A Message From Your Board President By Lois Lee, 2013 Board President
L
ast month I told you about the random survey of 100 people in Hansville. All of them said they believed the Greater Hansville Community Center was essential to our community and that reliable funding is necessary for the community center to function. In fact, most of the responses recommended using an Endowment Program and/or an Annual Giving approach. Many also thought that increasing membership and other fees could help. All of you who read the Log know that it gives you the heart and pulse of the community. Greater Hansville residents do not have to pay membership dues to receive the Log, but we need community support to cover its expenses. Did you know that only 300 of the 2000 people who receive the Log actually pay a membership fee? Or that only 16% of those surveyed make contributions to the center beyond membership fees? Did you know that the community donates over $6000 annually through the membership forms in the Log and the direct mail renewal letters, which the Center passes through to other community organizations? cont. on page 4

Include the Community Center in your will (a bequest) which will help secure our future Make sure your family knows you want to designate the Center for memorial contributions Donate stocks to avoid high capital gains taxes (ask your accountant about this) Donate a portion of your IRA or SEPA to avoid taxes on it Remember that the Center is a non-profit organization that gives you a tax deduction.

he August 14 meeting of the North Kitsap Puget Sound Anglers will be the Members -Only salmon barbecue. With our huge new charcoal grill, our expert chefs will be pumping out fish cooked to perfection with a variety of recipes. Members should remember to save fillets to donate to the cause. Non-members should consider joining. The $25 annual dues wouldn’t buy much of a salmon dinner anywhere else, and there are so many other reasons to join! We’ll have a mid-summer potluck down at the Eglon Beach on Sunday, August 4 at 1:00 pm. Please bring a potluck item to share, your own plates and silverware. Coffee and juice will be provided. Our casual Wednesday Beach Night continues though the month of August so try to make it down one week to visit by the campfire, roast a hotdog or two and catch up with neighbors. Be sure to bring your own picnic dinner. The fire is always going by 6 pm. Hope to see you soon!

HANSVILLE GREENWAY UPDATE What are the “Dog Days of Summer?” I remember hearing people say that term whenever the weather got hot. As a youngster I thought it related to high temperatures. According to Steve Pool our local weatherman in Seattle, the ancients in Southern Europe who observed ‘Sirius’ or the ‘Dog Star’ believed that on July 23rd when this star rose and set with the sun, it seemed to give off heat and added to the sun’s warmth making the days even hotter. The term refers to the twenty days before and after this alignment which is usually July 3rd through August 11th. In the southern hemisphere the dog days of summer occur in January and February which is in the middle of the astral summer. Have we been having this type of weather this year? I think so. On a nice sunny Saturday, July 13th to be exact, Karla Martin and Van Bergen took two Hansville avid hikers on a hike through the Greenway. It was an hour and half long and approximately three miles long. Karla explained the difference between hedge nettle and stinging nettles. Although the leaves on both plants look similar the exception is that the stinging nettle leaves are saw-toothed and the hedge nettle leaves are coarsely blunt toothed. The flower on the hedge nettle is an extension of the top stems with hairy tufts and is usually pink but could be white. The flowers on the stinging nettles are located at the base of the leaves and are white drooping clusters. Guess that our local rock reader board is back in business clearly stating with small rocks this message: I AM BACK! For you folks who have not been in the Greenway this reader board made of carefully placed rocks and moss have brought smiles to the stewards faces for a long while. The messages are changed from time to time and leaves us wondering “Who is this rock messenger?” The next meeting time is on August 1st at HCC about 7pm. Feel free to drop in to meet our hard working stewards and also to consider becoming a trail steward by getting more information. You may or may not have heard heavy machinery in the area off of Sterling Highlands in July. The clear cutting is expected to be over soon but in the meantime some of the animal population seems to have migrated towards the Greenway. During the weekend of the fourth of July I saw two deer in one visit which was unusual. But maybe they were just passing through. It was pretty impressive to my four year old grandson on his first trip to the Greenway to be able to see deer and not behind a fence, too. Did any of you try rock balancing that I wrote about last month?? I was just curious. Probably when you read this there will be new boardwalks completed over the muddy spots in the Chatham area east of thetoHansville Highway. Many thanks go to Al Whitworth for taking on this project so that hikers and walkers can walk over muddy spots this winter and from now on. Gratitudes also go out to the volunteers who worked along with Al. Please keep motorized vehicles off the trails, keep your pets safe by keeping the leash on them and help Puget Sound remain clean by picking after your pet. And remember: We welcome you to come visit the Greenway come rain or shine, ‘cause wherever you go, ‘tis beauty to behold.

2013 Coaster Games
ell well, it’s that time of year again when the Coasters come back to Hansville for the Annual Hansville Coaster Games. Saturday, August 24, is the big day when Benchmark Road morphs from a normal country lane to something more akin to the Indy brickyard. It’s when men, women, and children of all ages put on their helmets and gloves and challenge the Benchmark hill to see who can get to the bottom the quickest in their homemade contraptions. The event starts at 2:00 pm and the racing usually starts closer to 2:30 pm after everyone gets registered. The racing usually runs for about an hour or so. When the racing is over, we’ll all share a little cake, hand out trophies, and have some fun comparing notes and trading speed secrets. This year the Hansville Coaster Games supports the Greater Hansville Community Center’s Scholarship programs. So please buy lots of raffle tickets to help us raise lots of money for that important program. We recommend that you bring a blanket or folding chair to sit on, and don’t forget an umbrella or sun screen just in case we have a hot sunny day. And lastly a big, big round of applause for our four business sponsors who contribute big time to make the Coaster Games possible:

hat would happen if we doubled the number of annual dues paying members and donors matched their gifts to other organizations with a gift to the community center’s endowment fund? The total amount in five years would be $60,000! Add the $37,500 we already have received in cash and pledges for 2013 and the total would be $97,500!
Endowment funding is for the future of the community. It can be a legacy for the next generation including your children. Filling a future anticipated financial gap is not a short term crisis; it is a long term problem requiring a long term solution. So we need to actively commit to a long term solution with a plan. As you know, an endowment is a fund in which the principal is carefully invested and the revenue generated is saved for future financial needs. A very important part of our endowment is Planned Giving, in which a donor ‘wills’ part of their estate to the center. I believe that planned giving could bring the majority of funding (perhaps $300,000) to this solution. Including the Center in your will by leaving a percentage of your estate, donating your home or boat, leaving stocks or an IRA or making a memorial donation could get us to the desired goal and may not be as burdensome in the short term for the donor. Many people have asked for more information about endowments. Soon investment experts will give seminars to explain endowments and how you can give your community a legacy to your children, while avoiding high capital gains taxes. Volunteers at Buck Lake Native Plant Garden
L
ucille Ball is attributed with saying, “If you want something done, ask a busy person to do it. The more things you do, the more you can do.” The north Kitsap community must be full of busy people; we have quite a reputation for volunteerism! So often we enjoy the many projects that seem to appear locally. The Native Plant Garden at Buck Lake County Park is no exception. The garden has developed from an overgrown field into native plant “rooms” bisected by a walking path inviting a leisurely stroll. The Flotsam and Jetsam Garden Club provided seating for a quiet moment of reflection. It took a dedicated group of volunteers to provide the magic of the site. The work doesn’t end with the plant selection and ground preparation. The work doesn’t end with the planting and the mulching. Nor does it end with the weeding and the plant labeling. As the Native Plant Garden grows so does it’s need for maintenance and care. Volunteers continue to work their magic. The garden season ebbs and flows as the needs of the garden changes. There is a wide range of tasks to appeal to any interest, though we’ve found that each work party is really a workshop where everyone learns something new about using native plants in the landscape. If you have an hour or two in your busy schedule, please join us on any first or third Monday morning. A crew is at the garden from 9 am to noon. Dress for the weather; bring your favorite garden tools and be sure to bring a mug for a cup of coffee. BACKING UP YOUR DATA BY ART ELLISON ABE COMPUTER CONSULTANTS, LLC
I
n the past, we have spoken of backing up your data. This is part of a disaster recovery program that everyone should have. Sound too extreme? When it comes to your data it’s not. Perhaps all you do on your computer is read email and surf the web. Not too much data there, is there? Think again. If you have an email program that downloads mail from the server, wherever it is, then you stand to lose all those emails and your list of contacts (your address book). If you do any form of accounting on your computer, that’s data you wish to save. How about all those pictures? Many of us have pictures of our family and our vacations. Be kind of nice not to lose them, huh? Then there is correspondence, tax forms, etc. There are many programs that will copy data to a CD or a DVD or maybe even a flash drive (some call it a thumb drive). Windows will let you copy the files directly to this kind of media without a special program. Check around to see what is available for you to use. Another way to protect your data is to back it up to the cloud. This is called offsite backup. If something happens to your home, your data is safe. In a nutshell, you rent space on a company’s computer. Doesn’t matter where this computer is, as long as it’s not in your home. These companies will sell you space depending on your needs. You can generally start out with a small amount of space and buy more if you need it. You can even create an image of your system on one of those remote computers. This is a “picture” of the entire hard drive, operating system and all. If a hard drive crashes, all you have to do is restore the image to your new hard drive and you’re up and running.
