Message from the Board There are a lot of Reining Alberta events to look The South Branch kicked off their show season last forward to in the next few weeks! month at Silver Slate and enjoyed a fun day of showing. The Spring Classic is only 6 weeks away. There is more info on the show starting on page six. But entries can also be found on the website. New for the Spring Classic – thanks to White Trash Reiner’s – there will be a pizza and derby draw party! If we know anything about White Trash Reiner’s this will be a great time!!! The Classic will also be showcasing the wonderful Derby horses and breeders that we are fortunate enough to have in our Province. The Reining Alberta Derby classes are always a lot of fun to watch and cheer on the horse & rider duo’s that make it all look so easy.

The North Branch starts its season on May 3&4 with a Judging seminar with Lyle Jackson on the Saturday, and a show on Sunday. Lyle has given a few of these seminars for us in the past and there is always something new to learn. The Peace Branch’s first show is May 9-11, Locke Duce will be coaching a clinic on May 9&10, and judging the show on May 11. Locke has proven many times that he is an excellent coach with many of his NonPro’s boasting great show pen success. His are always popular clinics, and we have no doubt this will be no different! Good luck to all our riders hitting the show pen!

“My focus is to provide training for horses and coaching for people that facilitates high performance athletic development in both horse and rider without compromising the long term development of the horse” Offering Lessons, Training, Clinics and Coaching at Horse Shows for all levels of riders.

Ask the Judge

er kH c i l C

e!

With Lyle Jackson

For the May edition of the Rundown Lyle has agreed to score a run and take you through his thinking process when evaluating maneuvers. Please click on the photo on the top right to go to the link to the video. Video taken by HD2 Reining

T

he appearance of a run seen on video is different from live. Particularly the impression of speed and therefore degree of difficulty is different. Also the position of the camera is different from the position of the live judge. In a multi judged event, all of the judges sit in slightly different positions and see the run differently. Penalty assessment is affected by this. Since the benefit of doubt always goes to the rider, one judge can be uncertain as to the exact degree of over spin for example, and therefore does not assess the penalty. Another judge, in a more central position may have no problem being confident that the over spin was more than a shoulder width and gives the ½ point penalty. So let’s evaluate this run from the cameras perspective. »» Approach to center is correct, no excessive corrections, horse guides willingly. Right Spin starts correct, pivot foot drifts somewhat. Cadence is good although speed presents little degree of difficulty. Four spins, with no over or under spin. Speed does not make up for incorrect pivot foot; final score minus ½. Viewed live this spin probably appeared faster and the added degree of difficulty could bring the score up to zero. »» Left Spin, pivot foot is more correct, cadence not as good as the Right spins, sufficient for a correct maneuver, score zero. »» Left Circles starts with a good lead departure, horse guides very well on a relatively loose rein. Does not use the walls to guide, passes through center every time, transition to small and slow circle very precise. Lead change very correct. Correct circle, score zero. Added speed to increase the degree of difficulty and these circles could very easily plus. »» Right circles very similar to left circles. Horse anticipates the change and requires a little more guidance to move to the small and slow circle. This is not enough to lower the score. Zero. »» Stop and right Roll Back, correct approach (zero), correct stop, very little degree of difficulty (zero), roll back correct and a little sluggish, however very willingly guided (zero). Maneuver score; Zero. »» Stop and left Roll Back, correct approach (zero), correct stop very little degree of difficulty (zero), roll back very sluggish (minus 1). Averaging the three components of the maneuver, final score: Minus 1/2. »» Stop and back, correct approach but a braces the shoulders a little initiating the stop. Low degree of difficulty. Back is correct. Maneuver score Minus ½. Total score for run 68 ½.

Running to the Stop

I

n order to perform a good stop, the Reining horse must be running correctly prior to the stop and as you ask for the stop. This means the horse must being going forward freely (ahead of the leg), and not pushing on your hand.

How the horse will feel off of the leg: When the horse is ahead of your leg, the horse will feel as though they are running straight uphill, not downhill. A horse that drops back behind your leg and does not move forward off of the leg will often feel crooked with a choppy stride. How the horse will feel off of your hand: A horse that is soft in the bridle will feel free in the front end as they run to the stop. Conversely, a horse that is pushing on the bridle will feel heavy in the front end and the hindquarters will not feel engaged. Anytime a horse wants to slow down going into the stop, weight will transfer to the front end and the horse will perform a lesser quality stop. It is common (especially in older show horses) to see horses burst as they begin their rundown and then slow down before executing the stop. In this type of rundown the horse packs weight on the hindquarters as they burst, and then as the horse tries to slow down before the stop there is a transfer of weight from the hind end to the front end (and often more to the outside shoulder). This impedes the quality of the stop because the horse is now also using its front end to stop, in particular its outside front leg. To address this problem in the show pen it is important to purchase paid warm-ups or attend schooling shows. When you school the horse prior to showing, you will want to run long to the fence to help the horse learn not to anticipate stopping during the rundown. Keep the logic simple when schooling…if your horse feels like they want to slow down or anticipate the stop, KEEP the horse running (you may have to run the perimeter a few times). As soon as the horse feels like they want to relax and run, that is when you can ask for a stop. When it comes time to do your run, a mental strategy to use is to stay focused on your horse’s stride. The rider’s mental focus then supports what it is you want to have happen, which is to extend the stride while accelerating right to the stop. Often, if the rider tries to “plan” the stop, the horse will sense this and will anticipate stopping, or will even try to set up for the stop (scotching). When a horse anticipates the stop, the stride will shorten which is undesirable. If your horse is responsive to the word Whoa, then staying focused on a forward moving stride as you say Whoa will result in the best stop. When you are at home, a good drill to use to improve how the horse runs during the rundown is the Rectangle drill. In this drill, the rider runs a rectangle along the perimeter of the arena. Do not let the horse run an egg shape around the perimeter, as this indicates the horse is pushing its shoulders to the outside. Keeping the shoulders straight will keep the stride straight. A straight stride is a more forward moving stride, and it is easier to control acceleration when the horse is running straight. Rectangle laps develop straightness and teach the horse to free up, stay straight, relax, and focus on running. A simple rule of thumb is if the horse anticipates the stop then keep running. Once the horse feels comfortable running, then ask for a stop. Through repetition of the rectangle drill, the horse’s stop will improve. Page 11

With the first show of the season under our belts, things finally feel like they are underway. Lots of planning has taken us to this point, but this is where the fun really begins for us committee members!

Megan – rasouthchair@hotmail.ca Jessica – rasouthentries@yahoo.com Karen – raringsmart@gmail.com Morgan – (403) 948-3954

We had a great first show, April is always a little slower but that makes for a great show to ease into show season, or get out there in the show pen for the first time. And it was nice to see a few new faces do just that! I’d like to thank Silver Slate Arena for always being such great hosts for our events and having everything ready to roll for us.

April Show Recap What a great day at the show! We had a bit of a rocky start with the poor road conditions in the morning, but boy did we make up for it! It was great to see so many new faces at the shows! And always nice to be able to catch up with old friends. Carola did a great job for us judging (as always!) and did a wonderful job teaching our scribe clinic. I know I learnt a lot that I didn’t know before, and a reminder on the types of penalties you can incur is always helpful! I’d also like thank the hard working volunteer crew that Carola brought with her to the show, they did a great job working the gate (and kept us entertained with lots of jokes), scribed the show, and did a number of tasks that helped keep things rolling. So thanks ladies!!!! It was absolutely fantastic to see so many trainers attend the show, whether it was schooling horses in the paid warm ups or coaching clients. As always I have to thank my wonderful committee members who did such a great job getting us ready for the first show of the year. Morgan had the prizes and awards set up beautifully for all to see what they were running for this year. And as always Jessica amazes me with how she keeps things running smoothly and user friendly Lastly, I’d like to congratulate Alanna Hoeltzel on winning our first Tom Balding Bit in the Ltd. Non Pro class. Results & score sheets have been posted on the website.
