letter from the editor

The stylish life magazine is finally here! After a long period of hard work, dedication, and sleepless nights, we’re finally launching our first inaugural issue of Remark Magazine. With this May 2013 issue, we set out to create a new way to make a statement in the lifestyle magazine industry. We wanted to break the chains of the norm and give readers content that was not only fresh, but provided excellence in terms of quality and style. Why should it just be a magazine about lifestyles when it can be a stylish magazine about life? We have a variety of content that in itself is a complete representation of the category it’s from. With fashion and beauty, to health, fitness, food, travel and even technology, there is surely something for everyone to enjoy. We provided articles that were relevant, interesting and at the same time visually appealing. You’ll find yourself reading articles from areas that you might normally find yourself flipping past or not reading at all. We could not have gotten this far without the strong support we’ve received from the writers, photographers and industry insiders that contributed, guided and followed us each step of the way. Only with this level of dedicated support have we been able to get through the process and over the hurdles of launching a brand new publication. With this same support, we hope to build a strong foundation with our readers. Through their feedback, we’ll form not only a great magazine, but a breeze of change in the industry. We’ve set out and achieved our first goal of launching the magazine, but this is just the start. Enjoy the Remark we’ve made together.

train outdoors

TOP FIVE REASONS TO TRAIN

OUTDOORS BY MARIO RIGBY

Now that winter is behind us and spring is here, it’s time to get your butt in gear. Why not take advantage of the beautiful weather and take your workout outside. Training outdoors has been scientifically proven to have greater health benefits, and the fresh air and new scenery will provide a pleasant change from the repetitiveness of those winter indoor workouts. Consider these top 5 reasons to train outdoors:

page 8 | the stylish life magazine

train outdoors

5. SUNSHINE Lack of sunlight can lead to symptoms of depression, also known as the winter blues. According to the Canadian Mental Health Association, approximately 15% of Canadians suffer from the winter blues. This is due to the lack of exposure to sunlight which lowers vitamin D levels. Studies have also shown that there are links between vitamin D and insulin regulation, stroke, heart attack and immune function. Most importantly, sunlight makes us happier. 4. FRESH AIR By breathing in fresh oxygen you feel a sense of euphoria. Unlike filtered air confined in your home or at the gym, fresh outdoor air can help reduce stress levels and increase productivity in your brain. Your brain requires 20% of your body’s oxygen. More oxygen to your brain means more clarity and higher energy levels, ultimately making you smarter and sharper. 3. SPEND LESS MONEY The average cost for a gym membership in Canada is anywhere from $30 to $50 per month or $600 yearly. By joining a recreational league like tag football, tennis, beach volleyball or rowing, you only spend money on initial start-up or registration fees which saves you money, while still staying active.

health

2. BURN MORE CALORIES Getting out of a workout rut by changing up your exercise routine is as simple as just stepping outside. Ditch the treadmill, elliptical and stationary bike and replace it with nature. If you factor in Mother Nature’s way, such as wind, hills, varied temperatures and other external variables, an outdoor run burns 5 percent more calories than running the same distance on a treadmill. 1. EXCITEMENT Your options are open to countless outdoor activities such as running, tennis, rowing, lake swimming and so much more. Why confine yourself in the four walls of a gym when you have a plethora of nature’s land to grace you with fun and exciting activities? A healthy amount of cortisol level increases in your body when working outdoors. This leaves you feeling ecstatic, also known as a runner’s high, and will give you that extra push just when you need it. There you have it. Take off that winter coat, shake up your routine and head outdoors for a positive and exciting experience. Watch your health and fitness improve tremendously just by making this small move and find yourself enjoying it more as you’re doing it!

FLIRTY WITH SOME EDGE

Shadows and liners in bright hues were seen all over the runways for spring. To create something pretty and flirty yet give it some edge, just add a graphic liner. To achieve page 10 | the stylish life magazine

a mix of soft and edgy, brush a pink shadow from the lash line to the crease. Swipe another pink shadow one shade darker in the crease to give the eye dimension.

Sometimes a pink shadow can make you look like you have allergies. To avoid this, stay away from pinks with too much red. Â For a youthful and luminous finish,

apply a shimmering highlighter on the brow bone and the inner corner of the eye. To anchor this look and create some contrast, use a black liquid liner across the eye and extend it towards the brow. This is perfect for a night out, but to keep it day appropriate, wing the liner just past the natural shape of your eye. If you don’t have a steady hand, work your brush in short strokes or why not try Scotch tape as a guide. Liquid liner is trickier to work with so save this for when you’re a pro. Instead, try a gel liner or a damp brush in a powder shadow for something more forgiving. Finish the look with lots of mascara and soft pink blush and lips. Have fun with this look and try it in other bright shades like bold blues and Pantone shade of the year, emerald. BY EMILY KLINE WITH IVY KANA

Half way around the world lies the beautiful country of Sri Lanka, with its stunning landscapes and breathtaking scenery. An abundance of wildlife is packed into this small island, most famously home to the endangered Asian elephant. Ivy, a mother of three, volunteered with her 13-year-old daughter at The Millennium Foundation in Sri Lanka, where they helped provide and care for these gentle giants. The Millennium Foundation was founded in 1999 with the assistance of the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA). By providing a place of sanctuary, medical services and facilities, they have been continually working on improving the care, protection and treatment of the elephants in Sri Lanka by relying on donations and volunteers. The mother-daughter duo saw first-hand the cruelty mankind brings to this magical place we all call home. The elephants that they helped care for had been rescued from a life of abuse and neglect; worked too hard for profit. Their day started off unlike most. Waking up early to clean the elephants beds, then on to their morning bath in a river where they scrubbed down each elephant with a piece of coconut. Next were the vitamin and medicine balls hand fed to each animal. “The feeling you get when you are around these majestic animals every day is hard to explain,” said Ivy. “They are playful and stubborn and seem to have a wide range of feelings and cheeky personalities that put a smile on my face every day.” Ivy and her daughter did something most people could never dream of in a lifetime. Something that they will keep with them forever. However, they want everyone to know that we as a planet need to stop supporting the use of animals for entertainment and start properly treating and respecting them for what they really are. Magical.

Meet Liam Card, a home grown Ontario boy. Paisley, Ontario, if you want to get specific. Liam is currently celebrating the success of his debut novel, Exit Papers from Paradise. Dark and weirdly wonderful, Exit Papers follows the life of 35-year-old Isaac Sullivan. A plumber by day, Isaac dreams of becoming a surgeon and getting the hell out of Paradise, Michigan. The book deals with the question I am sure we all ask ourselves daily: is it too late to follow my dreams? Exit Papers are one of those rare finds you will not put down once started. You are left wanting to partake in further conversations and debates about Isaac’s ever present nightmare like daydreams and actions. Liam has left his readers engaged and eager to see what’s next. In the meantime, you can check out Liam’s movie, the Canadian Indie hit Textuality for which he wrote the screenplay. Textuality stars the talented Carly Pope, Eric McCormack, Jason Lewis of SATC fame, and himself, Liam Card. With writing like this, he has readers and fans anxiously anticipating his next new book. What doesn’t this guy do? Interesting Facts about Liam: Liam was a two-time Canadian Jr. Champion. He represented Canada at the Pan-Am Jr. Games and the World Jr. Track and Field Championships. After an unfortunate Achilles injury, Liam’s Olympic dreams were tragically page 14 | the stylish life magazine

no longer plausible. Liam himself worked as a plumber’s helper at one point in time. When it came to his character, Isaac, he really did know his stuff. He left a job on Bay Street in the financial field to pursue his

writing career. A well-made move, we might say. This one isn’t about Liam, but ironically Hell, Michigan, does exist about 550 km South of Paradise, Michigan. Exit Papers from Paradise is available anywhere books and e-books are sold, grab yourself a copy now!

a fresh new look

A Fresh New Look Standing proud in the middle of trendy Queen West is the new and highly anticipated hair salon, The Loft Toronto. With its vintage design and amazing talent it will surely be a hot spot in the hair world. Owner and mega talented hair stylist Sylvie Prud’Homme of The Loft Toronto sat down with Remark Magazine and divulged a bit about herself and her new salon

page 26 | the stylish life magazine

Why The Loft Toronto And Why Now? Opening a business is all about timing. I wanted to make sure I understood Toronto and its demographic well. I knew I wanted to situate myself in the right neighbourhood, and after spending time in the Queen West hood, I knew after three years I wanted to make my mark in it. I felt that I

needed to take on this adventure as a seasoned stylist. Having had experience on TV sets, shoots and involved with different Fashion Weeks, I felt that I was ready to commit to being in a salon and leading a team full time, and not as focused on being a freelance artist. My twenties were all about getting my hands in everything hair related.

a fresh new look My thirties are all about grounding my experiences and sharing them with others in my own domain. I love the idea of walking into a space and being surrounded by people, and it feeling like home. This is what The Loft Toronto is to me.

same satisfaction that makes me want to continue to be a hairstylist.

Who Or What Inspires You? What inspires me are my surroundings and who lives in them. I like to travel and take in the style of everyone on the street. Whenever I go away, I try to take an afternoon at a cafe and watch people go by and take it all in. My most recent inspiration was Brick Lane in London, England. It’s quite an eclectic little district, mostly full of kids coming in from the outskirts rummaging through vintage shops. The longer you looked at these kids, the more interesting they got. You quickly realize that everything they were wearing was most likely DIY. Jackets were torn up and resewn and hair was half buzzed probably by their buddy. I thrive on the idea of taking an idea and making it your own, giving it your own personal twist.

You’re Most Memorable Moment Thus Far? Opening The Loft Toronto has been a major impact and what I feel is the most memorable. I have never felt so much love and support as I have over the past couple of weeks. My family and friends have helped me make my dreamy vision of a salon come to fruition. I have been saying for years how great it would be to have a little eclectic vintage salon. On Tuesday, April 2, 2013, we opened our doors and people just kept coming in. Bringing flowers, champagne and wine; old keys (we have a “key wall”) and vintage plates that they sought after (we also have an antique plate collection in the salon); singing best wishes and such praise. It absolutely makes my heart explode at the amount of faith that people can have for one another. It is honestly what keeps me going day to day, and will never be forgotten.

What Made You Want To Become A Hairstylist? I definitely never had that “ah-ha” moment. After giving up a short career in animation, I was working as a receptionist at a salon/spa. I was already cutting friends’ hair at home, because we were all too broke and stubborn to pay for an actual legit haircut. I was in my early twenties and still trying to “figure it all out” when a stylist at my work said that I would make a good stylist. I shrugged my shoulders and didn’t give it much thought at the time. A seed was kind of planted, because before I knew it, I had enrolled into the apprenticing program at Algonquin College for Hair & Beauty. I really enjoyed the process of creating art through hair. It was kind of like painting or drawing with scissors. After I got the technique down and started working with clients, I realized how satisfying it was to make someone feel better about themselves through how they were projecting themselves to the world in the way they appeared. This is the

How Long Have You Been In The Industry? Unofficially, sixteen years. Officially, nine years.

What is your favourite hairstyle at the moment? Hmm. That is a tough one. I’m big on short hair. Anyone that knows me, knows that’s a given. I love Agyness Deyn with her twiggy look at the moment. Anything you hate about the hair world? Sock buns that actually have socks in them. Disgusting. What Are Your Top 3 Hair Products You Love To Use? L’Oreal Professionnel Absolut Repair Cellular Masque I call it the “Banana Mask”. The smell reminds me of a banana cream pie and who doesn’t want their hair to smell like a sinful dessert? Plus it leaves your hair smooth for days. I use it once a week instead of my conditioner to keep my ever changing hair healthy and shiny.

leisure

Kerastase Soleil Aqua-Seal I am outside all summer long. So whether I am walking my dog, biking or sipping a glass of rosé at Jules Bistro in the sun, I know my hair is being exposed to UV rays and affecting my colour. A quick spray of this product on my locks after styling guarantees that my colour won’t fade or alter while not weighing down my coiffed hair. L’Oreal Professionnel Techni.Art Hot Style Constructor Backstage at Fashion Week, this is my goto product. I use it before any kind of heat penetrates the hair. Spray it on dry hair before curling it with an iron, before setting it into rollers or even before straightening it with a flat iron. It protects the hair from heat damage, as well as reinforces the effect of whatever tool you are using. Any advice you can give women on hair care? It breaks my heart to have clients spend so much time and money on their colour and then go to the drugstore to pick up whatever is on sale for shampoo and conditioner. If you are going to invest in your hair colour, why skimp on the “at home” care? Most drugstore products are less expensive because the ingredients are cheaper. What does that mean? That means that your shampoos cleansing ingredient is probably going to be the same as what is in your dishwashing soap, and that your conditioners are full off wax to make your hair feel like silk, but really it’s just building up on your strands. Yes, professional products are a higher price point, but they are also more concentrated, which means you use less and are stretching those pennies a long way while still maintaining the integrity of your hair.

BY: LAUREN “PANTS” PANTOLIANO

“Sex and Other Ways to Get to Know Each Other” Welcome to the first issue of Remark Magazine. If you are reading this fabulous publication, you’re no doubt savvy, attractive and interested in staying on top of all things in your life, including sex. You may be wondering why you need to read an article on sex if you’re already savvy and attractive, right? So why listen to me you ask? Here’s a little background: When I was asked to write this column, I couldn’t help but ask myself why they came to me. Sure I was flattered, but at the same time slightly confused. I’m not a gynecologist (thank god for spell check. Without it I never would have gotten past “gyn”); and that last line proves to you that I’m not a professional writer. So what’s my expertise on the subject that leads me to writing a column on sex? I’ve had my fair share of sexual partners (40+), and I’ve lived a mostly single life which has opened me up to a variety of sexual experiences. Some of which are wild and/or hilarious, and I’m excited to share them all with you. I am an honest, single, sexually active woman who has always been frank with my friends about my sexual encounters. Perhaps too honest. Even when I’m embarrassed by a sexual experience, I can’t help but

sex

rehash it with people I trust. Friends who can remind me that not all sexual experiences are mind-blowing and not all women can come on command; despite what the Fifty Shades trilogy have expressed to millions of women over the world. More on that at a later date. I truly believe that sharing one’s sexual proclivities, activities and fantasies with friends can be enlightening and inspiring. I want this article to serve as a conversation starter and I hope that my honesty will allow you to open up about what you like, don’t like and want to try, especially when it comes to this article. I encourage you to reach out with your opinions and thoughts, and know that this is an environment of no judgment. After all, who am I to judge? Some would call me a “loose” woman. Speaking of loose women, a friend used to envy me when I would talk about the men I slept with. When penis size came up and I indicated that I had been with a well-hung man (which was often), she would always say “You’re so lucky, you always get the big penises.” Then I reminded her that I still have not found the man I hope to spend the rest of my life with, and I’m destined for the big penis curse. After all the large manhoods I’ve experienced, it’s likely I’ll fall head over vagina for a man with a small member and will never feel sex again. So remember ladies (and gents), lucky is a matter of perspective; especially when you’re trying to get lucky. Until next time, keep it safe, keep it sexy, and when all else fails, keep it as a great story.

lift ladies

Lift Ladies,

LIFT! BY SHERIE MIRON

For many women a gym routine goes a little something like this: start with light stretching, lift 3 to 5 pound dumbbells, hit the mats to kill the abs with 200 meaningless crunches and then jump on the elliptical from anywhere between 30 minutes to an hour. Cardio time is dependent on the amount of guilt burdening you from that bottle of wine shared with your girlfriends last night. Unfortunately ladies, this little routine is not going to transform your body into the Victoria Secret model many aspire to be. The fear of becoming a bulky muscle Barbie is the most common misconception for why women avoid the free-weight section, and has become a plague amongst the ladies sweating it out in their Lulus on the cardio machines. Rest assured, lifting weights more than two pounds will not have you busting out of your Lulu tank tops like a SheHulk, and this is why. Women do not produce enough testosterone, the primary muscle building hormone. Although the ovaries and adrenal glands do produce the hormone, ladies are missing the “specific equipment” down there in order to reach the higher levels required for putting on mean mass. Also add in the fact that most women do not consume nearly enough calories to maintain their current weight, let alone build muscle. It is safe to say your biceps will not be growing two to three inches by going for the heavier dumbbells.

page 40 | the stylish life magazine

It is important to realize just how far someone has to push in the gym in order to see significant muscle gains. The heavier the lifts, the more you tear the muscle, and then fueled by the extra calories for repair and regrowth. This cycle is what builds bigger and stronger muscles. With all this in mind, how does a fat-torching metabolism, stronger bones and muscle definition sound to you? This is what weightlifting does! Studies have shown that a women lifting heavier at their 85% max for 5-8 reps burns twice as many calories than using lighter weights at their 45% max for 15 reps. This means less cardio time! The small tears that you make while lifting a little heavier, turn your muscles into a calorie-burning machine since your body has to work harder to repair the muscle. However, since you are not bicep curling like Arnold, the repairs aren’t nearly as great, but they are enough to keep your body burning fat in overtime. Combining a diet composed of lean proteins and healthy choices, along with a full-body weight circuit three times a week into your workout routine, can give you the leaner body results you have been working for. Keep your body guessing by switching up the intensity of the weight and repetitions. Switch from a lighter intensity with 12 to 15 reps, moderate intensity with 8 to 10 reps and max out with heavy intensity with 3 to 5 reps regularly. Gone are the days when women used nothing but the ThighMaster and Jazzercise videos. Now it’s time to get better results while potentially embarrassing a few boys in the gym by grabbing some heavier weights and breaking a mean sweat.

healthy indulgences

Healthy

Indulgences BY JENNA MATHEWS

We all have our vices; A glass of wine to wind down, our morning coffee, or that bowl of ice cream to boost our mood. We are taught to feel bad about indulging and think only of the negative attributes of our favourite indulgences, even though we generally consume them moderately. There’s no reason to feel bad about it anymore. The health benefits of our everyday indulgences really can outweigh the unfavourable effects of them.

COFFEE

For most of us, coffee in the morning is like nothing else in the world. Society may have decided it’s bad for us, but we know better. Caffeine, as well as the high concentration of antioxidants, triggers the release of dopamine by cancelling out free radicals in the body. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter which helps brain cells to regulate emotions and body movement. Extra dopamine in the system can reduce anxiety and stress, and keep the central nervous system functioning well. Drinking coffee can also protect against Alzheimer’s by decreasing brain production of an abnormal protein called beta-amyloid, which partly causes the disease. Coffee also raises epinephrine, the adrenaline chemical in our bodies.

WINE

Indulging in a glass of wine after a hard day is very common. Red wine is high in the powerful antioxidant resveratrol. Not only can it boost feel good brain chemicals, it can also boost cell function, increase energy, protect against hearing loss and aid in weight loss. Resveratrol can also preserve muscle fibre that may otherwise be lost by muscle inactivity, so if you’re having a lazy day or week, red wine could help maintain those hard earned muscles. Pinot Noir is known to have the highest concentration of resveratrol, because of the grapes thin skin. Another great benefit of wine is the high concentration of flavonoids in the grapes. This chemical reduces the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) which form as a by-product of oxygen metabolization. When page 44 | the stylish life magazine

exposed to UV rays they can kill skin cells. The flavonoids slow down the formation of these ROS’s which can increase the skins natural UV protection and help prevent sunburns.

BEER

The amount of antioxidants in beer is actually quite similar to those found in wine. Beer has different flavonoids from the barley and hops, but still with a similar affect. The polyphenols, a form of antioxidants found in beer, are linked with the reduction of cardiovascular risks such as heart disease and stroke. Beer also has silicon, which can help to increase bone mineral density. Dark beer like Guinness, has all of these benefits plus much more antioxidants than light beer, as well as high levels of iron.

DARK CHOCOLATE

Dark chocolate contains resveratrol as well, which among many other benefits can boost endorphin and serotonin levels which are linked to feelings of happiness. It is so high in antioxidants it can actually increase skin health as well as make it more resistant to harmful UV rays, just like red wine. The cocoa phenols found in dark chocolate are known to help lower blood pressure. This tasty snack also contains theobromine which can reduce a cough, sometimes better than over the counter medication. Tryptophan is another blissful chemical found in dark chocolate, it brings on happy feelings by increasing the amount of serotonin in the brain.

ICE CREAM

If the cheap, imitation ice cream can be avoided, real ice cream has many health benefits that can make us feel good about indulging. The calcium in ice cream soothes PMS, reduces bloat and helps resolve mood swings. On top of that, calcium also reduces the risk of osteoporosis as well as aids in weight loss, since low calcium in the body causes fat cells to enlarge and store more fat. Ice cream is also a source of protein, and vitamins A, B2, B12, D and K. Vitamins B2 and B12 are great for metabolism and breaking down fats, and also hinder hangovers by metabolizing the alcohol in our systems faster. These two vitamins are not stored by the body so need to be replenished regularly. One thing all of these indulgences have in common is the amount of nutrients that promote blissful feelings and stable moods. On top of the many antioxidants, there are numerous other health benefits to these everyday indulgences. This just goes to show, when our bodies crave a certain indulgence, we need something from it. No longer do we need to feel bad about indulging, as long as we don’t overindulge we can be happy about reaping the health benefits while enjoying life’s little pleasures.

drink

happy hour

Green Envy • 2 oz. Square One Organic Cucumber Vodka • Equal parts basil, peeled & sliced cucumber & celery, totaling an ounce or so after crushed • Splash of soda water Muddle the basil, cucumber & celery together and add to a shaker. Pour in the Square One Cucumber Vodka & shake well. Strain the mixture over ice & serve in a tall glass. Top off with soda water & garnish with a thin, unpeeled slice of cucumber. If you’re familiar with both the differences and similarities between a red sangria and a white sangria, I would dare say this drink is the white version of a Bloody Mary. Very cool and very refreshing. The celery gives it a very flavorful but not overly rich compliment.

happy hour

drink

The Deluxe

• 2 oz. Patrón Tequila • 1 oz. St. Germain • Elderflower Liqueur • Fresh strawberries • Fresh basil • Splash of fresh orange juice • Splash of fresh lime juice • Kosher salt

The Bramble |

• 1 part Nolet’s Gin • 3 parts champagne • Splash of freshly squeezed lemon juice • 1 oz. fresh blackberries • Pinch of fresh mint leaves Muddle the berries and mint together and add to a shaker. Add the gin and lemon juice and shake well. Pour over ice and top off with champagne. Garnish with skewered whole blackberries. Fruity but not overwhelmingly sweet. The juniper in the gin balances out the fruit tones nicely.

Line the rim of a margarita glass with kosher salt. In a separate bowl, muddle the strawberries and basil together, enough to equal about an ounce or two once crushed and add to your shaker. Add the rest of the ingredients & shake well. Strain over ice and serve in a margarita glass. Garnish with a lime wedge. A lively and slightly sweeter twist to the traditional Margarita.

The Tryst

• 1 part St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur • 1 part Absolut Vodka • 1 oz. fresh strawberries • 1 oz. fresh raspberries • Splash of lemon juice • Splash of cranberry juice Muddle the two berries together and pour into a shaker. Add the St. Germain, the Absolut, a splash of lemon and top off with a bit of cranberry juice. Garnish with a thin slice of strawberry. Quite fruity, but not overwhelmingly so. The lemon & cranberry give this a nice tangy finish.

Ménage à Trois | • 1 part Grey Goose L’Orange Vodka • 1 part Chartreuse • 1 part St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur Mix equal parts of all three in a shaker, mix well, and serve on the rocks. Top off with a spritz of soda water if desired. Garnish with a thin slice of orange. Simple but sensuous and surprisingly smooth despite it’s strength. Very French, indeed.

Conception...

There’s An App For That! BY: LG DAVIDSON

Most women in first world countries today are tech savvy. We have all of the information we need available at our fingertips, anytime we want. We can learn how to change a tire, do our banking and even order dinner online. It is no surprise that women turn to websites, forums and smartphone apps for information about how they can increase their chances of becoming pregnant sooner. Women can find online support networks with other wishful moms to be, share insights, track their cycles and compare early pregnancy symptoms. As a curious woman, about to embark on my own journey to parenthood, I wondered, “how helpful are these websites and smartphone apps?” With the help of my own soul searching journal entries and the advice of some insightful women, I learned the hard way, that for me, the tech savvy approach is more like a one way ticket to the crazy house than an informational superhighway to poopy diaper bliss. It all started with some innocent browsing online. I clicked the search button and my world opened up to an endless list of online resources for a savvy woman like me. From diagrams, products, forums and medical journal articles, to old wives tales and obsessive blogs, I could find it all on the topic of making a baby. I even came across a video blog of a woman who shared way too much information about how her flatulence could be a product of a very early pregnancy, or the deli meat she ate at lunch. Somewhere along the way, I found a popular smartphone app which after ovulation required charting body temperatures each morning. After taking and recording morning temperatures, a journal entry would often follow. JANUARY 12 CYCLE DAY 19 Is it possible to feel anything just 3-5 days past ovulation? I have read about some women online who swear they ‘knew’ right away. I know my own

health

body, I am sure what I am feeling is it... I think. UGH that’s what I thought last month. FEBRUARY 17 CYCLE DAY 26 This is killing me! I just want a positive test now! I feel tired. I feel different. I swear I have had to urinate more often than usual, and what the heck is that smell?! FEBRUARY 22 CYCLE DAY 1 I hate my fat, useless, ugly body! This bag of flesh has never been particularly skinny or as fit as I would like. And this body is far from being graceful, or good at many sports! Now this body can’t even do what it is biologically meant to do! It betrayed me. FEBRUARY 23 CYCLE DAY 2 Why is my husband not as sad and disappointed as I am? It’s so damn easy to be the guy in this situation, all he needs to do is blast off when I say go! He swears he thinks I am having psychotic episodes every 28 days. APRIL 3 Clarity. Peace. Comfort with myself. It was not easy, but I took some time out from all of the technology associated with trying to conceive. It’s liberating to finally surrender control over something that as much as we may try, humans ultimately cannot control anyway. As months passed, a patterned thought process began to present itself throughout some journal entries. I am not here to say that online forums and smartphone apps are a bad thing. For many women, they have been successful tools that were a part of a happy, healthy journey to conception. However, for some, these technologies are something they obsess about. For me, it contributed to a negative thought process and feeling betrayed by my own body. I encourage women who use these technologies to be savvy about the effect they can have. Check in and make sure these tools are still helping and not upsetting. Sometimes it is better to follow the advice of many mothers before us and relax, have some fun and let nature do the rest. the stylish life magazine | page 49

budget travel

BUDGET

TRAVEL

101 BY JENNA MATTHEWS

When we think of travel, our mind instantly goes to our wallets. How much is it going to cost? Can I afford it? Is it really worth the debt? We want the authentic, cultural experience without the impact on our bank accounts. What we don’t seem to embrace is the knowledge that travel doesn’t have to be about forking over thousands of dollars for two weeks at the same beach, the same food and the same crowd of people. We forget about that country’s culture, about authentic cuisine, and about truly getting away from it all by immersing ourselves in a whole new way of life. So many of us avoid travel simply because we think we can’t afford it. But with these simple tricks and an open mind, travelling on an extremely tight budget is not only possible, but a life changing experience that’s not just reserved for backpackers and young twentysomething’s. PLAN AHEAD Making smart investments prior to departing on a trip can save heaps of money in the long run. Investing in a good travel insurance plan is probably the smartest thing you can do. Nothing kills a budget like health bills and lost luggage replacement costs. For short term travel, try RBC Insurance’s Deluxe plan, and for longer term try World

travel

Nomads. Another smart move is investing in a small travel stove to cook some of your own meals. Eating out every day can be taxing on your waistline and your wallet. Save up for the trip and use a prepaid travel card or pay cash while traveling. Putting a trip on credit can not only be stressful, but can also make the trip much more expensive once the interest charges begin. Another way to help avoid the use of credit cards is using travel points like Air Miles or Aeroplan points to purchase flights and other means of transportation. Be flexible in your plans. Doing lots of research is beneficial, but don’t let it dictate your vacation. Last minute deals, red-eye flights, long layovers and off-season travel can be the difference between regular price and a great deal. If you find a free or cheap place to stay, be flexible to stay there longer, or vice versa, leave an expensive place early to find better deals elsewhere. Learn about the culture. Knowing a bit of the language and culture will not only make communication easier, it will also give you local knowledge and tips on how to avoid tourist traps. BE CREATIVE Embrace alternative forms of transportation and lodging. Flying, renting a car and taking a taxi may be convenient, but can really add up financially. Try some different forms of transportation to keep the money in your wallet. Try renting a scooter, taking an overnight bus or train, or joining a ride-share. Hostels are also a great alternative to pricey hotel rooms. Many of them even offer private double share rooms with a lock on the door, priced much less than a standard hotel room.

travel

budget travel

Take photos as souvenirs. As much as we love the little dust collectors, souvenirs and collectibles can be expensive and heavy, sometimes leading to extra luggage costs. A nice photo mug or calendar will make grandma just as happy as a trinket. Try Snapfish. com or your local photo centre. Stay at accommodations that provide breakfast. Eating a large portion of the complimentary breakfast and a small, healthy lunch will save money on two meals per day. After all, breakfast should be our biggest meal of the day according to many nutritionists. For dinner; be social. Enjoy a potluck meal with fellow travelers and your fancy new pocket stove. Finding free activities is easy to do if you know where to look. Tourist information sites always know the local secrets and are usually willing to share. Trade instead of buying. The old adage, “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure,” really holds true while traveling. Trading instead of buying is a great way to get what you need. A spare map for a beer anyone? LIVE LIKE THE LOCALS There has to be a secret to living in paradise, and if anyone knows it, it’s the locals. Eat where the locals eat, play where the locals play. If you have the time, try a working holiday visa

page 54 | the stylish life magazine

or a working visa for your choice destination. Why not make money travelling? If your trip is shorter term, try to volunteer for accommodation costs. Offer to clean up garbage for camp fees, or do farm work in the mornings for free accommodations. Visit farmers markets instead of grocery stores. Not only is the food much healthier, you have a chance to barter and lower the price even more. This will also give you a chance to learn the culture through talking to locals rather than trying to learn through tourist traps. Keeping in touch with loved ones while travelling can be very expensive. If you bring along a cheap unlocked cell phone and buy a traveler’s pay as you go SIM card when you get there, you can take advantage of the local calling plans without having to pay for the high priced roaming fees. Spend more of your time talking, without having to spend more of what’s in your purse. The best piece of travel advice above all else, from traveler to fellow traveler, is don’t rush. You are traveling to enjoy yourself, to get away from it all and to gain new experiences. So enjoy every minute. Rushing makes for poor, snap decisions and incomplete memories. Try your best to be in the moment and take it all in. Slow down, breath and enjoy.

jessie ware in concert

Devotion to the Wildest Moments

Jessie Ware in Concert BY DALE FRASER

Jessie Ware is the real deal, and she wants you to know it. The 28 year-old South London born singer songwriter gave her first Toronto audience exactly what they came for and then some. Caught somewhere between the cool of early 90’s Sade and Jessie J with elocution lessons, Ware has a confidence and musical intelligence not often found in young pop stars.

Ware opened the show with “Devotion”, a song well steeped in laid back R&B tradition. While staying true to the synth heavy genre of the album, the very capable band opted for dirtier, bass heavy grooves in the live application. Casually leaning on her mic stand, “Devotion” was a slow climb to the last half of the song where she laid it all out, as if to say “in case you wondered.”

Ms. Ware brought the grace of a seasoned veteran, interacting with the audience, even recognizing two people who attended her show the night before at Webster Hall in New York City. Often British pop diva’s “du jour” feel the need to bring “spectacle” across the Atlantic and their raw talent is lost in the flashing lights and MacBook generated tracks. Ms. Ware opted to rely on her vocal chords and charm (and a little help from an incredibly tight quartet.)

Ware paid tribute to those who came before and inspired her on the often referenced 1978 Bobby Caldwell cover “What You Won’t Do for Love.” Ware sings “boy you knock me out” in a cleverly disguised shout out to Aaliyah’s “Age Aint Nothin’ But a Number” and Tatyana Ali’s “Boy You Knock Me Out”, that samples the horns.

The highlight was definitely “Swan Song”, a swelling ballad in which Ware is crying out to be heard. It was haunting and ethereal, everything a song of its nature should be. Yes, Jessie Ware is the real deal, and now a small percentage of the Toronto population knows it.

the heart of the circus

In Windsor Ontario, Sky Society brings you high-flying aerial dance and acrobatics that showcase courage, strength, and flexibility. Choreographed to fun music and always high in the air, Sky Society members perform intricate poses, spins, twists and drops. If you’ve ever wondered what it takes to become an aerial artist, Christie Bezaire, a founding member of Sky Society explains, “To me, circus arts are a wonderful combination of artistic expression & athleticism. It’s a way for me to get in an awesome work out, while expressing myself. I was never so great at dance on the ground, but I seem to have a knack for it in the air. Nowadays, when I fall in love with a new song, all I can think about is how I’m going to incorporate it into a routine. Learning circus has shown me patience, courage & strength, and has proven to me that anything is possible.”

Performers of Sky Society, Amy Garant, Saifee G, and Christie Bezaire of Windsor Ontario, along with some Detroit Michigan artists, have created an amazing, “twelve act” upcoming event, called The Heart Of Circus. products channel surfing the internet

Channel Surfing the Internet BY RACHEL ACNIMER

People are finding it harder and harder these days to balance the work and pleasure in their lives. For many, work tends to cling with them even after they leave their workplaces, and carries itself into their homes. With this happening more often, it’s difficult to find the time to sit back and catch a favourite show on the tube. However, when you do get the time, what you want to watch might not always be on. This then begs the question: why do you pay for the ever increasing costs of cable if you can’t watch what you want, when you want? Although it may seem daunting at first, there are ways to cut the cord on your cable and still get lots of great content to watch, all through the web. With many internet ready devices already being plugged directly into your TV sets, you won’t have a reason to throw out that new big screen TV either. Here’s a few internet video streaming products that will put that extra buck or two back in your pocket: NETFLIX By now you’ve probably heard of Netflix, but many still haven’t gotten around to giving it a try. Netflix is a subscription based video streaming service that has tons of content. Due to its growing size in the market place, Netflix has deals in place to have one of the most robust libraries available for you to stream. It includes both TV shows and movies, as well more recently its own collection of Netflix only series not found anywhere else. All of the content is included as part of the monthly price you pay, so there is no need to worry about any additional fees racking up. Newer TVs often have Netflix integrated directly into them, but you can also use your PC, tablets and other mobile devices to watch whatever you like, wherever you are. Netflix usually provides a one month free trial, but once you give it a test drive, you’ll want to keep it. Be sure to rate movies and shows you watch so it can give

Chef Dale Mackay’s Recipe For Thai Curry Cream Mussels Ingredients: Thai Cream • 1 lb Mussels (per person) cleaned • 1” lemon grass • 2 cloves garlic • 1 shallot, chopped • 1 tablespoon of pink, black, white peppercorns • 1/2 tablespoon of fennel seed • 100 ml white wine • 350 ml cream • 1 thyme sprig • 1 kaffir lime leaf • 2 tablespoons curry spice blend (med hot) • 1 tablespoon butter Garnish • 1 sliced garlic • 1 tablespoon of diced shallot • White wine • Butter • Cilantro, chopped • Lime wedges or halves

Directions: In a medium-high heated All-Clad Stockpot roast off the aromatics. Add the thyme and the kaffir lime and spices add butter and curry spice. Deglaze with the white wine and then add the cream. Reduce the cream by 20%. Remove to a separate heatproof bowl to cool and reserve.

page 70 | the stylish life magazine

Assembly: Add the shallots, garlic and a nub of butter to the All-Clad Stockpot over medium heat. Add the mussels and then de-glaze with white wine. Cover to let steam. Once the mussels are open (discard any that remain closed), add 2 tablespoons of the cream swirl (per person or lb of mussels) and shake about, add the cilantro. Serve with a lime wedge (plain or caramelized).

Serve with a gorgeous bread or crispy fries with which to soak up the broth. This recipe makes enough Thai Cream to serve 6-12 persons. The depth of the All-Clad pot and the easy-pour/carry handle is perfect for serving this recipe family style – right at the table.
