Spring Car Care Advice from the professionals: Don’t neglect auto service The average age of a personal vehicle on the road today is more than 11 years, according to recent news reports. In tough economic times, it’s natural to rein in spending. But the experts warn that putting off routine auto maintenance or ignoring service intervals is false economy. Small issues can morph into more expensive repairs. For example, failure to replace worn brake pads or a faulty oxygen sensor -both relatively easy services for qualified auto

technicians -- can result in expensive brake rotor service or costly replacement of the vehicle’s catalytic converter. Frequently neglected items include oil changes, tire and brake service, wheel alignment, air and fuel filters, and transmission service. Besides, a well-maintained vehicle gets better gasoline mileage, pollutes less, is safer to operate, and lasts longer than one that’s neglected. To help consumers choose a repair shop

that fits their needs, see the following checklist:

able methods of payment.

• Look for a neat, wellorganized facility, with vehicles in the parking lot equal in value to your own and modern equipment in the service bays.

• Ask if the repair facility specializes or if it usually handles your type of repair work.

• Look for a courteous staff, with a service consultant willing to answer all of your questions. • Look for policies regarding estimated repair costs, diagnostic fees, guarantees, and accept-

• Look for signs of professionalism in the customer service area, such as civic, community, or customer service awards. • Look for evidence of qualified technicians: trade school diplomas, certificates of advanced course work.

CHIROPRACTIC / ACUPUNCTURE

Q. Dr. Stricker what is a EMG/NCV test?

A. This stands for a electro milogram/nerve conduction velocity test. These tests are commonly performed after having an MRI which may or may not show a problem such as a herniated disc, disc bulge, stenosis, or other problems putting, pressure on the nerve. This testing is commonly done by a neurologist. They measure the nerve Raymond Stricker flow from your back or neck to different points in D.C. FIAMA, Dipl. your legs or arms. If someone has sciatica or AC LLC numbness and pain in their legs or arms, this testing is helpful in determining the cause of the problem. This is very important to determine how to find the correct treatment program to get better. Starting next month, I will have a chiropractic neurologist performing EMG's in my office for diagnostic purposes. This is especially important for documenting the cause of the injury for workers compensation claims, personal injury claims, as well as determining if a referral to another physician such as a surgeon is appropriate. If you have any questions regarding this subject please feel free to contact me.

AUTO COLLISION Paint color match is key to a quality repair.

When a damaged vehicle is brought to Randy Lane's Auto Body Inc. for repairs, our goal is to return the vehicle to its 'preaccident' condition. One of the key issues in returning a vehicle to its pre-accident condition is matching the color of the Ed Gerstner newly painted panels to the rest of the vehicle. The way this is accomplished is by 'blending' the new color into the mating panels. By blending one color into another you create a seamless transition between the new color and the existing color. Even though repairs may not have been performed on the blended panel, this area must still go through the full preparation process for painting, they must be sanded cleaned, masked off to prevent overspray painted/blended, and clear coated. The goal of Randy Lane's Auto Body, Inc is to provide our customers with the highest level of quality craftsmanship and customer service in the industry. We look forward to serving you in the future.

OPTOMETRIST

Q: Dr. Ringel, my eyes seem to burn and itch a lot this spring. What is the cause of this and can anything be done?

A: Your symptoms are very commonly reported in those patients with allergic conjunctivitis. The conjunctiva is a thin, clear layer of tissue that covers the white Michael F. Ringel, O.D. portion of the eye as well as the inside of the upper and lower eyelids. Allergic conjunctivitis is a swelling of this tissue that results from an allergic response. Symptoms may range from mild itching without discharge to a severe reaction where the eye is swollen shut. Recently several ophthalmic medications have been developed which treat this condition very effectively. I routinely prescribe these medications to my patients. There’s no reason to suffer when help is available.

PHARMACIST

Q. I am having trouble sleeping. Can you recommend something?

A. Want a better night's sleep? Sleep in a quiet, dark environment and set the thermostat at a slightly cooler temperature. Don't allow Jeff Biddle pets in the bed. No reading or watching TV in bed. Don't watch the clock. Set a "wind down" time prior to going to bed. Try drinking warm tea or milk to increase your body temperature, which helps induce and sustain sleep. Exercise is good for sleep, but don't exercise within two hours of going to sleep.

MONEY MANAGEMENT Can I grow assets without losing money?

Where can my money grow while keeping it defended? There are only 3 investment vehicles where retirement money can grow, but be defended against losses. They are: 1. CD and Money Market Accounts The national average for a one year CD rate is 0.30% and for a five year CD rate is 1.11%, as of April 16, 2012. The benefit is Roger Ford that the product is backed by FDIC Insurance. However, at such low rates you are not outpacing inflation and taxes. You are losing purchasing power. You are going broke safely! Ben Bernanke has announced the FOMC intend on keeping rates where they are through 2014! 2. Treasury Notes The yield for ten year notes, if held to maturity, is 2.150% as of March 31, 2012. The benefit is treasuries are backed by the full faith and credit of the US government. However, at such a low rate you are not outpacing inflation and taxes. You are losing purchasing power. You are going broke safely! 3. Guaranteed Investment Vehicles Market-Linked CDs with FDIC Insurance and Fixed Index Annuities are backed first by the full faith and credit of the issuing company and second by the state guaranty association. The historical average of a good fixed index annuity, excluding any up-front bonus, is 5-8%. Conservative Financial Solutions clients have learned that guaranteed investments allow for reasonable rates of return (RRR), tax efficiency, reasonable liquidity, and in many cases, guaranteed incomes. The only question you should ask yourself would be are you a Conservative Financial Solutions client? If not, you should call us to move your retirement portfolio into guaranteed and defended retirement savings accounts. No part of this communication should be construed as an offer to sell any security or provide investment advice or recommendation. Securities offered through GF Investment Services, LLC. Member FINRA/SIPC. 2080 Ringling Blvd., Third Floor, Sarasota, FL, 34237. (941) 441.1902. ADVERTISING Q. I want to advertise my business but only have a small budget. What is the best advertisement for my money? A. Let’s say you have $200 to spend in advertising. Rather than to invest in a one-time ad costing $200, it is much better to schedule a series of smaller ads, 4 or 5 weeks at $40-$50 per week. Not only do you build credibility when your business is seen on a continual basis, but you increase your chances of being seen by more readers this way. Call to speak with your local sales representative, Donna Metzger, for more information about placing a business ad.

TAXES

Q. What should I do if I miss the income tax deadline?

A. First and foremost, don’t panic but file as

soon as possible. If you owe money, the quicker you file your return, the less penalties and interest you will have to pay. You should Darren Bowman, CPA pay as much as you can when you file your return, even if it isn’t the total amount due. An application for an installment agreement is available to pay the remaining balance. There are penalties for filing after the due date, and for not paying the entire tax bill. Interest will be assessed on any outstanding balance owed. The IRS could consider reductions in these amounts if you can establish a reasonable cause for the late filing and payment. You will not be charged penalties and interest on a late filed return if you are due a refund. But if your return is not filed within three years, you could forfeit your right to the refund. If you have any questions concerning the late filing of an income tax return, please give us a call.

INSURANCE

Q. Should I buy an umbrella policy? A. On any given day you may be involved in a serious auto accident. You never know if it will be a minor accident or major one involving multiple vehicles. This also means that there could be a variety of injuries to all parties involved. If an accident is your fault, whether minor or major, there is a great chance you could be sued for bodily injury and property damage. If you don’t Roger Ford have enough bodily injury and property damage coverage on your personal automobile policy, an umbrella policy would be beneficial. The umbrella would cover you for an additional $1,000,000 over your personal policy. Most insurance companies do require you to carry a minimum liability limit before you can purchase an umbrella policy and you can purchase limits higher than the $1,000,000 limit. An umbrella policy also protects you over the personal liability limit on your homeowner’s policy. An umbrella policy isn’t just for those people who have major assets to protect because anyone can be held liable for an accident and a lawsuit can be costly to you and your family. Call us, your independent insurance agent for an umbrella quote or any of your insurance needs.
