Get The Look: Holiday Beauty Looks You’ll Love

Trend Shopping 2014

Trend Shopping 2014 By Glen Peloso

Do you ever have those days where you feel old? The High Point Furniture Market in North Carolina taught me that we do not have to refer to ourselves as old, but rather as “reclaimed” or “vintage”. This makes us perfectly trendy again. Recycled, up- cycled, vintage, reclaimed, or newly made to look old, were apparent in every market show room. High Point is a place that is home to some of the best known brands of furniture in North America. Brands, like: Hooker, Stanley, Century Furniture and Bernhardt. It is the spot that all retailers come to source items for their stores. Vintage items were common in every one of the show rooms. Some sellers created items that resembled their vintage counterparts at varying price points to suit every budget in the market place.

Sticking with that vintage feel, the shapes and details of the sixties are back.

home

more art than wall, and book shelves that were layered. Just about every piece of furniture offered a little extra detail in the knobs or mouldings, button tufting or studded details. The feeling of luxury seemed to be apparent throughout; however, the architectural lines of the deco period were less apparent. Details were present on every table, wood framed chair, cocktail table, bed and dresser. Combinations of wood types and colours of painted finished woods were also apparent. One of the biggest notable changes was gold replacing chrome. Gold now has the feeling of antiqued leafing as opposed to being bright and garish. Other metals in warm tones were seen, however, gold was first in the pack. Trends are not completely set by the furniture and accessories market, but they give you a clear idea of what will be available in local retail stores. Learning how to use trends appropriately is reason enough to hire a professional, but it is also useful to know what the trends are. Fashion retail windows will also give you hints of where the market is trending, so you can tell your spouse that you were “doing research” not shopping!

It was common to see side boards and entertainment units that had sixties detail, including the angled inset legs and star burst appliqués in the middle of doors. This same detail was found in wall art, hanging lamps, and chandeliers. Vintage classics like Eames chairs and, the wishbone are still being displayed and have been in production and popular since they were first constructed in nineteen forty four. I was surprised to see the two- tiered side table with the upper tier cut back. This shape is specific to the time period, but now made of wood not arborite.

Various shades of blue have returned perhaps because they are so well paired with greys. One of the showrooms featured a room that was entirely painted navy blue with white furniture, and it looked spectacular. Blue was a theme throughout the showrooms in various shades and tones that went all the way from robin’s egg blue which was a fabric on a sofa, to black blue of some wall coverings. You will find that blue is an accent colour in many items, such as, accessories, throw pillows, carpets and seating. In wooden pieces like wall units or bar cabinets, blue was present as the total colour or as an accent.

If the devil was in the details, then there were a lot of devilish designs. The interiors of drawers and cabinets were as well finished and detailed as the exteriors. Drawers were leather lined and shelves were finished with an in- laid wood or painted blue edge. Seeing the inside of cabinets was as fun as seeing the outside. I had expected to see a stronger art deco feel in the designs, although there was an indirect nod to the period: an oversized mirror with a large hall table sitting in front of it, wall art hung as if there was REMARK | the stylish life magazine |

Victoria Sorkin was born and raised in Eastern Ukraine and has been creative since childhood. Growing up, she was influenced by the unique architecture in Turkmenistan and the culture and historic landmarks of Israel. In 2009, while on maternity leave with her second child, she decided to take up beading after her husband gifted her with the necessary tools. With only one session, Victoria immediately fell in love with its complexity, color matching and techniques. Despite her degree in finance, soon beading would be her passion and her career. Victoria and her family moved to Canada in 2010 for a better and more peaceful life. Shortly thereafter, disaster struck. Her husband fell ill with a terminal disease, but still urged her to share her creativity with the world. While in treatment, her husband developed her brand and her online business. When the time was right, Victoria followed her passion and channelled something positive into something worthwhile. Victoria’s decision to put something positive into the world despite the difficult times her family was experiencing appears to have paid off -today Victoria’s husband has a clean bill of health! her techniques and experimenting with different jewelry materials such as beads, gemstones, Swarovski crystals and soutache- a cording material seen on military uniforms. Her jewelry has been described as wearable art that will never go out of style. Nature, fashion, people and personal experiences are all influences that help Victoria create her masterpieces. Her design process starts off with a sketch on tissue paper or her sketch book, then she decides on colors and the use of stones or beads. The technical process of sewing and beading comes last. She says “the final creation is always slightly different from what it was in my mind. Each piece depends on the emotional situation I am in at the point of creation.”

Author Melanie Benjamin takes us on voyage into the unknown world of the woman behind one of the most famous men of the early 20th century. We follow Anne’s journey as she marries one of the most famous men in the world and is suddenly thrust into the throws of fame and everything that comes with it.

Benjamin gives a wildly fascinating look into a life full of mystery, heartbreak, hidden secrets and life changing revelations. It offers a different view of a well known hero and the devastating price of that fame that came along with being the victim of the “crime of the century”. Early in the book readers will be shocked to learn a lifelong secret that changed the whole family forever. From the tragic loss of their first child, to their Nazi sympathies, Benjamin does not fail to keep the reader engaged. Benjamin is incredibly in-

When the Boss is the Bully in the Workplace

When the Boss is the Bully in the Workplace By LG Davidson

Bullying of students by other students in schools has been a familiar topic in the news recently. Sadly, this trend is not limited to school hallways and playgrounds. According to SafeSupervisor. com, between 35 and 40 percent of workers in North America report being bullied at work. Bullying can be described as repeated patterns of negative behavior that is deliberately meant to intimidate, humiliate, offend and/or degrade another person. It can sometimes reach a physically violent capacity, however it more often takes the form of psychological and emotional warfare between two or more people. Traditionally, people bully others in the workplace in an attempt to further their own careers or accomplish a personal goal that often leads to professional accolades, financial gains or increased social status. In some cases, these degrading words and actions are meant to deflect attention away from the perpetrator’s own lack of knowledge of the job, competence within their own roll or overall self-confidence.

Tactics of a Workplace Bully When the workplace bully is also the boss, it can sometimes go unnoticed and ignored. Employees assume that their supervisor uses a harsh style of leadership and get so caught up in trying to please their bully that they can lose sight of what really is acceptable or unacceptable in an employee/supervisor relationship. Other employees choose to ignore the bully, for fear of being dismissed. It is important for workers to stay informed about the tactics used by some supervisor bullies and what supports are in place for them if they notice some or all of the following:

Spreading rumors or talking about other employees’ mistakes or incompetence in front of their colleagues.

• 28

Making unreasonable demands of employees, such as

| the stylish life magazine | REMARK

unattainable project deadlines, setting them up for failure.

Constantly changing work expectations part way through a project, and bending rules to suit individual situations, then getting angry when asked for clarification.

Taking credit for their employees’ ideas and accomplishments.

Laying blame on employees who simply followed directions, when a project is unsuccessful.

These tactics take a toll on individuals as well as the organizations as a whole. Poor workplace morale, an increase in sick days taken by workers, regular tardiness, taking a stress leave, low productivity and high staff turnover are often indicators for an organization that some internal changes need to be made.

When the Boss is the Bully in the Workplace

What Can You Do To Deal With It? Most workplaces have an anti-bullying policy, and if not, there is no better time than now to ask some questions and find out how the organization can get one put in place. Some people are comfortable enough to face their bullying boss and express the words or behaviours that impacted them or their work negatively. In most cases however, it would be best to have these conversations with the Human Resources Department. Even good supervisors can have bad days, weeks or even months, and will take the constructive feedback to heart. Getting a supervisor to recognize the impacts they have on the wellbeing of their employees and the organization can bring positive changes, even to the nastiest of work environments. In a perfect world, this is all it would take, but sometimes employees find better success by implementing some new behaviours of their own. Asking for clear

lifestyle

direction from the beginning of a project and even asking for it in writing is one way to curb unrealistic or changing expectations from popping up midway through a project. The paper trail is a great tool to fall back on when a manager tries to surprise an employee with a new direction or outlandish request. Do not act as a listening ear when the supervisor begins to talk negatively about other employees or even other departments. Without an audience, there is no validation for a supervisor’s poor attitudes and the employees set a precedence of respect and positivity for everyone in the workplace. Lastly, know when to head for the door and consider working for an organization that supports your positive attitude and respects the wellbeing and satisfaction of their employees. Your mental health and peace of mind are worth it.

Your Break-up Survival Guide

Your Break-up Survival Guide By Jenna Matthews

Falling in love and having a relationship with that one special person is the best feeling many of us have ever experienced. However, when things go south it can feel like our entire world has come to an end. When you suddenly find yourself nursing a broken heart, here’s how to deal.

Let Yourself Feel Every Emotion Take a couple days off to be by yourself and feel every emotion as they come and go. If these intense emotions get pushed down they might come out in very awkward and unintentional ways. Let yourself go; cry, scream at the wall, eat copious amounts of comfort food, throw things, blast death metal, sit in silence, do whatever you need to do to release the emotions fully. Journaling is a great way to fully feel and release these emotions. Write down everything you are feeling, ending with why this breakup is a good thing and how you are better off.

Take Care Of Yourself Stress affects the body just as much as it affects the mind. Treat yourself as if you are getting over a flu; eat well, get lots of rest and reduce stress in every aspect of your life. When your body is healthy, your mind will follow suit. When you are ready, get some exercise to bring yourself out of the fog. Even if it’s just a quick walk down the street or a living room yoga session, exercising will release endorphins and help you feel more like you.

Decoding The First Date By Melissa Grosser

The process of dating can be a stressful, nerve wrecking, hit or miss situation that the majority of people dread in the beginning. When you meet someone or are set up with “the one”, at least according to your mutual friends, you may approach the first date as a job rather than a fun opportunity to interact with an individual who is fresh and new to your world. Instead of treating a first date like a chore, transform it into a fun activity – a chance to experience something new and feeling good as you do it.

Setting The Date To gauge what your date is like, pick up the phone and have a conversation for a few minutes. Get a feel for the person and start to learn what they like. If the conversation flows, dive right in and set up the in-person date. Skip the typical coffee shop – try to find an interactive activity where you two can talk and experience something fun. Rather than experiencing something that feels like a job interview, this is a better way to determine chemistry and common interests when you are relaxed and having fun.

Pre-Date Prep No matter what the background is on the first date – whether you are excited or not, it is important to put your best foot forward. Once you establish where the date will take place, make sure your wardrobe selection is appropriate for the activity. In terms of the actual look, put forth effort so you appear put together and you are showing off your physical attributes with confidence. Let your best self shine through to your date without overdoing yourself. Aside from your attire, keep your mind open and clear. No pre-date research is necessary. Go into it and learn about your date first hand.

Your Break-up Survival Guide

Call Your Girlfriends Your girlfriends are probably the best people to talk to in this situation. They may tell you every reason why you should have broken up long ago, they may offer terrible advice about what you need to do right away, or they may just sit and cry with you. Either way, spending time with people that understand and care about you will help you feel loved and understood. More than likely, they will get you laughing.

Keep Your Distance As much as you feel the need to call, looking into the past will not help you heal, it will only bring up those emotions that you have already allowed yourself to deal with. Delete his number from your phone so you aren’t tempted. If there is a place you know he will be stay far away from it. A “chance” run in is never a good idea, and will be very awkward for anyone nearby. If you share a favourite place, be the bigger person and find a new one.

Try Something New Whether it’s something small like a new coffee shop, or big like joining a rock climbing gym, giving yourself something new in your life will change up your usual routine and give you something exciting to focus on. This is also a great way to get out of the mentality of wanting to stay home and get you back into the swing of meeting new people.

Take A Trip Whether you take a long weekend to visit a friend in Vancouver or go to an all inclusive resort down south for a week, getting out of your every day routine to pamper yourself and try new things

lifestyle

will certainly get you out of that funk. While you’re away, immerse yourself in the culture. Try something new, join a group outing, meet new people. Travelling to a new place is the perfect way to get out of your shell and get comfortable meeting new people again. You may even learn something new about yourself.

Immerse Yourself In Your Work Taking on extra projects and working extra hours is a great way to distract yourself from those nagging left over feelings of missing him. Now that you have allowed yourself time to deal with the true emotions, throwing yourself into your work will stop you from dwelling on or over analysing the breakup. Not only that, your boss and coworkers will be impressed with your drive and you will feel a great sense of pride and accomplishment.

Get Under Someone To Get Over Someone This can be very controversial, and by no means does this mean go and sleep with the first guy who shows any interest. Please make good choices, but you are single now- embrace it! Get dressed up, go out, flirt and kiss a few frogs. You will find your prince eventually, but this part of your life shouldn’t be about finding Mr. Right, it should be about enjoying Mr. Right Now. If you feel like you are someone that will get attached quickly, please ignore this advice until you know you can separate lust from love. Going through a breakup can be one of the most difficult times in our lives and dealing with it can feel similar to dealing with a death. Nadine Ellis interviewed By Emily Kline We were lucky enough to get up close and personal with the gorgeous Nadine Ellis. Nadine was once part of the iconic dance-pop ensemble The Pussy Cat Dolls and now stars in Queen Latifah’s hit show “Let’s Stay Together”. Keep reading to hear Nadine make her Remark! How did you get into acting? I’ve always been a performer and acting was another way of expressing myself. I moved to LA and started studying acting at night with dance as my day job. With preparation, angels on my shoulder and God leading charge, I started booking. What do you love more, Acting or Dancing? It’s what I would assume having children would be like; I love them immensely in different ways. How did you land the role of Stacy on “Let’s Stay Together”? Preparation met opportunity. It was an audition like so many before, but this time I got the call that I was the one. And it has been incredible ever since!!! What is your favourite part about working on LST? Learning and getting to play in a consistent environment. I love what I do and it’s nice making a living while doing it. Who would you like to work with in the future? Idris Elba and I worked together in a series of Toyota commercials that had a spy element. I would love the opportunity to work together on a feature in the same genre. What book are you reading at the moment? Malcolm Gladwell’s “Outlier’s”. Better late than never! What are your top three beauty products? La Mer eye cream, my flat iron and water. Who is your favourite designer? Elie Saab, Marchesa and anyone who understands how to make a women feel and look amazing. Who is your celebrity crush? Idris Elba is still my reigning champion. What is your favourite movie, and why? I hate being limited so I rarely have a favourite of just one thing. I love “The Color Purple” and “The Shawshank Redemption” because they’re both incredible stories of perseverance and survival. And “Love Actually” because of its “anything is possible-ness”. What is next for you, anything exciting in the horizon? I have a film that will be available on DVD called “Four of Hearts” about a married couple. I play the wife opposite Darrin Henson. They’ve lost the fire in their relationship and “open” their marriage for a night. Craziness ensues! It’s a fun flyon-the-wall ride. What is your stylish “Remark”? My “Remark” is listening to my dayto-day sense of style. I believe as women we can walk into a closet full of clothes and not find anything to wear because we’re not the same from one day to the next. REMARK | the stylish life magazine |

cover This fun-loving, bubbly charmer goes by the name of Laura Bell Bundy. She’s a women who does it all: Singer/ Songwriter (“Kentucky Dirty”released Nov 5th), Actress (Hart of Dixie, Anger Management) and Broadway superstar (Legally Blonde, Hairspray), to name just a few. How does she do it all? Well, for one thing, the energy coming from this girl could light up a small town. She was definitely a bright and cheery break from the overcast day in Los Angeles when we met. Within minutes of her sitting in the make up chair, she had everyone in the room laughing with her impressions and funny stories. Laura, a beautiful southern charmer sat down before our cover shoot and told us a bit about herself and her growing career. We understand you had a stage debut at the age of nine, so you knew from a young age you wanted to be an entertainer? LBB: My mom knew…You know what? I knew. When you’re a kid it’s just having fun right? Instead of board games or T-ball in the backyard, which I still did all that stuff, I was more into the theatrics of playing. Also I was kind of little bit of a clown. Like the first time we ever went to New York when I was six. When I came back from New York, I didn’t come back talking about how great “Cats” was, I was dressing up like homeless people, I was doing people’s accents and mimicking everything that I heard. I also would mimic recordings. I thought that was the only way you could sing was to sound exactly like the person singing. It was hard for me to find my real voice. How did your mom handle all your energy? I was never diagnosed with ADD but I’m pretty sure I have it. My mom channeled that and put me into dance, singing, children’s theater, clogging, gymnastics and tennis. She was like “Lets keep this five year old off the streets.” Then my mom had this opportunity when I was that age to 44

bring me to New York because I won a pageant. There was this Phil Donahue show and they told us it was featuring pageant winners and their parents, but really it was an expose. They had me walk the runway and talk to them. But they were lambasting the parents. I remember at five years old feeling this really uncomfortable feeling like something was wrong. I actually never talk about this. That was such a scarring moment that it felt embarrassing, I never did a pageant again and it was put out of my mind until I could see the comedy of it. There is a reason that everything happens, so the good thing about that was it got us to New York and my mom took me to Ford Modeling agency. And that’s how it all began! And so young when you started and yet you turned out so stable. Where did this level of maturity come from? Mom? Dad? My mom was strict in certain ways, she brought her Kentucky catholic morals to New York City, and those were not adjusted. She also encouraged my studies, my playing, and there were rules. My dad was like “grades have to be good if we were keeping this up”. My mom was very nurturing, there was never a day that went by that I did not feel loved. And my dad, same with him. If you had the chance to ask your idols (Reba, Dolly, Carol Burnett) anything when you were younger, what would it be? I would probably have asked “What did you come up against and how did you deal with that as an artist?” “Were there times when you felt like this isn’t going to work or no one is going to accept [you]?” I’m more interested in how they dealt with their trials.

cover So if a girl with stars in her eyes asked you those questions, what would you say? Did you come up against any trials? Oh Always! A career in the entertainment industry is not for the weak at heart. Takes a lot of courage. I think as a musician, you have to identify what is your true voice and what is the energy you project. Then you have to own it and not be afraid of it. There is a very fine line in music between commerce and creativity. You have to straddle that line if you are going to be successful. I’m committed to doing something different because that’s where I get my joy otherwise … why [do it]? And I have to be courageous enough to put that out there and get things from naysayers. If I’m doing something different I can’t go about it the same way that everybody else is. I have to be unique in the way that I market it as well. And that’s how I find my audience. How do I put it? Talking country artists now… [They’re] all on the highway in a traffic jam trying to get on the billboard chart. But [by] doing what they do, they are the best at what they do, which is commercial country. If I’m doing something different, I’m going to be left in the back of that traffic jam. Or I could just go take the open road next to it. It’s a little bit windier, it’s Mulholland, but I’m going get there and I’m going to be less frustrated. It might take me longer, but I have the wind in my hair and I won’t worry about being stuck in the traffic and being stuck on the same road as them. I would much rather be driving a longer distance on an open road then stuck in a traffic jam. What is your REMARK? Stop putting fruit in salad!

Colour Philosophy

If

there is one element that challenges people when they try to decorate, it is colour. Not knowing how to use it correctly can make or break your room. Colour is one of the first things people see when they enter a room. It can be on the walls, furniture or the accessories. It brings instant mood, style and atmosphere to the room, while also enhancing the architectural and design elements. Finding inspiration for using colour in a space can come from many things- a beautiful silk gown, a piece of natural rock or wood, or the painting or piece of art that you love. This can be your “jumping off point” and provide you with the color foundation necessary to build your room. Being inspired starts your journey into creating a beautiful and well thought out room. All colours can be changed or enhanced to create nuances of colour through tinting, toning and shading.

Paul Semkuley, principal of re:source lifestyles, a Toronto-based Interior Stylist, combines his love of art, fashion and design to offer a unique decorating point of view. Tint: Any colour with white added creates soft, youthful and soothing colours. Tone: Any colour with black and white added creates a “greyed down” colour. These are the most pleasing to the eye. They are complex, subtle and sophisticated. Shade: Any colour with black added creates deep, powerful and mysterious colours Choosing the right hue for your walls can take your room from calm and serene to bold and energetic. Painting a room is the easiest and most cost effective way to introduce change or simply update your surroundings. Wallpaper is also considered a colour treatment for walls and ceilings. It not only provides you with colour, but can also bring texture and pattern to a room or halllway. Consider it as a feature wall to create a focal point while adding an additional design element to the room. Advancing colours such as red, orange and bright yellow will make a room seem smaller and more intimate. Blue, green and violet are cool and soothing. In the right settings, colours can be mixed, coordinated, combined or juxtaposed to create a contrast that is pleasing and stimulating to the eyes and senses. Upholstering larger pieces of furniture with neutrals (not necessarily beige) gives you a clean foundation to build your room. One can easily update and change the colours of the room through the use of decorative pillows, glassware, ceramics, found objects and artwork. These all begin to add layers to your room, giving it a well curated and manicured esthetic. If you’re willing to take a risk, do one chair or smaller piece of furniture in the room to give it the unexpected “bang” of colour. With several tints, tones, and shades, there is myriad of colours to choose from. Draperies are also a great key element to any room, as they frame the windows. They can either be bold and patterned, which will provide additional drama to the room, or they can take a step back and be soft and similar to the wall colour, bringing a unified look to the room without bringing too much attention to them. Whatever colour you choose to work with, remember that it must please you and make you want to be in that room. Not all rooms need to be full of colour, nor do they need to be subtle and subdued. Take the one colour you love and start to build on it. And when you’re not thinking about it, throw in a colour you wouldn’t ever dream of… it might just be that colour that will bring you and your room to life! REMARK | the stylish life magazine |

Taking a Tongue-Lashing

The Art of Receiving Oral Sex By Lauren “Pants” Pantoliano

60

| the stylish life magazine | REMARK

Taking a Tongue-Lashing

I

picked up a great book recently and it has revolutionized my thoughts on giving and receiving oral sex. I love oral sex, but I definitely prefer P in V sex, so I was eager to rip through Blow Each Other Away: A Couple’s Guide to Sensational Oral Sex by Jaiya. I’ve always fancied myself a talented fellatio-provider; however, I love to learn new things, so I figured I’d walk away with some tips for rocking my lover’s world. I didn’t expect to get much out of the other side of things, since my sex partners have penises, not vaginas (most of the time), but as it turns out, I had a lot to learn about receiving. I love the feel of a face between my legs, but I don’t often orgasm from oral sex and tend to rush my sexual partners through the act to get to what I know will get me off. Until I read Jaiya’s book, I figured it was up to the giver to make the receiver orgasm, so when I didn’t, I would get frustrated and give up rather than being open to the experience and enjoying it. Now I realize that to truly enjoy oral sex, there are a few things I can do to help it along. Some of these things are not new to me, but there were some that I hadn’t considered that made so much sense. Here is ’s what I took away from the book: • Know your body. Masturbate and experiment with yourself so you know what spots and kinds of touches feel best; that way you can guide your lover in the right direction. • Breathe. Tension isn’t just felt in our necks and backs, but also in our vaginas. Loosen up and breathe as though you are in a yoga class. Oxygen not only fuels fires, but also orgasms. • Wash yourself. Well duh. A clean kitty housed in fresh nice panties is much more accommodating and allows your mind to not dwell on odor or possible panty stains. If a partner tries and you haven’t had a chance to do so, just excuse yourself for a quick birdbath. It will help to ease your mind and allow you to enjoy what’s happening down there. • Watch your diet. No amount of cleaning can truly mask a woman’s natural scent, and some foods cause that scent to be stronger than others. For your sake and your lover’s, avoid eating a lot of red meat and refined sugar, and limit your coffee intake to one or two a day. • Incorporate massage. It is a great way to get turned on prior to any sexual touching, and translates quite seamlessly to manual and oral sex. If you are having a hard time relaxing while your partner is ’s going down on you, think of it like a back massage. Enjoy the

health

sensations and allow yourself to relax all your muscles. Just don’t get so relaxed that you fall asleep. I hear people don’t like that… • Know that cunnilingus prepares the vagina for sexual intercourse. Sex feels so much better after being warmed up with a tongue, or tongue and finger combo. Giving into the first act rather than trying to rush to the finale only results in a bigger finale. • Orgasms are good for your health. Reason enough for me. • Play sexy music. I have a playlist called “make out” that includes all the music that turns me on, or I wish I had the lady-balls to strip to. Playing music that makes you want to fool around and gives your lover a rhythm to lick along to just makes good sense. • Check in. If it feels like your partner has been down there for awhile and you worry if it’s becoming uncomfortable, just ask. It’s thoughtful and helps to avoid situations where one of you just isn’t into it. • Be okay with not coming. I’m sure we’ve all had great sex where we didn’t orgasm. The same goes with oral sex. Just enjoy the feelings as they come (no pun intended) rather than willing the orgasm to happen. • Be vocal. When something feels good, be sure to express it through moans and words. Encouragement goes a long way and it’s much less awkward to talk about what feels good rather than talking about what feels not so good. The great thing about all the actions above is how easy they are to do. Jaiya’s book makes giving and receiving oral sex less intimidating and provides helpful steps, diagrams, and examples to assist. There are also a ton of great techniques that turned me on just by reading them. My copy of the book is so dog-eared I may as well have folded over the corners of the pages I didn’t want to try! I definitely encourage you to search out Blow Each Other Away or any of Jaiya’s other publications if you have trouble with oral sex, are looking to learn more about giving and receiving, or if you’re just interested in learning some new techniques. Until next time, keep it safe, keep it sexy; and when all else fails, keep it as a great story. — xox Pants

Planning the Perfect Valentine’s

Planning the Perfect Valentine’s Day Date By Melissa Grosser

Valentine’s Day, the holiday that celebrates love, is observed and enjoyed by many each year. However, the tough part is planning the perfect Valentine’s Day date. With changes in couples and, relationships this special day can be celebrated in many different ways with several great ideas.

If the location of your first date does not exist anymore, recreate the date with a similar meal or activity. If you saw a movie, create your own movie night, complete with your significant other’s favourite snacks. When you are married… Book a second honeymoon date. This does not have to be a full trip. Treat yourselves to a night away from home. Check into a resort up north, enjoy a hotel and dinner package in or out of the city, or get pampered together with a couple’s day at the spa (if you are unable to get away for an evening). On top of the perfect Valentine’s Day date comes the perfect Valentine’s Day present. It is a wonderful occasion to exchange gifts. However, it is nice to keep it simple and sentimental. 10 Strong Reasons to CrossFit

10 Strong Reasons to CrossFit

By Cheryl Willberg

CrossFit has been a steadily growing fitness trend over the past ten years. In the early days of CrossFit, you would have never thought the “Sport of Fitness to be broadcasted to an international audience on ESPN. CrossFit is being done by the young and old, and athletes and couch potatoes alike. Although with all of the exposure and popularity, there are many people who are still intimidated by what they see online or on television. Here are the top ten reasons why CrossFit will make this year your fittest yet.

keeps away those who are less committed. It also helps keep membership consistent, which is vital to good coaching.

friendships are formed this way, along with great business networking opportunities.

#7 Nutrition The CrossFit movement is known for embracing a very healthy and effective nutrition based lifestyle. You will benefit from a community that supports positive nutritional habits. It is effective to have people reinforcing your choices. Most CrossFit gyms will also have nutritional challenges to help make eating healthy more fun and social.

#3 Competitions CrossFit workouts are sometimes like minicompetitions. The ultimate competition is with yourself to see if you can do more than you did last week. This helps to foster an attitude that is based on personal performance and athletics. Athletes enjoy the benefits of a great looking body with all the fun of sports. If you are so inclined, there are many local CrossFit events and competitions to take your fitness further.

#6 Kids CrossFit is a wonderful way to bond with children. One of the premises of CrossFit is to get back the skill, flexibility and playfulness you had as a child. CrossFit gyms are really adult playgrounds that let you work on gymnastic skills, jumping, lifting and throwing.

#2 Coaching Great coaches who are constantly striving to learn more for the sake of their members are what make CrossFit experiences so special. Every gym is unique. It is recommended to shop around and find the most qualified coaches with the best reputation.

#9 Physical Education Most of the movements done in CrossFit are basic, but also technical. Coaches and members really care about developing skills and teaching you how to do movements that you never thought were possible.

#5 Olympics CrossFit is made up of very traditional athletic disciplines like Gymnastics, Olympic Weightlifting, and Track and Field. The next time you are watching the Olympics, you can impress your friends with the knowledge of movements and techniques being used.

The same rule also applies to those singles swimming around in the dating pool. When you’re smothering someone, it can turn out to be a very uncomfortable situation and actually push that person further away. It may be happening without you even realizing it! If the person you’re pursuing is giving you the cold shoulder, it may be time to ask yourself

the situation. However, be careful in giving too much space. This can result in a lost connection and give off signals that you’re disinterested, an ice queen or simply playing hard to get. Once you have figured out the balance between too much space and not enough, you’re one step closer to achieving a happy and healthy relationship.

Achieve a Fabulous Flush

beauty

How to Achieve a Fabulous Flush By Joy David-Tilberg

Winter can suck the life out of your skin. Let your blush be your BFF this season. A pop of colour on the cheeks does wonders. With so many colours and finishes to choose from, picking the right blush can be confusing. Here are some makeup tips on achieving the perfect flush.

Help: My blush fades after a few hours. Rescue: Whether it’s oiliness or the harsh winds your skin is battling, sometimes your cheeks need more staying power than a regular powder can give. Try a cheek stain like Benefit’s new cheek and lip stain in Lollitint. You’ll love this orchid shade, the 2014’s “it” colour of the year. Stains set quickly so work them into the skin fast. For natural looking cheeks, apply three swipes onto the apple of the cheeks and blend in a circular motion with your finger or a blush brush. Start out with a sheer layer and add more until you get the desired intensity. If you want it to last even longer, you can layer a powder blush on top. Help: My skin has no glow in the winter. Rescue: Cream blushes will give you the most natural finish, as it melts into the skin. For beautiful, dewy skin, dab a cream blush like Stila’s Convertible Color onto your cheeks with your fingers after your foundation and before your powder. For accurate placement, do not be afraid to use a fluffy powder brush to apply a cream blush. You will still receive the same glowy

finish. Again, start out with a sheer layer and build. To make it last, set your blush with a translucent powder. Help: How do I wear a bright shade without looking overdone? Rescue: Blush is meant to enhance your skin tone and perk up your overall look. Bright shades can look scary in the pan, but finishes these days are full of colour yet blend a lot easier. Shades in bright pinks and magenta like NARS Couer Battant Blush from the Guy Bourdin collection give such a gorgeous flush of colour and will instantly brighten up your face. To make it wearable for everyday, use a fluffy round blush brush. Tap off the excess and apply a sheer layer onto the apples of the cheeks (apply to the middle of the cheek towards the hair line if you have rounder cheeks). The trick to make it look like you’re blushing from within is to take a blending brush used for eye shadow or a sponge and dab it in some translucent powder. Apply the powder to the edges of where the blush is applied and blend. This will soften any harsh lines.

The Art of Macaroni & Cheese

melt: The Art of Macaroni & Cheese By Emily Kline

New to the world of cookbooks is MELT: The Art of Macaroni and Cheese, a tribute to a classic dish but with a twist. Stephanie Stiavetti and Garrett McCord reinvent the cult classic dish by fusing gourmet ingredients with a wide range of pastas and handcrafted cheeses. MELT encourages home cooks of all levels to incorporate simple and fresh ingredients into the comfort food they already know and love. MELT encourages experimentation by offering alternative cheeses, suggested wine pairings and additional ingredients to help you create a rich, creamy, mouth-watering dish. Below is a delicious recipe from inside the book: Penne with Garrotxa, Serrano Ham, and Sun-Dried Tomatoes (Serves 2 to 4) • 8 ounces penne • 1 pound Garrotxa, shredded • ¼ cup milk • ½ cup crème fraîche • 1 tablespoon butter • ½ teaspoon freshly ground white pepper • ½ cup chopped sun-dried tomatoes • 6 ounces Serrano ham slices, torn coarsely by hand into chunks Native to Catalonia, Spain, Garrotxa is a throaty, goaty cheese that imparts an almost Cheddar-like tanginess. A gray mold blankets this pasteurized

90

| the stylish life magazine | REMARK

flavor titan, which gets its smooth earthiness from the lush coastal grasses that feed the goats raised to make it. Cutting away the rind on this firm cheese is easy, and a sharp knife run down the sides will shave off the moldy exterior without sacrificing much of the Garrotxa beneath. Here, Garrotxa coalesces with two other signature Spanish ingredients, sun-dried tomatoes and Serrano ham, to create an ethereal cheese gratin polished with just a touch of butter, milk, and crème fraîche. This recipe isn’t your typical melty, creamy macaroni and cheese; rather, it’s a drier dish that allows the ingredients to mingle coyly while remaining somewhat independent. 1. Preheat oven to 375°F. 2. Cook the pasta in salted boiling water until al dente. Drain through a colander. Set aside. 3. In a saucepan, combine cheese, milk, crème fraîche, and butter. Cook over medium-low heat until cheese is mostly melted and you have a creamy sauce. To keep the cheese sauce from breaking, remove the sauce from the heat before the cheese is entirely melted. Season with pepper, adding more to taste if you like. 4. In a shallow buttered casserole dish, toss pasta with sun-dried tomatoes and Serrano ham. Pour the sauce over the pasta, then stir together until combined. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes, until the top is golden brown and bubbling around the edges. Serve immediately. Alternative cheeses: Ibores, Twig Farm Goat Tomme, Bardwell Farm’s Equinox Wine pairings: Txakoli, Catalonian white wine, Grüner Veltliner Additional pairings for the cheese: fig jam, picholine olives

tea with a twist

food

Tea with a Twist By Lynda Budd, the Tea Alchemist

We are all trying to lead healthy lifestyles. We want to fit exercise and eating right into hectic schedules, which can be challenging. An easy way to stay on track is to pick something healthy that you already enjoy, and discover different ways of enjoying it. That something is tea. Tea has been around for over 5000 years and is the most commonly consumed beverage, after water, in the world. Different cultures have used tea as part of rituals and daily consumption for centuries. The health benefits are an added bonus to its tasty flavours. Tea is full of antioxidants, and research shows it can help reduce the risk of some cancers. With thousands of blends, there truly is a tea for every occasion. Granted,

food there is nothing like a freshly steeped cup of your favourite blend, but there are so many other ways to enjoy tea. A commonly overlooked way of using tea is in seasonings. Blending ground tea leaves with spices like cinnamon and ginger can add that je ne sais quoi to a dish. You can also get creative in the kitchen and make a tea rub for your next chicken, salmon or steak dish. Tea rubs are a great way to try something new while using what is already in your cupboards. Try using them to add a bit of spice to stews and stocks. If you would rather not create your own, try teALCHEMY’s black tea rub which combines brown sugar, cinnamon, curry powder, and fennel seed for a perfect blend. Having a get together soon? Create your own signature cocktail by adding tea to the mix. Try one of teALCHEMY’s Rooibos or Herbal blends as the base. Use brewed cup of tea, your favourite spirit and some fruit for garnish and you’re all set. You can also use tea to create your own special recipe for smoothies and lattes. Tea is normally served with dessert, but why not add it to your dessert? A quick and easy treat can be created by steeping two teaspoons of your favourite tea blend to a cup of boiling water, add to a tub of plain yogurt, stir, and refrigerate for a personalized fro-yo flavour the next day. You can also add one of teALCHEMY’s powders such as Matcha or Rooibos with cinnamon to a homemade ice cream recipe. With so many different blends of tea it can be easy to get overwhelmed by the selection. Every country, brand and store make their own blends, so one Earl Grey may taste completely different than another. Experiment and try new blends; you will never know which flavours you like unless you try them! Visit teALCHEMY and start exploring some tea-inspired recipes. 96
