HARDWOOD MEMORIES

Bateman Gym floor sections that contained all 12 letters in the name “Lawrenceburg,” measuring nearly 4 X 4 feet each, sold out at Sunday's Tiger Pride/LHS Athletic Department fund-raiser. March 31 is the date set for ground-breaking of the $11.5 million structural improvement program that will replace the 50-year old facility.

Half-century old Bateman Gym floor now history BY JIM BUCHBERGER Sports Editor LAWRENCEBURG – Fifty years of Lawrenceburg athletic history was sectioned into small pieces and sold – for anywhere from $15 to an estimated $6,250 – last weekend. George (Bud) Bateman Gym, home of the Tigers since 1964, is scheduled to be razed shortly as part of an $11.5 million structural improvement program. So the old hardwood floor was sawed up and sold, or auctioned, as part of a quick-thinking fund-raiser by the Tiger Pride booster organization and LHS Athletic Department. “We were very pleased with the turnout, and we think Tiger Pride will be, too” said athletics director Joe Vogelgesang, who threw open the gym doors to Tiger fans, alumni or those with flooring projects in mind Sunday from 4-6:30 p.m. No cash estimate of the take is available so far, but Vogelgesang estimated that roughly

half the 10,000-plus square feet of hardwood was sawed into pieces ranging from 12 X 12-inch ($15 each) to 24 X 24-inch ($50) squares. “We took some pieces to storage, but almost half of the floor – the part under the visitors' bleachers – is still in place,” Vogelgesang noted. “We had to leave that part so the work crews could get back in there this week and removed the old asbestos pipes from the ceiling. “We'll have to wait and see what's left undamaged after they're done. But we could be having more gym floor sales in the future, maybe on a once-a-month basis, or something.” Lawrenceburg's athletics director said that pre-orders accounted for about 140 of the one-square foot floor sections. Another 30-35 pieces of 18 X 18-inch squares were presold, along with perhaps 25 of the two-foot squares. “ A couple people ordered 3 X 3-foot sections,” Vogelgesang added. Expected to be a popular seller, and they were, the painted block letters spelling “Lawrenceburg” at the east end of the gym floor were solid individually by silent auction Sunday. Minimum bid was $100, while some select letters went for as much as $300. Surprisingly, it wasn't the letter “L” that drew the top

auction price, but the letter “B.” The letter “A” reportedly sold for around $200. “Those were big sections with the letters on them, close to 4 X 4 feet,” Vogelgesang noted. “But all of them sold.” An unconfirmed rumor said that one welloiled Tiger fan may have missed out on purchasing each of the four letters that would have spelled “B-E-E-R” for his home bar. One area business proved to be a major contributor to the Lawrenceburg boosters and athletic department fund-raiser, purchasing roughly 500 square feet of the old Bateman Gym flooring. Vogelgesang said that, when it became apparent last summer that the 1964 gym addition had a crumbling foundation that called for a major reconstruction project, he and head football coach Ryan Knigga proposed the idea of selling off the hardwood floor. “We knew the project was going to take off soon, and this was always a thought,” he said. Cincinnati Floor Company, which installed the original gym floor in 1964, was consulted to see is sawing up sections would be feasible. “They came in two times,” Vogelgesang said. “At first, we didn't think it was going to work because we thought the floor had been anchored into the concrete (subfloor). But they found that it was basically a floating wood floor, laid nine inches on center and nailed to 2 X 4s. We were able to cut pieces

and keep everything basically intact.” Tiger Pride annually provides $9,000$10,000 to cover the athletic department's awards costs and the purchase of fuel for team buses traveling to road contests. Sunday's receipts should go a long way toward funding those two major expenses in the future. Meanwhile, ground-breaking ceremony for Lawrenceburg's 21st century version of Bateman Gym, a.k.a. “The Bud”, is scheduled for Monday, March 31, at 2 p.m. The project is expected to take from 14 to 16 months.
