ABOUT THE T218 SOUND SYNTHESIS MODULE This module is designed to help students understand and experiment with progressive sound generation techniques that require the development of unique compositional strategies. Sound synthesis techniques covered include subtractive synthesis, FM synthesis, sampling and granular synthesis. The investigation of tailored performance interfaces, advanced sequencing, and algorithmic scoring techniques will guide students in fully utilising these synthesis techniques in the creation of original works.

TEO RUI HSIEN BRIAN

TURN IT UP! With a passion in music and sound, Brian describes himself as someone who is adaptable, and an individual who enjoys changing environments and solving challenging problems.

WHAT'S PBL? RP offers a holistic educational experience through various innovative teaching approaches, leveraging the fundamentals of Problem-based Learning (PBL). Guided by trained lecturers, students work in teams to solve problems and present viable solutions to the class. With class sizes kept small, RP lecturers guide you to solve problems, overcome challenges, and enable you to experience working in a team. Such PBL sessions provide immense value as you would be well-prepared to take on the real working world.

This is perhaps why he thoroughly enjoys the PBL system in RP too! “What I enjoy most about the PBL system is how we get the chance to figure things out on our own instead of being spoon-fed the answers. As we are given a fixed amount of time to solve the problem of the day, we learn how to manage our time and resources.” The Year 2 student is also the President of String Ensemble IG and he shares that being an RP student has wonderful perks, “One of the best things about being an RP student is getting the chance to be a part of events such as IGNITE Music Festival!” When asked about how the state-of-the-art facilities have enhanced his learning, Brian says, “The facilities in STA have added value to my learning through the available hardware and software that I probably would have never heard of on my own. They also provide a wide range of applications and hardware that is relevant to the industry.”

LEARNING JOURNEYS FOR SECON DARY SCHOOL STUDENTS

Led by RP lecturers or our own stud ent facilitators, the hands-on activities in these worksho ps held at RP will give secondary school students a taste of RP's unique learning environment. Students will also get to find out more about our exciting diploma programmes and their related industries. To find out more, visit www.rp.edu.sg/learning_jo urneys.aspx

HEY, MR DJ! Want to know a cool fact? Sam is on Spotify with renowned Electronic Dance Music producer and DJ, Aldrin! Here’s how it happened. “Back in 2004, I was playing around with music software and uploaded several audio works online. I also sent a few “demos” to several local DJs and it caught Zouk Club DJ Aldrin’s attention at that time. We started collaborating shortly after, and our first release was signed to a major UK label, Renaissance Recordings,” shares Sam. Prior to joining RP as a full-time staff in 2010, Sam was a freelance location sound crew, and an active member in audio post production and sound design projects for seven years. According to him, the best thing about teaching in STA is the rigorous teaching framework, which is supported by industry standard facilities and equipment. “I feel that PBL can be a useful method to discover and share new knowledge. The interaction in class makes the learning environment safe as well as dynamic. Potential students should make RP their choice because this is where you will discover, transform, and achieve!”

SPRINTER

When Singapore's recently crowned sprint queen, Veronica Shanti Pereira, wanted to take sports more seriously as a child, her parents initially balked at the idea. Fast forward to 2015, and Shanti has become the first female sprinter to bag a gold medal at the SEA Games since the legendary Glory Barnabas did in 1973. She also took home another bronze medal to boot. With all the success she's garnered thus far, what's next for Shanti? Well, the Year 3 student says that she hopes to achieve her goal of qualifying for the 200m in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

SINGING

I’m in the RP-Singapore Sports School Diploma in Sports and Leisure Management course. Thanks to this specially designed programme, athletes like myself can continue pursuing our passion in sports while studying for a diploma. This programme offers flexible education system which allows us to personalise our timetable so that we can have time to train, study, and finish all our assignments.

SENSATION

If you feel like you’ve seen Marcus somewhere, you’re right! The Year 2 student was one of the Top 16 in the local reality-competition series, The Final One. When asked to describe his time on the show, he says, “It felt as if my dream was right in front of me and I had gotten one step closer to reaching it. During the first few episodes, I had the chance to meet the contestants and made a few good friends along the way. I even had the privilege to sing in front of Ken Lim and Taufik Batisah, which until now still feels so surreal to me!”

HOW HAS YOUR TIME IN RP BEEN? My journey as an RP student has been a fulfilling one so far as I have been able to become a better person. I am a member of Replug IG, a CCA that is known for their acoustic performances. Through this, I’ve learnt so much about performance and music arrangement in particular, and that has made me more passionate in my singing, as I wish to inspire people with my voice. I would like to thank RP for continuously giving us the chance to chase our dreams.

THE SCHOLARSHIP ACE “If I had the choice to go through my RP journey all over again, I would not change a thing. I’ve met many amazing people, and one of them being my lecturer and mentor, Mr Thomas Lazzerine!” Scoring a scholarship is no easy feat, and Charlene outdid herself by being awarded with three scholarships. “These scholarships help me to support myself financially without having to work tirelessly and rely on my parents for an allowance. I am confident to say that I’ve discovered my potential, transformed myself, and achieved my goals in RP.”

HOW IS RP HELPING YOU ACHIEVE YOUR DREAM JOB? CHARLENE CHONG JUN LENG

Diploma in Hotel and Hospitality Management School of Hospitality Year 3

My career aspirations include being a Singapore Airlines air stewardess, hotelier, and brasserie owner. With these careers linked to the hospitality industry, I am certain that the practical skills combined with the theoretical knowledge I have learnt from my modules and lecturers would enable me to thrive! As an RP student, I’ve learnt how to turn over a queen-sized bed to prepare for the next guest in under six minutes flat and how to deal with messy situations with real paying guests at the school’s Oliva training kitchen and restaurant; all of which are applicable to real-world scenarios in the hospitality industry.

THE SOCIAL ENTREPRENEUR How many of us would put in so much of our time, effort, and support to take part in social projects? Celestine is one such individual who gladly gives all of those to give back to society. An active member in various projects outside the classroom, she has taken on the role of a leader for Social'ution, participated in the Caring Fleet Marketing Programme, and travelled to Myanmar for a service-learning project. “In Social’ution, I was given the opportunity to work together with external parties, such as social enterprises and voluntary welfare organisations. I also had the chance to visit elderly living in one-room flats to bring them basic necessities, and chat with them. Through this project, I have learned how to communicate with the elderly while gaining an insight into their needs.”

CELESTINE LOW SIN HWEE

WHY DO YOU ENJOY BEING A CEC STUDENT?

The best thing about being a Centre for Enterprise and Communication (CEC) student is the wide range of activities we get to participate in and the exciting overseas learning trips that the school organises for us. In the project Caring Fleet Marketing Programme, I got to work together with students from other diplomas under CEC to develop a marketing plan, which enabled me to make new friends and learn from them.

As the Vice-Captain of RP’s Aikido IG, Haziq shares that the best thing about the club is its enthusiastic members who are willing to learn this art of peace and harmony. “We regard our club members as our family, helping one another during and outside training. Aikido is not just a martial art, but a philosophy in itself expressed in martial arts movement.” On top of that, Haziq has also won the Republic Award for being an all-rounder. “I would like to thank RP and the staff who nominated me for recognising my effort in all the work that I’ve contributed and done in my studies and Aikido IG. I am glad to receive the award, and I will continue to strive hard in the future.”

When we asked Arvind to share with us the wonderful moments he has had in RP, he says, “Apart from the valuable knowledge I have acquired, I have made more memories, gained more experiences, and gathered new friends in these three years.” An eLEAP student with many achievements to be proud of, Arvind shares how the programme has given him an edge over the rest.

Describing her RP journey as life-changing, Rachel strongly believes that the biggest takeaway she has gotten from being a student here is that we can be who we want to be if we work towards it. A current Deputy Contracts Manager (Rail Group) with Land Transport Authority (LTA), Rachel is involved in the Downtown Line projects located in the east side of Singapore. “One of my many roles is to ensure that the final cost of the projects is to be within the approved budget and contractor provisions,” she adds. Working with LTA has been exciting for the School of Engineering graduate and she would not want it any other way. “I have been in LTA for more than four years and it has been an exciting journey working with the various people in the project team, such as the engineers, architects, contractors and more. We face different sets of issues and challenges every day, but at the end of the day, being able to resolve all these made my work life very satisfying and fulfilling.”

These lessons inspire me to work harder, as I know that whatever I am learning right now will certainly come in handy in the future,” says Angela. The first-year hotel and hospitality management student wishes to work in the hotel industry overseas in the future. “I love travelling and meeting different people from around the world, and I believe the hotel industry will give me the opportunity to do so. I chose RP’s PFP also because the RP education allows me to be very hands-on with my learning.” What’s more, Angela is also a member of Latin Dancesport IG. “Being the president of Latin Dancesport IG has changed my life a lot. It has shaped me into the person I am now, and the opportunities given to us by RP have been incredible!” “I made the right choice by joining RP’s PFP. It is fun and less stressful than if I had pursued my O-Levels,” expressed Jun Kiat. A part of RP’s PFP pioneer batch of students, Year 2 student vividly remembers how they were well taken care of by their lecturers and how well-planned the lessons were. “Some of the classes included English, Math, Science, Project Management, and Social Emotional Learning. We used our laptops on a daily basis to do the majority of our work, all in a cool air-conditioned environment.” All in all, the sonic arts student is sure that he has made the right choice in joining RP, and is excited to see what’s in store for him next! “I’ve learnt many new things, made many new friends, and am so excited with the current direction I am heading in with my diploma programme.”

They say that a good teacher is someone who goes above and beyond the call of duty to be there for their students, and RP lecturers are no exception. Besides imparting their skills and knowledge, our lecturers make it a point to nurture students as a mentor, guide, and friend so that they graduate with lifelong skills and values. “Now that I have graduated, I am really glad that our lecturers taught us how to fish, rather than simply providing us with the fish,” expresses Wang Yiwen, a 2014 graduate currently enrolled at NUS Business School.

YOU’VE GOT A FRIEND IN ME Li Yan’s RP journey started more than nine years ago when he first joined the institution to teach. Having worked as a software testing engineer for two years, before taking up a joint master’s degree offered by National University of Singapore and Technische Universiteit Eindhoven (TU/e), prior to joining RP as a full-time lecturer, there is no doubt that Li Yan has a wealth of experience and knowledge under his belt. A fan of RP's Problem-based Learning (PBL) teaching style, the energetic lecturer shares, “PBL is not simply a routine of learning and teaching activities, but an abstract concept that we apply in all aspects of learning and teaching.”

This is why his students, including Yiwen, thoroughly enjoyed his classes. “In my first year, Mr Li Yan was our lecturer for a core IT module. I liked the way he taught us because he always used vivid reallife examples to make it easier for us to understand otherwise abstract IT hardware topics.” On top of that, Li Yan is not just a great lecturer, but he's also an excellent friend! According to the School of Infocomm graduate, Li Yan has grown to become a great friend over the years due to the many projects they have organised together. “He was the one who brought me into the world of volunteering. BY YOUR SIDE “Ms Sujata has always been a supportive lecturer who never fails to give me encouragement and emotional support whenever I need it,” shares Nurul Asyirin Bte Rosman, a Year 3 student from the School of Sports, Health and Leisure. Prior to joining RP as a lecturer in the Diploma in Health Services Management, Sujata was a senior nurse manager in a restructured hospital. There, she managed patients’ geriatric problems, such as dementia, incontinence, and frequent falls. Furthermore, she also trained nurses to take up geriatric nursing. When asked why the career switch, the bubbly lecturer says, “I have always wanted to teach. I used to teach geriatric nursing and assessment in the education department in the hospital. Although nursing was my first love, I wanted to do something different and that’s when I chose to teach in RP.” Describing her teaching style as one that is studentcentred and independent, Sujata makes it a point to inject activities and fun sharing sessions into her lessons. “Ms Sujata loves to share with the class her experience

of being a nurse and always relates it back to our lesson to help us understand better,” says Nurul Asyirin. The Diploma in Health Services Management student is also thankful for all the care and concern shown by her lecturer. “I can say that Ms Sujata is always there for me whenever I need her help, and she never fails to motivate me to do well in my studies. She is always willing to help!” That is exactly what Sujata wants her students to remember her for. “My kindness, empathy, care and concern is what I want my students to never forget. They will remember that I took the time to listen, that I stopped to ask them how they really were, and remember the personal stories I told them, which would help them appreciate their lives and education.”

It has not been an easy journey for me but it has been worth it. In ITE, I put in my best effort to succeed in the course I was in so that I could join RP upon graduation. When I was exploring my education options, I was immediately attracted to RP because it is the only institution to offer students the Android Programming elective module, which I am very keen in.

HAS IT BEEN EASY ADAPTING TO THE RP LEARNING STYLE? It was not difficult at all for me to adapt to RP’s Problem-based Learning (PBL) method because it is something I used to practise back in ITE too. I enjoy the way lessons are conducted in RP because it gives me a chance to participate fully and share my opinions with everyone.

WHY SHOULD STUDENTS APPLY FOR THE RP FRESHMEN SCHOLARSHIP ? With the help of the scholarship, you would not need to worry about school fees and would be able to concentrate fully on your studies. Through the scholarship, I have gained more confidence in going further as RP has shown me that we are all given the same opportunities no matter where we come from.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE RP ? RP adopts the PBL method, which I find very interesting. Back in secondary school, I always asked myself, "Why am I learning all these?" and "How can I apply what I’ve learnt in school to real-life situations?" PBL is the answer to those questions. I chose RP because the institution equips me with the knowledge I need to succeed in the working world.

HOW HAS THE RP EXPERIENCE BEEN FOR YOU?

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO STUDY IN THE DIPLOMA IN MARINE SCIENCE AND AQUACULTURE (DMAC)? I have always been intrigued by the oceans and the creatures living in the submarine regions of our planet. Hence, I felt that joining DMAC would be the right choice for me as it would give me an opportunity to learn more about marine environments and creatures. On top of that, I also felt that this diploma would serve as a stepping stone for me to start my career in this field.

There is no doubt that RP goes the extra mile to take care of their students, and no achievement goes unrewarded. I was awarded with the RP Freshmen Scholarship because of my O-Level results. This was a great start for me even before I started my academic year!

Receiving the scholarship has enabled me to spend more time on my studies as I do not have to worry about working part-time to earn pocket money. It has also allowed me to pursue my interest for archery.

I aspire to be a marine biologist. I would like to study about orcas (killer whales) and contribute to conservation efforts. In this diploma, we have a wide range of volunteer options and internships awaiting us, giving us hands-on industry-relevant experience.
