CHILDREN’S FITNESS CHILD TAX CREDIT: The Children’s Fitness Tax Credit allows you to claim eligible fees paid in the year up to a maximum of $500 per child (an additional amount of $500 is available if the child is eligible for the Disability Tax Credit and a minimum of $100 has been paid for eligible fees in the year). Eligible fees include an amount paid related to the cost of registration or membership for your or your spouse’s or common-law partner’s child in a prescribed program of physical activity. The child must have been under 16 years of age (or under 18 years of age if eligible for the disability tax credit) at the beginning of the year in which an eligible fitness expense was paid. On October 9, 2014, a proposal was announced to increase the maximum amount per child to $1,000 for the 2014 and subsequent tax years. You will be able to take advantage of the increased maximum amount when you file your 2014 income tax and benefit return in the upcoming filing season. • Ongoing (either a maximum of eight weeks duration with a minimum of one session per week, or in the case of camps, five consecutive days) • Supervised • Suitable for children, and • Substantially all of the activities must include a significant amount of physical activity that contributes to cardio- respiratory endurance plus one or more of: muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility or balance. The physical activity for which tax receipts are issued should encourage children to strive towards at least 30 minutes of sustained moderate to vigorous physical activity per session for children under 10, and 60 minutes for children 10 and over.

Learn-to-skate lessons for preschool-aged children in a fun, recreational environment. Skills covered will include learning about skating, safety and equipment, how to stand up on skates, skating forward/backwards and stopping. Hockey Skills Program

16 week program for hockey players in Grades 2-7 looking for extra skill development time on ice. Local coaches Anthony Ruck and Thierry Martine will provide instruction through drills and scrimmage play. Players must have their own CSA approved equipment (helmet with cage, gloves, pads, skates and sticks etc.). Transportation will be provided from school (OES/TEN/Sen Pok Chin) to the Oliver Arena, parents will need to arrange pick up from the arena at 3:00 p.m. Pre-registration through the Recreation Office is required. Family Shinny Hockey This is a non-competitive hockey experience for elementary school-aged children and their accompanying adults. Youth Emergency First Aid/CPR C

This 8-hour first aid course will cover the skills needed to recognize and respond to potential and immediate dangers and safely approach any emergency. Learn how to respond to cardiovascular emergencies for children & adults (CPR Level C) with Automated External Defibrillation (AED) training. Other topics that will be covered include choking, breathing & bleeding emergencies and how to treat for shock. Youth Geocaching

11 - 15 years

Geocaching (pronounced gee-o-cashing) is a high-tech treasure hunting game for GPS user. The basic idea is to have individuals/organizations place containers (referred to as geocaches) all over the world and share the latitude and longitude coordinates of these caches on the Internet. Once near the location, they must search the area to find the caches. Some geocaches also include direction and hints (sometimes encrypted) to help users find the cache. Participants will need to bring a GPS or a smartphone with a GPS App, good shoes for a walk and water. We will go as a group to try and find as many of the dozens of caches that are within a reasonable walking distance from the Community Centre. Lunch will be provided. Everyone is welcome - no previous experience in sculpture is necessary. Workshop is open to beginners, intermediate and professionals, ages 14 and up. The workshop will focus on - building the armature, familiarizing yourself with the self-hardening clay and using sculpture tools by sculpting individual facial features - an eye, nose, mouth and ear, and then right into the final head. Kyokushin Karate

The Oliver Kyokushin Karate club is one of the oldest Kyokushin dojo’s in B.C. Operating since 1986 Mike Riplinger (1st Dan) has been training since 1989. Classes consist of Kihon (kicks, strikes and blocks), Kata (forms), Kumite (sparring) as well as self-defense and conditioning. High levels of training have the benefit of preparing one’s self for any situation on the street, as well as increasing cardio level. Age of students: 13 years and older - Previous students 12 and under who have trained with Oliver dojo and have a colored belt will be able to train but please consider the higher level of training, and length of class time before registering because early dismissal will not be permitted. Mandatory equipment: Dogi (uniform) $65.00 (available through the club), however a plain white uniform WITHOUT lettering is almost permitted.* Please note - colored belts from other styles NOT permitted in class. Designed to target your torso working all aspects of the abs and back, sculpting your abs into shape and strengthening your core using stability balls - this is a pilates and yoga based workout, which is the key to your overall success. The Oliver Kyokushin Karate club is one of the oldest Kyokushin dojo’s in B.C. Operating since 1986 Mike Riplinger (1st Dan) has been training since 1989. Classes consist of Kihon (kicks, strikes and blocks), Kata (forms), Kumite (sparring) as well as self-defense and conditioning. High levels of training have the benefit of preparing one’s self for any situation on the street, as well as increasing cardio level. Age of students: 13 years and older - Previous students 12 and under who have trained with Oliver dojo and have a colored belt will be able to train but please consider the higher level of training, and length of class time before registering because early dismissal will not be permitted. This 8-hour first aid course will cover the skills needed to recognize and respond to potential and immediate dangers and safely approach any emergency. Learn how to respond to cardiovascular emergencies for children & adults (CPR Level C) with Automated External Defibrillation (AED) training. Oliver Parks and Recreation believes that healthier workplaces are more productive workplaces. It is also true that people who commit to exercise together and keep each other accountable are more motivated and successful in their fitness goals. When 6 or more adults (18yrs +) from the same place of business or organization purchase three or six month memberships to the Oliver Community Weight Room they will each receive a 25% discount as well as a free group weight room orientation session with one of our certified trainers.

Fitness Room Orientations New to the fitness room or to working out in a gym? Attend a one-time introduction session to our fitness room to get familiar with the different cardio and weight equipment options and how to use them safely and effectively. Please sign up for the session of your choice in advance. Participants must be 14 years or older and hold a current membership or pay the drop-in fee to attend.
