Do you own a bodice or a codpiece? Do you often slip in an archaic word or phrase such as “anon,” pray tell” or “forsooth” in everyday conversation? Then, prithee, do make haste to the Valhalla Renaissance Faire at Lake Tahoe. The 21st annual event kicks off this Saturday, June 1, for two weekends of Elizabethan-era costumes, entertainment and revelry. The festival will have a Scottish invasion theme during the first weekend. There will be magic shows, contests, games and other activities geared toward a younger audience. Pirates and barbarians will take over the festival grounds the following weekend, June 8-9. Highlights include scavenger hunts, costume contests and a talk-like-a-pirate competition. Each weekend will feature music, dancing, theatrical performances and more than 100 merchants offering artwork, clothing, historical weapons, jewelry and leather goods. The gates are open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, June 1-2, 8-9, at Camp Richardson Resort, 1900 Jameson Beach Road, South Lake Tahoe. Reno doesn’t have a surfing scene, but that won’t stop several area bands from putting on a surf rock festival this Saturday near Sparks Marina Park. Brüka Theatre brings back Willy Russell’s one-character play abou t a middle-aged woman’s “strategy to love just being your self.” Actress Mary Bennett reviv es her role as the titular character, a bored, working class hous ewife who finds a new purpose in life after spending a holiday in Greece.
