Run or Dye Let your colors show this Saturday for this fun run at the University of Nevada, Reno. Runners of all ages and fitness levels are invited to participate in this charity event in which participants run a 5K course and get doused in colorful dye—the whiter the apparel, the better the colors show. Participants are also encouraged to wear costumes. The event starts at 9 a.m., June 1, at Mackay Stadium at UNR, 1664 N. Virginia St. Runners should pre-register online and pick up their running packet at Scheels, 1200 Scheels Drive, Sparks, by Friday, May 31. Spring Surfstock
Reno doesn’t have a surfing scene, but that won’t stop several area bands from putting on a surf rock festival this Saturday near Sparks Marina Park. Mighty Surf Lords, Hell Billys, So Long Sucker, Sneaky Tikis and the Aqua Velvets will perform at this all-day event starting at 1 p.m., June 1, at Anchors Bar & Grill, 325 Harbour Cove Drive, Ste. 201, Sparks. Valhalla Renaissance Faire
Do you own a bodice or a codpiece? Do you often slip in an archaic word or phrase such as “anon,” pray tell” or “forsooth” in everyday conversation? Then, prithee, do make haste to the Valhalla Renaissance Faire at Lake Tahoe. The 21st annual event kicks off this Saturday, June 1, for two weekends of Elizabethan-era costumes, entertainment and revelry. The festival will have a Scottish invasion theme during the first weekend. There will be magic shows, contests, games and other activities geared toward a younger audience. Pirates and barbarians will take over the festival grounds the following weekend, June 8-9. Highlights include scavenger hunts, costume contests and a talk-like-a-pirate competition. Each weekend will feature music, dancing, theatrical performances and more than 100 merchants offering artwork, clothing, historical weapons, jewelry and leather goods. The gates are open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, June 1-2, 8-9, at Camp Richardson Resort, 1900 Jameson Beach Road, South Lake Tahoe. Brüka Theatre brings back Willy Russell’s one-character play about a middle-aged woman’s “strategy to love just being yourself.” Actress Mary Bennett revives her role as the titular character, a bored, working class housewife who finds a new purpose in life after spending a holiday in Greece. The play opens at 8 p.m. on Friday, May 31, at Brüka Theatre, 99 N. Virginia St. A champagne reception follows the performance. The play continues its run through June 22. Show times are 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday with a Wednesday night show on June 19. There will also be a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday, June 9, followed by a talk-back session with the company. Social Science The Terry Lee Wells Nevada Discovery Museum is a great place for kids to explore and learn about the natural world, but this Saturday, the grown-ups will get a chance to play. Social Science is an adults-event for those age 21 and older. The evening promises cool science demonstrations and art projects, as well as a DJ spinning music, gourmet food offered by several local food trucks, beer from Great Basin Brewing Co. and Silver Peak and coffee from Magpie Coffee Roasters.
