PRESIDENT & CEO MESSAGE In this issue we celebrate Women’s History Month with a look back at an all women unit quickly assembled following the December 7, 1941 attack on Oahu. The Women’s Air Raid Defense (WARD) was formed some forty years before Congress made Women’s History Month a national celebration. Known as the Shuffleboard Pilots, they tracked all airplane movements picked up on radar following the surprise attack that launched America into World War II. Also in this issue we have the story of a 19-year-old Ohio man killed aboard the USS Arizona that fateful Sunday morning, and the special Christmas card and message he had mailed to his parents. We chronicle the losses the Honolulu Fire Department suffered on the day of infamy. And we bring you the story of Ken Potts turning 100. He’s one of two remaining USS Arizona survivors. Lou Conter, who just published a book, turns 100 this September. This issue has a profile of Clarence “Boogie” Kahilihiwa, who passed away on March 5. Uncle Boogie and his wife Ivy were part of our PHP Ohana. He was also known worldwide. If you had the opportunity to visit Kalaupapa on the island of Molokai, meeting and interacting with Uncle Boogie was an experience you will never forget. Due to COVID-19, Kalaupapa National Historical Park remains closed as the elderly residents there remain the most vulnerable to the disease. Kalaupapa will likely be the last park under our PHP umbrella to reopen. Pearl Harbor National Memorial was the first followed by Diamond Head State Monument and the War in the Pacific Historical Park in Guam. American Memorial Park in Saipan is expected to reopen later this year as vaccination programs accelerate and visitors return. During these difficult times, we thank all those who have supported us. And we ask for your continued support as we hopefully transition soon to pre COVID times. Finally, in the spirit of Women’s History Month celebrated in March, and with Mother’s Day this coming May 9, we bring you the story of Mother’s Day messages sailors stationed at Pearl Harbor received some 85 years ago.
