MUSEUMS NATIONAL AUTOMOBILE MUSEUM: Be the Astronaut. The exhibition immerses visitors in the science and engineering of spaceflight via state-of-the-art video game technology, simulators and actual NASA reconnaissance data. Using astronaut ID swipe cards, participants launch in space capsules like the USS Roddenberry and drive on the moon or Mars. The exhibit includes the Mars rover “Opportunity” mockup from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, space suit replicas and space memorabilia from American pop culture. TERRY LEE WELLS NEVADA DISCOVERY MUSEUM (THE DISCOVERY): A T. rex Named Sue. At 42 feet long and 12 feet high at the hips, Sue is the largest, most complete and best-preserved T. rex ever discovered. A dramatic, life-sized skeleton cast of Sue is the centerpiece of this exhibition that also features handson and digital interactive exhibits that help you uncover Sue’s amazing past and explore the field of paleontology. The exhibit will be on view through Jan. 15. Museum hours are 10am to 5pm on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday and noon to 5pm on Sunday. The museum is open from 10am to 8pm on Wednesday. FILM STRUGGLE & HOPE: Among the wealth of untold stories in American history is the rise and slow disappearance of all-black towns that sprung up following the end of the Civil War. This feature-length documentary mines the stories of the last-remaining residents, while charting their heroic efforts to ensure their independence and hopes for a better future. Artown’s Cultural Connections music series concludes with a performance by the globe-trotting group led by vocalist Azam Ali. The band was praised by Huffington Post as “an evolutionary force in contemporary Middle Eastern music” for its global trance sound that blends medieval Sufi poetry and folk songs from their native Iran and surrounding countries in the Persian Gulf with acoustic instrumentation and electronic music.
