Articulating business stories is my passion—and I love helping companies get their messaging right with strong content. Beyond the ghostwriting, PR and marketing work I do with my colleagues for our global, national and local clients, I’m also the Chairman of the SomerCor Board, an SBA CDC lender.

Akrete is the nation’s #3 PR firm for real estate—and a Chicago WBE. We provide expert PR, content and marketing for real estate, financial services, professional services and cannabis.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

I will continue to give back via service on Boards of Directors focused on expanding economic empowerment and take Akrete into new sub-sectors of CRE, financial services and professional services.

What’s the best piece of advice someone has given you?

Know your own worth, the value of the services you provide and don’t be afraid to say no.

What is one dream you have yet to fulfill?

I would like to visit all seven continents. While I’ve technically set foot on all but Antarctica, I have a lot more traveling to do to truly experience them.

Would you rather win the lottery or work at the perfect job? Why?

There is no perfect job, so I’ll have to say win the lottery!

What is one of your favorite books or movies and why does it resonate with you?

I’m a huge Outlander fan, and can’t wait to visit all the famous spots in Scotland from the books and TV show.

aimee.val@akrete.com

A career that allows me to blend writing and real estate is a dream come true. I love helping companies articulate their strengths and showcase their knowledge. I’ve spent more than two decades as an in-house marketing and communications leader at the largest CRE brokerages and now enjoy agency life at Akrete.

Akrete is the nation’s #3 PR firm for real estate—and a Chicago WBE. We provide expert PR, content and marketing for real estate, financial services, professional services and cannabis.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

Still working, just doing it from more interesting places. I’m not ready to be a full-time digital nomad, but the flexibility of remote work is life changing.

What’s the best piece of advice someone has given you?

I try to live by the book “The Four Agreements” by Don Miguel Ruiz. Be impeccable with your word. Don’t make assumptions. Always do your best. Don’t take anything personally. (It’s not always easy!)

What is one dream you have yet to fulfill?

All of my dreams are focused on travel, which has been pretty limited thus far.

Would you rather win the lottery or work at the perfect job? Why?

I would rather win the lottery. Aside from the obvious improvements in my own life, it’s an opportunity to really impact the lives of others as well.

What is one of your favorite books or movies and why does it resonate with you?

In the last five years, my favorite movie has been JoJo Rabbit. I am blow away by it’s depth and brilliance.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

Being a mom and a business owner can be hard to balance. My kids and my work bring me the greatest joy. I see myself having more opportunities to mentor women on having it all – a family, a relationship, and a fulfilling job.

What’s the best piece of advice someone has given you?

Pause, let the emotion pass (usually 90 seconds), and respond with curiosity.

What is one dream you have yet to fulfill?

I would love to own a farm property. My husband and boys enjoy hunting and fishing. I would like the slower pace at times to connect with my family and nature. We keep bees, and I love gardening – having these activities play a larger role in my life would be a dream!

Would you rather win the lottery or work at the perfect job? Why?

Perfect job for sure! I love working. I am very competitive and love learning. I have grown over the last year in my leadership skills and have enjoyed mentoring others in my organization and in my industry. Leaving a formal environment to continue to grow would be tough for me.

What is one of your favorite books or movies and why does it resonate with you?

I am currently watching Suits. The cutthroat culture, old boys club, strong female lead, and business attire… NYC! My career in finance and real estate have had elements of this portrayal of the legal culture, but the piece they do well is the personal side. Business is business, but you cannot take human nature and emotions out of it, no matter how hard you try.

I aim to maintain our local KC office’s dominance and growth while preserving our culture. I am excited about the future and confident that our office will successfully meet our clients’ business objectives.

What’s the best piece of advice someone has given you?

Always ask the complete question, and always give the complete answer. This requires the ability to think ahead, the confidence to be transparent, and the need to take ownership of the outcome so you deliver results.

What is one dream you have yet to fulfill?

My dream is to see the success of the new younger associates on our team, as well as the successes of my own children. I take a lot of satisfaction helping them develop and achieve their own dreams, and encourage them to be intellectually curious, work hard and stay humble.

Would you rather win the lottery or work at the perfect job? Why?

I’d rather have the perfect job. I love to work and have been fortunate to have worked for multiple companies whom I would classify as “dream jobs”. I’ve learned and grown from each one and am so thankful for the opportunities I’ve been blessed with.

What is one of your favorite books or movies and why does it resonate with you?

Win the lottery. I am endlessly curious and would love to work many jobs as well as take classes or finish a few more degrees. None of that would likely pay the bills!

Where do you see yourself in five years?

As a newly elevated Partner, I see myself taking on more leadership roles, with an emphasis on training, coaching and empowerment, and the goal of eventually leading the firm’s Real Estate Practice Group.

What’s the best piece of advice someone has given you?

If it can be done in under two minutes, do it right now (or, according to my mother, never skip breakfast and always bring a jacket).

What is one dream you have yet to fulfill?

Taking my daughter (now just one year old) to a Michigan football game.

Would you rather win the lottery or work at the perfect job? Why?

Working at the perfect job is winning the lottery! Nothing replaces the sense of fulfillment and accomplishment obtained from doing a job well, with people you genuinely enjoy.

What is one of your favorite books or movies and why does it resonate with you?

“You Raised Us, Now Work With Us,” which discusses generational differences, how they impact working styles, and how leverage that understanding to create effective work teams. That or Harry Potter!

What’s the best piece of advice someone has given you?

When I got my first job, my father told me that no matter what the job, do it to the best of my ability. I’m now a long way from that first job, which was washing dishes and cleaning bathrooms at a local restaurant. But his advice is what has guided me throughout my career.

What is one of your favorite books or movies and why does it resonate with you?

My favorite movie is “Out of Africa.” It resonates with me because it’s about a woman who made it on her own through all kinds of adversities, in a time period when society was not favorable to women and in a place that was even more unfavorable to women. Besides, I used to live in Kenya where the movie was filmed so I especially enjoy the cinematography.
