eapin’ lizards! Annie is coming to Pottsville. The iconic tale of the little red-haired orphan and her hard-knock life will be told this weekend on the stage at Sovereign Majestic Theater. The Pottsville Gymnastic and Theatrical Center Inc. will present “Annie Kids” at 7 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday at the theater, 209 N. Centre St., Pottsville. Under the direction of Sandy Kost-Sterner, “Annie Kids” is the group’s first musical. They are ready to get on the stage and shine in both their own individual roles and as one fantastic cast,” Kost-Sterner said. Set in 1930s Depression-era New York City, Annie is determined to meet her parents, who left her at the orphanage run by the bitter Miss Hannigan. After attending a party at the home of billionaire Oliver “Daddy” Warbucks, Annie finds new adventures and more 2

The musical is based on the popular comic strip and features the songs “Tomorrow” and “It’s a HardKnock Life.” Maddie Swick, 10, of Orwigsburg, will play the charming orphan Annie. Although she said she occasionally gets nervous, Swick said playing in “Annie Kids” has been a fun experience. “I just like being on stage and meeting new friends,” Swick said. Kieffer Quandel, 14, of Hegins, who is portraying Daddy Warbucks, said he found it easy to connect with the open-hearted billionaire, calling the character his “alter ego.” “I think myself being the oldest it’s basically understandable,” Quandel said. Quandel has experience performing on stage but “Annie Kids” has been different for him as he is the oldest member of the cast. “It’s a really big change because I’m here with 10- and 5-year-olds and I’m the 14-year-old who stands out,” he said. The all-kid cast has 40 members, ranging in age from 5 to 14. The production is presented through arrangement with Music Theatre International, New York City. “Pottsville GTC is very proud to

‘Catching Fire’ bigger, better, broodier Anyone who felt that the workmanlike adaptation of the first “Hunger Games” missed the bull’s-eye, take heart. “Catching Fire” is the new “The Empire Strikes Back,” a smashing sci-fi sequel that takes its blockbuster franchise into deeper, smarter, more dramatically engaging territory. New director Francis Lawrence has a solid grasp of science fiction (as demonstrated in “Constantine” and “I Am Legend”) and romance (proven with “Water for Elephants”). The conflicts are clear, the characters fully fleshed, the lethal adventure urgent and the tender interludes poignant. Suzanne Collins’ bestsellers, set in a fascist North America after a civil war and the extinction of the middle class, are a potent sociopolitical allegory. In dystopian Panem (Latin for “bread,” a nod to the Roman Empire’s policy of distracting citizens with food and circuses) young warriors must kill each other to survive. The battles are packaged as gladiatorial reality shows designed to keep the populace disengaged and submissive. The spectacle is undeniably impressive. An attack against players on a tropical island by a troop of ferocious mandrills tops anything I’ve seen this year for sheer get-me-out-ofhere chills. Jennifer Lawrence plays Katniss Everdeen, a stoic rural teenager who entered the Games in the first film to save her younger sister from certain death in combat. The role showcases Lawrence’s uncanny ability to make a tiny, apprehensive furrow of the brow speak volumes, and to tackle bigger-than-life scenes without going over the top. Having survived the first round of reality-TV carnage, Katniss has become a nation-

MOVIE REVIEWS al celebrity. Katniss, a coal miner’s daughter, hates the pretense and glitz of stardom. She resists play-acting a manufactured faux-romance with her Games teammate/ pretend boyfriend Peeta (Josh Hutcherson). That reluctance adds tension and irony to the slow-burning attraction between the two survivors offstage. Her unprecedented popularity has made Katniss a political figure representing underclass hopes. Concerned that she could become the figurehead for an uprising, President Snow (silky, evil Donald Sutherland) orders his games designer to create a competition that will eliminate her and ruin her heroic reputation in the process. Plutarch Heavensbee (inscrutable, calculating Philip Seymour Hoffman) proposes “what we designers call a wrinkle,” an All-Star Game featuring the survivors of earlier combats. When the action moves to the arena, unexpected alliances and hidden agendas reveal a hedgemaze of new wrinkles. Working from a script by Simon Beaufoy (“Slumdog Millionaire”) and Michael Arndt (“Oblivion”), director Lawrence leavens this fundamentally serious movie with bleak, caustic satire. Stanley Tucci returns as soulless TV host Caesar Flickerman, whose awesomely stilted stage presence raises insincerity to high art. Elizabeth Banks wears ever more bizarre couture as Katniss and Peeta’s image consultant; one memorable outfit is composed of monarch butterflies. It takes skilled filmmaking to walk the line between ghastly realism and crankedup absurdity, and this movie has the creative vitality to

make both aspects of the story work. There’s a clarity and purpose to every shot. Stunning retro-futuristic set and costume designs draw a vivid line between the worlds of decadence and deprivation. In contrast to the overblown, artificial pomp of the capital city, the film’s real, melancholy beauty appears whenever Katniss returns to her hardscrabble home district. Katniss’ contempt for the Darwinian backstabbing of the entertainment/government cabal meshes nicely with Lawrence’s real-life anti-Hollywood pronouncements. On every level, this movie works. I was entertained by the first “Games” film. This one gripped me. “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire,” a Lionsgate

release, is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of violence and action, some frightening images, thematic elements, a suggestive situation and language. Running time: 146 minutes. ★★★★

“Delivery Man” Vince Vaughn’s carved out a successful career playing characters who aren’t the most productive members of society. And those characters are usually played for big laughs. He portrays the same kind of role in “Delivery Man,” a guy whose biggest talent is being a frequent sperm donor, but this time the laughs are more subdued and — dare it be said — sweet. Vaughn’s found a way to take a character who should be annoying and make him endearing.

David Wozniak (Vaughn), a less-than-competent meat delivery truck driver, finds out the donations he made to a fertility clinic 20 years ago under the fake name of Starbuck — has made him the father of 533 children. He discovers the news when 142 of his sons and daughters file a lawsuit to get him to reveal his identity. The prolific papa is advised by his friend and lawyer (Chris Pratt) to avoid any contact with the offspring because of all the legal ramifications. The film would have ended early had he not started to dig into the lives of a few of the names on the long list. “Delivery Man” works because Vaughn is so comfortable playing these kinds of characters. Because it’s

easy to believe that the delivery man could be a big-time loser, it’s easier to connect with the character as he takes this odd jour ney. There’s an everyman feel to the way Vaughn plays the role that — while the situation is outlandish — makes it easy to relate to the questions about family that serve as the heart of the movie. “Delivery Man” is a pleasant surprise. The story line about being the father to hundreds had all the earmarks of being an over-the-top comedy. Instead, this is one of the sweetest family movies released this year. “Delivery Man,” a DreamWorks release, is rated PG-13 for drug references, language, violence. Running time: 103 minutes. Grade: B

Beards are one thing — trends, another I think I’ve made it clear in the past: If there is one thing I love, it’s a man with facial hair. But there is a difference between donning facial hair and following trends. I’ve fallen prey to multiple trends in my life, so my judgement is also cast upon myself. No, I’ve never grown a beard. But it seems every few months, something else is “cool.” From pirates to mustaches to “Keep Calm and Carry On” prints and variations of the like. Trends spread like wildfire and, as fast as they ignite, they burn out and the world is on to something new. No harm done, right? Not unless you got a tattoo I MCCLATCHY NEWSPAPERS guess, but I still feel like folBarber Nick Steeves, left, gets ready to apply the sec- lowers follow trends and ond hot towel to Steve Carlin’s face as part of his leaders, and those who do not give a flying flip what beard trim.

I get annoyed when something I’m into becomes overly commercialized. Jenna But beards? Beards I cannot hate on, no matter how Wasakoski saturated they become. I equate facial hair with masculinity. much more conducive to aiding cancer research than skipping your daily shave for a month. Trends come and go and what was cool is suddenly deemed lame. My biggest concern is men who regularly choose to wear beards will dismiss them due to their overpopularity. Please don’t do that. I don’t even really know what my point is, but I choose to use this outlet to encourage men to continue to wear their desired facial hair with pride no matter what. Do not let it come and go with the trends, lest there be, at the very least, one very disappointed gal out there. Keep them growing, fellas. You all look great. Other entertainment can be found Dear Mark: I really enjoyed your column called “Vegas on the Cheap.” Yes, every place I gamble does offer other forms of entertainment besides losing money. I am curious as to what are your favorite places to go where they offer gambling, but not for the sake of gambling itself ? Alan R. As Johnny Cash rat-tattats towns, cities and states like Reno, Chicago, Fargo, Minnesota, Buffalo, Toronto, Winslow, Sarasota on his hit, “I’ve Been Everywhere,” I too have been everywhere, at least when it comes to casino destinations, including on that dusty Winnemucca road.

Yet, picking a select few wasn’t all that hard because luckily you allowed me to discount gambling. So here goes. Warning! My list is as subjective as it gets. rim of snow-clad mountain peaks that towered aloft full three thousand feet higher still! It was a vast oval, and one would have to use up 80 or 100 good miles in traveling around it. As it lay there with the shadows of the mountains brilliantly photographed upon its still surface I thought it must surely be the fairest picture the whole earth affords.” Roughing it. I worked my entire gaming career, met my wife, got married and my son was born there, and because I worked only swing or graveyard shift, I was able to ski 2,255 days on those “snowclad mountain peaks that towered aloft full 3,000 feet higher still.” This destina-

tion truly exemplifies every day a picnic, every night a party. Detroit: Devoutly loyal to my hometown, I include Detroit on my list. A favorite locale of mine, Ann Arbor, is a mere 50 minutes west of Detroit. And, being a connoisseur of Polish food, I can recommend my favorite Polish restaurant, the Polish Village Cafe, which sits within the heart of Hamtramck, a city within the city of Detroit. I’ve been known to drive hours just for their golabki (stuffed cabbage) and koperkiem zupe (dill pickle soup). Smacznego!
