Annual Fire and Ice Fest set for Sunday at Sweet Arrow Lake BY ERIC PEDDIGREE COPY EDITOR

emperatures might be below freezing Sunday but the atmosphere will be warm inside the clubhouse at Sweet Arrow Lake County Park, Pine Grove. The annual Fire and Ice Fest will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. The event features food and entertainment to chase away the winter blues. Admission is free, although some of the activities will have a small fee. The fire component of the event is hot dogs cooked over an open flame and a chili contest. Susan Long of Diakon Living and Learning After 50 said as of Tuesday, she had four contestants registered for the chili competition. For a $5 donation, she said people can try every chili and cast a vote for their favorite one. The competition will run until the chili is gone. “As long as there is chili left, that’s how long the competition lasts,” Long said. She said last year’s competition lasted about 1 1/2 hours. “We went through a lot of chili,” Long said. Cool treats highlight the ice portion of the fest. Homemade ice cream demonstrations will be conducted, with children trying their hand at mixing the dessert. 2

They think it’s easy to grab and crank but it’s not that easy,” said Bob Evanchalk, parks and recreation supervisor for Schuylkill County. In previous years, the event featured a miniature ice golf course. Evanchalk said that it will return if there is interest and if weather permits. The cold winter weather will provide activities at this year’s fest, as well. The lake is frozen due to the sub-freezing temperatures and people like to venture out onto the ice to fish or just walk around. “There should be decent ice cover and a lot of people walk on the ice for the first time,” Evanchalk said. “There are lots of things to do in the winter at Sweet Arrow.” For those who like to stay warm inside, two musical acts are scheduled to perform Sunday in the clubhouse. Matthew Dodd will perform songs and tell stories about bugs starting about 2:15 p.m., according to Long. Country music singer Jesse Wade will follow. According to the National

Hudgens best thing about ‘Gimme Shelter’ Vanessa Hudgens is running away from her G-rated, “High School Musical” past so quickly she might have Usain Bolt asking “What’s the hurry?” But the problem with speed is that you always don’t look where you’re going. That’s how, if you’re Hudgens, you’ll end up in steampunk dreck like Zack Snyder’s “Sucker Punch” and Harmony Korine’s deliriously enjoyable girls-gone-bad shindig, “Spring Breakers.” Now she lands in “Gimme Shelter,” where she still gets to play a wild child — this time a tattooed and pierced pregnant 16-year-old runaway with a violent prostitute mom — but it’s in the context of a more familyfriendly, afterschool specialstyle cautionary tale. As a vehicle for the young actress, “Gimme Shelter” works; she is by far the best thing about it. Based loosely on the work of Kathy Difiore, a New Jersey woman who opened her door to homeless pregnant teens and founded the Several Sources Shelter, the film offers little deviation from where a movie like this might be expected to go. Agnes, aka Apple (Hudgens), is a sullen, angry teenager who escapes from her psychotic mother (Rosario Dawson) and finds herself on the streets in search of her birth father (Brendan Fraser). He’s a successful Wall Street exec with a huge house, a couple of wellscrubbed kids, and a pinched, uptight wife (Stephanie Szostak) who’s not in the mood to be stepmother to a child from her husband’s past — especially one who is soon to be a mom herself. Apple is taken to a clinic to deal with her situation — although the word “abortion”

MOVIE REVIEWS is never uttered — but she has second thoughts about the procedure and runs away again. This time, she ends up crossing paths with a priest (James Earl Jones) and then Difiore (Ann Dowd, who was so wonderful in the 2012 film “Compliance”). Hudgens captures both the defiance and fear of a girl at this life crossroads. Her performance elevates what’s often a trite and heavy-handed script. There are a couple of noteworthy scenes, as when Apple and other residents of the shelter break into the office and read what’s in their files. It’s revealing and touching without being histrionic. Dawson, on the other hand, comes across like something out of a horror movie, a screaming banshee of a junkie straight out of central casting. Plus, the option that’s offered Apple at the end is not something that would be available to most in her position so it feels like a bit of a cheat, even if it did happen in real life. Wr i t e r / d i re c t o r Ro n Krauss clearly has good intentions. He spent a year at Difiore’s shelter doing research and originally had planned to make a documentary about Difiore and her mission. Then he changed his mind and decided to distill what he’d seen into a drama. That’s too bad. Seeing how Difiore actually works with and inspires these young women — and how her Catholicism shapes her outlook — might have been more involving than this fictionalized hard-luck story. But for Hudgens, she chose well this time. “Gimme Shelter,” a Roadside Attractions release, is

rated PG-13 for mature thematic material involving mistreatment, some drug content, violence, strong language — all concerning teens. Running time: 100 minutes. ★★★

‘Gloria’ In her youth, Gloria hit the discos and danced the Chilean nights away, grooving to the Andrea True Connection and Umberto Tozzi’s song that used her name. “Gloria,” a song later remade in America by Laura Branigan, is an ear bug. Try to get it out of your head after seeing “Gloria,” the movie about this divorcee who finds herself reliving her past in the over-50 dating scene of modern-day Chile. Gloria, played by Paulina

Garcia with a sort of fierce victimhood, still listens to the songs of her youth, still picks up men — now, it’s at senior dances, where music of her era is played. She’s pushing 60 and still doing the occasional Walk of Shame. She has lost some of her looks, but not her vivaciousness. Sebastian Lelio’s film is about starting over, about how 60 is the new 40 and about how a woman of a certain age keeps her optimism and her sense of self-worth when society (and cinema) has traditionally put such women out to pasture. “Are you always this happy?” Rodolfo (Sergio Hernandez) wants to know on meeting her. Maybe he has number. Or maybe that’s just an “alias” she’s

been living under. As Rodolfo, successful, 60something and plainly smitten, pursues her and in between the work days and beauty regimen, the wining and dining and youthful paintball battles, we start to understand the weight of sadness behind this sunny exterior. Some of that you can lay at the feet of Rodolfo. He is an enthusiastic lover, but so guarded about their relationship that Gloria turns suspicious. That gives the film a melodramatic edge. She has other priorities — a daughter about to move overseas with her Swedish beau, a weepy ex-husband. And Rodolfo is a reminder of everything about her past — drunken bar pickups, the

excitement of a new sexual partner, casual pot use, the awkwardness of “relationship” conversations - and the unbridged maturity gap between men and women. “Gloria” has a palpable loneliness about it, and Garcia makes us feel that and fear the emptiness that is staring Gloria in the face. Not a lot happens in this closely-observed character study, but few recent movies have dared to show this stage of life - the creeping solitude that memories of your disco past cannot fend off. “Gloria,” a Roadside Attractions release, is rated R for sexual content, some graphic nudity, drug use and language. Running time: 109 minutes. ★★★

I don’t think I’ll ever be ready for some football

Am I ready for some football? No. I am not. I know it’s as American as apple pie to love the sport, but I have never been able to fully grasp the concept. I remember when I was a kid, I would go to football games and I thought I was cool because I knew what a first down was. So, please, throughout this column, excuse my complete ignorance and inaccuracies regarding the sport. It’s not that I have anything against football. I mean, guys in just plain spandex are usually not my cup of tea (unless it’s the ’80s and they are in a hair band), but guys in spandex with all that equipment on being all rough and rugged just does something for a gal. They seem really manly and tough and I like that. You would think that would be enough to hold my attention, but, no. I just can’t get into football no matter what. And believe me, I tried. My whole family watches football and many a beau in my past has tried to teach me how the game works. It just won’t sink in. I’d have a better chance at learning quantum physics. I’ve tried though. I’ve tried for the sake of boyfriends to bond and get onboard with it

Workers shovel snow off the seats at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., following a snowstorm Wednesday in preparation for Super Bowl XLVIII. The game, which will be played between the Denver Broncos and the Seattle Seahawks on Feb. 2, will be the first NFL title game held outdoors in a city where it snows. someone is breaking some kind of rule, but I have no idea why. It’s like I just start understanding what in the world is going on, and then all of a sudden, there’s this flag and then the referee does some kind of air-traffic-control-like moves and speaks at a volume I thought was required to be a ref (It’s a microphone. Jenna, seriously, get it together. You were in the enrichment program, for Pete’s sake.) And don’t get me started on the clock. It’s like, oh, great, there are four minutes left, this game is almost over. Forty-five minutes later, the game is still going on. But then, at times, everyone is

just standing around and doing nothing and the clock is still ticking. How does that even make any kind of sense? Where I’m seated in the newsroom puts me right beside the television as well as the sports department, so, I’m constantly bombarded with images of football and football talk. Sunday night while the guys were watching the game, they were discussing plays and what-not and they honestly could have been speaking Swahili. The only thing I understood throughout my in-and-out participation of watching the game is that some guy really hurt his

knee and another guy scared a female reporter because he was kind of overly enthusiastic during his post-game interview. I do understand other sports, though. I played basketball when I was younger and cheered for basketball when I was even younger yet. A smart and sassy gal pal of mine, who actually gave me the idea for this column, coached cheerleading and said she always taught the girls the ins and outs of the game so they knew what they were cheering for. She has faith she would be able to educate me on the subject as Please see JENNA, Page 8

A double whammy for the house

Dear Mark: Thank you for informing the public in a recent column about the pitfalls of the 6:5 blackjack game. I am a dealer in a Nevada casino and I can tell you that most, if not all dealers, hate the game. We spend far too much time explaining to the player, “within limits,” what the rule change is all about. In addition, we, too get screwed on the payout. Please do not use my name. Retribution where I work can be swift. Anonymous As the rule in the column stated, a player’s blackjack is paid 6:5 rather than the usual 3:2. This one slight rule change shifts the house edge, with basic strategy, from 0.15

Books, charts, experts, all tell you to double down on an 11 against a dealer’s 10. Yet, far too many players panic and stand down figuring the dealer has a 10 in the hole for a pat 20. Here’s the beef, Patrick. First, you actually have a better chance of making a 20 or 21 than the dealer has of having a 20. What’s more, if you were to just hit your 11, you will win 56 percent of the time. Remember though, you are just betting one unit. If you were to double down on your 11, you will win 54 percent of

the time, however, Patrick, you are betting two units instead of one. Personally, I would prefer to win $20, 54 percent of the time over $10, 56 percent of the time. How about you?

well, but, although I’m confident in her abilities, I’m not so confident in mine. But Super Bowl Sunday is coming up and I feel a sense of relief because that means no more football talk and I’m guessing everyone will move on to baseball, which is something I get. My pap was the biggest Phillies fan in the whole world and win or lose, he always stuck by his team. Harry Kalas’ voice in the background on his little AM radio is something that made me feel all kinds of nostalgic. Nevertheless, on Feb. 2, when you all are watching the big game, I’ll be in Elmira, N.Y., in a hockey rink. Do I like hockey? Sure, those guys beat the crap out of each other on ice skates. But, it’s not for a hockey game, I’ll be attending and event called “Wine on Ice” with some lovely ladies, which sounds like a perfect opportunity to break a limb, but I believe they cover the floor. If not, I could be out for the season (Wasakoski, a News-Item editor, is a graduate of Von Lee School of Aesthetics and is certified as a professional makeup artist.)

love interest, an ex-wife and a high-priced prostitute. As if that wasn’t enough, he’s dealing with an offspring that appears to be following in his dad’s often twisted footsteps. “Rake” has plenty of dramatic moments, but it also gets Kinnear back to his comedy roots. “It’s tricky to try and find that comedic/drama balance. But, the Australian show succeeds very, very much in that. It really struck a nice chord between the drama and the comedy, which is what appealed to me — doing that mix. It’s certainly what I think I was most intrigued by,

Kinnear’s delighted to be working with strong actors such as Miranda Otto, John Ortiz, Necar Zadegan, Tara Summers, Bojana Novakovic, David Harbour and Ian Colletti. Kinnear could end up playing the role for years, if the show is successful and that’s something he’s OK with. He says he’s fallen in love with the roguish charms of his character. WE DELIVER
