qualifications
Qualifications Reid Kerr College is approved by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) to deliver a range of academic and vocational qualifications, including Higher National Diplomas (HNDs); Higher National Certificates (HNCs); National Certificates (NCs); Professional Development Awards (PDAs); Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQs); National Qualifications at Access, Intermediate 1, Intermediate 2, Higher, Advanced Higher, Skills for Work and National Progression Award programmes. The College also offers a further range of programmes certificated by City & Guilds, NEBOSH, Chartered Management Institute, Chartered Institute of Marketing and a range of other professional bodies.
Which Qualification Is Right For You? National Qualifications: National Qualifications provide a broad range of options for progression beyond Standard Grade and are available at five levels: Access Higher Intermediate 1 Advanced Higher Intermediate 2 These qualifications normally consist of three units, plus an external assessment. Each unit counts as a qualification in its own right (a National Unit), so even if you don’t sit or pass the external assessment you still get credit for the units you have successfully achieved.
National Certificate (NC): These courses are appropriate for those with little or no prior knowledge of a specialist subject. It is particularly suitable for learners with few or no formal qualifications or for those returning to education after a break of some years. It is a full-time course of either six months (January Fast Track) or 1 year duration, it may also be possible to study on a part-time basis. Higher National Certificate (HNC): This is an advanced course with subjects studied in greater depth than at NQ/NC level. Generally younger students would be expected to possess one or two highers or appropriate NC for entry. Mature students without these qualifications may gain direct entry with appropriate work or life experience. Check course details for entry requirements. HNC’s are offered on a full-time, part-time or distance learning basis. Full-time courses are of a year’s duration or six months (Fast Track). Successful completion of an HNC can lead to progression to the 2nd year of a relevant HND or direct entry into many degree courses at either 1st or 2nd year level. Higher National Diploma (HND): This is a two year advanced course normally undertaken on a full-time basis, although some are available by part-time study. This course allows students to study a wider variety of subjects than at HNC. Entry requirements for an HND are similar to that for an HNC. Successful completion provides wider access to the jobs market and can lead to direct entry into 2nd and sometimes 3rd year of particular degree courses. There are direct articulation routes from HNC to HND. Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQ): SVQs are work based qualifications designed to equip students with skills directly related to their job. They are designed by industry for industry and are available at a variety of levels to encourage continual learning progression. Entry qualifications are for general guidance only. If you are interested, but unsure of which course of study may be best for you please apply and we will provide expert advice and guidance.
Please do not hesitate to contact our Admissions Unit on 0800 052 7343.

qualifications
Current Qualifications in the Framework
Scottish Credit & Qualifications Framework (SCQF): The Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF), has been designed to enable learners, employers, parents and those involved in providing education to understand how Scottish qualifications relate to each other. The framework was developed in partnership between the Scottish Executive, Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA), Universities Scotland and the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education. It brings most mainstream qualifications from Access 1 (SCQF Level 1) to Doctorate Degree (SCQF Level 12) into a single framework.
Every qualification currently in the framework has been assigned an SCQF level and credit value. The SCQF level is a measure of how demanding a qualification is. A notional 10 hours of learning is given 1 SCQF credit point. Qualifications placed at the same level indicate that the level of learning gained in each qualification is comparable but not the same in content or purpose e.g. Level 8 contains HND and SVQ level 4 awards. SCQF information is now included on all Scottish Qualifications Authority Certificates.
“
Having completed the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) Executive Diploma in Management, I recently secured a senior position within the Transport Control Department in Bermuda. Without this crucial Management training I could not apply for this post and I am confident that this qualification has successfully carried me through to this stage of my career. There are many benefits to studying by Distance Learning in particular the ongoing support from Lecturers and the on-line resources made available by Reid Kerr College. Accessing course materials could not have been easier and the on-line community function provided me with all the means of support needed from the lecturers, who communicated regularly and delivered a very efficient programme via e-mail and the College website.

The Seventeenth Century - A band formed while at College. The Seventeenth Century’s big break came when they played T in The Park. They recently launched the new BBC Introducing Show on Radio 1, playing live on the show.
“
I think the experience gained through studying at Reid Kerr College was definitely instrumental to our success. We met at college and formed the band there and the support from our lecturers was crucial to the development of our sound.

During his studies Gary was introduced to staff from the Student Support section in the College where he completed a number of tests and assessments and was later diagnosed with Dyslexia. He added, “Before I began studying at Reid Kerr I knew that I had difficulties with written work and following the tests, discussions and support from lecturers at the College I began to realise that I could achieve what I was aiming for. I am really proud of what I have achieved at College and within my own career. The training and most importantly the support that I have received while at Reid Kerr has been tremendous. “
My cousin studied Computing at Reid Kerr and following her success my mum was keen for me to come to Scotland and enrol on a similar course. After finishing school in Uganda, I travelled to Scotland and enrolled at Reid Kerr to study an NC Access to Information Technology, which I studied full-time for 1 year. The course was ideal and just what I wanted to do, I returned later that year to study for the HNC & HND Computing: Technical Support. The staff and fellow students have made me feel very welcome with the International Officer at Reid Kerr being a great support during my studies.

I have really enjoyed studying English here in Scotland as it has created a lot of opportunities for me. Along with many other subjects we learn everyday language skills in the ESOL classes and this has helped make living here a lot easier - I can now communicate well in many life style situations. I hope to continue with a Higher English language course at Reid Kerr next year and to continue to improve my language skills, working towards further education and training in Administration.

“
I enrolled at Reid Kerr College in Paisley following my 5th year at high school. I wanted to experience life outside of the school system and take a year at College in preparation for university. With an interest from school, I took an HNC in Business with the College's Business School, and studied full-time for one year. Making the transition from school to College could not have been easier. The atmosphere at Reid Kerr was great and I made a great number of friends while I was there. With a supportive team of lecturers and the opportunity to take a selection of optional subjects as well as what was core to the programme, made my year at Reid Kerr a very enjoyable one.

Heather Pringle - HNC Business
“
The course was hard work and although I had no previous experience of Information Systems, the teaching support was excellent and I settled in very quickly to my new life here. I was glad that I made the move to Scotland and onto College, as it has lead to many great experiences, all of which have prepared me well for working after my full-time education comes to an end.

Robert Kayitani was the very first Rwandan to enrol at Reid Kerr and his success here in Scotland has seen him return home to Africa to launch his own business.
“
Having been introduced to Reid Kerr College through ‘Education for Africa’ in my home town, I really liked the sound of the College and the courses on offer - together with my classmates, we applied to the College. Today’s world is driven by technology so I chose to study an HND Electronic Engineering and my 2 years of study has given me a greater knowledge and skills that has prepared me well for further study and my return to Rwanda.
”
Robert Kayitani - HND Electronic Engineering
“
I went through school with very little interest in learning and following a chat with some of my family who also have Dyslexia I made the decision to speak with the specialist staff at the College. Following an assessment with the Learning Plus section, the staff quickly recognised my additional learning needs and it has been this support at Reid Kerr that has carried me through my studies and ultimately helped me change my life for the better. Since receiving the support at College, not only have I achieved the qualifications that I set out to gain, but I have learned how to work with my condition and get the best out of my learning. All of the staff including the lecturers within the Engineering department have been incredibly supportive and I was never once made to feel as though I was different from anyone else in my class. Having Dyslexia means that I have to put in extra work over and above the regular class work and it was the friendly, approachable staff that made the additional learning really enjoyable.

“
Any opportunity to focus and develop your skills in photography, whilst being given constant projects and feedback on your work is a good one. No matter your background or area of interest in photography even the time alone dedicated to just constantly taking photos whilst having facilities and equipment made available to you is invaluable and gives you a base on which to build, no matter where you're planning to go. If it wasn't for Reid Kerr College I wouldn't have applied to the competition for the Royal commission, and some of the work that I presented as part of my presentation and portfolio was shot either in the studios, or on location as part of projects I undertook or started whilst on the course.

“
I was 18 when I started and I loved the college lifestyle. The courses enhanced my role as a volunteer and when I travelled to Africa and India during my summer breaks, I found that my training at college helped me prepare for the challenges that I faced. I found the staff very supportive throughout my 2 years at Reid Kerr and I plan to continue with my education this year, when I apply for a place at University to begin a degree in Nursing.
”
Kerry McGroarty - HNC Health Care
“
I have always been interested in working with people and after a career in customers services at Glasgow Airport, I made the decision to return to education and study within the Healthcare sector. The course at Reid Kerr has given me the fundamental knowledge needed to follow my goal of reaching University later this year. The 1-year course has been challenging but very rewarding and on completion of my training in June this year, I hope to be accepted onto the 1st year of a degree at the University of The West of Scotland (UWS) to study Nursing. The transition from college to university should be made a lot easier by the established links Reid Kerr already have with the course and the staff at UWS.

Learning at a local learning centre is an excellent environment for people to re-train and upgrade their skills. I studied an Information Technology and Communications course at my local learning centre and I have been able to further my education and re-train since then. This year I will complete my final year of an HND at Reid Kerr College.

“
I was looking for a qualification that would support my current work history and also help me gain a range of experience in various aspects of the community. The HNC at Reid Kerr was ideal as the programme covered a great choice of subjects as well as many core areas of study that were all key to achieving a fundamental qualification in community work.
