Remembrance Winter 2022

PRESIDENT & CEO MESSAGE This edition of Remembrance is devoted to the 80th Commemoration of the attack on Pearl Harbor. We were fortunate to have 150 World War II survivors in attendance this year. That’s a good number given our veterans health and average age (late 90s) along with the continuing constraints of dealing with the COVID crisis. Our stormy weather in Hawaii didn’t help matters either.

We start our coverage of the historic events at the main ceremony on the morning of December 7. We had an interment on the USS Arizona that afternoon. There were events in Hawaii and California involving Admiral Isaac Kidd, killed that fateful Sunday morning eighty years ago aboard the USS Arizona. This edition has coverage of a live dive conducted by the National Park Service on the USS Utah. Other events included memorials held for victims of the USS Oklahoma, the USS Nevada and the USS Utah. And we have a wrap up with the amazing Rosie the Riveters who visited us. If you missed any of these events, please visit our website to view the ceremonies in their entirety. Coverage was provided by Defense Media Agency. Our website also has memorable photos taken by our Pacific Historic Parks photographers. A sincere thank you to our donors for your support. The list of events and logistics you funded is very long. You were instrumental in making all this happen.

We also want to thank our new park superintendent, Tom Leatherman, for these words delivered at the main ceremony on the morning of December 7, 2021. “I am deeply grateful for the support the park staff has given me and for the unwavering support of two key partners, the United States Navy and our non profit partner, Pacific Historic Parks. Every single time the National Park Service has asked for support, they did all they could to help us. Among other daily challenges, we successfully implement significant dock repairs as expeditiously as possible and have been able to pull together this event that’s also being livestreamed for those that could not make it in person. It is clear to me the relationship between our organizations is as strong as ever and I look forward to building an even stronger one during the time I am here.”
