Reno Ukulele Festival

The sixth annual festival celebrates the humble stringed instrument, which is often heard in Hawaiian music but is also prominent in other musical genres. The event begins on Thursday, April 24, and continues through Saturday, April 26, on the second floor of John Ascuaga’s Nugget, 1100 Nugget Ave, Sparks. More than 20 ukulele builders will be on hand in the musical marketplace and a public stage will feature free performances and lessons for all levels of players. Headlining acts include swing jazz duo Sarah Maisel & Craig Chee with fellow uke players Heidi Swedberg & Daniel Ward, who will hit the Celebrity Showroom stage starting at 8 p.m. on Friday, April 25. Tickets are $32. Grammy award-winning singer-songwriter Daniel Ho and multi-instrumentalist Gerald Ross will perform at 8 p.m. on Saturday, April 26, in the Celebrity Showroom. Tickets are $28. Treasure Our Parks Fun Run/Treasure Quest
As part of its Healthy Parks Healthy People initiative, Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation presents this event that kicks off Treasure Quest, a day of family fun at the Rancho San Rafael Regional Park, 1595 N. Sierra St., on Saturday, April 26. The 5K begins at the Chinese Pagoda at 9 a.m., followed by a free one-mile kids' fun run at 10 a.m. The registration fee for the 5K is $25 per person for runners ages 13 and older. Proceeds from the fun run help Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation further its mission to raise awareness and appreciation of parks. Following the run, kids can explore various free hands-on activities highlighting treasures found here in Northern Nevada during Treasure Quest from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. For fun run registration, visit www. tmparksfoundation.org/5k. Reno Chamber Orchestra
The RCO concludes its 2013-2014 season with a collaboration with the University of Nevada, Reno Chamber Singers. Maestro Theodore Kuchar will lead the choir and orchestra in Haydn’s dramatic “Lord Nelson" Mass. The program will also feature Maestro Kuchar’s own arrangement of the String Quartet No. 1 by Janacek and a performance by the winner of the RCO’s annual College Concerto Competition. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 26, and 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 27, at the Nightingale Concert Hall in the Church Fine Arts Building, 1335 N. Virginia St. at UNR. Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon
TheatreWorks of Northern Nevada presents this extravaganza that attempts to recreate all 209 Brothers Grimm fairy tales. This oneact play takes the well-known stories of princesses, witches, wood-cutters and dwarves and spins them together into a fast-paced, comic effort to fit every tale ever told into a single hour. The play will be performed by the TheatreWorks of Northern Nevada Youth Company, a troupe of 8- to 12-year-old child actors. Performances start at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 25, and Saturday, April 26, with a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday, April 27, at the Laxalt Auditorium in the Warren Nelson Building, 401 W. Spring Wings Festival
View various types of shorebirds and waterfowl that fly through the Lahontan Valley during this annual spring migration. The 17th annual festival offers tours, workshops, exhibits and other birding-related events on Friday, April 25, and Saturday, April 26. The indoor activities take place at the Churchill County Fairgrounds, 325 Sheckler Road, Fallon. Outdoor activities will take place at the Lahontan Valley Wetlands.
