Leadership Notes

YESTERDAY: In this newsletter, we look upon the past year and celebrate many accomplishments. As we recall these feats, let us always remember to give glory to God for the sustaining gifts and graces that make all our efforts and achievements possible. TODAY: In these summer months we have the opportunity for a little extra recreation and renewal. We take this moment to thank the many people who dedicate so much for the good of our students. We also acknowledge the transitions of today. First, we wish a fond farewell to all the departing staff members, especially our system president Joe Eisenhuth Rev. Brian D. Konopa and elementary principal Erika Johnson. May God reward all of you for your goodness! Secondly, there is much work being done to identify our new leaders and teachers who will hand on the faith and develop the skills and knowledge of our students. Your prayers are most appreciated. FOREVER: Regis will soon begin its 60th year. As we look to the future, we embrace the perpetual mission Christ has given us to hand on the faith to the next generation. As you read the following pages, may you grow in awareness and in confidence for all that Regis Catholic Schools offers, and will continue to offer, with Christ the King as our guiding light. Note From Joe Eisenhuth As the school year comes to a close, there is always much to be thankful for, and my gratitude begins with the people who make Regis Catholic Schools strong: our students, staff, families, and supporting parishes. In a grateful spirit and after much thought and prayer, I’ve reached the decision to conclude my tenure as President of Regis Catholic Schools effective June 30, 2012. While I’m proud to have worked with dedicated staff and supportive families, I believe there are times in every organization where benefit can come from a change in leadership and the infusion of a fresh perspective. Together, we have made great progress. For example, RCS has realized increased enrollment each of the past three years and substantial improvements to our facilities. I’m also excited to see all the plans in place for a brand new Distance Learning Lab at the Regis Campus which will offer a broader variety of core subject and elective classes for our high school students. Other examples of initiatives well-underway include the RCS Teaching & Learning Plan and the RCS System Accreditation process which are generating goals, measurements, and results that will positively impact all classrooms and all students. These improvements help to position RCS for even greater accomplishments in the years to come. I am thankful for the leadership opportunities RCS has provided me. While I gave my best effort to earn your respect and confidence over the past seven years, I trust you will grant the next President of RCS the same opportunity you afforded me as you continue to believe in and support the Core Values of Regis Catholic Schools. Faculty and Staff

Education Commission

Each school day, Regis Catholic Schools serves over 1,100 students from more than 800 families within our early childhood programs, elementary schools, middle school, and high school. In addition, during the school day we have nearly 150 faculty and staff working in our schools, along with many volunteers, each playing a vital role in our mission.

The Education Commission provides input and guidance on various topics and issues to the RCS President, Dean, and supporting Pastors.

To the faculty and staff that play such an important role in the success of the students and the system, we thank you! Please know that we appreciate your love, dedication, and generosity of time to the RCS students and the system.

Parishes Regis Catholic Schools is financially and spiritually supported by local Catholic parishes within the Eau Claire Deanery. These supporting parishes, a part of the Diocese of La Crosse, include Immaculate Conception, Newman Parish at UWEC, Sacred Heart of Jesus - St. Patrick, St. James the Greater, St. Mary’s, and St. Olaf. Regis Fund Update As many of you know, Mr. Bill Uelmen, past principal at Regis, is now working with the RCS Foundation as the Regis Fund Director. We are very thankful for all the efforts Mr. Bill Uelmen has put forth this year. As of June 15th, 2012, he has exceeded the goal for the Regis Fund and has over $128,000 in commitments for this year. Last year, the annual fund only brought in $31,500. That is a $96,500 increase from last year! Mr. Uelmen’s long-standing and substantial connections with alumni and friends of RCS make him especially well-suited for cultivating, soliciting, and securing funds for our Regis Catholic Schools. Thank you for your continued dedication to our Catholic schools!

RCS Faculty and Staff Appreciation Acknowledgement for Service Thank you to the following RCS Faculty and Staff who will not be with us next school year. They have served us well by caring so deeply for our students and school system.

Staff Appreciation

JoAnn Adams has taught over 20 years within RCS at St. Patrick, Sacred Heart, and the last few years at IC in 4th grade. Meeting individual students’ needs was always her strength. Her positive and inquiring mind made her understand the importance of caring for all of our students. We will miss her sense of humor and patience in the classroom. Janet Curley served us at St. Mary’s for two years and St. James for two years. She retired last year from St. James with over 20 years of teaching experience. This year she helped IC significantly through sharing an IC kindergarten classroom with Mrs. Slobodnik. Her strength in teaching reading and writing to the kindergarten class was a great benefit to the students. She was a dedicated contributing faculty member who assisted us with her educational expertise. We appreciated her commitment! Joe Eisenhuth has been a leader for Regis Catholic Schools during the past 7 years - as Principal at Immaculate Conception Elementary School from 2005 to 2008, and the President of Regis Catholic Schools for the past four years. He is most proud of the RCS students and their accomplishments. We wish him the very best as he continues his career in educational leadership – serving as Assistant Principal for North High School. Kat Hanson has worked in a variety of settings as a substitute teacher for RCS and most recently as the 3rd grade teacher at St. James. Ms. Hanson has instrumental ways of connecting with students, finding out what their needs are, and then following through so they reach their goals. Kat easily tackled technology and utilized her Smart Board on a daily basis. We wish her the best in her new 2nd grade classroom at Durand School District. Jennifer Hanson-Bremer taught Language Arts and AP English at Regis High School. Jennifer was known to use multiple teaching and learning strategies to engage the students and promote critical thinking. She built positive relationships with the students and earned their respect and trust as a teacher. We wish her well with her future endeavors.

Richard Jackson taught Math, Physics, and Principles of Engineering at Regis. He was known to tutor many students to help them succeed. Outside of the classroom, he helped with the sound and lighting for plays and events, drove the school bus to many events, and chaperoned dances and events. Richard truly cared about the Regis students and he will be missed.

Erika Johnson has been an educational leader at Regis Catholic Schools for the past 11 years as GuidanceCounselor, Head Volleyball Coach, and most recently the Elementary Principal of St. James and St. Mary’s. She has been instrumental in numerous school improvement initiatives. We wish her the very best as she continues her career in educational leadership - serving as the Elementary Principal for the Durand Public School District. Luke Kempen served as the RCS Business Manager for nearly 4 years and made significant strides to help the system regain financial stability. Luke managed day-to-day financial operations and was also the project manager for major facility updates including the Regis Child Development Center addition and the new heating system at Regis – to be installed this summer. We wish him well with his future endeavors.

Denise Lemke spent 16 years in Catholic education with the last five years teaching third grade at St. Mary’s. She was an essential part of our Regis Catholic Schools teaching staff as she always put her students first and nurtured a love of learning that will have a lasting effect. We will miss her infectious laugh and practical jokes. Her hard work and true commitment to our schools are an example for all to follow and we wish her many blessings throughout her retirement.


Kate Martin has been a cook at St. Mary’s for three years. During that time we enjoyed all the hot meals that she provided for our staff and students. She will be remembered for her immaculate kitchen and diligent work ethic. We wish her the best in all she does.

Holly Moser worked with our K-5 students at all three RCS elementary schools for the past two years as the Elementary Guidance Counselor. She also was the lead Scrip coordinator this year and helped to increase scrip profits for RCS Families and the RCS system over $80,000 from last year. She was always willing to put in extra time to help families and students. Her creativity, caring attitude, and compassion will be greatly missed. We wish her the best of luck. Amanda Risler has 9 years’ experience teaching elementary students and this last year she taught 1st grade at IC. She and her husband, Randy, are expecting their third child. Amanda and Randy decided she should take some time off from teaching to focus on being an at-home mom. Her proficiency teaching language arts and utilizing technology gave her students an excellent knowledge base for second grade. We were blessed to have experienced her positive attitude and daily smiles! Michelle Steagall has been an elementary teacher for 11 years in our Catholic School system teaching at St. Olaf, St. James and most recently as a first grade teacher at Immaculate Conception. Michelle is organized, displays creativity, has high energy levels and holds strong expectations for the students. Her pleasant personality and cheerful enthusiasm were enjoyed by all. Mary Slobodnik has taught for over 30 years in the Catholic School System beginning at St. Patrick. Teaching kindergarten was her passion and she created a caring atmosphere with quality learning practices. Many students over the years fondly remember her classroom as warm and inviting. She will be missed by many.

Laurie Zukaitis graduated from Regis High School in 1975 and returned to Regis in 2008 to teach Religion and Language Arts. She dedicated her career in education to teaching in Catholic schools at McDonell High School and at Regis High School. Laurie also assisted Father James with organizing retreats, helped to set up for Mass, volunteered in co-curricular activities, and was the Pep Club advisor. We wish Laurie well throughout her future endeavors.

Kelly Bowe, Assistant Principal and Teacher at Immaculate Conception School, has been promoted to Principal of St. Mary’s and St. James Elementary Schools. Kelly Bowe will replace Erika Johnson, who was the Principal of both elementary schools for the last 4 years. Many parents have seen their children grow and develop positively while in Kelly Bowe’s classroom. She is known for being able to meet the needs of children at all levels - enhancing their strengths and gently addressing their weaknesses. One parent, Leslie Schuch, transferred her two daughters from another school system to Immaculate Conception and was welcomed into the RCS system by Kelly. Leslie, her husband Mike, and the family are very excited for the system and for Kelly’s opportunity to shine through a new role, “Kelly Bowe’s passion for helping all students, both as a teacher and an organizational leader, will make her an excellent Principal at St. Mary’s and St. James. She is a positive force for good in all she does, inspiring everyone around her.”

Staff Appreciation

Jean Miller has been a part of Regis Catholic Schools for the past 11 years as a Secretary at both St. Olaf and St. Mary’s Elementary Schools. Jean has a genuine kindness and patience that has allowed her to serve our school community with ease and a caring smile. We wish Jean the best in her retirement as she is looking forward to spending time with her husband, their 8 children, and 12 grandchildren. It looks like Jean will still be busy!

RCS Teaching and Learning Plan Our Teaching and Learning Plan is designed to help RCS improve curriculum, programs, faculty and staff development opportunities, and system communications.

System Updates

System Accreditation Update Since the summer of 2011, RCS has been working on the RCS System Accreditation through the AdvancED organization, as a part of the RCS Teaching and Learning Plan. The accreditation process provides a framework for how we improve all areas of our school system and provides a review of the quality of our school system. It is how many students, families, college recruiters, and government groups know with certainty that Regis Catholic Schools provides a quality education. Currently and throughout this next school year, RCS staff, student, and parents will be completing surveys to help us access what works well and what should be improved from an accreditation perspective. This will prepare RCS for an accreditation visit.

Math Curriculum Update Through the Teaching and Learning Plan, the Math Curriculum was the first of our core K-12 Curriculum to be addressed. RCS aligned the K-12 math curriculum with the national Common Core Standards, which 33 states now follow. Teachers were chosen from each school to work on the math curriculum. Next year, RCS will assess the new standards in the classrooms and make changes where it is needed. Advanced math classes in middle school and Statistics in high school have also been added to the course offerings.

Faculty & Staff Professional Development

Through the Teaching and Learning Plan, the Professional Development Committee developed training specifically for Diocesan Religious Certification throughout the K-12 system. We also worked on developing the necessary training for the alignment and assessments of the math curriculum and language arts updates.

Communications Update In the fall of 2011, RCS hired Anna Sizer to be the new Communications Director and assist with improving internal and external system communications. RCS Alumni, Friends, Staff, and Current Families will begin to see four newsletters per year. In October, RCS will publish its first ever Annual Report. The other newsletters will be timed for winter, spring, and end-of-school year. You may also sign up for weekly email newsletters to view information emailed to current families.

Episcopal Update Since the 2009-2010 school year, Regis Catholic Schools has been working to find ways to financially sustain the RCS system. On January 25th, 2012 Bishop Callahan announced a plan to restructure Regis Catholic Schools while keeping all the school buildings open. On February 8th, 2012 the Diocese of La Crosse provided an update to that announcement. The update stated that further study and discussions were needed between the Episcopal Commission and the pastors. During the months of February and March, the pastors met with each of the four committees that comprised the full membership of the Episcopal Commission. As a group, the pastors met several times thereafter to develop recommendations for Bishop Callahan. On May 11th, the pastors met with Bishop Callahan to discuss their findings and new insights. While a quick decision is preferred, care is also needed. Your prayer and patience are appreciated as we work through this important process.

Regis Campus Heating System In June 2009, the State of Wisconsin issued a three-year permit to operate the boilers at the Regis Campus. At that time, the State told RCS that they would not renew the permit after it expired in 2012 due to the deteriorating condition of the boilers. Therefore, RCS had to replace the boilers at the Regis Campus by June 2012. RCS determined that the best approach was to replace the existing boilers with two new boilers, and to upgrade the heating system infrastructure in the boiler room. This summer, the upgrades will be connected to the existing system piping that leads to the heat units in each room.


Distance Learning Lab Regis High School is installing a Distance Learning Lab this summer at Regis. In partnership with CESA 10, Regis students in grades 9-12 will be offered classes that could not otherwise be offered at Regis. The classes will be broadcast from other high schools, tech schools, and colleges. With this lab, Regis students will be able to listen to the teacher and interact with many other students taking the classes throughout the network.

In addition, Regis is assessing which classes it will be able to offer in future years to other schools in the CESA 10 network. By offering some classes in the future, the year-to-year cost for Regis is offset.

Replace Network Switches The current wireless internet access at Regis is weak and does not adequately support the increased use of tablets and mini-laptops. This summer, Regis is replacing the network switches throughout the school so that there is 100% wireless internet access in each classroom and in all common areas. This will also allow the public to have Wi-Fi access for events held at Regis. We are putting the infrastructure in place to help support more wireless technology usage throughout the classrooms in the future.

Pastor Changes within our RCS Supporting Parishes Recently, Bishop Callahan has made a number of new assignments for diocesan clergy which takes effect June 26, 2012. With grateful hearts we wish a fond farewell to Father Dhein, Father Kurzynski, and Father Redfern. Thank you for being part of the RCS family and for all the support you have provided. Farewell Father Dhein Fr. Bill Dhein is leaving Sacred Heart - Saint Patrick Parish for a chancery position in La Crosse (Defender of the Bond in the Matrimonial Tribunal) as well as pastor of St. Mary Parish, Coon Valley, and St. Charles Borromeo Parish, Genoa.

System Updates

The funding to complete the heating system came from a recent endowment for Regis High School. Other than the 60-year old heating system, the overall Regis building is in relatively good condition. While continued maintenance and upkeep will be needed annually, the building should be serviceable for many more years.

Farewell Father Kurzynski Fr. James Kurzynski is leaving Regis and St. Raymond of Penafort Parish (Brackett) for Roncalli Newman Parish in La Crosse, which also serves the campus of the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse. He will continue as associate Vocation Director. Farewell Father Redfern Fr. Joseph Redfern is leaving St. Mary’s (Altoona) for St. Francis Parish in Necedah and Our Lady of the Lake Parish in Germantown/Castle Rock. To Father Paul Hoffman, Father Derek Sakowski, and Father Georgekutty “George” Thayilkuzhithottu we welcome you into the RCS family and look forward to meeting you. Welcome Father Paul Hoffman Fr. Paul Hoffman will be our new chaplain at Regis. He will also be the Associate Pastor at St. James Parish with Fr. John Schultz continuing as the pastor. After 35 years in the business world and questioning what he would do after retiring, he heard God’s call to the priesthood, retired early in 2005, and was ordained in 2010. Welcome Father Derek Sakowski Fr. Derek Sakowski is coming to St. Mary’s and St. Raymond. It will be his first pastorate. He recently earned a doctorate while studying in Rome and is looking forward to his first pastorate. Welcome Father Georgekutty “George” Fr. Georgekutty Thayilkuzhithottu is moving from St. Stanislaus, Stevens Point, to Sacred Heart - St. Patrick. His current parish is sad to see him leaving. That’s a good sign for Sacred Heart - St. Patrick! “Father George” hails from India.

RCS Child Development Centers RCS has two Child Development Centers - Regis and Genesis - for children from 6 weeks to 12 years old. Many wonderful updates and events have happened this year!

Child Development Centers

New Curriculum Our faith-based programs follow a new curriculum that centers on social emotional development; Positive Behaviors Interventions and Supports (PBIS). Classroom staff focus on teaching children the social and emotional skills they need to express their feelings, solve conflicts with peers, and develop friendships. In each of the classrooms, teachers carefully plan activities that help children learn these concepts. Most importantly, teachers look for moments throughout the day when they can guide children to use these skills in their interactions with adults and peers. Young children thrive in a setting where expectations are clear and consistent. Goals and processes have been set across each center, teachers have been trained, and plans for each classroom have been implemented. Teachers keep data on how each child is doing and provide support to students that need it. Within the first few months of implementation, we have noticed a significant difference in improved behavior and learning.

Beach Day In late March, our Regis Child Development Center (RCDC) EC4T classroom learned about the ocean and what is in the ocean. To conclude the curriculum chapter and to take a much needed “spring break,” they held their annual BEACH DAY! The entire RCDC center was decorated for a Hawaiian Luau and every room had a pool. All children brought in their beach gear and enjoyed a whole day-at-the-beach. 10

Week of the Young Child The Week of the Young Child is an annual celebration to focus on the needs of young children and their families. This year, Clifford the Big Red Dog came to visit the children during the Scholastic Book Fair to promote literacy.

Community Vehicles It is important for children to learn about the community. The Community Vehicle event at Genesis Child Development Center (GCDC) was an opportunity for the children to see these city service vehicles up close and learn about the valuable service they provide.

Regis Building Update The addition to the Regis Child Development Center is complete and we are just putting in the final landscaping. The additional space, security, and improved play area provided by the remodel was much needed. We are grateful for the support from our local community, local businesses, and for our families’ patience during the new underpass and Highway 53 construction.

Friday, May 11, all three Regis Catholic Schools elementary students joined together for the Walk for Virtues, RCS’s main Elementary fundraiser. Students sought out pledges to walk around Carson Park and raise money for their elementary school. We know Christ possesses all the virtues to perfection. During the school year we studied the virtues and how we walk with Christ by living the virtues. The virtues were: Faith, Hope, Love, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Gentleness, Self-Control, and Justice. Nothing was sold for this fundraiser; students were excited to earn money for their school. The fundraiser was a huge success, with over $37,900 going directly to the elementary schools that raised the cash. Wow! There are few expenses related to the event and money is being used for Smartboards, iPads, Field trip transportation costs, and classroom/teacher resources. 12

Special Middle School Honors RMS 8th grader Taylor Peterson has been accepted into the WSMA State Middle Level Honors Choir, and 8th grader Regan Alexander has been chosen as an alternate for both the soprano section of the choir and for the flute section of the honors band. This is a very competitive program, with only a small number of students being chosen as members and as alternate members of the ensembles. Congratulations Taylor and Regan! There were 66 students honored at the Eighth Grade Promotion Program in the Father Dowd Auditorium at Regis on May 31. Music Department The Regis Band, Choir, and practice rooms have been remodeled and the students love it! In April, several RMS and RHS music students participated in the Wisconsin School Music Association’s annual Solo and Ensemble Festival, with nine students advancing to the State Festival at UWEC. The Regis Jazz Band performed at the UWEC Jazz Fest and was the winner for the fourth year running. The Regis Jazz Band performed at North High School auditorium after the competition as the division winner. The RHS Choir also participated in the WSMA Large Group Choral Festival, where they received a perfect rating of 1 - the best score a choir can receive! This is also the sixth time in six years, that Regis has received the highest rating possible for this festival! Also in April, the RHS Music Department embarked on a music trip to Nashville, Tennessee. The students worked with guest clinicians at Vanderbilt University and recorded a professional CD at the legendary Studio B, where Elvis Presley and many other famous artists recorded their music. They also toured many popular landmarks and venues such as the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Ryman Auditorium, and the Grand Ole Opry. Mr. Walk, the Band Director, said, “Next year’s student band member numbers look off the charts with an anticipated 10 to 20 percent growth in students projected. We only lost a small number of seniors this year.” He continued, “I can only see great things for the music program going forward. Our student talent in both choir and band is crazy good here at Regis and I cannot wait to get back to work next fall!”

High School

At the end of April, 33 members of the RHS Forensics team competed at the WHSFA State festival in Madison. The team captured one bronze, eight silver, and 14 gold medals in their various events, making them the highest scoring Forensics team at Regis in the last decade.

National Honor Society The past year saw NHS members at Regis giving back in a big way to the community through organized fundraisers and community service projects including creating a Christmas CD, hosting a variety show, selling cookbooks, and selling Fair Trade items just to name a few. Recipients of the more than $8,000 in donations from NHS projects included the Hope Gospel Mission, Bob’s House For Dogs, Sojourner House, and many others.

Softball The softball team finished with an overall record of 9-7. Their 7-7 conference record put them in 6th place. All-Conference players were Jessica Wirz (1st team) and Rachel Liming (2nd team). Their season ended with a loss to Elk Mound. Boys Track & Field The boys track team placed 1st at the conference meet. They were led by double conference champions Bobby Mickelson (Long Jump & Triple Jump), Sam Loftsgaarden (200 and 4 X 200 Relay anchor) & Khadel Akindolire (100 and 4 X 100 Relay anchor). State qualifiers included Bobby Mickelson, Sam Loftsgaarden, Khadel Akindolire, Hayden Frey, Chad Licht and Michael Maenner. Girls Track & Field The girls track team placed 1st at the conference meet. They were led by double conference champions Sydney Alexander (1600 & 3200), and JoHannah Theisen (Shot Put & Discus). Katie Stone (110 Dash) and Alexis Papke (High Jump) along with the 4 X 100 Relay and 4 X 200 Relay were also conference champions. State qualifiers included Sydney Alexander, JoHannah Theisen, Katie Stone, Hannah Ottevaere, Danielle Zwiefelhofer, Brooke Bergeman and Rachel Stone.

Baseball The Ramblers Boys Baseball team was the only team to defeat conference champion Altoona but unfortunately, they were also the only team to lose to Black River Falls, giving the Tigers their only victory of the year. The Ramblers finished third in the conference with a 9-5 record and 13-13 overall. All-Conference players were Paul Kress and Sawyer Sturz (1st team) and Nick Stanke (2nd team). After defeating Colfax in the first round of tournament play, the Ramblers’ season ended with a 9-4 loss to Prescott.

Girls Soccer The girls soccer team plays independently with no conference affiliation. They had an excellent season finishing with a record of 10-4-3. Their record earned them the number one seed in the WIAA tournament. They finished the season one step away from state, losing in the sectional final game. Boys Golf The boys golf team was young this year with all freshmen and sophomore competitors. They placed 7th in the conference. They were led by sophomore Allen Krueger who made second team all-conference. Boys Tennis The boys tennis team won the conference tournament on the rackets of three conference champions, Marcus Bogumill (No. 2 Singles), Victor Bourget (No. 4 singles), and Nolan Rodriquez and Michael Kuznar (No. 3 doubles). The team had a dual meet record of 7-0 and placed first in the conference. The Ramblers missed qualifying for team state by two points. However, the doubles teams of Brian Gobler/Michael Kozuch and Garrett Nowak/Scott Strand qualified to compete at the state individual meet in Madison.

Father Thomas Donaldson Remembered Father Thomas Joseph Donaldson, at the age of 73 and a priest for 44 years, died on Saturday, April 21, 2012, in Holmen, WI. Father Donaldson was born on February 3, 1939, in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, to Ralph and Josephine (née Monarski) Donaldson. He attended St. Patrick Elementary School and Regis High School. Father Donaldson served the Western Wisconsin area through various parish assignments and is remembered for his courage, love for God and his people.

We would also like to recognize Nancy Klein, a past principal of St. Mary’s in Altoona, who died in February of this year.

St. Bede Monastary Sold to UWEC Foundation Inc. In October of 2011, the Sisters of the Order of Saint Benedict announced the sale of St. Bede Monastery to a subsidiary of the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire Foundation Inc. The first intended use of St. Bede’s by the university is as the relocation site for the current Children’s Center. Campus School, which housed the Children’s Center, was razed in spring 2012 to make way for the university’s Education Building project. The university had been planning to build a new Children’s Center next to the Human Sciences and Services building on Water Street. However, bids for the project, which opened August 10, had exceeded the available $3.8 million budget. More information about how the St. Bede property will be used can be found on the university’s website: www.uwec.edu.

Alumni Updates Sister Mary Frances Gebhard ’50 and Sister Monica Mai ’51 celebrated their 60th anniversaries of religious service on April 21, 2012 in the Sacred Heart Chapel at St. Benedict’s Monastery in St. Joseph, MN. Sr. Gebhard joined the St. Bede Monastery at age 18 and served in several nursing and leadership positions at hospitals in Durand and Eau Claire for many years and was also subprioress at St. Bede before moving to St. Benedict Monastery in 2010. She currently lives at St. Scholastica Convent in St. Cloud, MN. Sr. Mai began her monastic life as a teacher and taught at Regis High School. She also served as prioress of St. Bede Monastery and vice president of the Benedictine Federation and in the pastoral care department at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire. She lived at St. Bede’s in Eau Claire before moving to St. Benedict’s Monastery in 2011. Pete McCann ’84, best known as a Jazz Guitarist, accompanied Patti Austin’s concert at the New York Pops Orchestra this year. He appears on 72 cds, four of which are his own compositions. He and his wife live in New York and they have two sons.

Mark Hawn ’01 and Sarah Emmer were married on March 24, 2012 in Big Sky, MT. Mark is a dentist in Sandpoint, ID and his new wife is pursuing a nursing degree. Brian Uelmen ’02 is opening an American Family Insurance Agency in Madison, WI in June. Brian graduated from Edgewood College in Madison, is married, and has a son. Steve Ridenour ’06 and Claire Casey ’07 will be married in Eau Claire on July 14, 2012. Claire has a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN and is a first grade teacher at Carrolltowne Elementary School in Sykesville, MD. Steve has a degree from the University of Notre Dame, South Bend, IN and is pursuing a dental degree from the University of Maryland in Baltimore. Jennifer Dewitz ’07 and Kevin Stark announced their engagement. Jennifer has a bachelor’s degree in biology from UWMadison and a bachelor’s degree in nursing from UW-Eau Claire. A June wedding at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Altoona is planned.

Andrew Marjala ’01 and his wife Jessica are the proud parents of their first child Amelia Rae Marjala. Amelia Rae arrived on February 20, 2012. Andrew is a Pharmacist in Minneapolis. Both he and his wife are avid Twins fans.

Kathleen Geraghty ’07 and Derek Ausman ’08 will be married at Immaculate Conception Church in Eau Claire on June 30, 2012. Kathleen has a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of St. Thomas, St. Paul and is currently a substitute teacher in the Twin Cities metro area. Derek has an associate degree in automotive repair technology from Anoka Technical College. He works as an automotive technician in Champlin, MN. Kathryn West ’09 is a Pilot with the Army ROTC. Cadet West recently spent a semester in Russia and is with the ROTC through the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, MN.

Financial Update As many of you know, RCS has been working diligently to respond to the financial challenges that face Regis Catholic Schools today. With the help of the Comprehensive Advancement Model, we are making progress in ensuring financial stability while continuously improving the opportunities for our students.

Through enhancing enrollment management practices, improving giving programs, developing relationships, and realigning system personnel, we have been able to make significant progress! In October and in collaboration with the Foundation, Regis Catholic Schools, will produce its first ever Annual Report. So many have already come forward in support of our Catholic Schools. Thank you to everyone that has worked in partnership with RCS.

Because of your prayers, spirit of volunteerism, words in support of, or donations toward our Catholic schools, RCS is improving financial efficiencies, increasing educational opportunities for students, and creating a sustainable future.

Scrip Update For those of you unfamiliar with Scrip, it is a gift card fundraising program. RCS buys gift certificates from local and national retailers at a discount, and then sells them at face value. The profits are split 50-50 between RCS and current families. Current families can use Scrip credits toward their family and tuition fees. Many families budget their groceries, gas, clothing, dining, gifts, and travel with Scrip cards. Relatives and friends can also participate in this program to help current families in the system. For Example: RCS buys $100 Kwik Trip gas cards for $90. RCS sells you that $100 Kwik Trip gas card for $100. Then, $5 will be credited to the RCS family fees or tuition and $5 will go to RCS. Families can reduce their tuition and fees with this program. We are excited to share with you that RCS has surpassed three million dollars in Scrip sales! In 2011-2012, Scrip sales generated over $100,000 in tuition and family fee credits for participating families. RCS encourages more families to participate in the Scrip program. Your participation helps the RCS system and you as a participating family.

The Cost of Education Partnership is an annual giving program seeking contributions from Current RCS Families. The COEP program informs and educates all RCS families about the actual cost of education to attend Regis Catholic Schools. We hope each current RCS family will consider making a charitable commitment above and beyond the stated tuition to help meet the actual cost of their child’s education. For 2011-2012, the COEP program received gifts ranging from $20 to $10,412, and we had over $127,000 in commitments. Thank You! Whether your family can offer a $20 commitment or a $10,000 commitment, we thank current families for partnering with RCS in support of your child’s education. The Regis Fund was set up to help preserve the legacy of our Catholic schools, and keep Regis Catholic Schools thriving for the future leaders of tomorrow. Charitable gifts, typically ranging from $20 to $10,000, made to the Regis Fund are considered unrestricted and enhance curriculum, materials, and programs for our students that we are unable to fund through other revenue sources. For the 2011-2012 school year, the Regis Fund received over $128,000 from 600 Alumni, Past Parents, and Friends. Thank you! Targeted Major Gifts (TMG) for Major Donors -$10,000+ over a 3 to 5 Year PeriodThe Regis Catholic Schools Foundation, in partnership with RCS, is involved in a Targeted Major Gifts program. The Targeted Major Gifts program is a giving program that seeks major gifts, typically $10,000 to $25,000 and more, that can be paid over a period of three to five years. The charitable commitments realized from the TMG program will be recorded as either non-restricted gifts to enhance the Foundation’s financial standing to support Regis Catholic Schools – or restricted gifts in support of specific Regis Catholic Schools programs or projects as identified by donor(s) and approved by the System Administration.
