Industry players such as Thomas Cook or Tui have a high level of vertical integration, while online travel agencies (OTAs) commonly adopt an asset-light approach. Traditional tour operators are facing increasingly stiffer competition from OTAs, on all business fronts. As far as premium and corporate travel businesses are concerned, OTAs play a minor role, with Expedia being the exception. Mainstream travel companies such as Tui and Thomas Cook remain a significant challenge for OTAs, particularly given their brand strength and high level of vertical integration.
