Deutsch joins mayoral race; activist to run for council seat Continued from page 1 She is the first woman in Dunwoody’s 10year history to run for mayor. Deutsch has been outspoken on the Georgia Department of Transportation’s plans to build toll lanes along I-285 adjacent to the city’s Georgetown community. She has also spoken out against the DeKalb County School District’s handling of overcrowding at local schools. “My main priority is to ensure Dunwoody’s quality of life remains high and then to improve that,” she said. “That means we have to focus on the amenities we have in the city limits and we have to be concerned about negative impacts of projects that could do harm to our city.” Before being elected to the City Council, Deutsch served on the city’s Planning Commission and the Dunwoody Homeowners Association. She was vice-chair of the Citizens Planning Task Force for DeKalb County Schools. City Council races are nonpartisan, but the Democratic Party of Georgia unveiled a program in July to recruit candidates for city races, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Deutsch said she was not recruited by the state Democratic Party to run. She said she had planned to announce her bid for mayor in June, but decided to delay her announcement after Nall injured his shoulder and had to have surgery. “This is a nonpartisan race,” she said. “Paving, parks, planning – they are all nonpartisan. I’ve never met a pothole that had a partisan preference.” Long-time community activist Sec-

onder, known by many as “Bicycling Joe” for his community activism on pedestrian and cycling connectivity and safety, announced his bid July 26 for Deutsch’s seat on the council. This is his first bid for elected office. District 2 includes the central area of the city. The District 2, At Large seat is represented by someone living in that district who is elected citywide. “The city of Dunwoody has done a good job establishing and delivering basic municipal services. But being ‘good enough’ and being reactive to change is not a long-term strategy to ensure Dunwoody’s future,” Seconder said in a press release. “I am running for City Council to bring new leadership and vision to Dunwoody, to help ensure all our current and future residents have the quality of life, services and amenities they need and want,” he said. Seconder said he was not recruited by the state Democratic party and has been interested in running for City Council since 2015. Seconder, leader of the advocacy group Bike Walk Dunwoody, founded the Perimeter Progressives political group in 2017. That group was one of several regional political groups that rose in the wake of President Trump’s election. The group folded last year due to concerns of overlapping goals with other similar groups. In 2017, Seconder received the city’s Sustainability Hero Award for his bicycle and pedestrian advocacy. Seconder has lived in Dunwoody for
