A SPRINGTIME AFFAIR
S
Hillary Latos with Armie Hammer
pring represents rebirth and renewal and and this month we celebrate the best of spring. Our cover story this month is Tarak Sansal, the trailblazing and inspirational CEO and founder of ROMIO- a game changing app catering to the busy New Yorker. If there ever was a singular commonality amongst New Yorkers it is that time seems to move at a heightened and frenzied pace and is one of our most precious commodities. Sansal’s solution was to create an app that developed a community of vetted experts and specialists for hire to assist in all areas of our lives. The community includes everything from dog walkers to tutors, personal chefs, handymen, nannies, hair stylists, event planners, and more that cater to the multi-faceted needs of busy New Yorkers. With the warmer temperatures we have come out of the winter hibernation making this an ideal time to get out and explore our wonderful city. We ventured out to bring you the best new openings and lounges from New York City hotspots to street food gems and Mediterranean inspired boozy brunches. We also featured the best of Broadway and not to miss art exhibitions happening in our cultural mecca. Of course spring escapes are always at the top of our list. This month we ventured around the world from the exotic and otherworldly landscape of French Polynesia to an eco-luxe jungle in Nicaragua. Closer to home we traveled to Los Angeles on the heels of the Academy Awards, Puerto Vallarta, South Florida, and relished in the quiet barefoot luxury of the Bahamas. In the spirit of rebirth and renewal, this is a great time to embrace change. Whether you want to change something about yourself, learn a new skill, change an outmoded way of thinking or even the status quo, you have the power within to instill change in your life. Taking that leap of faith can present a life changing turning point for the better.

THE VOLVO OCEAN RACE The Race of a Lifetime By Tash Bazika
I
t is the highly anticipated event of the year, where teams are put to the ultimate test as they battle Mother Nature in a race against time. Since 1973, the Volvo Ocean Race has pushed even the great sailors to their limits and the 20172018 edition is no different. Teams will endure a harrowing 45,000 nautical miles around the world, crossing four oceans, touching six continents and twelve landmark host cities.
Every day, for 24 hours a day, teams work immensely hard to pursue even the smallest advantages to make a difference and get ahead of all the other teams.
Often hailed as the longest and toughest professional sporting event in the world, the race sets sail on 22 October 2017 in Alicante, Spain and halts at The Hague in Netherlands eight months later. The other cities that will be hosting the teams on their journey include Lisbon, Cape Town, Melbourne, Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Auckland, Newport RI, Cardiff and Gothenburg.
Each team is a collection of men and women from all over the world who possess the strength and passion to endure such a marathon as this. Team AzkoNobel were the first to enter the 2017-2018 edition, keeping alive the Dutch tradition in this race. The Dongfeng race team returns for a consecutive year after claiming a podium finish and winning a historic homecoming leg into Sanya in the 2014-2015 edition. The Spanish team MAPFRE also returns for a second consecutive edition following a successful debut in 2014-15, in which they claimed podium finishes four times. American duo Charlie Enright and Mark Towill lead the Vestas 11th Hour racing team with a passionate sustainability message to make an impact on and off the water. Representing Hong Kong is the Sun Hung Kai/Scalliwag team skippered by experienced Aus-
The race sits, just as it always has, at the intersection of human adventure and world-class competition. Every team is equipped with onboard reporters who provide the fans back home with a unique insight into the relentless individuals who have spent their life, training and preparing for this vigorous race that takes place every 3 years. Spectators will see what it takes to win a race of this magnitude.
20 | resident.com
The competition is fierce and with the current era of One Design racing, the only way to win is to sail harder and smarter than competitors, the race is won out on the water as opposed to by design.
tralian David Witt who competed in the 1977-98 edition. Team Brunel has competed in four Volvo Ocean races and returns for a second consecutive edition this year. A consortium of Dutch companies including Brunel, Abel, Royal Huisemen and EY will support an initiative known as ‘Engineering the future.’ Skipper Bouwe Bekking is back at the helm for his eighth attempt at the trophy. Even though there is no prize money for the winners, the satisfaction of seeing your name etched into one of the silver rings of the Volvo Ocean Race trophy is a prize beyond compare for sailors who dreamt of this exact moment. The winners will join legends and heroic figures such as Éric Tabarly, Conny Van Rietschoten, Grant Dalton and Ian Walker. In the last edition, a total of 2.4 million people visited the race villages to get a glimpse of the heroes and experience first-hand the adrenaline of the race. Millions more followed the race on digital platforms and this edition brings new technologies so fans can be closer to the action with more live updates from the boats as they race for a chance to be revered as legends.

I don’t like pain, exactly, but as a ballerina, I lived in constant pain. At ballet school if someone had painkillers, we divided them among us. We were all addicted.”

IMANÍ SCOTT What You Need to Know about Pop/Funk Music’s New Rising Star By Elizabeth Darwen
D
rawing on musical influences from past and present legends such as Beyoncé, Etta James and Chaka Khan, Houston-born singer Imaní Scott brings a unique voice and presence to her music. Says Imaní, “When you think of a quality sound and a lasting legacy, these are among the names that come to mind.” Imaní aims to bring happiness back to music with her bold and soulful vocals that mesh a little bit of R&B, Pop, Hip-Hop and Funk for a fresh take on multi-genre music. This talented singer-songwriter recently released her hot new single “Get Litty,” ahead of the highly anticipated release of her debut LP titled “The Introduction,” produced entirely by famous producer Isaac “Chill” Yowman, who produced Beyoncé’s “Beyoncé” album. Imaní’s funkadelic dialect, electrifying hairstyles, triumphant vocals and sensational stage presence is setting the stage to position her as the next emerging star.
The release of her second single “All Over Again” took the music industry by storm; an effortless sonic journey blending R&B, Pop, Hip-Hop, Funk, Reggaeton, and Country, that appeals to the masses, young and old, and will make you want to get up and dance. The pop funk singer is bringing back funk with a refreshing new sound that incites excitement and energy every time you listen, as evident in her most recent single “Throwing Glitter”, from her debut LP. The songstress is determined to create music that stirs up positive emotions; “These days we want to be so numb to everything, but I want to put that emotion back in the music, that Earth, Wind & Fire, so we can live in the moment.” Imaní continues, “I am determined to bring live instrumentation back to the music, to fulfill what we once had and get away from the artificial sound. I want to bring intelligence back to people listening and get us to level back up.”
Imaní recently kicked off her Diamond Rush tour, in which she performs with established acts such as Big Boi of the Dynaminc duo OutKast, the legendary heartthrobs Bel Biv Devoe (BBD), Wyclef Jean, Teedra Moses and Adrian Marcel, to name a few. The Diamond Rush tour is coming to San Diego, CA; Houston, TX; Los Angeles, CA; New Orleans, LA; Austin, TX; and to New York, NY in Spring 2018.
For more information about Imaní Scott and her Diamond Rush tour: Imaníscottmusic.com Follow Imaní Scott on social media: @ImaníScott_ Imaní’s music is available on iTunes, Google Play, Spotify, SoundCloud and Amazon music.

A WITNESS TO HISTORY FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHER DOUG MENUEZ By George Wayne
D
oug Menuez is the acclaimed photojournalist who-- as with any great witness to history- was in the right place at the right time with the right camera. His career began in 1981 as an intern to the Washington Post. It was only four years later in 1985 that he found himself in Silicon Valley exploring and struggling alongside the young, still unknown scions of the emerging tech industry. He befriended the likes of Steve Jobs and Bill Gates etc. while wielding his camera and capturing some of the most profound and earliest images of the men who would become the pioneers and founding fathers of the 20th century tech industry. Many of these images found their way into his highly acclaimed book Fearless Genius: The Digital Revolution 1985-2000 which is regarded as one of the most important visual documents to the early beginnings of the men and few women who, indeed, truly led a revolution. Many of these images, some still never before

published, will now form a fine art photography exhibition for his first one man solo exhibition at the leading Chelsea High Line HG Contemporary Gallery where he is represented by Philippe HoerleGuggenheim. Here we have the most detailed and exclusive interview the photographer has ever granted recalling those early days in Silicon Valley capturing the magic, the triumphs and disasters while witnessing history. HG Contemporary is located at 527 West 23rd Street. Opening Hours Monday thru Saturday 11:00 am to 6:00 pm GEORGE WAYNE - Why do this fine art photography show and why now? These images are not new. They have been featured in your best-selling book. Why do you now feel this show will hold any particular resonance?
DOUG MENUEZ - A few weeks ago a young entrepreneur from India posted on Facebook that I saved him from severe depression related to the crash of his startup through the Fearless Genius book. He studied the photos and text and gained a new perspective on failure as he learned how differently failure is viewed in Silicon Valley. He said he used the book as a bible, reading it page by page, gaining inspiration. He went on to start a new company providing resources for founders of startups, including mental health in addition to funding and other stuff. So yeah images from history matter, not only to gain perspective, inspiration and see new opportunities for the future, but to avoid the mistakes of the past. Young entrepreneurs come to my talks and reach out to me all the time to tell me the book of photographs is helpful. Often they are very emotional as they are connecting with stories of sacrifice and creativity that led to change innovation they were not aware of - it was freaking hard what they accomplished back then.

And that history is not taught much at all today. So I know this work resonates with audiences of all kinds as over 100 million people have now been exposed to it worldwide. This work has been touring continuously since the 2012 Moscow Photobiennale and keeps getting requested. But I think these images speak to people across a wide spectrum outside of tech. We are at a new inflection point in human history and technology development. You can see this with all the other nascent technology about to start scaling. It’s really important to pay attention to how technology is shaping our lives, will shape our lives in the near future, and where it all came from. My work asks who were the people who built our world and what were their motivations then? What motivates them today? That’s why we wanted to do this show now. Technology runs every aspect of our lives now. We can be sheep to slaughter or wake up and have a voice. Technologies are just tools for good. No, we didn’t get a vote on that atom bomb. We won’t be asked if we want to upload our brains into a hive mind and live forever in the coming singularity either. And Philippe and HG Contemporary have taken the work and put it in a new context as fine art. Which is how I saw it- a subjective interpretation of a hidden tribe that possessed immense power to change all our lives. In my work I’ve always been interested in the core human condition and culture of a people. I don’t care if I’m shooting AIDS orphans in Africa or tech geniuses in Palo Alto, all humans have universal truths, connections we all share, and finding those
connections visually is exciting to me. So this show is a new step for me that brought the project full circle from art school through my] career and back to art, for which I’m extremely grateful. GW – How did you start in those early days where you were part of the incubation and birth of Silicon Valley? DM- I returned from covering the famine and conflict in Ethiopia and Eritrea for Newsweek overwhelmed by the immense scale of human suffering I witnessed. I decided I needed to find a positive story about tangible change for the better, for the human race and for my own life. That’s when Steve Jobs was forced out at Apple and announced he was building a super computer for education. I knew that was the root solution to most social issues. Through friends I reached out and asked him for complete access to document the creation of this computer from beginning to shipping, to capture his process of innovation for LIFE magazine. Shockingly he agreed! And he gave me total access 24/7. GW- You, and for that matter, neither anyone else not even Steve Jobs and Bill Gates could ever have managed the revolution they were creating! Do you ever stop to think back and look back and say to yourself -- ‘Wow! I was in the right place and the right moment at the right time. And I documented it all for posterity’! DM- Ha! Well, not really but when you put it like that, it feels like I got very lucky. I will say my colleagues thought I was nuts shooting in Silicon Valley with nerds and bad flourescent light. Most of the action was unphotographable. But actually we kind of did know something special
was happening- at least they did. But they could see what could happen if they succeeded and would tell me how they saw the future. They were talking about cell phones and basically everything we have now way back then. And I started to believe them once I got inside the PR bubble and learned what was really going on. But no, it was not top of mind. I just got deeper and deeper into it and became obsessed with these people and their creative power. I also had not changed the world yet with my photographs but there, right in front of me were the people who actually were changing the world. All I had to do was make a record of that and that became my purpose. And the last thing Steve said to me when I stopped documenting him was “Don’t worry Doug, you’ll have fun with these photographs someday, they’re amazing!” He definitely had a vision of the future and believed his work would have a huge impact. After all, he’d changed the world twice by 1985 so I had to give him the benefit of the doubt. GW- What was Steve Jobs like? You knew the real Steve Jobs. DM- Ahhhh, well, how much time do you have? It feels like we put now have this mythology about Steve, that he was either a genius or a jerk. But he was human, like all of us, with layers of complexity. Yes he could rude or even brutal, and we all have our scars, but he could also be an amazing teacher. He was also very sweet and kind. He would come bounding up the stairs into work every day on fire with energy and enthusiasm, just incredibly driven and... View the ful interview at: resident.com/?p=114173

JACKIE ROGERS
la dolce vita’s continued influence on this iconic fashion designers style By Peter Elston
J
ackie Rogers holds the unique distinction of being possibly the only living fashion designer who personally learned from fashion icon Coco Chanel and remains actively engaged in the craft of designing and producing couture fashions. Jackie has for many seasons continued to inspire with her collections which feature bold designs and unexpected fabric selections. Many of Rogers’ collections are influenced by her friendships with some of the world’s most well-known people and her time spent in some of the most fascinating cities in the world. Rogers has lived a life full of inspiration – from big-band singer to Hollywood starlet, denizen of Rome’s la dolce vita in the company of princes and magnates, a muse for Federico Fellini, Coco Chanel’s favored mannequin, and a successful New York model. The makers of HBO’s recent 2017 documentary on the life of Italian industrialist Gianni Agnelli turned to Jackie as one of the tastemakers from that period and for her insights into the lifestyle and the man. Jackie Rogers has dressed some of the most recognized women in entertainment, politics and finance, and her prestigious client list includes icons including Jackie Onassis. In terms of her design credo Jackie utilizes materials other designers steer away from to create unique, timeless fashions. From blouses to pants to beautiful gowns, each piece is handcrafted in the New York showroom to ensure the highest standard of quality. When you enter a room, the

beauty and craftsmanship of a signature Jackie Rogers design is unmistakable as Jackie still uses sewing techniques she perfected while originally working with Coco Chanel at the latter’s Paris atelier. It is her zest for both life and the experiences it offers that gives Jackie Rogers her extraordinarily sophisticated point of view, which translates into designs that make a statement of sophistication and style with every piece being impeccably tailored. The signature Jackie Rogers garment is the burlap jacket, which Jackie tailors to the body, creating beautifully structured designs. These often feature a perfectly paired colorduo, imparting to the wearer a striking, bold and modern look. Some of the most extraordinary experiences on Roger’s personal resume which have informed her fasion designs includes her past as a runway
model for the most renowned couturiers of Rome, including Simonetta and Fabiani, and her role in Fellini’s cult classic film 8 ½ where she starred against Marcello Mastroianni. However most impressive of all is probably her time working at the House of Chanel, where she absorbed the immaculate style and techniques of her mentor. Said Rogers, “It was the greatest experience of my life. I never realized what an effect she [Coco Chanel] had on me.” The effect was to prove lasting, and Rogers devoted her life to being a fashion designer on her return to New York. Rogers is often referred to as “America’s Coco Chanel,” and she likes to point out that, “I do not believe in fashion, I believe in style,” and this motto is reflected throughout her collections, which are made with the timeless elegance that is the signature of the Jackie Rogers brand. jackierogers.com

KLARA BEAUTY LAB By Melissa Kassis
What started you in the skincare world? ’ve always had an interest in the skincare and beauty industry. I actually owned a spa in Poland before moving to the states. I’ve worked in the best spa’s in New York to garner my craft and have never stopped expanding my knowledge with continuing education. My dream to open my own spa in New York was my constant driving force. And today I am living proof that dreams, mixed with hard work, determination and raccoon eyes from lack of sleep, really do come true.
I
You are extremely passionate about the skin. Is this what sets you apart from others? Of course my passion for skincare is at the forefront of what sets me apart from others but the bond I create with my clients is what keeps them coming back. I love my clients and my goal is always to create a sense of safety in the treatment room that allows them to open up. I am not only their skin expert, but their confidant. They get to unload their day to day trials and tribulations and leave with fabulous looking skin. Who doesn’t want that? I try to create the perfect scenario, so that means reading the client. I provide a shoulder when they need one or a place of tranquility when they just want peace and quiet. Either way, their skin always look great. What can your clients expect when visiting your spa? Nothing but the absolute best. From a welcoming glass of champagne to 5 star customer service,
32 | resident.com
I give my clients the experience that I would expect when visiting a high-end spa. Once the champagne has played its part in helping melt away some of that NYC stress, they get to luxuriate in completely customized treatments. When the pampering is over, they float home with samples, recommendations, regimens and, most importantly, fabulous skin. What are some of the new technologies that you are excited about? There are several that are at the top of my list but I am currently obsessed with the Fibroblast treatment and it’s really growing in demand. It is a revolutionary and remarkable technique that gives you surgical results without having to go under the knife. You can actually immediately see the shrinking of sagging skin. I mean I don’t think you could ask for more. You have lots of equipment in your facial room, are you finding it a must to keep up with the latest technology? Yes! Because of my obsession and passion for skincare, I am constantly on top of the newest trends and transformations in the industry. I attend shows and conventions and am happily a guinea pig to ensure these innovations actually work. It’s hard work, but somebody has to do it. And if I see something works and I stand behind it 100%, then I will add it to my menu of services so my clients always have access to the best of the best. How do you think the industry changed throughout the years since you started?
As an esthetician, there is nothing more exciting than seeing the revolutionary and innovative treatments that are being introduced to the market. Whether its new equipment or new ingredients, I cannot begin to tell you how thrilling it is to see the changes going on in the industry. Things that weren’t possible 15 years ago are a standard today. I cannot wait to see what we will have access to in the next 15 years. Maybe a magic wand, youth elixir? But, I must say that nothing can replace the human relationship. And so, I hope that in the future the industry continues to cater to a one on one connection that just cannot be substituted by a chamber or another kind of technology that would eliminate the attention and expertise one would receive from a skincare professional.
Beauty & Wellness
What is your go to recommendation for first time clients? My initial interaction with a client will always be a consultation. I get to know them and understand what it is that they are seeking from their experience. All of my treatments are customized so each client receives a very individualized service. Although my recommendations will always be different, my goal will never change – having my clients float out of the treatment room with their glowing, gorgeous skin. What is your favorite skincare brand? Being in the industry for over 15 years, I’ve literally tried countless product lines. I found the most effective line on the market to be Skinceuticals, who I ultimately partnered with. They are a results driven skincare brand that do continuous
research and testing for safety and efficacy to ensure they are able to provide advanced skincare that is backed by science. Because of this, I feel incredibly confident recommending the products and using them in my treatments. And of course, I use them myself. What is your most popular treatment that you would say is a must have? Facials are the most booked treatments and are the most well known in the skincare industry. I highly recommend everyone incorporate facials into their skincare regimens. Lash lifts are becoming more and more popular and are a very close second. My clients love having their lashes look amazing as soon as they wake up. Even after a long night they get to wake up looking bright eyed and bushy tailed.
Is it really possible to be proactive in preventing or slowing down the aging of skin? Absolutely. Having an anti-aging mindset sometimes has a negative connotation to it and is perceived as being vain. But it’s clearly in demand because of all the anti-aging products that are out there today. Some work and some don’t. Believe me, I’ve tried them all... When clients see me for a consultation, I help them decide what they can incorporate into their lives so they can be proactive or even erase some of those pesky signs of aging.

THE BLING OF SPRING Pantone Inspired Jewelry By Josh Estrin
F
orty years ago, Lawrence Herbert created a code-based system for designers to match colors and since then Pantone has become a world-famous authority on color with designers turning to the company’s annual Fashion Color Chart for inspiration.
While one might not want to be covered from head to toe in Cherry Tomato, Lime Punch, or Little Boy Blue, there is nothing like a splash of color to create a signature look. Pantone’s chart for 2018 includes 12-multifaceted and unexpected shades that are being embraced by not only the fashion world but by everyone from the bold to the beautiful and all points in between. The 2018 Pantone Color of the Year goes to Ultra Violet, a deep, vibrant shade of purple with undertones of blue that is bold and beautiful. The violet shade is luxurious and elegant, offering an unexpectedly pop of modernity to jewelry and accessories. The vivid hue is just one of the radiant colors that can be incorporated into one’s wardrobe to create a sophisticated, inspiring, ultra-chic style. You do not have to go overboard to make a statement; there is veritable rainbow of Pantone-themed baubles that can add that “wow” factor to any look.

“
Helping people monetize their skills—from tutoring math to teaching yoga—it puts real cash in people’s pockets,” said the tech CEO of his latest app venture, Romio. “At the same time, it helps users find exactly what they need, at the touch of their smartphone screens.” Naturally poised and soft spoken, with dark good looks and a trimmed beard, Sansal, 46, looks the part of a New York tech mogul. His lilting accent, with its British inflections acquired at university in London, doesn’t hurt, either. Launched in March, Romio connects regular people with skills with other regular people who need those skills. Do you need a dog walker, or do you want to walk dogs yourself? Sansal is hoping his app is the tool you will use to connect. Categories currently include parenting, education, pets, home, and many others, from accounting to Pilates instruction.
writers, Sansal had the confidence of an entrepreneur from an early age, playing professional soccer at just 13 years old. Today, he gets his adrenaline going by attending SoulCycle classes, using the five languages in which he’s fluent, and launching Romio.
expert I have the privilege of onboarding providers whose services I have personally used and love. Romio takes the pressure off users looking for highly vetted service providers. In essence, we do your homework for you.”
Sansal gets equally excited about the promise of his new App – not just a product but a social movement that’s spreading globally by acting locally—helping users find the services they need or promote the services they provide—with qualified recommendations from trusted experts.
“Joining was a no brainer!,” cooed Jamie Hord, a fellow entrepreneur whose start-up, Horderly, has quickly established itself as the city’s fastest growing home and professional space organizer. “It’s the smartest App in this field. What I love about Romio is the trust factor. You don’t normally invite strangers into your home, and vice versa, so this eliminates that anxiety because we’re no longer strangers. My team and I worked with a lot of clients in their personal spaces so having that trust and confidence off that bat is essential. No one else offers that.”
Unlike other service-oriented platforms competing in this space, Romio has enlisted the most authoritative voices to support every category. They call them Experts (with a capital E!) and each is highly accredited in his or her own field with local and natural media
Other experts include celebrity hair stylist Christopher Marrero, yoga and fitness guru Kristin McGee and parenting specialists Lyss Stern, Cherie Corso and Beth Feldman, all who have years of experience connecting with moms about raising children.
Users also leave recommendations to guide each other to the best service providers.
“As soon as I understood what Romio was all about, I wanted to be part of the Romio story,” said Corso. “As a national parenting expert, I understand the importance of needing a good recommendation quickly. Romio can save time, money, and effort.”
“There are platforms now in several different areas, but reviews are anonymous—they can come from anywhere. It has become harder and harder to trust what you find online. We saw a real need to build a sense of community and help people connect with what they need in their own neighborhoods,” said Sansal. “We wanted to give people a way to earn by leveraging their skills. We get very excited about how platforms put money in people’s pockets by monetizing an idle car and driving skills, or an empty room that otherwise wouldn’t be used.” Sansal’s degree in business services from Britain’s University of Westminster jumpstarted his desire for creating viable, digital businesses. Before the recent release of Romio, he founded InvestmentPositions. com and OnTargetJobs.com—which generated $160 million in revenue. The common denominator in all his business endeavors? Helping people progress in their careers. “I strongly believe that people should do what they love,” Sansal said. “People would be happier and earn more, while companies would be more profitable, if this were solved. Romio gives people a platform to follow their passions and turn them into lucrative businesses.” Raised in Algeria by a family of scientists and
“The beauty of Romio is that we’ve done the vetting process for you,” says Barbara Fight, one of Romio’s Business Development Directors. “Users know they will find trusted providers without having to worry about quality.”
profiles. And they are the gateway – the only way -- service providers can only be added to the platform: they have to be recommended, which ensures higher quality services. Getting Experts to sign on wasn’t difficult, but did take a little bit of time, as Sansal’s team spent nearly a year finding and recruiting only the best. And did they! The App launched last month with 400 of New York’s most qualified professionals lending their expertise and, naturally, their own recommendations. “I’m proud to be a part of Romio’s unique platform of trusted providers,” said Dr. Lisa Lippman, New York’s premier house-call veterinarian. “As an
For Sansal, Romio is also a solution for people looking to expand their services in an economy that is increasingly going freelance. With the continuing rise of technologies like robotics, automation, and artificial intelligence, 38% of US jobs are going to disappear over the next 15 years, according to a Price Waterhouse Cooper study. Sansal is motivated by statistics like this one to provide a solution for people so that they can continue monetizing from and living out their passions. Romio was built to help people and the company continues to be loyal to that idea throughout the platforms development. “Tarik Sansal’s vision for building a mobile platform to accelerate digital commerce, anchored in trust, is incredibly timely and appealing in today’s environment,” said Chris Budden, Romio’s Chief

Brand Officer. “With powerful global investors backing the platform and a solid core team and partners, Romio will be a game-changing product.” Through Romio, Sansal is on a mission to solve waste, fake reviews, anonymity, and inequality in wealth. He strives to give every day individuals a fair chance in gaining prosperity on their own terms. It’s in part because of his passion for people and helping them achieve their dreams that Sansal created Romio and he did so with love being the driving force. “Romio is about the things that we love the most—our families, homes, pets,” said Sansal. “It’s designed to foster a sense of community and to ensure you can trust what you love the most with the services you need.” It’s much-buzzed about launch last month in New York proved there is a strong desire for this type of model. “New York City gives you a true advantage when it comes to starting a company, because you have an accelerated depth of opportunity around you,” said Sansal. “Neighborhoods are nestled into each other, which exposes you to a variety of people and experiences that gives you a great testing ground which has a direct impact on your business.” Sansal believes in launching a big company in New York City because of the SoLoMo (tech industry jargon that combines social, local, and mobile) space in New York that traditionally was only found in Silicon Valley. He is also inspired by more personal stories, like when he first came to the city and heard about Indochine, a FrenchVietnamese restaurant, and the bus boy from Vietnam who wound up buying the restaurant. “Since then, it’s become one of the greatest places in New York but maintains a relaxed vibe and humane atmosphere, which is in-line with what Romio is all about,” said Sansal. “It’s a platform that delivers high quality local services with a trusted, personal touch.” Romio launched in New York City with thousands of service providers already signed up, and will be expanding to cities throughout the United States in the coming year. As an active entrepreneur for over 19 years, Sansal is excited about the launch of Romio and the positive affects he knows it will have for its users and service providers. “Always have a deep reason to help people that’s far beyond financial gain,” said Sansal. “Only then can you really succeed.” Romio.com

SCARPETTA & THE SEVILLE
The already hot NoMad neighborhood just became hotter with LDV’s flagship concept restaurant Scarpetta, located in the new James Hotel NoMad. Named after the Italian expression, “fare la Scarpetta”, which translates to ‘savor a meal to the very last bite’ is exactly what patrons dining at Scarpetta will do. This new incarnation of Scarpetta is led by Executive Chef Jorge Espinoza who creates rich and bold flavors by amplifying the essence of seasonal ingredients. All of the signature classics that customers love including the notable Spaghetti Tomato & Basil, Yellowtail Crudo, Creamy Polenta, Short Rib Agnolotti and Roasted Branzino are served to perfection. Additionally, the crudi menu has special items such as Tuna “Susci” and Raw Yellowtail which are complemented by a special Crudo tasting. The Verdure section has a rotating mix of at least 6 different seasonal vegetable dishes, each with bold flavors, vibrant colors and a simplistic approach to preparation. The mastermind behind the interior design is Thomas Juul-Hansen. A mix of metal, exposed columns, rustic wood, leather and marble replicates the intimate feeling of a chic dining room. What makes it even better is their new cocktail lounge downstairs, The Seville, which personifies the neighborhood balance of high quality dining paired with decadent social indulges and has already captured the attention of bold faced A-listers and celebrities. 88 Madison Avenue Scarpettarestaurants.com

n a city that never sleeps, our appetites also never end. Here are some of our favorite spots to satisfy those food cravings whether it’s a rose fueled brunch, authentic Japanese, old school Italian, or comfort fare NYC has everything at your doorstep.
JAX BBQ
If you are looking for an authentic Southern style wood pit barbecue experience without having to leave Manhattan, dine at JAX BBQ in Hell’s Kitchen. Pitmaster/owner Nick Accardi was known for his acclaimed Italian eatery in the neighborhood, Tavola, but wanted to bring back the flair of Americana to the area. The interior matches the menu with a rockabilly Americana diner theme featuring exposed brick walls, black leather banquettes with red piping, vintage 1930’s bar stools, and antique gas station signs. Literally taking ‘cues’ from his stint in Vegas under BBQ legend Mike Mills, Accardi applied his technique of “slow and low” smoking and created custom rubs to achieve BBQ perfection. The menu touches has Southern specialties such as alligator fritters, crawfish hush puppies, and a variety of expertly smoked meats. Other specialties of the house include the Memphis style ribs seasoned with an 18 ingredient spice mixture that’s cooked for 8 hours, the 12 hour smoked Carolina pulled pork, or the crispy buttermilk fried chicken that’s juicy on the inside. Other crowd pleasers include a variety of mouthwatering burger creations that are loaded with flavor. Try the Jax Classic Burger, topped a house-infused truffle ketchup and caramelized onion, and the B-B-Q slab bacon burger with hand-cut slab bacon, Vermont cheddar and house bbq sauce. Even vegetarians can partake with the delicious “I Can’t Believe It’s Not Meat” burger made with an Impossible Foods vegetarian patty topped with a savory custom sauce. Save room for a decadent Southern dessert such as a real key lime (made with actual key limes), Mississippi mud, and chocolate pecan pie selection, in addition to banana ‘Nilla pudding. 496 9th Ave. NYC | 212.273.1168 | jaxbbqnyc.com
BORRACHITO (photo credit: FOH)
Taking the vibes of the 70s taco truck theme, Borrachito is a Mexican street food concept by Den Hospitality located in the back of the uber hip East Village lounge, The Garret East. Executive Chef Yuval Ochoa hails from Guadalajara, Mexico where he drew his inspiration from family recipes. The menu is simple with a variety of spicy and savory tacos along with a delicious chicken tortilla soup. The tacos are reasonably priced at $4.25 with handmade corn tortillas are made fresh to order and filled with delicious fillings. Try the signature tacos including PORK BOMB, carnitas, chicharron, and house pico de gallo (the pork is prepared 3 different ways: roasted pork belly, confit pork shoulder and deep fried pork skin); NY STEAK salsa borracha & grilled onions; BAJA FISH, fried seabass, grilled pineapple salsa; and the vegetarian option of BURRATA, tomatillo salsa, fresh corn. DENINO’S PIZZERIA & TAVERN GREENWICH VILLAGE
In 1937, Denino’s Tavern was opened in Staten Island by Sicilian immigrants and has remained in the family ever since reaching legendary status. Keeping it in the family, Carlo Denino, introduced pizza to the tavern in 1951 with his crisp thin crust pizza topped with light sauce that came to define the Staten Island style of pizza. It became such a hit, attracting politicians, celebrities, and locals, that officials later named the corner the pizzeria was on- Carlo Denino’s Way. To expand the family’s legacy, Joseph Castellano, a former employee for 27 years at the original location has partnered with Denino’s stepson Michael Burke to open the first Manhattan location in the heart of Greenwich Village. The signature dishes are of course the pizzas that achieve the perfect balance of a thin crispy crust loaded with flavor that doesn’t sag. The other key is the order of ingredient application: cheese first, followed by toppings, and then sauce last. This unique style ensures that the flavor of the sauce is not lost. Musttry signature pies straight from the original location include the 1951 (tomato sauce, mozzarella), M.O.R (meatball, onions, ricotta), Garbage (sausage, meatball, pepperoni, mushrooms, onions), and Clam (fresh garlic, parsley, olive oil, grated cheese, no sauce), which is purportedly the best in the city. Classic Italian-American dishes are also served such as the meatballs - a secret family recipe with fresh tomato sauce and a dollop of ricotta, and crispy rice balls (crisp outside, gooey inside with rice, grated cheese, ricotta and mozzarella). Other delicious entrees include Chicken Parmigiana, Veal Marsala, and Shrimp Arrabbiata. Tuesdays are pasta nights with $10 pastas to get your carb craving on. Try the mouthwatering Cacio e Pepe (imported pecorino, butter, cracked pepper) or Farfalle Crema (mushroom, peas, pancetta, light cream). Now you can enjoy some of the best flavors of Staten Island without leaving Manhattan.

THE BELVEDERE at The Peninsula Beverly Hills By Melissa Kassis
B
elvedere restaurant boasts striking interiors and a recently re-imagined menu. Building on a rich, 25-year history of exceptional cuisine, The Belvedere – under the direction of Executive Chef David Codney – features Mediterranean-inspired dishes with a focus on locally sourced ingredients and wild-caught seafood. A defining feature of the space is The Terrace: a stunning al fresco dining destination in the heart of Beverly Hills. Richly landscaped treillage frame the expansive space to showcase verdant greenery, French limestone fountains and a flickering outdoor fireplace. As Executive Chef at The Peninsula Beverly Hills, Chef Codney oversees all aspects of the hotel’s cuisine, including the contemporary Mediterranean-inspired fare at The Belvedere, the only AAA Five Diamond restaurant in Southern California every year since 1993, and the al fresco Roof Garden. Executive Chef Da-
vid Codney has developed a thoughtful menu that caters to the seasonality of regionally sourced ingredients. Working with responsible farmers and companies who raise animals and grow produce with respect to the environment and local economy, the menu focuses on unique, locally- and seasonally-sourced ingredients presented in a simplistic, approachable manner. Adjacent to The Living Room and The Belvedere restaurant, The Peninsula Beverly Hill’s Private Dining Room adds a luxurious and intimate dining experience for guests. Featuring pieces from The Belvedere’s breathtaking contemporary art collection, the space is the perfect setting for wedding and bridal showers, meetings and gourmet dinners. A private patio offers space for al fresco cocktails. Displayed along the perimeter of The Belvedere’s white linen walls, The Peninsula Beverly Hills recently debuted a collection of privately cu-
rated art within the newly remodeled restaurant. The restaurant’s bright and spacious interior now serves as the perfect backdrop for 11 breathtaking works by acclaimed international artists such as Yayoi Kusama, Sean Scully and
Robert Indiana, as well a striking Fabienne Verdier piece commissioned specifically for the restaurant. I had the pleasure of dining at the newly renovated Belvedere restaurant at the gorgeous Peninsula Hotel in Beverly Hills. This is where the Hollywood elite come to enjoy this all-day menu of Mediterranean dishes. From the moment, you walk into the restaurant, you are greeted with the warmest of welcomes and beautiful flower dÊcor and its true elegance without being stuffy. We were seated at a beautifully decorated round table that had a view looking out to a cozy patio with outdoor seating. The staff was amazingly attentive and especially our server James Hernandez, who made sure we were well taken care of and to ensure the most pleasurable experience possible. If you are not satisfied with something, they make sure to make it right. James was so knowledgeable about the menu and every detail mattered. We were then greeted by the Sous Chef Kelsi Armijo who was excited about the amazing menu that Chef David Codney had created with her and their team. We started with Sous Chefs Kelsi’s suggestions: Charred Caesar, Spanish Octopus, Grass-fed Lamb-Burger Meatballs and Salmon Flatbread. I ordered the Burrata and Beets, Beef Tartare, Hearth Pita with Hummus and Baba Ganoush. The flavors in the meatballs were aromatic with a hint of sweet from the raisins. The Charred Caesar had wonderful texture and by charring, truly opened up the flavors without being over powered by dressing. The Burrata melted in your mouth and was the highest quality with some citrus and beets which gave it a refreshingly flair. The Hearth Pita is homemade on premises with a hint of sourdough flavor served with the creamiest Hummus and Baba Ganoush which was extremely flavorful with the freshest herbs yet not overly seasoned. By the time dinner was served we could barely take another bite since we were surrounded by amazing appetizers. Sous Chef Kelsi recommended the Duck Confit Orecchiette which had tender pieces of duck with hints of escarole and sundried to-
mato. This was seasoned perfectly and the sundried tomato popped with flavor yet was not overpowering. The Seared Scallops dish was a table favorite! They melted in your mouth and a must try on the menu. The next dish was a winner and reminded me of a seafood paella- the Lobster Bouillabaisse served with ciabatta, Rouille, clams, mussels and shrimp. The flavors were in perfect harmony of each other. A hearty dish you cannot miss! I would have never guessed Ciabatta, but it worked. If you can leave room for dessert, and I suggest you do, a must have Sous Chef choice, the Faberge Egg. It is a must have just on presentation alone. It was so gorgeous we felt guilty cracking it open to taste. Once we did, it was a white and milk chocolate heaven. The next dessert was the Apple Strudel which looked
nothing like apple strudel. It was also a work of art and flavorful with a smooth textured of apple filling that looked like it was inside an eggroll shell. Flavors were subtle, yet the apple flavor stood out and the sour cream was a nice addition to the sweet. I have to say I have had the privilege of dining at many 5 star restaurants yet The Belvedere, by far, stands out. From the comfortable yet elegant dining area, to the top-notch team who made us feel as if we were royals, to the exceptional creativity and quality of the menu choices, it was an amazing dining experience. A MUST visit in Beverly Hills.

ven if it’s too cold to enjoy a Northeast spring, it is time to pack up and leave for paradise, or more precisely Puerto Vallarta, even if it is just for a few days. The hotel of choice is the Marriott Puerto Vallarta Resort & Spa. It is beautifully situated on a sandy strip between the Sierra Madre Mountains and Banderas Bay. With its infinity pool and water sports center, four full-service restaurants, the

brand new lobby bar and its very own tequila education program, there seems to be no shortage of things to do. The perfect welcome to the resort is to enjoy the sunset guacamole and signature margaritas at Las Casitas restaurant. It overlooks the beach and you are perfectly situated to enjoy the legendary and breathtaking sunsets over Banderas Bay. The restaurant has a great menu of fresh seafood and regional specialties. The lobster tacos and the Red Snapper are to die for! A great way to start your first morning is to visit Ohtli Spa, which is recognized as one of the best spas in Mexico. It’s also the largest and most beautiful spa in Puerto Vallarta. Arrive a little early to take
advantage of the Roman tubs, plunge pools, the different saunas and steam rooms. The Ohtli Spa introduces ancient healing traditions from the Huichol tribe fused with modern techniques to help achieve the perfect balance between body, mind and soul. Apart from a rich choice of massages and facials, you can also experience unexpected, transformative treatments such as the water-based Jantzu Rebirth Therapy or an Aztec Chocolate Body Wrap. After this unique experience you are in the right mindset for a healthy and traditional lunch, in other words, ceviche! At the brand new ceviche bar near the lobby you can watch Top Chefs prepare a variety of unique and incredibly tasty ceviches right in front of you. The rest of the afternoon is best spent in the beautiful infinity pool overlooking Banderas Bay. En-

other its as if you’ve entered completely different worlds, to the chef’s enticing gourmet dishes, this upscale restaurant offers a gastronomic journey that can hardly be topped anywhere else in the world. It’s another morning in paradise and now it’s time to set sail and explore the hidden cove of Las Caletas. This spectacular beach hideaway once used to be the private home of film director John Huston. This beautifully designed retreat is perfect for snorkeling, kayaking, or just relaxing in a hammock. There are a number of little beach bars and the waiters will come right up to your hammock and serve your drink of choice. Talk about a perfect day of relaxation! After a great lunch buffet in the lush outdoor jungle restaurant it is time to head back to the boat. The beautiful and entertaining boat ride along Banderas Bay takes you back to the resort in time for the legendary tequila tasting. Marriott Puerto Vallarta even grows its own blue agave on property in the cactus garden. It is one of only a few resorts in the world with a propriety brand of
joy an ice cold margarita at the swim up bar and think about your friends back home shoveling snow. After all of this relaxation it is time for a nice sunset walk on the Malecon, the beautiful esplanade along the waterfront in Puerto Vallarta. Amazing modern sculptures of renowned artists will keep you culturally entertained on this breathtaking sunset walk. Don’t forget to venture into the little side streets and see the beautiful traditional stores and small market places, with local people playing music and dancing. The perfect finish for this special trip into town is a fine dining experience. The best choice for this is of course Cafe Des Artistes. World renowned Chef Thierry Blouet created this visual and culinary masterpiece, serving indulging Mexican inspired French cuisine. From its modern and artistic decor, including the different areas of the restaurant designed so different from one an-
tequila, the Casa Magna. Another one of the unique specialties of this resort is the tequila education program. Authentic Mexican tequila, such as the Casa Magna, is made to be “sipped” in order to savor the flavor. This art form requires the proper training. For this reason the resort offers the expertise of Audrey Formisano, Tequilier. You can experience and learn about the varieties of Blanco, Reposado, Anejo and Extra Anejo first hand. Additionally, the resort offers more than 60 brands, with 180 different tequilas by the class. To perfectly top off the lesson in essential Mexican culture you have to experience the “Dine Around Mexico” six course tasting menu. This delicious geography lesson lets you sample dishes from a number of different states of Mexico. easy to own a slice of paradise. Private residences range from cozy one-bedroom cabanas and charming cottage villas to grand oceanfront estate homes. Originally opened in 2004 by visionary developer Peter de Savary, the property was sold to a Marriott affiliate in 2008 and rebranded as a RitzCarlton Destination Club. Then in 2011 David Southworth of Southworth Development visited and saw that the club was in need of some serious renovations. In December 2014 the property was acquired by Southworth Development and renovations immediately began to make The Abaco Club the premier private club community anywhere in the tropics; infusing more than $10 million to take this world-class favility to an even higher level. In the near future, plans also call for the launching of the club’s marina and boat slips, just a few minutes down the road in Little Harbour. The creation of an on-property market, expanded food and beverage offerings and up-
grading of the club’s spa and fitness facilities will soon follow.” The Abaco Club spa offers a wide range of signature therapeutic treatments, including their signature Royal Hibiscus Facial and Bahamian Rhythmic Therapy. The Club’s Fitness Center features state-of-the-art Life Fitness equipment as well as sunrise workout sessions on the beach and personal training sessions. The resort-style pool, located high on Ocean Point ridge overlooks Winding Bay and a popular place to host cocktail parties. The main attraction here is the golf course. Designed by British course architects Donald Steel and Tom Mackenzie, the picturesque Scottish-style tropical links course is set against the sea – with rugged rocks, sloping greens and lush flora throughout. The golf course at The Abaco Club has been consistently ranked as one of the top courses in the Caribbean and Mexico.” As for dining, Flippers Beach Bar, an open-air restaurant, welcomes you with made-to-order break-
fast and lunch. During your stay, be sure to experience their barbecue night on Wednesday, so you can mingle with other guests and club members, complete with dancing to “Rake ‘n Scrape” live music and a Bahamian performance. In the evenings, cocktails and dinner are served at The Cliff House overlooking Winding Bay. Local favorites include fresh lobster, blackened grouper and conch chowder. Private dining is also offered with a private chef available for a romantic dinner for two or a fun dinner party for 20 of your closest friends. While visiting, be sure to embark on a leisurely sail, or hop on the ferry to visit one of the numerous nearby cays surrounding the island or visit the famous beachside Pete’s Pub which is known for serving the best seafood on the island. AN ICONIC DESTINATION
THE BEVERLY HILTON By Melissa Kassis
F
rom the minute, you arrive at The Beverly Hilton, you can feel the history and iconic splendor this hotel has to offer. Nestled at the crossroads of Wilshire and Santa Monica Boulevards, the hotel combines the excitement and entertainment of Hollywood with the prestige of Beverly Hills. The 569-room hotel features 101 suites including nine private luxury suites within The Penthouse Collection. The hotel’s renowned International Ballroom plays host to glamorous annual events including the Golden Globe Awards Show, Oscar Nominee Luncheon, Pre-GRAMMYs Gala, and the Milken Institute’s Global Conference. The legendary Aqua Star Pool is Beverly Hills’ largest pool and is the setting for numerous recognizable photo shoots.
Circa 55 restaurant entices guests with locallysourced cuisine in a stylish setting overlooking the pool. The fashion-forward Bellezza Salon is a full service hair and makeup salon and features miniature Swarovski crystal chandeliers with a team that makes you sparkle. The Beverly Hilton opened in 1955 by distinguished hotelier Conrad Hilton. Owned by Merv Griffin from 1987 to 2003, Beny Alagem and Oasis West Realty LLC purchased the 569room hotel in 2003 and immediately embarked on a spectacular $80 million renovation, which was completed in 2008. Since then, an additional $19 million in refresh updates have been made. Without taking away the history, the renovation
has freshened up the hotel without taking away all the history we love. Now for some Hollywood history: Esther Williams, film star and swimmer extraordinaire officially inaugurated The Beverly Hilton’s Aqua Star Pool (the largest in Beverly Hills) by swimming through white gardenias with three of her swim students. The hotel’s ground-floor nightclub, the Bali Room (now the International Ballroom), was so versatile that its beautiful jeweled stage and dance floor could be converted to an ice skating rink when the occasion called for it. July 10, 1960 marked the Democratic National Convention Closing Ceremonies; Presidential
nominee John F. Kennedy held a gala fundraiser at The Beverly Hilton where his pal Frank Sinatra rounded up a host of celebrities including Milton Berle, Janet Leigh, Tony Curtis, Judy Garland, Mort Sahl and the entire ‘Jack Pack’ to mingle with the crowd of 2,800 supporters. By the time Judy Garland began her second number, the crowd had filled two separate ballrooms to capacity.
– a symbol of space and freedom. Originally mounted over the grand staircase in the main lobby, this symbol was personified by a magnificent sculptured Starburst weighing 500 pounds and stretching to 15 feet, created by famed artist Bernard Rosenthal. Today, a portion of the original sculpture remains on display in The Oasis Courtyard.
In October of 1988, the Cary Grant family chose The Beverly Hilton – one of the actor’s favorite hangouts – to host a one-time-only tribute to Cary Grant. Hollywood insiders, Monaco royalty and dozens of legendary entertainers (including Frank Sinatra, Liza Minnelli and Burt Lancaster) came out to celebrate their personal connections to both Cary Grant and Princess Grace (Grace Kelly).
There is no other hotel in Los Angeles, and few others in the world, that could host the Golden Globes with the same ease, style and glamour. The hotel’s vast size and upscale event space not only allows over 1,300 guests to gather in the International Ballroom for the live telecast, five entertainment companies also throw large viewing and after parties simultaneously in areas throughout The Beverly Hilton’s nearly 9-acre property.
Along with First Lady Maria Shriver and a small group of 60 friends, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger celebrated his 58th birthday in July of 2005 with a California-shaped cake specially designed by The Beverly Hilton’s executive pastry chef. The icon of The Beverly Hilton is a starburst
In spring 2017, the hotel premiered a stunning new garden collection designed to emphasize a seamless indoor/outdoor experience within a lushly manicured, city-center oasis. The Gardens collection is comprised of three distinctive settings: the alfresco Wilshire Garden with sprawling
lawns and striking waterfall features; the Secret Garden featuring cozy nooks, chic seating and lush living walls; and the picturesque California Terrace, offering a harmonious transition from indoors to outdoors with a retractable wall of windows, leading an elegant connection to the grand Beverly Hills Ballroom. These new gardens create a unique urban oasis that enhances the overall experience. During my stay, there was an incredibly decorated wedding ceremony going on in this new outdoor space. It was absolutely fantastic with an elevated isle that the wedding party literally danced down. The sound system was amazing and the garden was beautifully lite for an early evening affair. The living wall was stunning and added a sense of modern flair. I truly enjoyed my stay at The Beverly Hilton. Whether siting poolside having a relaxing breakfast, attending one of many special events, or walking to Rodeo Drive and its fabulous array of shopping, this truly iconic hotel will make you feel like you are a part of Hollywood. A must stay when visiting LA! 310.274.7777 | beverlyhilton.com

stay at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel is a step back in time to the Golden Era of Hollywood. Situated in the heart of the West coast’s version of Times Square, a walk out the door puts you on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and a stones-throw from the TCL Chinese Theatre. The hotel offers accommodations for virtually any traveler. The Tower, built in 1927, captures the old-school glow of Hollywood with a modern touch. Even with a recent $30 million renovation, the hotel’s lobby has kept its original tile floors,

ceiling and glass chandelier, allowing its historic ambiance to welcome guests from their first step inside. Its selection of rooms include, Studio Double, Studio Queen, Studio King, superiors and even suites. For the ultimate movie star experience, check out the Gable and Lombard Penthouse, a three-level suite with rooftop access to a 360-degree view of Hollywood. If you are looking for a more relaxing experience away from the noise and flash, The Cabanas offer a modern west coast feel with an unmistakable Golden Age flare. Perfect for an upscale bach-
elor party or a scene from Mad Men, become immersed in the natural oak and charcoal hardwood floors, immense mirrors and quiet elegance. This location is also perfect for families looking for a tropical getaway with easy access to the pool. Rooms are available poolside, suite, balcony and superior. With eight bars, restaurants and lounges, you may not need to leave the hotel. Each venue offers its own unique style and atmosphere, ranging from classic American burgers and milkshakes to upscale cocktails. The Tropicana Café is the ulti-
mate brunch spot, with poolside food and drinks and a 1960’s aura. The Spare Room provides the ambiance of a candle-lit speakeasy during Prohibition and even features a two-lane bowling alley. The historical significance of the Roosevelt is also undeniable. The first Academy Awards took place in the hotels Blossom Ballroom. Former residents of the hotel include Marilyn Monroe, Shirley Temple and Clark Gable. For any lover
of old-time Hollywood, the Roosevelt Hotel is the ultimate tinsel-town experience. I had the pleasure of staying at the Hollywood Roosevelt and have to say it was a walk down Hollywood memory lane. As you walk in the front entrance, you can see the Hollywood Walk of Fame which makes you feel in the heart of it all. The team was accommodating and Adam, the Manager on site could not be more attentive to
the guests and their needs. I took a tour of the property and loved how they kept the integrity of this iconic building with some modern improvements. When visiting the pool area we had the privilege of seeing the Marilyn Monroe Suite that she lived in for over 2 years and found out that one of the first commercials she was in was filmed at the Roosevelt Pool. Right next to the pool there is an outdoor garden area that can be rented out for small gatherings with lush greens and a feel of old meets new Hollywood. One of the restaurants on premises, 25 Degrees, had a pub like feel with red designed wallpaper and chandeliers above. The food quality was top notch with a gorgeous presentation. I truly loved the location which was in walking distance to TCL Chinese Theatre, Madame Tussauds, the Hollywood Walk of Fame and Dolby Theater. If you want to get out at night, the Sunset Strip is an Uber ride or short walk away. From The Viper Room to Whiskey A Go Go these venues have hosted rock ‘n’ roll’s most important bands from the Doors, Led Zepplin, Janis Joplin to today’s up and coming new artists- these are ‘must sees’ in the neighborhood.

emember Hayley Mills, the childhood star of Disney films, “Polyanna,” for which she won an Academy Award, and “Parent Trap”)? While she has not been much of a presence on-screen in recent decades, she is still going strong onstage, as she demonstrates in Isobel Mahon’s “Party Face” at City Center Stage 2.
Meaney); her neighbor Chloe (Allison Jean White), a man-eater invited by Mollie’s status worshipping mother; Bernie, an obsessive/ compulsive fellow patient from her psych ward (Klea Blackhurst); and Mollie’s mother, Carmel (Ms. Mills), a materialistic suburbanite who consistently insults her daughter with sweet jibes.
“Party Face,” set in Dublin, is a comedy with serious undertones. The setup is Mollie Mae (Gina Costigan), is home from the psychiatric unit after suffering a nervous breakdown in a supermarket and attempting suicide. Contributing to her gloom is the abandonment by her husband (who doesn’t appear in the play). She decides to throw a party to celebrate her release from the hospital as well as the remodeling of her kitchen.
Carmel is the type of mother who believes that “every knock is a boost.” For example, on entering her daughter’s home, she notices the “lovely flowers,” but can’t resist commenting, “Course in my day you never saw a lily outside of a funeral parlor, but sure, that’s progress.” Carmel desperately wants to hide Mollie Mae’s recent troubled history.
Does that sound very believable? The guests are Mollie’s sister, Maeve (Brenda

Lara De Bruijn’s costumes perfectly suit each of the characters and Jeff Ridenour’s tasteful set (a kitchen and living room) is worth celebrating. Mahon knows how to write a funny line and Bearse (who directed many episodes of “Married …With Children”) knows how to deliver it. Where they both succeed less well is in the more serious undertones. The play may not need a man, but it does need to dig deeper into its characters’ psyches, especially Mollie Mae’s. “Party Face” has been a hit in Ireland under the title, “Boom?” Here, it comes off as a slick sitcom, which is fine if that is all you are seeking. Also, Hayley Mills, who happens to look great, is always worth seeing. The play is running until April 8th at City Center Stage 2 (131 West 55th Street; 212-581-1212). Tickets start at $39. Amanda Bearse joins the cast for the last week only: April 2-8!

THE TALENTED MR. CRUDUP A review of David Cale’s play, Harry Clarke By Rory Winston
“
I believe that imagination is the passport we create to take us into the real world,” proffers the conman and self-proclaimed son of Sidney Poitier, Paul Poitier, in John Guare’s Six Degrees of Separation - a play that questions the premise of identity as much as it does the values of the effete upper class who give credence to pedigree. Watching Guare’s play, one sympathizes with Paul’s need to reinvent himself so that he can join an elite circle. One even senses that the well-rehearsed interloper does more to earn the sought-for lifestyle than the phonies who inherited their status. But while Guare may have intellectually flirted with the idea that a man with a false identity can be more genuine than the crowd he’s infiltrating, when it came to confronting David Hampton – the real person his play is based on – the playwright took a less philosophical view and, instead, applied for a restraining order. Were David Cale to meet the charismatic namesake of his play Harry Clarke, it’s more than likely he’d have done the same. Directed by Leigh Silverman of Violet renowned (the 1997 musical by Jeanine Tesori and Brian Crowley), Harry Clarke is a one-man thriller that gives ample room for its multifaceted powerhouse star, Billy Crudup. Trapped in the nondescript Midwestern town of South Bend, Indiana, we meet Philip years prior to his transformation into Harry of the title. Philip Brugglestein is an eight-year-old who’s testing out a British accent that jumps between a posh queen’s English and cockney patois. What first seems like endearing foolery soon betrays desperation. Like the character Dave in Steve Tesich’s classic screenplay Breaking Away – a bicycle-racing youth in Indiana who pretends to be Italian in order to escape the monotony of his life – Philip longs to be elsewhere. Like Dave’s dad who doesn’t know what to make of his son’s ‘Itey (Italian) talk,’ Phil’s dad doesn’t get his son’s ‘Britty Brit.’ Sadly, similarities end here since Philip’s dad, Jack, is a caustic and oppressive bully. Assuming his father’s voice, Philip introduces us to Jack – a man who threatens Philip with electro-shock therapy if he won’t stop speaking with a British dialect.
up suffering as the son of immigrant Jews. Likewise, Philip felt he could be his true self as Harry. It’s not uncommon for artists to concoct a lie in the service of a greater truth – to express an emotional reality in the guise of an alien character that’s unencumbered by the minutiae of their own history.
Our story resumes years later with the death of Philip’s parents and the simultaneous death of Philip as we know him. Philip has been reborn as Harry Clarke, the dapper and charismatic world traveler who hails from London and has moved to Manhattan after having abandoned his job as tour manager, personal assistant and smooth operator par excellence for Sade. Well, at least this is the story he tells Mark Schmidt, the well-to-do WASP from Long Island who does his and his family’s utmost to ensure that Harry continues to live in the style he was never accustomed to living (sic). As Mark and his gullible family are dragged to the depths of Harry’s fantasy, the mood shifts from comedy to drama to absurd tragedy in the course of an act. Crudup gives us a virtuoso performance, depicting Harry and his entire cast of victims step by horrific step. Playwright David Cale teeters on the edge of fantasy and reality. His play, Harry Clarke, can be read as the type of whimsical but dark-edged fantasy in which all those with thwarted ambitions indulge. When Philip as Harry Clarke, says, “I felt liberated. Special. Like I was finally being myself,” he is voicing what Al Jolson must have felt when he first put on black-face. He was free to express his inner most feelings in a palatable form. Pretending to be an African American, Jolson could vent all his pent
Doesn’t every playwright pretend to be other people precisely when writing a play closest to their hearts? And how many writers don’t feel that they have, on some level, conned the world into believing they have deep insights while still harboring doubts themselves? And still it’s very different to fabricate characters within the realm of one’s own creation than to involve nonconsenting strangers in your lie. Meeting a real David Hampton or Alan Conway (the man who pretended to be Stanley Kubrick and was depicted in the film Color me Kubrick) is very different than imagining oneself into Kubrick’s head and writing a play about him. Likewise, witnessing the talents of a Talented Mr. Ripley in person is a far cry from having been friends with Patricia Highsmith while she put herself in Ripley’s place to writer her book. David Cale, like the character Philip Brugglestein invented, did come from the UK. After coming to New York, he performed a one-man show about a boy who was busy listening to Judy Garland records while his father killed his mother. Later the same boy becomes a prostitute before raising enough money to fly to New York. On the plane ride over, he meets his future self. Which part had to do with Cale’s own life? Aside from being born in London and coming to New York, absolutely nothing. That doesn’t mean the rest didn’t have emotional reality. David Cale is Harry Clarke as much and as little as John Guare is David Hampton. In fantasy, they may be similar. But in deeds, there is a world of difference between life and art. As the play Harry Clarke came to a close, I realized we all have our own fantasies – childish dreams that must forever remain safely tucked away in our own imaginations.

When the work day wraps up, Pat and LiLi like to head out to the Manor’s western lawn, where Pat takes photos of the often magnificent sunsets over Fort Pond Ray, while LiLi chases birds and bunnies off the grounds, and takes long walks on the ocean beaches, although she prefers not to get her paws wet. As they drive around the Hamptons, LiLi warns of pedestrians in the crosswalks and deer up ahead. She enjoys accompanying Pat on errands,(to outdoor events) which include picking up gifts and prizes for special events. Meeting and greeting old and new clients.
