REPAK UPDATE REPAK RECYCLING AWARDS SPECIAL EDITION The Repak Recycling Awards 2014 were announced at the Lyrath Hotel, Kilkenny on October 17th 2014. The awards were presented by Environment Minister Alan Kelly TD, Repak Chairman Tony Keohane, and Repak CEO, Seamus Clancy. The awards recognise those Repak members and waste recovery operators who have made significant contributions to Ireland’s recycling efforts. Thanks to them, Ireland is now second in the EU packaging recycling league table. The awards promote excellence in areas such as packaging prevention and sustainable design, waste packaging recovery and recycling, and co-operation with Repak and other stakeholders who are leading Ireland’s recycling drive. REPAK UPDATE - AWARDS EDITION REPAK MEMBER OF THE YEAR AWARD This is Repak’s top membership award. It goes to the member who has demonstrated excellence in waste management best practice, consistent performance in all of the assessed sections and a high level of partnership and participation in the Repak scheme. Manor Farm are an excellent Irish company, and are winners of the Repak Member of the year Award for 2014. The company, also known as Carton Brothers, is a family run business, now in its eight generation. They employ 650 people and produces the well known Manor Farm chicken brand. The Awards Adjudicators were very impressed with every aspect of their business. Their use of company data and statistics is superb. They have been working hard on saving packaging at source for many years. They are continually searching for new solutions to provide the best packaging for their customers in an environmentally friendly way. They work very closely with Repak, as well as other projects under the Origin Green and Enterprise Ireland banners.

Manor Farm were also winners of the Best Packaging Prevention Initiative, and were runners up in that category last year.


REPAK UPDATE - AWARDS EDITION BEST RECOVERY OPERATOR (LARGE COMPANY) Irish Packaging Recycling Ltd. Irish Packaging Recycling Ltd. was established in September 2007 when the parent company Panda Waste Services acquired Smurfit Recycling and re-branded the business as Irish Packaging Recycling. Irish Packaging Recycling has grown to be the largest commercial recyclables exporter out of Ireland. IPR expanded dramatically in the intervening years and now handles the bulk of all recyclable materials leaving the country.

The operation consists of collecting, sorting, baling and shipping the recovered commodity materials and selling them on the international markets. IPR also acts as a broker for recyclables from third parties. IPR has its own office and staff in China and is the only operator in Ireland with an AQSIQ export licence for access directly into the Chinese markets, eliminating the need for a broker. In 2013 IPR processed 220,000 tonnes of material, of which 40,000 tonnes of OCC was shipped directly to mills. Irish Packaging Recycling secured a long term lease of the Dublin Regional Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) in Ballymount, Dublin, which has a licenced capacity for 100,000 tons per annum. In 2013 the facility processed 72,000 tons of material from the greater Dublin Region, the majority of which was collected directly from the kerbside. IPR has a very good working partnership with Repak as a contractor as well as other stakeholders. They are compliant with all relevant licence requirements at home and overseas. They apply industry best practice and are innovative in their approaches to maximise efficiencies where practical. IPR is a deserving winner of this award for scoring very well in all 6 criteria areas of this award (Standard of Application, Partnership with Repak, Partnership with Local Authorities, Initiatives, Minimisation & Prevention, Future Business Plans).


REPAK UPDATE - AWARDS EDITION BEST PACKAGING PREVENTION INITIATIVE Manor Farm Carton Brothers produce the Manor Farm chicken brand and is one of the oldest family companies in the country. The business dates back to 1775 and is now located in a custom built factory in Shercock, Co. Cavan. Manor Farm has one of the most modern processing facilities in Europe producing up to 600,000 chickens per week. The business has worked closely with its suppliers and customers to find ways of optimising its packaging systems. This has resulted in decreases to back door and front door waste, an overall reduction in tonnes of packaging placed on the market and substantial financial savings.

BEST SUSTAINABLE PACKAGING Down 2 Earth Materials Since developing Down2Earth Materials (D2E) in 2009 to supply the Irish food market with compostable foodservice packaging, D2E has evolved into an award-winning, fully functioning department within STP. Their partnership with VEGWARE means that they now offer Ireland’s largest range of fully compostable packaging and add-on services to over 250 food businesses in Ireland. This, combined with STP’s extensive range of conventional packaging products and machinery, means that STP can offer a comprehensive range of services to both startup and established food businesses.

The primary focus for Down2Earth Materials is to concentrate on being Ireland’s certified compostable packaging specialists, where they can help and assist various sizes of Irish businesses to move towards more practical and sustainable products & solutions in the food and catering industry


REPAK UPDATE - AWARDS EDITION BEST PRACTICE IN THE HOSPITALITY SECTOR Buswells Hotel As one of the oldest hotels in the city,

Buswells have been in operation since 1882, growing from one Georgian townhouse to the current day size of five townhouses which maintain some of the original features of the Georgian era. Buswells Hotel have shown a commitment to waste management on-site, driven by a strong sense amongst the staff of their need to reduce the hotels environmental impact. This was clearly illustrated when facts and figures were readily available for all aspects of the site visit and evident in the enthusiastic approach to the implementation of new initiatives throughout the business. All avenues of waste management are being explored on an on-going basis and if an idea works, it is embraced into the company culture.

Environmental Awareness Officer and Environment Department Official at Limerick City & County Council, Sinéad and Jayne are to be congratulated for their active involvement in having Every Can Counts bins located in the Quays central shopping arcade in Limerick city and at 7 locations associated with collections at Childers Road Community Centre alone including the crèche, adjacent school, canteen, and youth centre as well as Bruff Tidy Towns, Knockainey National School and Tidy Towns, Castlelyons/ Bridesbridge Tidy Towns, and Elton Tidy Towns Kilmallock. KERBSIDE COLLECTION SERVICE Clean Ireland Recycling Clean Ireland is a family

run business located in Cree Co. Clare. It is owned by brothers John and Michael O’Donoghue, who have over 20 years in waste management industry. They have a large kerbside customer basis of 30,000 households and they collect in Clare, Limerick, Kilkenny and South Tipperary. They have a 6 bin collection system which consists of residual bin, mixed dry recyclables, food waste, glass, grass and clothes. They accept an extended range of materials in the mixed dry recyclables bin once they are clean and dry. Brian Lyons and Caroline Walsh receiving the Kerbside Collection Service Award

The introduction of the multiple compartment collection vehicles which is the first of its kind in Europe has meant they only have to do fortnightly collections. This in turn minimises disruption to customers and lowers the carbon footprint and logistics costs of collection. They are very active in customer recycling and awareness – All new customers are provided with a “Welcome Pack” and their website provides information on all their services including links to information leaflets and to their composting DVD. Their Pay per Weight charging method which applied the “Polluter Pays” principle has proved successful as they have a very low contamination rate of 6% in their unique 360L Mixed Dry Recyclables bin.


REPAK UPDATE - AWARDS EDITION BEST RECOVERY OPERATOR (SMALL TO MEDIUM COMPANY) Leinster Environmentals Leinster Environmentals was established in 2003, and operate from its facility in Haggardstown, Dundalk, Co. Louth. The business objective of the company is to supply high quality secondary raw materials to discerning customers in the international plastics moulding industry. Leinster Environmentals deals with many materials that are considered difficult to recycle, such as hard plastics and plastic film, and adds value to the material, turning it into a positive valued commodity. The company works with many other Repak registered Recovery Operators, providing them with an outlet for some of the materials that they are unable to properly process themselves, and subsequently ships the material directly to verified and legitimate end markets across Europe and Asia for recycling.

Leinster Environmentals recycled more than 15,000 tonnes of waste plastic materials during 2013, the majority consisting of postconsumer and industrial waste plastic packaging. Aside from plastic they company also handle and recycle paper.

CIVIC AMENITY / RECYCLING CENTRE OF THE YEAR Kilkenny County Council (Dunmore Recycling and Waste Disposal Centre) The Dunmore Recycling and Waste Disposal Centre is located in a convenient location outside Kilkenny City. It is owned and managed by Kilkenny County Council. The site serves Kilkenny City and the surrounding areas to a population of over 95,000 – last year they had over 33,000 users visiting the centre with 3,260 tonnes of material accepted at the centre during the year and diverted from local landfills. It is opened 6 days per week with very flexible opening hours which in turn maximises its accessibility to the general public. The site offers an excellent range of materials accepted and is considered a valuable service to the local community.

Communication and awareness are instrumental to the continued success of this civic amenity site. They go to great lengths to educate their users and the community with recycling talks and tours, leaflets and competitions. This is Kilkenny’s third time entering this Award and it is no surprise that they are the well-deserved winner this year.
