Read Luke 5:27-32 Summary: “ ‘Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?” Jesus said to them in reply, ‘Those who are healthy do not need a physician, but the sick do. I have not come to call the righteous to repentance but sinners.’” (Matthew 9:14-15)

Spend two minutes in silence. Then repeat this passage from Scripture and let it speak to your heart.

Meditation This brief gospel scene is compelling because it describes not just Jesus calling one disciple, but his call to every person. Jesus moved through Galilean society, not handpicking the smartest and the purest but instead the castoffs. The scandal of this scene in the eyes of the religious was that Jesus called forth a new community of disciples based on association with sinners rather than separation from them. Levi responds to Jesus’ call in two ways: first, he leaves everything behind and follows Jesus; second, he throws a party for Jesus, a party crowded with tax collectors. He does not give up on his friends but instead draws them into the presence of Christ.

Live Lent! I will reach out in kindness to someone who seems to be lonely, hurting, or despairing.

Pray Lord Jesus, transform me by the power of your Spirit, so I may become your compassionate and welcoming presence to all. Renew your Church so we may become a true home for those who are unwanted, or lost, or unacceptable. Amen.
