The Batuan and Keliki works like all traditional Balinese Paintings in the exhibition are all originated from the Kamasan style of paintings (based on Wayang Kulit / shadow puppet) that were used to decorate the palaces but then slowly transformed into more lifelike forms from the late 1920s following the demise of many Balinese kingdoms and the start of the colonial rules in Bali, which
put them in contact with the Western. It was further influenced by the arrival of foreign artists that introduced perspective and colors. The painting technique from 1930s has been mostly preserved in today’s traditional paintings.
