Dear Members,

I am delighted to extend a warm congratulations to all the finalists and winners at the 2024 AHA (Vic) State Awards for Excellence.

The event was a great success and the media that followed truly engaged the public in highlighting our State’s great pubs and hotels.

A highlight of the evening was the presentation of the prestigious Nikakis Award to Pat Sheehan and Marilyn Bell.

Pat's longstanding commitment to the AHA (Vic) Council and both recipients' dedication to their local community and their pub is truly commendable.

Their partnership exemplifies the value that pubs play in their community.

Pat and Marilyn are worthy recipients of the Nikakis Award and serve as an inspiration to us all.

CEO’S UPDATE PADDY O’SULLIVAN

Dear Members,

AHA (Vic) is continuing to promote and advance the interests of member businesses through a variety of avenues. The following is an update on some recent initiatives and changes affecting pubs and hotels.

LIQUOR

Liquor Control Victoria will soon be launching a new digital application form for general liquor licences.

This anticipated user-friendly and intuitive form, designed to speed up licensing timeframes, is a welcome advancement for the industry.

After a successful settling of this platform, AHA (Vic) will look to support LCV in advancing on a similar model for applications to vary and/or transfer liquor licences, which would advance on our interest in reducing processing timeframes and simplifying the process for members.

The Victorian Government has rolled-out their Digital Driver Licence (DDL) in May this year.

This initiative intends to modernise the identification process and use technology to improve user convenience and security.

From a pub and hotel operational perspective, staff will have an added option for the checking of patron identification to establish proof of age.

The DDL will be accessible through a secure application on smartphones, providing a digital alternative to the traditional plastic licence.

The app will integrate with the Victorian Licensing Registry to support real-time updates and accurate information.

Members note, you can verify a DDL without touching the patron’s phone.

The DDL includes security features such as a hologram, dynamic photo that moves when the phone is tilted, and a QR code that can be scanned for further verification.

AHA (Vic) is keen to receive feedback from members as they engage with patrons and the DDL.

WORKPLACE RELATIONS

The Victorian Government has announced that the Sick Pay Guarantee Pilot will conclude, effective from 1 July 2024.

AHA (Vic) maintained a clear position on the appropriateness and application of the Sick Pay Guarantee beyond pandemic-related issues and we welcome the government’s decision.

Our key argument is that casual employees attract a 25% wage loading and this amount covers similar leave arrangements for part-time and permanent employees.

AHA (Vic) is a partner in the WorkWell Respect Network to deliver a program that can develop and lead our industry to further ensure pubs and hotels are a safe work environment free from gendered violence.

The participation of members in this network is important, and we encourage you and your team to contact the AHA (Vic) Workplace Relations team to learn about how you can be a contributor.

The Fair Work Commission has announced the Annual Wage Review for 2024, resulting in a minimum wage increase of 3.75%. This follows last year's increase of 5.75%.

The new wage rates will be effective from 1 July 2024.

In its decision, the Commission stated: “In determining this level of increase, a primary consideration has been the cost-of-living pressures that modern-award-reliant employees, particularly those who are low paid and live in lowincome households, continue to experience notwithstanding that inflation is considerably lower than it was at the time of last year’s Review. Modern award minimum wages remain, in real terms, lower than they were five years ago, notwithstanding last year’s increase of 5.75 per cent, and employee households reliant on award wages are undergoing financial stress as a result. … We have taken into account that the labour market and business profit growth overall remain strong, but the picture is less positive in some of the industry sectors which contain a large proportion of modern-award-reliant employees.”

Updated wage sheets, allowance guides, and awards for the Hospitality Industry (General) Award 2020 and Restaurant Industry Award 2020 will be available in the coming weeks.

In addition to the minimum wage increase, there is a forthcoming increase in the Superannuation Guarantee Rate from 11% to 11.5%, effective 1 July 2024.

This increase, with a further rise to 12% in July 2025, is the final legislated change, and it is important for all members to prepare for this adjustment.

We will continue to keep you updated on further developments and support you in navigating these changes.

As always, please contact AHA (Vic) office to discuss any of these items in further detail.

Cheers,

Global Gaming Women

BACK IN FEBRUARY THIS YEAR, IF YOU ASKED ME WHAT GLOBAL GAMING WOMEN DO AND WHAT I WILL BENEFIT BY BEING A PART OF THE ORGANISATION, I WOULDN’T HAVE BEEN ABLE TO ANSWER OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD.

Now? It’s fair to say I’ve drunk the Kool Aid and I’m all on board!

Global Gaming Women (GGW) was created in 2011 as a development program by the American Gaming Association to advance emerging female leaders in the gaming industry.

Initially launched as an independent charitable organisation in 2016, GGW now delivers high-impact programs and events to women in the gaming industry.

In March this year I was fortunate to have been awarded a scholarship from GGW to participate in their 2-day Leadership Development Program in Las Vegas. WHAT? I was going to

Vegas to immerse myself in all things gaming. You couldn’t wipe the smile from my face!

I spent two intensive days and nights with 26 extremely talented, passionate, and dedicated women who work in all facets of the gaming industry across the USA. Their range of backgrounds, roles and companies in the industry was varied and every single one of them was proud to work in the gaming industry. I think that

was the most refreshing part of this program for me. Here in Australia, gaming can be quite controversial, it can be divisive and maybe there are some of us that don’t feel like we can be open about our love for the industry.

I know I have made connections that will last a long, long time with a bunch of women I can call on for support.

MEMBERSHIP UPDATE by
8 | HOTEL TODAY

With over 7,000 active members across 70 countries, the organisation offers educational programs, mentorship opportunities, and networking events all over the world.

In fact, GGW held its inaugural Melbourne networking event in April where over 25 women and allies from all parts of the gaming industry, joined us for drinks and nibbles.

Adelaide is holding their first event this month and the working group for Australia/New Zealand (ANZ) is currently working on some exciting plans for the AGE in Sydney in August.

At our Melbourne event, well known gaming companies like Tabcorp, Aristocrat, IGT and Light & Wonder mixed with attendees from

racing clubs, casinos, and smaller independent tech companies.

It was heartwarming to meet so many people from the Victorian gaming industry from such a variety of job roles! We had attendees from compliance backgrounds, legal, finance, product development, analysts, business development and of course those working at racing clubs, hotels, community clubs and RSLs. It really opens your eyes to the myriad of job roles in our industry.

I was really energized by meeting so many different people from different parts of the industry I love.

Initially “voluntold” to be a part of the Australia/New Zealand subcommittee from an industry colleague, I

have embraced the experience wholeheartedly and can’t wait to see how this organisation grows in our backyard.

In an industry where women have been underrepresented, Global Gaming Women is leveling the playing field. The vision of GGW is a future of inclusiveness and diversity that benefits every individual in the industry.

It’s time to get involved! Check out Global Gaming Women - Home and if you are heading to the AGE in Sydney in August, keep an eye out for GGW, we can’t wait to see you!

With its roots dating back to the 19th century, this iconic establishment has undergone a remarkable transformation, blending its historic charm with modern amenities to offer guests an unforgettable experience.

Recently, we had the pleasure of chatting with Peter Appleby, the General Manager of The Grand Hotel Warrandyte, who emphasized the importance of the hotel's partnership with Chef's Hat.

"Here at the Grand, we have been using Chef's Hat for all things kitchen and front of house supplies for many years," Peter shared.

He praised the invaluable support provided by Chef's Hat's sales team, particularly Rebecca, noting her can-do attitude and resourcefulness.

He told us a little bit more about the history of this beautiful Hotel. Originally built in 1895, The Grand Hotel began its journey as a humble pub, serving as a gathering place for locals and travellers alike. Over the years, it has witnessed the ebb and flow of time, surviving fires, renovations, and changing ownerships. VICTORIA’S HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY SHINES AT THE 2024 AHA (VIC) STATE AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE

The pinnacle event of the Victorian hospitality industry unfolded on Monday, May 20 at Crown Palladium, with a diverse array of venues and influential figures in the sector being honoured in 40 distinct categories during the sold-out gala dinner and awards ceremony.

A crowd of 1200 attendees gathered at Crown Palladium for the highly anticipated 2024 AHA (Vic) State Awards for Excellence, where the industry’s strength and successes were honoured, bringing an electric energy to the room.

“At the 2024 AHA (Vic) State Awards for Excellence we celebrated the hospitality delivered through Victoria’s remarkable pubs and hotels. The Awards recognised the significant commitment and dedication of our publicans, hoteliers and their staff,” said Paddy O’Sullivan, CEO of AHA (Vic).

Our marquee event partner, Tabcorp, was once again a key contributor to the success of the evening. “A few years back we were dealing with the pandemic, and more recently we see pubs working through economic challenges like inflation and cost of living. Despite these challenges that you all face, you still show up for your customers day in and day out, and for that unwavering dedication you should be recognised,” said Paul Carew, CEO of Tabcorp.

The prestigious 2024 Nikakis Benchmark Award was presented to Pat Sheehan and Marilyn Bell from the Rising Sun Hotel Bendigo. Pat and Marylin have exemplified outstanding dedication and service to their community and the hospitality industry, demonstrating the true spirit of the Nikakis Award. Their longstanding involvement in local organisations and support for the

AHA have made them pillars of the Bendigo community and champions of regional pubs and hotels.

The highly anticipated ‘Overall Hotel of the Year- Metropolitan’ was presented by Carlton & United Breweries. The 11 contenders for 2024 included names like The Botanical Hotel (South Yarra), The Continental Sorrento, The Fifth Province (St Kilda), and taking away the title was The Notting Hill Hotel, fondly known as “The Nott” by its patrons. This category also consisted of a regional counterpart, where The Middle Hotel Korumburra was declared winner among 13 finalists.

The ‘Chef of The Year’ award was taken away by Rory Brown for presenting incredible flavours packed in a modern style pub menu at the Five Flags Hotel in Campbells Creek. Rory says country pubs are in his blood (his grandparents owned a pub in Kyabram and his mum was a pub cook) and he loves being part of the fabric of Campbells Creek, where he spends spare time hunting and fishing.

The ‘Local Legend’ award acknowledges outstanding community service and achievement within the hospitality industry by certain individuals. This year, Stewart McKinnon from Barwon Heads Hotel was honoured with the title of Local Legend of the Year. A barman by trade, Stewie is a true larrikin who puts the community first every time. He runs a social club at the pub, bringing people together for meal, and drives elderly locals to appointments around town and as far as Melbourne. But Stewie’s greatest achievement is the Friday Night Raffle, which has raised thousands of dollars for charities and needy locals in the last couple of years.

Our ‘Best Cocktail List of The Year’ category made its debut at this year’s awards night, and Paradise Valley Hotel in Clematis triumphed among notable contenders. The win celebrates their innovative creations like the ‘Ultra Violet’ and ‘Caramilk Punch’ cocktails, along with serving up delicious classics like the Limoncello Spritz and Spicy Margaritas, making Paradise Valley Hotel a must-visit for cocktail enthusiasts everywhere.

Over 146 pubs contested for the coveted ‘People’s Choice Award’ presented by Treasury Premium Brands and voted by the general public, was The Star Hotel Sale, emerging once again as the fan-favourite among their community. The venue had previously won the title at the 2023 State Awards for Excellence, maintaining its crown as the ‘Local’s Local.’

“The Middle Hotel in Korumburra, South Gippsland has taken the crown of Parma of The Year, beating out 15 other finalists with a perfect score. The key judging criteria included the quality of the produce, tenderness and appearance, topping-to-meat ratio, presentation (Was it constructed well? Was the cheese grilled?) and the quality of the side dishes, aka crispy chips and a fresh salad. You know, all the things we hungry punters look for when smashing a parma at our local,” as stated on TimeOut.

As we raise a toast to all the guests who made these moments unforgettable, we want to extend our heartfelt congratulations to all the winners and finalists for your achievements. Keep an eye out for all the winners of the evening in the upcoming pages.

A LEGACY OF DEDICATION: THE RISING SUN HOTEL’S STEWARDS AWARDED THE 2024 NIKAKIS BENCHMARK AWARD

The Nikakis Award offers an annual opportunity to reflect on the profound impact of individuals who, over a sustained period, have made significant contributions to shaping the fabric of our industry. Among the past winners are exceptional publicans, visionary hoteliers, dedicated administrators, and remarkable contributors from the beverage industry. Each has demonstrated dedication, entrepreneurial spirit, and a commitment to the sustained success of our industry, and with the continued legacy, Pat Sheehan and Marilyn Bell from The Rising Sun Hotel in Bendigo were announced as the recipients of the 2024 Nikakis Benchmark Award.

AHA (Vic) and National President, David Canny said in his speech, “One half of tonight’s Nikakis Award recipient was born into a life in the pub, filling fridges, cleaning glasses and by 12 years of age, pulling beers. Training as an accountant and then working in a factory in Kyneton, returning to the pub was an easy choice. A future in pubs was cemented. Being elected as an AHA (Vic) Councillor in 1982, provided the avenue for their important contributions to industry affairs, including being the longstanding Chair of the Bendigo Division. And like so many successful country publicans, having

a partner by your side, equal to the task, is the cornerstone of a community driven pub. The family custodians of this pub since 1953. Pat Sheehan and Marilyn Bell of the Rising Sun Hotel in Bendigo have dedicated their lives to their community, championing the rights of pubs and hotels in their region. They have continually embraced change by innovating to meet the

needs of their customers, and through their longstanding engagement with the Australian Hotels Association (AHA), they have significantly contributed to the success of the pub and hotel industry.”

Pat and Marilyn have been the family custodians of the Rising Sun Hotel since 1953. Together,

they have played a significant role in their local community through involvement in Bendigo Tourism, the Strathdale-Maristians Cricket Club, Sandhurst Footy Club, Bendigo Racing, the Marong Cup Committee, and the Bendigo Rotary. Their sustained performance and commitment to their customers, community, and peers serve as an inspiration to all.

Their dedication extends beyond their local community. They have shown unwavering commitment to the AHA, supporting numerous events, and have always been eager to travel and socialise with their colleagues. This spirit of camaraderie and shared purpose has furthered their contributions to the industry.

The Nikakis Award celebrates those who embody the values of service, innovation, and community engagement. Pat Sheehan and Marilyn Bell's journey in the hospitality industry reflects these values impeccably. Their work and dedication have not only supported their local community but have also had a lasting impact on the broader hotel industry in Victoria.

As we celebrate their achievements with the 2024 Nikakis Award, we recognise a truly remarkable partnership in hospitality and life. ELEGANCE AND INTIMACY APLENTY –THE LYALL REOPENS ITS DOORS

South Yarra’s The Lyall Hotel, has re-opened its doors after a two-year redesign and refurbishment; revealing an elegant five-star boutique hotel.

Completely reimagined, the “all new” Lyall unveils a heightened level of elegance and sophistication, reflecting modern style and sensibility while maintaining the timeless elegance its name has become synonymous with.

Purchased in 2021 by the team behind the luxury hotel The Royce, this refurbishment reflects a wider desire to revamp rooms and suites to new levels of sophistication while staying true to the character of their bespoke hotels and locations.

The property is purposefully discreet — designed to appeal to locals, guests and business travellers seeking an upscale urban retreat. Nestled adjacent to the hustle and bustle of South Yarra’s main

thoroughfares, the surrounding streets are perfectly serene, however within easy reach of Chapel Street and its designer boutiques, restaurants and major attractions.

“At DKO, we strive to create beautiful spaces with design integrity. The careful curation of materials, from alpaca velvet to woven wallpaper, chevron timber floors, and classic black and white marble, adds depth and character to the hotel's design, enhancing its charm and character,” Michael Drescher continued.

All suites have king or twin beds and French or furnished balconies. In the heart of the Coonawarra, Wynns Estate stands not just as a testament to superb winemaking but as a beacon of innovation and tradition. One that merges to create an enduring legacy guided by the extraordinary talents of Wynns’ winemakers, Sue Hodder, and Sarah Pidgeon.

As Wynns celebrates the upcoming release of its 2024 Luxury Collection, the legacy of these pioneering women is being brought more vividly into focus.

For over three decades Sue Hodder, Wynns’ senior winemaker, has been at the forefront of winemaking excellence - shaping the brand with a delicate yet determined hand. And while her tenure has seen significant shifts towards sustainable and innovative practices, Sue has made sure to only build on, not compromise, the classic charm that Wynns is known and loved for - “Never dismiss what has gone before you. It’s

context to a different time has relevance to our present and our future”.

Joining Sue in this visionary journey, Sarah Pidgeon has co-piloted Wynns into new realms of possibility. Together since 1998, they have introduced cutting-edge viticultural techniques, while nurturing the estate’s heritage vines. Sharing a parallel approach to Sue, Sarah notes “you must turn to the past, to inform the present”, a philosophy that guides her in shaping the future of Wynns.

Their combined efforts have not gone unnoticed, with the pair named ‘Winemakers of the year’ at the prestigious Australian Society of Viticulture and Oenology (ASVO) Awards 2016. An accolade that recognizes their significant contributions to the wine industry and community. A reflection of how, under their leadership, Wynns has become a symbol of empowerment and inspiration for a new generation of winemakers.

This empowerment has extended beyond the vineyards. Their dedication to Coonawarra’s ecological health and sustainability has positively impacted the local community, inspiring the greater winemaking industry. Now their team turns its focus to inclusivity, looking to “foster a resilient and diverse winemaking community” by ensuring diversity in gender, experience, and nationality.

This June, Wynns unveils its 2024 Luxury Collection. A distinctive release that reflects Coonawarra’s unique terroir. Yet another statement which stands as a testament to the enduring influence of Wynns’ visionary female leadership.

Sue, Sarah, and Wynns invite wine lovers of all backgrounds to explore a new classic – the latest of the legacy, the 2024 Luxury Collection.

PUBS, CLUBS AND FOOTBALL:

HOW OPTUS SPORT BUSINESS CAN SUPERCHARGE A VENUE

Sport is one of the great uniters – and in Australia, football is the sport that brings people together more than any other.

As any Australian who stepped outside of their front door during the Women’s World Cup in July and August of last year would have seen, football fans are the most passionate in the world – from the boisterous roaring of the yellow sea of Colombians, to the thousands of St George’s flagged-faced English and of course the Green and Gold who came out in their droves to support the Matildas.

It all starts from grassroots and shoots all the way up to the very highest levels, to the Premier League, European Championships and more.

Football is the most-played team sport in Australia, boasting more than 1.7 million participants through clubs or venues, according to AusPlay statistics – a net increase of nearly 250,000 since 2016. To put that into perspective, it’s nearly double the amount who play Australian Rules and nearly triple of those who play cricket.

In total, football has 570,000 Aussies aged 14 or over playing regularly, according to a 2024 study.

PARTNERS 34 | HOTEL TODAY

And that’s where Optus Sport comes in.

No one brings football fans closer to the action than Optus Sport, with a world-class offering of football’s biggest competitions, from the Premier League and LALIGA to UEFA EURO to the Barclays Women’s Super League (WSL) and beyond.

Optus Sport captivated audiences Australiawide with its comprehensive and awardwinning coverage of the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

It showcased the incredible talent and athleticism of women’s football and highlighted Optus Sport’s continuing commitment to delivering world-class women’s football content, which also includes the exclusive broadcasting rights to the two best women’s leagues in the world: the WSL and the National Women’s Super League (NWSL) in the United States.

On the back of the success of the Women’s World Cup nearly 12 months ago, Optus Sport’s winter offering this year are two of the biggest men’s international tournaments in the world: UEFA EURO 2024 and COPA AMERICA 2024.

That means football fans will be glued to their screens once again as Optus Sport delivers every moment of drama, every eek bit of excitement and every roar of triumph, from the

group stages all the way through to the final.

It’s the only way Australian football fans can watch Cristiano Ronaldo’s likely last ever major tournament with Portugal, can see if football finally comes home for England, and if Kylian Mbappe can take France all the way.

The last time the EUROs was on Australian screens, Optus Sport broke the record for the most-streamed live sporting event in the country ever (at the time), as Italy beat England on penalties at Wembley.

In the COPA AMERICA, it’s also likely the last time we’ll see Lionel Messi in a major international tournament, as he looks to lead his Argentina side to back-to-back glories against the likes of Brazil’s samba superstars.

There’s all this to look forward to on Optus Sport, and that’s without even touching on the crown jewel of all football leagues across the world: the Premier League.

It’s the most-watched league in the world thanks to its iconic clubs, fierce rivalries, starstudded line-ups, and unpredictable results that brings football fans together like nothing else.

And Optus Sport is at the heart of it, showcasing every match live and exclusive across Australia, as well as highlights, minimatches, and full-match replays to attract a diverse and passionate audience, enhancing the atmosphere and driving customer engagement.

What all that means for commercial venues is simple.

Firstly, broadcasting marquee live events such as UEFA EURO 2024, the Premier League, LALIGA and more will increase foot traffic, drawing in crowds of sports enthusiasts and create an attendance and atmosphere that will make fans eager to come back. It also provides an enhanced customer experience, with satellite broadcast, expert commentary, and interactive features.

Due to the timings of the best football from across the world, it means extended viewing hours for patrons, giving venues increased opportunities to attract customers during periods which traditionally would be quieter, such as early mornings or weekdays.

Finally, offering exclusive sports content of some of the most popular leagues in the world will set a venue apart from its competitors, positioning them as the premier destination for football viewing and social gatherings.

And that’s how Optus Sport can help venues engage with a whole fanbase.

NAVIGATING VISA SOLUTIONS FOR HOSPITALITY COMPANIES AND PROFESSIONALS IN AUSTRALIA

Absolute Immigration supports AHA Australia members in addressing hospitality worker shortages guiding employers through visa options and application processes for skilled overseas workers, ensuring a smooth and efficient experience.

The Australian hospitality industry thrives on a diverse and talented workforce. However, recent years have witnessed a significant shortage of skilled professionals. In recognition of the critical need to secure a qualified workforce within the hospitality sector, the implementation of an immigration program specifically designed to attract overseas professionals presents a viable solution.

Absolute Immigration recognises the invaluable contributions of the hospitality sector to the Australian economy. As a trusted immigration partner, we understand the challenges faced by Australian Hotels Association (AHA) members in attracting and retaining international talent.

For companies seeking to sponsor or hire overseas workers, as well as for skilled migrants aspiring to work in the vibrant hospitality industry and make Australia their home, this guide outlines the primary immigration pathways and visa options available.

PARTNERS 36 | HOTEL TODAY

VISA OPTIONS FOR THE HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY

There are currently over 100 visa subclasses that can be accessed as part of an immigration solution. Here is an overview of the most common visa options suitable for the hospitality industry:

• Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) Visa (Subclass 482): This visa allows Australian employers to sponsor overseas workers for up to four years if they cannot find an Australian worker to fill the job. Hospitality roles such as chefs, café managers, and hotel managers are often eligible under this category, provided the applicants meet the skill requirements and the employer can demonstrate a genuine need.

• Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional Visa (Subclass 494): Designed for employers in regional Australia to address labour shortages, this visa is ideal for hospitality workers willing to live and work in less urbanised areas. The visa is valid for five years and offers a pathway to permanent residency after three years of employment.

• Working Holiday Visa (Subclass 417 and Subclass 462): These visas allow young adults from eligible countries to work and travel in Australia for up to two years. They are popular among younger hospitality workers who wish to gain international experience while exploring Australia. Specified hospitality work in designated areas can contribute towards a second or third working holiday visa.

• Training Visa (Subclass 407): For those looking to enhance their skills in the hospitality industry, this visa permits up to two years of workplace-based occupational training. Applicants must be sponsored by an eligible business or organisation.

• Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) Visa (Subclass 186): This visa stream allows employers to nominate skilled workers for permanent residency, provided the role is considered critical to the business and no suitable Australian candidate is available.

Given the level of complexity when employing people from overseas, there could be alternative visa options that AHA members could consider, other than the standard 482 visas, saving the business both time and money. This would be subject to the areas that these employees are going to work, where they are currently located, and the skills and occupation required.

IT’S LIVE SPORT –

HOW HARD CAN IT BE?

40 | HOTEL TODAY

In the ever-changing sports market for bars, even the simple questions like these are increasingly difficult to answer.

• Which games do my customers really want to watch?

• How do I stand out from the local competition?

• Which games and competitions can I even show, based on my subscriptions?

Making the most of live sport is key to remaining competitive in challenging market conditions. And the good news is - there’s more sport than ever being shown on a variety of different channels (including the hugely advantageous free to air).

The challenge for venue managers and bar staff is making sure that you are:

1. Aware of the opportunities available to you, and;

2. Making the very most of them

FANZO has been specifically designed to help you with both those challenges and more.

A CHANGING LANDSCAPE

For better for worse, gone are the days where you can switch on your big screen and have all the biggest fixtures showing one after the other.

In 2024, if pubs want to appeal to Australian sports fans of every stripe, they need Foxtel, Stan, Optus, Paramount and beIN sports.

And with that, sports fans’ expectations are shifting. As bigger and better home AV systems become the norm, the need for venues to offer something better than the sofa is vital.

Whether it’s an electric atmosphere, superior hospitality or access to more matches from around the world, it’s key that pubs can offer something different to and better than watching the game at home.

DON’T SLEEP ON FREE-TO-AIR

Long gone are the days of slim pickings for pubs that don’t pay for a subscription package. Take a recent weekend in May as an example. From Thursday to Sunday you could have shown AFL, NRL, the Matildas, Italian Serie A, French Open tennis, the Champions League Final and more all across free-to-air TV.

The sheer breadth and depth of live sport available to bars is simultaneously an awesome opportunity for bars and a real challenge.

How are we expecting bar staff to know what’s on? What they should show in venue to get the most customers in? And how do you market it all online efficiently without needing a web developer, a social media expert and a graphic designer on retainer? Hint: That’s where we come in.

NEVER MISS ANOTHER GAME

FANZO exists to ensure that organising, marketing and showing live sport is less time-consuming and more profitable for venues in Australia.

Pubs with a profile are quickly able to see every sporting fixture available to them from across the globe and quickly understand what the biggest events that sports fans are searching for - whether that’s free-to-air, Foxtel, Optus or any other broadcaster.

From there, you simply select the fixtures that you'll be showing for the week and hit save. Our platform will then instantly update your FANZO profile, your bar’s own website, your staff and schedule posts to put on your social channels throughout the week. Don’t have time to manage it yourself? No stress, we can do it all for you.

HOW THEY DO IT – ZAGAMES CAULFIELD

We caught up with Katrina Whalan, sports bar manager at Zagames Caulfield to discuss how they are making the most of sport in their venue.

“Our customers expect us to show all the big sporting events, even when they are on at the same time. To make sure we have something of all customers, we have Foxtel, Optus sport and Paramount and we always have sport being shown on our screens” Katrina explained.

“We use FANZO to schedule our sport weeks in advance and then print out our sports schedule. This means we never miss any big sporting events, that our staff who don't follow sports know what to put on the big screens and helps us organise how to set up our screens each week”.

ENHANCING HOSPITALITY: STRATEGIC UPGRADES AND NEW BUILDS WITH GETC

In the bustling world of hospitality, the environment that venues provide plays a pivotal role in attracting and retaining guests. The ambiance and interior design of a venue are not just about aesthetics; they're about creating an experience that resonates with guests long after their visit. This is where strategic decisions regarding interior elements become crucial, whether it's through refurbishing existing spaces or the conceptualisation of innovative new builds.

Capitalising on Resurging Travel Trends

As travel trends in Australia continue to rebound, with domestic travel surpassing pre-pandemic levels and international arrivals gradually recovering, the hospitality sector finds itself at a pivotal juncture. With the resurgence in travel, now presents an opportune moment for hotels and

hospitality venues to consider refurbishing or redesigning their spaces. This investment not only prepares properties to meet the increased demand but also positions them to offer enhanced experiences that can significantly elevate guest satisfaction.

42 | HOTEL TODAY

The Strategic Importance of Interior Design

Interior design in hospitality goes beyond decoration. It involves making strategic choices that influence both the aesthetic appeal and the operational functionality of spaces. Thoughtfully designed interiors boost the atmosphere, comfort, and overall impression, directly impacting customer reviews, repeat visits, and recommendations. In a competitive industry like hospitality, these factors are essential for success and longevity.

Refurbishments vs. New Builds: Tailoring to Need

Refurbishments provide a cost-effective opportunity for venues to modernise and adapt to evolving customer preferences without the full expense of new constructions. This process allows for the integration of the latest technologies and design trends, rejuvenating the existing infrastructure and enhancing its market competitiveness. Conversely, new builds offer a fresh slate to embed cuttingedge, sustainable technologies and design elements from the outset, potentially redefining guest experiences and setting new industry standards.

Choosing GETC: Your Partner in Hospitality Excellence

Selecting GETC as your partner for refurbishing existing properties or undertaking new constructions guarantees an ally deeply versed in the nuances of the hospitality industry. BRIAN THANKFUL TO THOSE WHO SAVED HIS LIFE

A WELSHPOOL pub manager is thanking fastacting bystanders for saving his life when he suffered a cardiac arrest at work.

Brian Evans, 57, felt as though he had “a bit of a cold”, when he suddenly slumped off his chair at the Welshpool Hotel Motel in April.

“I was talking to some bar staff and all of a sudden I heard a crash, and Brian had fallen from a stool onto the ground,” his partner, Leanne Stockdale, said.

“I thought he must have hit his head but he hadn’t, he was just grey on the ground. As soon as I reached him, I knew something wasn’t right.”

Ms Stockdale and a couple of customers immediately rushed to Mr Evans’ aid, applying the pub’s Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and commencing CPR.

“As soon as we said ‘he’s got no pulse’, there were people lining up to do CPR to try to help,” she said.

“One person phoned Triple Zero (000) and we knew we had to get the defibrillator because he didn’t have a heartbeat.

“We’ve had to pull the AED out once or twice before because we’ve had a sick patient in the pub, but we’ve never had to use it.

“I was terrified. You know your CPR and first aid, but when it’s a loved one, it goes from your head.”

The bystanders delivered three shocks with the defibrillator and managed to achieve the return of spontaneous circulation before paramedics arrived.

Mr Evans was airlifted to the Royal Melbourne Hospital, where he spent five days before being able to return home.

“I want to say a big thank you to Leanne and everybody else that helped,” he said. “They still don’t know what caused it but I’m feeling fine again – I’m back to normal.

“It’s a reminder that we should all learn CPR.”

Ambulance Victoria (AV) Foster Branch acting team manager Tiana Daniels attended the case and said the actions of the bystanders were heroic.

“Minutes matter in cardiac arrests and the time while paramedics are on their way is crucial for bystanders to act,” she said.

“When a patient receives CPR and a shock, or multiple shocks as in this case, from an AED before paramedics arrive, their chance of survival increases by more than 70 per cent. “If Brian’s partner and other bystanders hadn’t acted so quickly, it could have been a very different outcome.”

Ms Daniels is encouraging community members to sign up to the GoodSAM app to give locals the best chance of survival.

“GoodSAM is a life-saving smartphone app that connects Victorians in cardiac arrest with nearby volunteers who are willing to start CPR and use an AED while paramedics are on their way,” she said.

The app directs responders to the patient as well as the nearest registered AED.

Mr Evans was reunited with the bystanders and paramedics who saved his life in Welshpool on Thursday, August 3.

UNCOVERING THE VALUE OF AN "OBLIGATION-FREE INSURANCE HEALTH CHECK"

In the lively world of pubs and hotels, where laughter echoes and glasses clink, it's easy to get caught up in the good times. But behind the scenes, ensuring your business is properly protected is crucial. Enter the "obligation-free insurance health check" – a chance to review your coverage and make sure you're covered for whatever comes your way.

IDENTIFYING GAPS: THE DISCOVERY PROCESS

Imagine a bustling pub in the heart of town, packed with regulars and newcomers alike. Amidst the hustle and bustle, the owners realize they might not be as well-covered as first thought. They decide to sit down with some savvy risk advisers from Adroit Insurance & Risk for an insurance health check.

During this consultation, the risk advisers delve deep into the establishment's current insurance

policies, meticulously examining the fine print. Through this process, they aim to identify any gaps or inadequacies in the coverage that may leave the pub vulnerable to potential risks and liabilities. This comprehensive review encompasses not only property, liability, and management liability coverages, but also extends to other essential aspects of insurance, such as business interruption, cyber and many more. By taking a holistic approach to risk assessment, the risk advisers ensure that the pub receives tailored recommendations to address all aspects of its insurance needs,

providing comprehensive protection against a wide range of potential threats and hazards. This allows peace of mind as the assets and livelihood of the publican/s are now on their way to being properly protected.

The process is further identified below:

Property Protection:

One area of focus is property insurance. The risk advisers analyse the existing property coverage to ensure it adequately protects the pub against risks like fires, floods, theft, and vandalism.

PARTNERS 46 | HOTEL TODAY

By evaluating the replacement value of the pub's assets and assessing potential risks, they recommend adjustments to the policy to provide robust protection for the establishment's physical assets.

Public Liability:

Another critical aspect is public liability insurance. With patrons frequenting the premises regularly, the risk of accidents or injuries cannot be overlooked. The risk advisers review the current public liability coverage to ensure it offers sufficient protection against potential legal claims arising from accidents or injuries on the premises. By identifying potential gaps, preaching mitigation methods and recommending appropriate coverage options, they help shield the pub from costly legal liabilities.

Management Risks:

Additionally, the risk advisers address management liability, an often-overlooked aspect of insurance. From employment disputes to allegations of negligence, managing a pub comes with various risks. The risk advisers evaluate the current management liability coverage to ensure it adequately protects the pub against potential legal claims and financial losses arising from management-related issues.

Addressing Underinsurance

The conversation also touches on a wider issue: underinsurance. Many businesses, including pubs and hotels, may find themselves underinsured, leaving them vulnerable to significant financial losses in the event of a claim. This is even more important in the current economic climate. An insurance health check is a proactive step towards addressing this issue, ensuring that establishments have the right coverage in place to protect their assets and livelihood.

Crafting Comprehensive Coverage

Armed with this info, the risk advisers from Adroit Insurance & Risk get to work. They scour the market, hunting down the best deals and coverage options. After some back-and-forth, they lock in a plan that ticks all the boxes – beefed-up property, public liability, and management liability coverage that'll keep the pub safe and sound.

A Secure Future

With their new and improved coverage in place, the pub owners can breathe easy. They're ready to face whatever the future throws their way, knowing they've got the right protection in their corner, at an extremely competitive price.

Allowing you to Take on Tomorrow

In conclusion, an "obligation-free insurance health check" is so important for pubs and hotels. By taking the time to review your coverage and make the advised necessary changes, you can keep your establishment safe and secure allowing you to focus on what really matters. So, why not schedule your own insurance health check today? It's the first step towards a worry-free future, filled with laughter, good company, and great memories.

The robust FY24 performance has been a testament to Victorians’ love for Keno and their strong support for local hotels as hubs of community engagement and fun.

According to Mark Ryan, Keno’s State Licenced Venue Manager Victoria, this ongoing success can be attributed to the collaborative partnership between Keno and hotels.

He says this relationship is not just about driving sales but also creating memorable experiences for customers and fostering a sense of belonging within the community.

“Victorian hotels’ FY24 Keno performance demonstrates the deep-rooted affection Victorians hold for the game they know and love,” he says.

“More than just a pastime, Keno has become an integral part of the social fabric, drawing players to local hotels that serve as vibrant hubs of social engagement and entertainment.

“In this way, the results underscore the unwavering support Victorians extend to their local hotels, recognising them as vital contributors to the region's social and cultural vibrancy.”

Last month, Keno launched a new brand campaign, Together We Play, that will seek to help Victorian hotels maintain and build their position into the new financial year.

Mr Ryan says Together We Play highlights the social connections that both Victorian hotels and Keno offer to customers.

“At the heart of the new Together We Play campaign lies the belief that Keno is more than a game of chance; it's a social experience that brings people closer,” he says.

“Whether it's a group of friends bonding over numbers, or strangers striking up conversations at a local hotel, Keno creates a vibrant tapestry of shared experiences.

“It shows that it’s not just about playing a game of Keno, it’s about fostering connections, creating moments of shared joy, and celebrating the camaraderie that comes with playing together.”

The key objective of this brand platform is twofold: first, to enhance Keno's social licence by promoting inclusivity and connection, and second, to set Keno apart from its competitors in a crowded market.

By highlighting the social aspect of the game, Together We Play aims to attract a diverse audience and drive growth among new and existing customers.

Bringing Together We Play to life

The new campaign follows a group of friends as they embark on a Keno adventure. Each character brings their unique skills and personality to the game, making it a collaborative and enjoyable experience:

• THE TEAM CAPTAIN: the one to round up your mates for a game of Keno.

• THE SCRIBE: there's always one - tasked with the important job of marking everyone's favourite numbers on a ticket.

• THE RUNNER: the most important role of all - you gotta be in it for your chance to win it! Drop off your ticket at the Keno counter before the next Keno game starts.

• THE NEWBIES: new to Keno? You don't need to be a pro, picking numbers is all you need to know!

The campaign's creative direction focuses on humour and relatability, tapping into

classic Australian themes that resonate with audiences nationwide.

From quirky characters to witty dialogue, the campaign captures the essence of Together We Play – fun, inclusive, and full of surprises.

“As Keno rolls out its new brand platform, we hope Victorian hotels feel a positive ripple effect,” Mr Ryan says.

“Whether you're a seasoned Keno enthusiast or a newcomer to the game, there's something magical about coming together and saying, ‘Let's play’.

“Because in the end, the real win is not just in the numbers, but in the connections we make with others along the way.”

YOU CAN HAVE A SAY IN HOW YOUR SUPER IS INVESTED

Super funds invest your money for you with the aim of growing it over time into a nice, tidy nest egg for retirement. There are a lot of rules about when you can access this money, so there are some limitations on the level of control you can have over your super.

But one of the things you can control is how your money is invested. This is known as investment choice in super. Most super funds have a range of investment options to choose from.

It’s important to think about how your super is invested because it’s one of the largest investments you may have. The investment option you choose can help make a big difference to how your super grows.1

Hostplus aims to cover its members’ investment needs over their working life and beyond.

While still working and building up their super balance, Hostplus members can pick and choose from a wide range of investments. These include options for conservative investors through to high-growth options for members that are comfortable taking on more risk.

The choices are just as varied in retirement when members are drawing an income from their super. Being retired doesn’t mean their super balance has to stop growing. Depending on the way the funds are invested, growth can be the goal. Similarly, if a retired member wants to take less risk in favour of having more certainty over their balance and income in retirement - they can.

When it comes to making a choice, you don’t have to do it alone. The Hostplus website has tools and resources that can help you to understand how to choose an investment

SIMPLE PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT TIPS TO IMPROVE

PARTNERS 54 | HOTEL TODAY

Nick Braban was a pub manager for 20 years before joining Tanda. Here are some tips picked up along the way.

If you read about performance management online, there’s a lot of discussion about workplace culture and vibe. There’s definitely some valuable lessons in it, but I think that a lot of businesses forget about some of the basics.

Getting the best out of shift and hourly based staff is also naturally different from keeping white collar office staff happy. Read on, and I’ll share my best tips from 20 years of working in the industry.

Reinforce Positive Aspects

From management’s perspective, I like to think of performance management and culture as a ledger with positive and negative things you need to do to flourish. On the positive side sit all the typical things like a team lunch or giving a good employee a pay rise.

Everyone likes to talk about these things, and why not. Reinforcing the positive aspects of working at your business brings staff together.

Remove bad practices

In my experience, enforcing (and documenting) the negative side of the ledger is just as important. These are things like setting

expectations, dealing with struggling employees, and even letting people go.

The issue is that it needs to be done the right way - and this is where many businesses stuff up. Often, people will let the issues pile up with an employee or a practice, then suddenly snap, and try to let someone go.

This can lead to tension, have bad effects on team dynamics, or worse, a complaint. Instead, I’ve found the best way to deal with performance issues is to set the expectations early, and ensure managers quickly let an employee know when they’re out of line.

Performance Manage Employees

The reality is that some employees won’t toe the line. If this is the case, there’s a few things you can do. Firstly, you want to make sure that all employees have a probation period. This is your time to weed out staff that simply aren’t up to the task and limits the “documenting” you may have to do for longer term employees.

Fixing underperformance

If someone’s underperforming you need to have honest discussions and let them know they’re not meeting expectations. These expectations have to be reasonable, and you need to make the comments in a formal setting - with it all well documented!

Letting staff go

Some staff unfortunately need to be let go. If this is the route you go down, it’s very important you follow the rulebook. Unfair dismissal claims can end up costing your business tens of thousands of dollars.

Tanda’s new advanced HR features provide your team with the tools to manage both the positive and negative sides of the ledger.

Documenting things from the Tanda mobile app immediately means a manager can never have an excuse around why or where diaries, warnings, and plans exist.

To have a look at Tanda and these features please get in touch with Aidan and our Victoria team!
