Bridget Lawrence and juniors Giulia Angiolillo, Kasey Gjoka and Rafaela Ramirez traveled to Tallahassee, where Bishop Erik Pohlmeier delivered the opening prayer and welcome that kicked off the two-day event.

Held on March 18 and 19 at Florida’s Capitol, the event provided students opportunities to meet state legislators and their aides, gain insight from the Florida Conference of Catholic Bishops and speak with state representatives, expanding their perspectives and deepening their understanding of the legislative process.

Episcopal School of Jacksonville is celebrating several of its students after exceptional performances at the 70th annual State Science and Engineering Fair of Florida at the RP Funding Center in central Florida.

Students in grades six through eight exhibited more than 800 projects at this threeday fair from March 25 to 27. Elizabeth Butterfield brought home second place in the environmental engineering category for her project, which predicted future mangrove locations in Northeast Florida using QGIS and random forest regression.

Parthiv Reddy, Caden Lipari, Alex Chindris, James Steffes, Lilly McCoy, Christian Lee, Payton Marousky, Evelyn Carroll, Blaire Massey and Grace Mass secured third, fourth, Honorable Mention, and Recognition Awards.

Following the judging, students also met with Episcopal School of Jacksonville Alumna Carly Crump Boullosa to learn about her high school experiences during her investigation of the Dengue virus. Over the course of several years, Boullosa secured first-place victories at state and international science fairs and was named the recipient of the Dudley Herschbach Award, which allowed her to attend the Nobel Prize Ceremonies in Sweden to present her project to Nobel laureates.

Guests gathered at Springfield’s Brick and Beam for an evening of wine and art to support programming for The Sanctuary on 8th Street on Friday, April 11.

The second annual Paint and Sip event raised funds for Sanctuary on 8th Street’s Weekend Nutrition Bags of Hope program, focused on addressing food insecurity within the community. Participants enjoyed wine and catered bites while following instructors in a guided evening to create artworks centered around a theme of growth.

As its name suggests, the program provides weekly bags of essential groceries to Sanctuary families throughout the month.

The program was launched in 2020.

Behind the Curtain: The Douglas Anderson Technical Theatre Program

Douglas Anderson Technical Theatre students are the force responsible for quite literally setting the stage for the Department of Theatre’s four showstopping productions performed each season.

These students take on a schedule of three to four specialized courses a year, including fabrication and rigging, scenic painting, lighting and sound, drawing and Paul Denayer writing lighting cues with student Photos: GeekChic Photography rendering, and period styles, all designer Jada Ferguson. while working on crews for the Ruihan Liu (scenic paint), and Valeriya season’s four productions.

dedicated students.

“Our students are something special,” Nedviga said. “But talent is not only what impresses me. The dedication to their craft and the sacrifices they make every day to make (the shows) better is what makes our students different. They are professionals: they commit to what they’re doing and they follow through to make sure it is done in the best possible way.”

Students must audition to join the Technical Theatre program, which offers real-world application in the arts for those who advance through the audition process. Students interested in auditioning must present two projects he or she has produced, which will be evaluated based on original design ideas and how they were implemented in at least two of six categories: scenic design, costume design, sewing, carpentry, painting and properties.

The audition process also involves a personal interview segment.

Another round of auditions for the 2025-26 school year will take place on May 27.

A Berry Successful Weekend

Concert on the Farm

It was a record-breaking year for North Florida School of Special Education’s Berry Good Farms Weekend Festival: Not only did record-breaking crowds attend the annual event, but generous advocates and matching gifts from the Delores Barr Weaver Legacy Fund and a surprise anonymous donor made this year’s festival the most successful yet.

The two-day festival was held on Friday, April 4 and Sunday, April 6, and was chaired

by Richard and Ginny Dostie, on behalf of the Dostie Family. In addition to raising funds

to continue supporting NFSSE’s vocational and therapeutic programming, this year’s festivities also celebrated the fifth anniversary of the Delores Barr Weaver Therapeutic Equestrian Center.

Friday’s Concert on the Farm featured live music by The Cam Wheaton Band and Top Shelf, bites from local food trucks and craft cocktails, while Sunday’s traditional Dinner on the Farm offered a casual but elegant farm-to-table dinner beneath the equestrian center’s riding pavilion.

By Lauren Weedon Hopkins Since he was a young boy, retired orthopedic surgeon Dr. John Lovejoy, Jr., 86, has appreciated the values of thrift and reuse.

“My mother was a contractor and she built our home in the 1940s,” he reminisced while sitting in the living room of that same San Jose home he still lives in today with his wife of 58 years, Harriet. “She discovered a school that had closed and was selling its building materials. My job was to straighten out the used nails and clean the bricks. I received $5 for cleaning

1,000 bricks,” he laughed.

He learned about giving back from his father, also an orthopedic surgeon, who would review outstanding patient bills during the holidays.

“He knew his patients that were struggling, so he would write ‘Paid in full, Merry Christmas’ on their bills and send them back,” he said.

Lovejoy began putting these values into practice while he was serving on the Navy’s surgical team during the Vietnam

“We waste so much that others could use,” he said.

Lovejoy took those supplies into the village to help the indigent people living there.

Lovejoy grew up in Jacksonville and attended second through 12th grades at Alfred I. duPont Middle School. He completed his undergraduate degree at Duke University and then attended the University of Florida for medical school.

After completing a residency at the Atlanta Medical Center, Lovejoy went to work as an orthopedic surgeon at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (formerly the Naval National Medical Center) in Bethesda, Maryland.

“I operated on Gerald Ford’s knee, and we became great friends,” he said. “I attended Nixon’s inauguration as his guest and sat in the second row.”

After his time in Vietnam, he moved back to Jacksonville. “I practiced at St. Luke’s, the hospital I was born in, and I retired from there when Mayo sold it to St. Vincent’s.”

While building a successful career in the U.S., he also felt the pull to care for others in less fortunate countries as a volunteer physician.

Lovejoy began his international aid efforts in Grenada, where he taught orthopedists for 20 years. His friend, the late Dr. George Fipp, told him he was needed in Haiti, so Lovejoy began serving at Hôpital Sacré Coeur in Milot, Haiti, during the 1980s. Even his children got involved.

“My daughter, Ellen, spent spring break of her senior year working in the OR and also went into the mountains with a dentist and helped pull 150 rotting teeth,” he said.

“She told me, ‘Dad, I never realized how much I had.’”

Hôpital Sacré Coeur, which opened in 1968, is the largest private hospital for the 3.2 million people living in Northern Haiti. The CRUDEM Foundation assumed supervision of and financial responsibility for the hospital in 1986. In 2012, Holy Name Medical Center of Teaneck, New Jersey, incorporated CRUDEM and in 2020, the mission was renamed Haiti Health Promise.

An earthquake in January 2010 devastated Haiti; more than 222,500 people were killed and 300,000 people were injured. Just days after the earthquake, Lovejoy took a small team and, with his naval triage training, set up a 550-bed MASH-like unit to treat hundreds of wounded citizens, performing more than

180 surgeries, many of them amputations.

His son, John, also an orthopedic surgeon, was part of that team. It was an intense time for the physicians, who were operating around the clock.

“We’re human and we know the suffering that they are all having and we are trying to help,” he said. “You can’t help but get emotionally involved, but you just keep working and doing the best you can.”

With that many amputees, Lovejoy oversaw the opening of the country’s first prosthetics lab in 2015. Now it’s run by Haitian doctors who received their training courtesy of Holy Name’s support.

Through Lovejoy’s dedication, Hôpital Sacré Coeur recently expanded from 63 beds when he first began his mission trips to 230 beds today. As a board member of Holy Name Medical Center, he helped raise money and secure in-kind donations from local medical partners.

“The lights came from Baptist and the beds came from Mayo,” he said. “What would have taken $6 million to build in the United States, cost $600,000 in Haiti.”

Since COVID-19 and ongoing political unrest in Haiti, Lovejoy has been unable to travel to Milot, but that has not stopped him from helping its citizens. Nearly half of Haiti’s population is experiencing acute food insecurity, which can lead to malnutrition and damage to physical and cognitive development.

On April 10, he sponsored a “packathon” at Episcopal School of Jacksonville to pack 50,000 meals for hungry children and adults.

“Each meal costs 44 cents, so we raised $22,000,” he shared. “One meal bag contains six nutritious meals for a family.”

Participating students received service hours and, Lovejoy hopes, a desire to keep volunteering. “You get more from giving back,” he said.
