How were you introduced to Canadian Humanitarian? Why do you support the work of Canadian Humanitarian? Dick Northcott introduced the organization to me. He is a client and I told him I wanted to help somehow and all I knew how to do was magic. Hi invited me on an expedition, and I fell in love with the children, the country and Canadian Humanitarian. What motivated you to establish the Chain Reaction Ride? I was motivated to do the “chain reaction ride” because I wanted to do something “big” with my life which would have an impact on many lives… therefore the birth of the idea to ride across Canada on my bicycle to raise money to build a school in Ethiopia……. Other comments Vern? I love the support…. Everyone wants to help in any way they can. It is amazing.

We asked Andrea a few questions about her event and involvement with Canadian Humanitarian:
How were you introduced to Canadian Humanitarian? I was introduced to Canadian Humanitarian when we adopted our youngest son from Ethiopia. Travelling there made me realize that helping one child is not enough. Why do you support the work of Canadian Humanitarian? What motivated you to hold the Heroes of Hope event in Regina? Adopting a country’s children does not solve the problems of the country. Therefore I am very motivated to help raise awareness of the social issues in Ethiopia and to raise money to make a difference in the lives of the children that live there. The problems of the country are no fault of the children and they should be able to grow up and have a future in their own country.
Tell us about your event? Our chapter is having its first annual Heroes of Hope dinner fundraiser. Our guest speaker is Ted Jaleta who is from Ethiopia. He immigrated to Canada fifteen to twenty years ago and has a very inspiring story, plus can speak with direct knowledge of the challenges Ethiopia faces.

Scotia Bank Marathon Organizers: Ian Greene and Suzanne Downey How were you introduced to Canadian Humanitarian? Suzanne: I came across CH while searching for a travel volunteer opportunity Ian: Through CAFAC, a sister organization of CH, through which we adopted our Ethiopian son, Girum, seven years ago.
Why do you support the work of Canadian Humanitarian? Suzanne: I felt an immediate connection with CH as it is from Alberta and is non-religious and non-political. I saw first hand in October 2011 on my expedition that the funds raised go directly to the programs. The families touched by CH are truly seeing and feeling a difference. Dr Northcott said it best “we are helping people become contributors, not consumers”. Ian: My wife, daughter and son volunteered with CH in Ethiopia for two weeks in 2010, and we were greatly impressed by the good work done by CH in Ethiopia.

What motivated you to participate in the Scotiabank Toronto Marathon on behalf of Canadian Humanitarian? Ian: By March of 2011 there was a large enough group of people in Toronto who had either volunteered with CH in Ethiopia or were sponsoring children that we were able to start a Toronto Chapter. At our first Board meeting, we discussed various fund-raising opportunities, and settled on the Toronto Waterfront Marathon as our first major fundraising drive. About 20 of our supporters ran for the CH team, and we raised more than $11,000 in sponsorships!

I believe this project stemmed from a course David was teaching at OC called the EDEN project (Economic Development in Emerging Nations). We were already planning a trip to the Serengeti in Tanzania at the time so adding Ethiopia to our trip was an easy diversion. And seeing as how we had never been to Ethiopia we thought it would be a great idea, as it turned out it was a great decision. Why do you support the work of Canadian Humanitarian? After visiting all of Canadian Humanitarian’s projects in Ethiopia and working closely with

the Ethiopian children on that first trip, both Shei and I felt there was lots that we could and wanted to be a part of it. Canadian Humanitarian does amazing work with a limited budget, and there is no question they are making a huge difference to the lives of many Ethiopian children. What motivated to start _____________ Test of Humanity event in your community? When we came back after our first trip from Ethiopia with Canadian Humanitarian we tried to come up with ways to raise money that would
be fun and have a good chance of getting the entire community involved. Penticton/Summerland has a huge mountain biking community but has not had a mountain bike race in the last eight years. So with the help of our friends at the Bike Barn we came up with the idea to do an endurance event where you have to do as many laps as you can in a certain amount of time. It seems our idea was a good one as we raised over 40k the first year. Now the question is... can we do it again? I guess we will know the answer to that one on September 23rd, 2012 when we hold our second annual Test of Humanity event.

Last year we had nearly 30 sponsors, 65 volunteers and just under 200 riders. $35,000 was raised in pledges alone. Hope for Tomorrow
with Stephen L ewis How were you introduced to Canadian Humanitarian? Through my friend Gillian White, we were both in the process of adopting our little boys from Ethiopia and she was putting together a fundraiser for CHOIR. My husband and I weren’t able to attend that event but were happy to attend the Melissa Faye Green evening at the Winter Club organized by Wendy Flemons. Why do you support the work of Canadian Humanitarian? … it is important to our family to support our son’s birth country. We were immediately won over by Canadian Humanitarian’s approach to the work they do and the projects they support in Ethiopia. The size of the organization and the fact that
its founders are incredibly active in the work that they do led us to want to support the organization in whatever way we could. The expeditions that are led several times a year to Ethiopia give volunteers an opportunity to roll up their sleeves and do work which will have a lasting impact in small communities. Working together with local staff and community leaders Canadian Humanitarian helps to provide healthy environments and hopeful futures for children and their families through their Child Sponsorship program, which gives everyone an opportunity to make a difference in the life of a future leader.
Other comments about your event? We are so fortunate to have the group of people working on this event that we do. The Calgary Chapter all share a passion for supporting the work that CH does and without the talents and skills that every one of our volunteers brings to this event we would not succeed.
