John I Dent Cup Preview: Round 2 Saturday, 12th April 2014 Unfortunately due to wet weather conditions and ground closure the first round of the John I Dent Cup was postponed. As a result, clubs are in discussion to reschedule those fixtures as soon as possible.

Match of the Round:

Royals (Runners Up) v Queanbeyan (3rd), Phillip Oval, Phillip First Grade: 3:05pm, Reserve Grade: 1:40pm, Colts: 12:15pm

We have an exciting Skins match of the round this weekend with a rematch of last year’s preliminary final. Both clubs will be raring to go with Queanbeyan scheduled the bye in round 1 and Royals affected by the postponing of round 1. Renowned for their tight matches, we can expect nothing less in this clash of the competition heavy weights. Look for both Queanbeyan and Royals forwards to try and get the better of each other. The 2014 season for Queanbeyan will bring about many challenges none more so than improving on last year’s result as a club. A number of Colts players have graduated through to grade and their transition will be crucial to the success of the club. With the loss of key personnel the opportunity will arise for the young brigade to push for spots in the top grade creating a competitive and enthusiastic attitude at training. Royals will be without key forward Tom Staniforth who will be travelling with the Brumbies Squad this st weekend for the game against the Reds, but his replacement Nathan Selwood is not new to 1 grade having started in last year’s grand final. An injury to hooker Andrew Michael-Copsy and Fullback Ben Johnston sees st Nathan Regan and Jamie Bodman get an opportunity in 1 grade. The last time these two teams played: Preliminary Final 2013 (Royals 33 def Queanbeyan 30)

Uni-Norths (7th) v Tuggeranong (Premiers), ANU North Oval, Turner First Grade: 3.15pm, Reserve Grade: 1.50pm, Colts: 12.25pm

The Owls have a tough ask on their hands taking on the defending Premiers this weekend at home. While not being able to play last weekend wasn’t ideal, the clubs has been working hard to improve on their 2013 performance. Uni-North’s welcome Allan Alaalatoa and Tom McVerry who with Scot Meakins, Cuan Hablutzel, Taylor Bunting and Wily Fine will turn out for the club for the first time. Expect the Owls to come out firing in their first home game of the season. Vikings are kick starting their title defense against the Owls this weekend, a team who they have had the better of since 2010. Tuggeranong have only 6 of their starting 15 from the Grand Final playing this weekend giving plenty of new up and coming players like Rob Gillespie, Dean Oakman Hunt and Andrew Robinson a st great opportunity to make a claim for 1 grade. New Recruit fly half Isaac Thompson will turn out for the club for the first time after having played alongside Tim Cree, Rodney Iona, JP Praduad and Jermone Niumata in the ACT XV program. The last time these two teams played: Round 15, 2013 (Tuggeranong 49 def Uni-Norths 13)

Easts (6th) v Gungahlin (5th), Griffith Oval, Griffith First Grade: 3.05pm, Reserve Grade: 1.40pm, Colts: 12.15pm

Easts will be at home this weekend taking on Gungahlin, a side who go the better of them in last year’s fixtures. In saying that, we can expect Easts to be looking to continue on improving from last year and this match provide a great opportunity for the club. With Easts also having a colts team this year we will no doubt see these players get there opportunity backing up in the higher grades giving the club a bright future ahead. st Four colts’ ages players will feature in Easts 1 Grade team this weekend, with three of them representing the ACT u20’s team. Gungahlin will be fielding one of their strongest sides this weekend with the inclusion of 4 Brumbies players this weekend. Ruaidhri Murphy and Josh Mann-Rea will bolster up the forward pack, which will be without Ben McGee due to injury, while Conrad Hoffman and Lionel Cronje will run the show from half back and Fly half. Matt Hawke will start at fullback this week instead of his familiar position inside centre, which will be filled by Paula Katoa. The last time these two teams played: Round 15, 2013 (Gungahlin 70 def Easts 0)

MATCH PREVIEW Queanbeyan’s 3rd grade side have been the bench mark for the last 2 years having not lost a game. They will look to continue there unbeaten run against 2013 finalist Royals. Royals have made a number of changers to team that was meant to take the field last weekend against Wests.

Like 3rd grade, both these clubs featured in the finals last year with Queanbeyan against tasting success however for Royals they were unfortunately knocked out in the preliminary final. We can expect this match up to be even contested across the park.

MATCH PREVIEW Easts have named and unchanged side this weekend which boast a number of players who have feature in 1st grade. The same can be said for Gungahlin who with the inclusion 4 Brumbies player to 1st, also have a very strong side especially in key positions.

Both clubs will see this game as a great opportunity to get early competition points. While Gungahlin struggled last year, this year they will be a lot stronger. Whereas Easts, while unsure as to their side, we can guarantee though they will be out to make an early statement.

MONARO 1st DIVISION & WOMEN’S COMPETITION FIRST DIVISION: ROUND 2 With two of the three matches in round 1 scheduled in Canberra, unfortunately due to wet weather conditions the RMC v Cooma and ADFA v Goulburn matches were postponed. However Yass v Hall did go ahead with Yass shaking off the cobwebs from the previous weekends Monaro Pre Season Carnival to run riot over the Bushrangers 54-12. Three Yass players scored doubles in a total of 10 tries, while it was a tough day with the boot as the Yass kicker only kicked 2/10. Hall though in 2nd grade put on a clinic, touching up Yass 52-7. Hall’s fullback scored 22 points while their outside centre scored a hatrick.

WOMEN’S DIVISION – Pre Season 7’s Like the rest of the matches in Canberra, the girl’s pre season 7’s carnival was also cancelled. However the girls are back in action this weekend at ANU North Oval for the 7’s. North Oval hosted this same carnival in 2013 and again this carnival is tied in with the Men’s Premier Division Match.
