Steampunk Victorian Ball

High Desert Steam presents its fourth annual ball, which is the highlight of a day filled with musical performances, contra dancing and other events in Virginia City that reflect the ball’s theme “Traveling to Future’s Past.” On Saturday, Sept. 13, the Comstock Steampunk Invasion begins with a parade at noon, followed by an afternoon train ride from Virginia City to Gold Hill and back hosted by the Sacramento Steam Society, vending bazaar and entertainment in the Silver Queen Hotel, 28 N. C St., throughout the day. The festivities move to Piper’s Opera House, 12 N. B St., later in the evening with Asha World Dancers’ medicine show Dr. Belladonna’s Spirits of the Wild, Wild West Revival, which starts at 6 p.m. Tickets are $20. The Steampunk-Victorian Ball follows at 8 p.m. Participants are welcome to wear their favorite steampunk, neoVictorian or other twist on late-19th century dress, but costumes aren’t required. Tractors & Truffles

The Fallon-area farm-to-fork event features farm tours and a hosted lunch, along with a late afternoon cocktail hour followed by a multi-course dinner prepared on site in Fallon’s Oats Park. Chef Ryan Scott of the Live Well Network’s TV show Food Rush joins guest chefs Steve Hernandez and Mark Davis in preparing a gourmet meal using produce and meat from local farms and ranches. Lake Tahoe Uke Festival Ukulele players and aficionados gather in Lake Tahoe for the inaugural festival presented by the producer of the annual Reno Ukulele Festival. The official uke fest portion of the weekend begins at 9 a.m. and culminates with a Sunset Concert at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 13, at the North Lake Tahoe Event Center, 8318 N. Lake Blvd., Kings Beach. Tickets for the concert are $35. On Sunday, Sept. 14, uke players will jam on the beach during the Tahoe Fall Classic of the O’Neill SUP & Paddleboard Race Series. Reno Philharmonic: Classix One

The Classix concert celebrates the 200th anniversary of Francis Scott Key’s The Star-Spangled Banner with a reprise performance of Michael Gandolfi’s Chesapeake: Summer of 1814, an historical narrative that tells the story of the inception of the national anthem. The program also features Dudley Buck’s variations on the national anthem, classic Gershwin songs performed by University of Nevada, Reno voice professor Albert Lee and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6 in F major, op. 68 “Pastorale.” The orchestra performs at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 14, and 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 16, at the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts, 100 S. National Championship Air Races

The 51st annual event is considered the world’s longest running air race and the only closed course pylon racing event in the world. While the air races and air show kicked off on Sunday, Sept. 10, the high-flying action continues through Sunday, Sept. 14. Six different race plane classes fly just 60 feet from the ground, with the Unlimited and Jet classes reaching speeds more than 500 miles per hour. Spectators get to see various aircraft in flight, as well as observe military display and demonstrations, aircraft display and other attractions at Reno Stead Airport, 4895 Texas Ave., Stead.
