The Spirit of Giving
THE Spirit of Christmas and the precious gift of giving was celebrated in Weipa on Saturday night at a fundraiser held for a local family facing a not so merry festive season. Thirty four year-old, mother of three Jayleen Slack was recently diagnosed with cancer and her friends went into overdrive to organise a fundraising event for her family at the Weipa Bowls Club on Saturday night. Hundreds of people turned up to support the event as Jayleen and her family prepare to engage in a battle of epic proportions. Organisers were shocked and amazed at the generosity of the Weipa community and said “the support and love was unimaginable – words cannot explain. “She has an enormous battle ahead and the town wants to let her know she is not alone and have shown they are behind her, sending positive thoughts and prayers.” Jayleen and her husband Malcolm thanked everyone involved for their support and hope with the money raised on Saturday night to spend some quality time with their children at the Gold Coast. “An account has been set up at QCCU BSB 704 640 461214. AT least half a dozen Cape York cattle stations have been without landline telephone communications for several months, according to Watson’s River Station’s Brooke Barton. Brooke’s family, who also own and operate the Weipa Caravan Park and Camping Ground have only been able to communicate intermittently by phone between the two properties since August this year, and since November have been relying on internet communication. “The trouble began in August when the phone service at Watson River Station became intermittent and it has continued to deteriorate since then,” Brooke said. “Since October we have only had landline phone access from the station for around one hour a day.” The limited service is not confined to Watson River Sta-
tion as Brooke discovered when trying to contact other Cape York stations to check on their phone services. “As far as I know there are around half a dozen stations with extremely limited landline services which is just not acceptable, particularly when mobile service is unavailable on most properties.” Brooke’s major concern is the isolation of stations caused by the oncoming wet season will be exacerbated by the inability to communicate, particularly in times of emergency. “Although Broadband services to the stations are still operating at this stage, a lot of the remote stations are run by older couples who may not have the skills to access the internet in order to communicate with the outside world,” Brooke said. “In the case of an accident having landline phone access for only one hour a day could have dire consequences.”

Brooke and her mother Doreen Quartermaine have contacted Telstra on “at least 15 occasions” regarding the problem to be told “we are waiting on a part”. “I understand that people who live on stations in Cape York have made the conscious decision to live in a remote region and accept they have to make some sacrifices, but we are paying for a service which has been pretty much nonexistent for months,” Brooke said. This week Brooke appealed to Member for Cook, David Kempton for assistance and also the Federal Minister for Communications Malcolm Turnbull. “David was outraged that the problem had existed for so long – telling me ‘if this happened in Canberra it would be front page news and there would be hell to pay’,” Brooke said. “I spoke to Shannon in Mr Turnbull’s office who was

extremely helpful, and has told me that if I don’t get any satisfaction from Telstra by Thursday (December 19) to contact her and she will pursue the issue further.” Brooke told the Bully she had discovered there was legislation governing the time frame deemed acceptable for issues such as this but unfortunately has been unable to find out what that time frame is for the Cape York region. “Whatever that time frame is I can’t imagine three months or more is an acceptable period to be without landline telephone access anywhere, let alone on a remote cattle station.” David Kempton has asked anyone on Cape York stations experiencing Telstra landline issues to send me their name, phone number and the number of days and and how many times in the past 12 months they have been without a phone to cook@parliamnet.qld.gov.au

Health merger an insult: TSC Mayor Pedro Stephens at Bowlies! WHAT’S ON...
THE management of Torres Strait health services will be thrown back 40 years, says Torees Shire Council Mayor Pedro Stephen in response to Queensland Government Health Minister Lawrence Springborg’s announcement last week, proposing the merging of Cape York and Torres Strait–Northern Peninsula Hospital and Health Services. Mr Springborg said his announcement on December 4, was in part due to fact that the Torres Strait had been without a health board for some time and he is sugar coating this merger saying it would result in “stronger governance, better representation and ultimately, improved patient services.” TSC Mayor Stephen said: “This announcement throws the plight for community control in managing and delivering health services in our regions back 40 years. “It is an insult for the hard work and advocacy for community control by our past elders and leaders. If the Minister thinks he can improve the health service by remote control he is terribly wrong,” he said. The government has asked Cape York Hospital and Health Service Board Chair Bob McCarthy to develop a plan as to how to move forward with the merger, which could be in place as soon as mid 2014. Torres News asked Queensland Health if this decision would result in this new merged Board meeting and making decisions outside of the region, as Bob McCarthy is based in Weipa. locations in the two regions.’’ Mayor Stephen who was a Chair of the Torres Health Partnership, a ministerial body created under a Bi-lateral Agreement signed by both State and Federal Health Ministers, is “bitterly disappointed” that the Health Minister has reneged on his commitment for the community leaders to transition onto the Torres Strait Health and Hospital Board. “The bureaucratic process to recruit community representation onto the Board failed. This is because it is a very insensitive foreign process we as leaders have addressed officially by getting a prior commitment from the Minister to the people of Torres Strait People through the partnership to ensure continuity and protect our love ones,” Mayor Stephen said. “This has always been the cry of our people to stop bureaucrats ill advising the Ministers to do what the administration wants rather then what community voters need. “We have very qualified Torres Strait Islander professors, Phd doctorates, doctors, nurses, managers, lawyers, teachers and businessmen excluded through this bureaucratic process who will become involved to support
our community with community leaders through a culturally appropriate process. Mayor Stephen is worried the merger will run the risk of putting unqualified people with little or no experience in Torres Strait culture on the Board inappropriately. Mr Springborg said: “Combining the two health services will result in a single, efficient administrative structure, reduce unnecessary duplication and allow the health service to put more focus on delivering quality health care.” This ‘new’ idea of one executive management team and a single board representing the whole region harks back to the 1990’s when a similar system was in place. Apparently this new Board is to have an equal spread of members from the Cape York and the Torres Strait and Northern Peninsula communities, potentially further reducing the decision making power of each region to maintain their own autonomy.

Mr Springborg is suggesting that under these ‘reforms’, “the new combined health service will enable Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and remote communities in Cape York to have a greater voice, a greater scale of operation and more control of their health services.” Secretary of FNQ Branch of the Australian Workers Union, Peter Gunsberger said to Torres News he suspected this merger is not about creating a better service but rather cost cutting. “The scary thing is with this merger is that there will be less local input into decision making. Whether this merger happens or not, its part of the

“They already cooperate with each other and with the Cairns and Hinterland HHS on a number of matters, including the delivery of specialist outreach clinical services,” Mr Springborg said. TSC Mayor Stephen said: “I believe the Health Minister has been poorly advised by his health administrative and clinical experts and hope he is to ready to shoulder the responsibility of thus decision in the future.

Western Cape Cultural Centre closured during Christmas period
THIS year’s Christmas lights competition saw the Weipa community light up the town with a record number of entries. Hundreds of children around town came out to say hello to Santa in the fire truck and receive lollies from Santa’s helpers last Wednesday evening. The winner of this year’s competition was the home of Dave and Lisa Hill at 36 Alstonia Drive in Nanum who received a $100 gift voucher for Woolworths. Second place went to 7 Awonga Crt Rocky Point receiving a $50 gift voucher, and third place was a tie between 28 Fairway Avenue and 6 Embley St in Trunding. Each will receive a $30 gift voucher.

Entertainment THE owner of the Heritage Resort in Weipa Graham Strang received a rude awakening last Thursday morning when he discovered vandals had paid his establishment an overnight visit. The resort’s recently refurbished swimming pool was a scene of destruction after bags of cement, potting mix, chlorine and cement where hurled into it, along with mattresses and every piece of garden furniture from the poolside area. “This is just devastating,” a furious Mr Strang said as he began the clean-up process. “I’ve had to hire a pump to
empty the pool so I can clean it thoroughly, and the coping has been smashed in several places so that will have to be replaced. . . not to mention the furniture.” The vandals also gained access to the resort’s restaurant and took two brand new quad bikes, which were stored in the area overnight, for a “joy ride”. “They didn’t get too far as the quads had no fuel in them,” Mr Strang said. “One of them was left inside the restaurant and the other one was abandoned in the car park at the rear of the resort.” After helping themselves to the buffet breakfast which was laid out in readiness for in-house guests, the intruders

Karla joins elite PhD list By Aaron Smith
Karla Canuto grand daughter of famous Thursday Islander rita Mills, graduated with a PhD in august 2013. She joins a list of less than 200 Indigenous australians who hold a PhD, joining Professor Martin Nakata was the first Torres Strait Islander to receive one. After growing up in Weipa with parents John and Lynda Fell, Karla eventually relocated to Adelaide where she graduated from the University of South Australia. K a r l a ’s P h D p r o j e c t involved the evaluation of a group fitness program for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women. The program was based on the ‘Women’s Fitness Challenge’ conducted on Thursday Island in 2007 with the help of Karla’s Queensland Health colleagues, Marissa Arnot, Danielle Charles and Kath

McFarlane. “We thought the Women’s Fitness Challenge had great potential to improve the health of women so the trial I conducted for my PhD set out to prove that. We found the program helped women lose weight and the more classes they attended, the better their results, including their insulin
and blood glucose control,” she said. The initial program on Thursday Island ran for eight weeks and had 23 participants, the programme was then refined in Adelaide. The results are published in peer reviewed journals and the 12-week program is now available as a free resource
Carols by candlelight . . . with a Cape York twist ST luke’s Church in Weipa will be holding Carols by Candlelight on Christmas Eve but don’t expect a traditional experience. Reverand Ron Watson and his band of merry volunteers have been busy scripting what could best be described as “a Christmas play, with a difference”. “I want to tell the story of Christmas but make it fun, particularly for the children,” Rev. Watson said. “We have written a play (entitled ‘The Christmas Story – as you’ve never heard it before’) that includes traditional Christ-
mas carols, but also features an unusual array of characters that should keep people of all ages entertained.” Carols commence at 6.30pm on Christmas Eve and those attending are asked to come as a “Christmas character”. There will also be tinsel available to wear at the church for those who wish to add an extra bit of sparkle to their outfit. Following the quirky play and carol singing everyone is invited to enjoy smoko at the church. A more traditional Christmas service will be held at St Luke’s on Christmas Day at 9.15am.

Karla believes the main obstacle in getting Indigenous woman involved in physical excersise is that, “it needs to be run by Indigenous people, so that the participants feel safe and can trust the instructor.” She believes the necessary cultural shift towards doing exercise is already underlying in Indigenous communities and has been occurring slowly for the past ten years. “We need to draw our attention to health promotion. This health program is cheap to run and only needs a certificate IV trainer to conduct it. So it wouldn’t take much effort to get this running, its really doable and really cost effective, especially considering the cost diabetes and our lifestyle diseases has on our communities.”
Lockhart River students rewarded with new Christmas bikes

PEDAL POWER: Forty Lockhart River State School students received an early Christmas reward for consistent school attendance.
FORTY Lockhart River State School students have been rewarded with new bicycles for Christmas in a joint initiative by the local school and shipping company Sea Swift to improve school attendance. In a bid to raise school attendance from as low as 49 per cent, the school came up with an incentive of new bikes for children who could attain 95 per cent attendance for the fourth term of 2013. And after a free offer of freight by Sea Swift to deliver the bikes to Lockhart River, the 40 successful children were rewarded with their bikes last week.
“None of the students have bicycles, so we thought it would be a really good effective way of increasing class attendance,” said Mr McSweeney. “The thought of having new shiny pink bikes for girls and blue for boys for Christmas turned out to be a masterstroke. “Some students even ended up getting 100 per cent attendance, which was fantastic to see. “The reaction from the students was wonderful – most students have never owned a bike, let alone a new one.” Mr McSweeney said the school purchased 70 bikes and ended up giving out 40.
“We think this is a pretty good achievement to begin with,” he said. “The students got $5 ‘Lockhart dollars’ each day, and a further $5 for staying in class and being on time. “Thanks to Sea Swift, and particularly the generosity of sales and marketing manager Victor Perazza, we were able to afford to buy 70 bikes. “The rest will be used next year, and instead of one term’s attendance, we will be extending the initiative over two terms. “We hope that this will now lead to long-term sustainability in attendance.”
Heart-starters installed at Weipa community facilities DEFIBRILLATORS have been installed at the Weipa Aquatic Centre and the Hibberd Library thanks to a generous donation by Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa. The two automated external defibrillators (AED) are equipped with child kits allowing use on children under 12 and even babies. An AED is a portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses the potentially life threatening cardiac arrhythmias in a patient which can lead to a heart attack. The portable machine is able to treat them through the application of electrical therapy which stops the arrhythmia, allowing the heart to re-establish an effective rhythm. With simple audio and visual commands, AEDs are designed for use by almost anyone providing verbal commands and instructions upon opening the device. The use of AEDs is taught in many first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation classes. Weipa lifeguards have been

The history of Coen

The name of the town of Coen is said to have been derived from the Cape York Peninsula river of the same name. The river was originally named by the Dutch navigator Jan Carstensz, during his 1623 voyage through the region, in honour of the then Governor of the Dutch East Indies. In the period following the Palmer River gold rush, from around 1873, further explorations to the north by a number of parties, eventually led to the discovery of alluvial gold on the Coen River. An access track was surveyed and cut through from Battle Camp in 1878 and by July of that year there were more than five hundred miners on the field. Coen’s population was to fluctuate during this early period with its isolation an on-going challenge to the town’s growth and development. Later, in the 1880s the area was made available for pastoral leases which, together with the harvesting of sandalwood, provided a welcome boost to the town’s economy. Mining however was still the main industry in the region and, as a consequence, the Coen Goldfield was officially

Evidencing its growth and prosperity during this early period, the town had soon attracted a school, a school of arts, three hotels, a post and telegraph office as well as a range of shops and businesses. As gold mining declined from around the 1930s, Coen still remained an important administrative and social centre for the surrounding Cape York communities. Also, during the Second World War, Coen was an important part of the forward defence network. Isolation was however still a challenge,

When the Lord returned to heaven he promised a helper who is the holy Spirit, and his arrival will show how much God wants people to escape the torments of hell and go to heaven where there is no more sickness, suffering, and death. Imagine, the full power of the Trinity of God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit is being used to help us to live righteous lives down here and then to live forever in God’s presence in heaven. God is pulling out all the stops to ensure we have the means to be over-comers of all that is stopping us from being all he wants us to be here in this world in preparation for the next. The Holy Spirit helps us to change
in particular in regard to communication, with one of the last pack horse runs in Queensland operating out of Coen as late as the 1950s. As well, until the 1960s, when the Weipa-Bamaga area was developed, Coen was the most northerly town on Cape York Peninsula. The photograph above, dating from around 1905, shows the Great Northern Mine at Coen. Today, Coen remains an important regional service centre for the various communities in the area, local pastoralists as well as supporting the area’s tourist industry.

Folk festival invites Cape York culture Two Cape York dance troupes have been invited to perform at this year’s woodford Folk Festival. The Injinoo dancers, now well known throughout the Cape, nationally and even internationally, will be sharing local dance and culture along with the Pompuraaw Dance Troupe. The festival, held on the Sunshine Coast Hinterland on Jinibara country, is a week-long celebration of indigenous and folk culture, attracting patrons from across the country and around the world. This year we will see two dance groups from the Cape representing Cape cultures at the prestigious festival. “It’s a great opportunity to not only promote our region and our culture, but also influence positive life choices for our youths,” NPARC Youth Services Coordinator Roy Blanco said, “as about 70 per cent of the troupe are aged between 13 and 25 years. “Being a part of the troupe means they have to make positive choices, and they have the

Slack Family Fundraiser organisers say thank you The organisers wish to congratulate the community of Weipa for the absolutely outstanding contribution that made the Slack Family Fundraiser such a success, with a special mention to Goodline and Albatross Bay Dance Studio fundraising parents, for their enormous contribution. The event would not have been made possible without the venue, so thank you Weipa Bowls Club. The hardest challenge about writing this thank you is the thought of omitting somebody - a business, an organisation, a donation or a gesture that was part of the event. How do you thank so many people, so many businesses, so many friends and so many strangers for their support? Words cannot be put together to describe how proud Weipa should be of their immediate response to situations like this - Weipa as a community never fails to step-up to help. Please accept this public letter as a deep and genuine thank you for the community’s generosity, support and willingness to make time to be part of the fundraising event at such a busy time of year. I’ve always thought Weipa was a magic place and last (Saturday) night only just reinforced what I already knew. I would have loved to have been there, but to be honest I’m still very emotional and trying to get my head around things. Everyone is right. I have the most beautiful group of friends. Not sure how I got so lucky. Thank you again for everybody’s support. We hope to take the kids to Sea World and the theme parks in the next few weeks. They are very excited. On fluoride and wrinkles
I WOulD like to add my comments to the suggestion of adding fluoride to the Weipa water. First of all, the cost is just too much for a small town and of course that would mean our rates would go up even more. I would much sooner see the money go into the town itself. Nice walks could be done along the River Drive foreshore, more picnic and barbecue areas, better water supply to the town to name a few but on reading an article on wrinkles recently, that was enough for me to say no to fluoridation. If parents want their children to have better teeth, take away the soft and fruit drinks and give them flouride tablets if they want to – it’s better than giving the whole town no choice. Here is an extract from Maureen Kennedy Salaman books called “All Your Health Questions Answered”: The Fluoride Disgrace Even if you don’t smoke, there’s another skin ager I bet you didn’t know about. If
your city adds fluoride to the municipal water supply they may also be adding years to your face! Studies disclose that fluoride levels as low as one part per million - the amount added to many city water supplies - causes a breakdown of collagen. The amount of fluoride, coupled with a poor diet, not only contributes to wrinkling, but to the speeding up of the entire aging process, weakening bones, ligaments, muscles and tendons. I received the greatest shock of my life when I visited Kizilcaoern, a village in Turkey where the water supply has an even higher fluoride content - more than five parts per million. I have never in my life seen so many prune faces. Women and men in their 30’s or 80’s with deep wrinkles and flabby, hanging skin. Many of the natives in their 30’s were so weak and decrepit they had to use walking canes to get around. One bent, hobbling woman with deep, criss-crossing facial wrinkles appeared to be in her late 80’s and turned out to be 32. You are probably aware that the municipal water in many
cities and town in the US is flouridated to protect children from developing tooth cavities. You are probably not aware that the Environmental Protection Agency several years ago increased the maximum allowable level to flourides in public water supplies to four parts per million from the original range of 1.4 to 2.4, thus subtly, but definitely, contributing to the crow’s feet, laugh lines and other wrinkles on the faces of American people. In another article she writes: Your tap water could be another isolated aluminium culprit. Municipal water often contains fluoride, which increases the amount of isolated aluminium leached from cookware and absorbed in food cooked in it. Another problem is the possibility your drinking water contains dissolved isolated aluminium, or alum. Some studies have shown that flouride in the water actually increases the body’s absorption of aluminium in your drinking water. So I say NO to flouride – if people want it they can add it themselves Yvonne Rowland

Tanya: I was bought up on stations and then we moved into town. Never had flouride. Besides that, the smell and taste makes me gag. I love Weipa water the way it is but what will be, will be.

NEWS CEO farewelled at WTA meeting FORMER Weipa Town Authority Chief Executive Officer, Ian Pressley was farewelled from office at last Friday’s WTA monthly meeting. A morning tea was held in Ian’s honour which was attended by WTA and RTAW staff and other well wishers. Ian was presented with several gifts to enjoy in his retirement and former WTA chair Carrie Gay phoned in by teleconference to wish Ian well. After posing for a group photo Interim Chair, Stretch Noonan announced that “Elvis had left the building”.

Regional Development australia FnQ &TS has welcomed the Federal government announcement of its $210 million infrastructure package for Cape York. CEO Sonja Johnson said the RDA FNQ&TS has been working hard to re-affirm this commitment to the Far North and now needs to ensure the scope of the project is in line with the needs of these communities which are firmly focussed on upgrading the Peninsula Development Road (PDR). The announcement by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Warren Truss and Assistant Minister Jamie Briggs states that “Cape York Regional Package will upgrade road infrastructure in northern Queensland, including the road between Mapoon and Weipa, the connection between Aurukun and the Peninsula Development Road and the Jardine River Bridge. Upgrades to the Seisia Wharf and improvements to the raw water pipeline from Bamaga to Seisia are also included in the package”. “At its recent meeting the Cape York and Torres Shires Regional Organisation of Councils’ Mayors fully endorsed enhancements to the PDR recognising the significant economic development opportunities that this would bring. “We are confident that the State government will support the community’s desires along with the Federal government’s commitment and provide the resources needed to ensure the timely completion of this project,” Ms Johnson said.
Voting revolution in Queensland VoTing will be revolutionised at the next state election under electoral reforms introduced in Parliament this month. The reforms mean Queensland’s electoral system would be modernised and simplified but also better protected. Voting will enter the digital age at the next state election with electronic voting to be made available for voters with disabilities. Blind and vision impaired voters will be able to phone in their vote via an electronic assisted voting (EAV) system and physically disadvantaged electors will also be able to cast their vote electronically at selected polling booths. If successful, expanding EAV will be considered. Proof of identity will be required on polling days to prevent voter impersonation, and a broad range of ID will be acceptable: current driver licence; current Australian passport; voter identification letter issued by the ECQ; recent account or notice issued by a public utility, identification card issued by the Commonwealth or a State as evidence of the person’s entitlement to a financial benefit

Christmas family fun at Napranum Primary Health Care Clinic An enjoyable Family Fun Day was held last week at napranum Primary Health Care Clinic to provide fun and informative health education for the local community. The emphasis of the day was on “Fun Times, Healthy Futures”, promoting exercise, healthy nutrition and increasing awareness of what is important for families in having an overall healthy lifestyle. Physiotherapist Amy O’Hara provided an enjoyable exercise session to start the day, there were displays of women’s and men’s health information and giveaways, face painting for the kids and even manicures for mums. A beautiful Christmas Fairy “Dr Fiona”, visited to give gifts to all the children who attended. Fresh fruit platters were provided through-
out the day and a healthy hamburger lunch was cooked by the nutrition team. All participants who attended had their names placed in a draw for a Christmas Hamper and Karlas Baira was the lucky winner. In 2014 the clinic plans to start regular exercise classes at the clinic and start up a Napranum walking group. Thanks to Graham from the Napranum Store who kindly donated a beautiful tropical fruit platter and the Napranum clinic staff who donated items for the Christmas Hamper. The clinic closes for the Christmas break at 4pm on the December 20 and re-opens at 8.30am on January 6. Napranum Primary Health Care Clinic wishes all patients and families a merry Christmas and a happy and safe new year.

Santa steps out in Aurukun THis year’s Christmas Tree was a great celebration for the Aurukun community and a great start to the festive season. A jovial and enthusiastic Santa arrived in a Police wagon and was greeted by a crowd of at least 400 . . . and his dancing style was to be commended. Linda Sivyer and her assistants once again excelled themselves with their arrangements, and special thanks to the Island and Cape Supermarket for their hot dogs and soft drinks. name comes under David’s family tree. His parents responsibility is for him to be loved, cared for and safe. Gifts were shared, greetings were offered and blessings granted. Christmas, a time when we are happy and blessed to see our little ones glow with happiness when they receive the gifts they are given, but hopefully they are taught that there is the joy of giving to others who are not has blessed as we are. There will be drop off points at many food outlets, the Mayor’s Appeal, and other such ideas where we have the chance to identify with the poor and down and out, and it’s another chance to teach our children to do the same. When Jesus was born on Christmas Day God showed clearly that he wanted his Son to identify with the poor and down trodden by sending his angels with the good news of the Saviour of the world to shepherds, people of the lower classes. His Son, born in a smelly animal stable, not in a palace. There are many reasons to be joyful for those who fully understand the reason for the season, far more serious stuff. But let us also continue to remember the less fortunate among us. Have a safe, joyful Christmas and New Year and God’s richest blessings to all. – Rev Michael Connolly
Greetings all, as we come to a close in the year we look back and reflect on our achievements and note our success as a community together with the Council we mark significant changes in our Shire. This year we celebrated the opening our long awaited Day Care Centre, with this addition the Napranum Preschool and Kindergarten has now become the Napranum Early Childhood Centre. This year also saw the opening of our new café and takeaway, the development of the Napranum Home Construction Factory and the completion of 20 new homes in our subdivision. We look forward into the New Year with the development of a new ring road to support the housing factory and the opening of our new War Memorial in April 2014. The construction of the new Jessica Point Civic Centre is well underway – it is currently at the frame stage and on target for completion mid-2014. Community planning and engagement continues to be a priority as we move forward and I would like to thank the Women of
Worth, Men of Worth, our young leaders and the community for their valued input and interest. Council continued its support of social events in the community and region this year through financial and in-kind support. The importance of such events is valued by Council and recognises the social benefits it brings to the people. I would like to express my appreciation and acknowledge the support and commitment of my fellow Councillors as well as the dedication, hard work and support from the Council staff and former council. On behalf of the Napranum Aboriginal Shire Council I wish to extend to all families and friends my warmest seasons greeting for the festive season and New Year. noise. I went in and stood in a corner. They were all drinking. There were some who were drunk and telling jokes and laughing at everything. They were having a great time. To top it all off, this big fat man dressed in red, wearing a long white beard, entered the room yelling Ho- HoHo! He seemed drunk. He sat on the sofa and all the children ran to him, saying “Santa Claus, Santa Claus...” as if the party were in his honour! At midnight all the people began to hug each other; I extended my arms waiting for someone to hug me, and...do you know...no one hugged me. Suddenly they all began to share gifts. They opened them one by one with great expectations. When all had been opened, I looked

meaning of the celebration. I remember last year there was a great feast in my honour. The dinner table was full of delicious foods, pastries, fruits, assorted nuts and chocolates. The decorations were exquisite and there were many, many beautifully wrapped gifts. But, do you want to know something? I wasn’t invited! I was the guest of honour and they didn’t remember to send me an invitation. The party was for me, but when that great day came, I was left outside, they closed the door in my face...and I wanted to be with them and share the party. In truth, that didn’t surprise me because in the last few years most have closed their doors to me. Since I was not invited, I decided to enter the party without making any

As you well know, we are getting closer to my birthday. Every year there is a celebration in my honour and I think that this year the celebration will be repeated. During this time there are many people shopping for gifts. There are many radio announcements, TV commercials, and in every part of the world everyone is saying that my birthday is getting closer and closer. It is really very nice to know that at least once a year, some people think of me. As you know, the celebration of my birthday began many years ago. At first people seemed to understand and be thankful for all that I did for them, but in these times, no one seems to know the reason for the celebration. Family and friends get together and have a lot of fun, but they don’t know the

The end of the year is a time to reflect on those things that are important and remind us why we all want to come home safely. On behalf of Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa, I’d like to wish the entire community a safe and happy holiday season. My family and I have enjoyed exploring the region and spending time with many of you during the various community functions during the year. Recently our operation marked a significant milestone, reaching 50 years of operations and 500 million tonnes of bauxite shipped. I’d like to acknowledge that without strong support from our worldclass employees, particulary our long term employees, Traditional Owners, local businesses and the local community, we would have never reached such a significant milestone. Next year will be another challenging year; however, I am confident our business will continue to go from strength to strength as we continue to collaborate and strengthen our relationships, and build a strong future for Weipa and the Western Cape. The Newshound Sniffing out the stories about our four-legged friends... MY human mum and dad are very excited at the moment because apparently I now have something called “web cred”. Seems my mum entered some photos of myself and my K9 mum Crispy in an online competition on a website called waggle.com.au and I am their “Waggle Model Dog of the Month” for December. You should have heard the commotion when my mum received the email – she was jumping up and down and squealing, and my dad kept patting me and telling me what a “star” I was. Personally, I don’t understand what all the fuss is about however I am looking forward to the gift I receive for being Miss December. My mum said that for the month of December I am featured on the Waggle website and that everyone who purchases something from the company gets an e-invoice with my picture on it! What I want to know is where are the extra treats, the new toys and the executive spa treatments a “star” K9 like myself obviously deserves? Speaking of new toys there are plenty of different things in our house at the moment as our humans prepare for something they call Christmas.

Firstly, the tree the humans put pretty balls all over appeared but this year it was placed on a table and I am unable to reach the balls – how unfair! I have however been working on Smudge the cat, who has promised to knock some of the balls onto the floor for me when the humans aren’t looking! I seem to recall lots of yummy food appearing around the same time as the tree last year and unless I’m mistaken I wasn’t allowed to enjoy that either! The lovely people at the Tableland Veterinary Service explained to me that my K9 system cannot cope with Christmas treats, such as excessive fat off the ham, fried onions from the barbecue, or those funny looking prawn heads and tails that smell so delicious! Chocolates are another no-no, as in large amounts they can be toxic. Raisins are also toxic to pets. I’ve been listening to my humans discuss Christmas lunch, which sounds like a real winner to me, but it seems I’m going to be stuck with doggie biscuits again as cooked ham bones and cooked chicken or turkey bones can splinter and injure the inside of my tummy. Even though ham bones taste really good they’re no good for K9s as the fat and meat attached to them can cause tummy upsets and that yummy salty taste – you, guessed it, no good for dogs. Anyway, I’m sure my humans will find something extra special for myself and Crispy to make our Christmas special . . . as long as they don’t make us wear those silly hats again!

THE North Queensland Toyota Cowboys have honoured their games record holder Matthew Bowen by launching a junior rugby league tournament to be hosted by his former high school. The Matthew Bowen Sevens will be contested for the first time at Abergowrie College, near Ingham, on Saturday, February 15 and will be open to all secondary schools in North Queensland. It will be an annual event, showcasing the best schoolboy talent in the region and possibly unearthing another young footballer to match the Cowboys’ all-time favourite player. A Test and State of Origin representative who belied his size to become one of the game’s biggest stars, Bowen played 270 NRL matches for North Queensland after making his debut at the start of the 2001 season and is one of only four Cowboys life members. He also holds the record for most NRL tries for the club with 130, a massive 45 more than the next best Cowboy. The long-time No.1 returned to Cowboys HQ last week to launch the Sevens which will have a maximum number of 32 teams who will play a round-robin competition to decide the final four teams. The semi-finals and finals will be played prior to a pre-season clash between the NYC Cowboys and the reigning TDRL premiers, the Herbert River Crushers. “I feel very privileged and honoured to have a carnival named after me and to have it played where I went to school,” Bowen said. “I loved Abergowrie back then and I still do today.” To register for the Matthew Bowen Sevens, email Cowboys game development officer Aaron Payne – apayne@cowboys.com.au.

Quiz questions the reefs off there and we had an absolute blinder running out of bait and hooks. We landed Coral Trout, Red Throat Emperor, Tuskers, Trevally, Fusiliers, Rosy Job Fish, Spanish Mackerel and a couple of the biggest Cod I’ve ever seen. Ben Notso had a little flick of the fly rod and came up trumps with a little Cobia that was swimming with a Manta Ray, and all within sight of the boat ramp. Off the pontoon at the boat ramp there have been some tasty Squid taking jigs at night. The Queenfish and Trevally have been hammering the hordes of bait fish in the channel out from the loader and only the birds are taking advantage of this feast.
Things have been a little bit quiet in the rivers but I don’t think there are too many anglers out there. Christmas is just around the corner and there are some great deals to be had at Weipa Tackle World so drop in and see Terri or Shane and do a deal with them. As this is the last edition of the year I would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone that helped me put the reports together this year and I hope that you help me again next year. The boats are heading down south to the reefs of Pera and Thud Point and a couple of lucky anglers were Scott and Andrew Barton who put together a good bag consisting of some huge Black Jew and quality fingermark. There was another big Black Jew caught by Marnie Matthews fishing with her partner Chris Davidson. It is the biggest fish she has caught and her first in Weipa since moving up from Brisbane. One of the boys from the RAAF
Base had a night fish out on the leads and also got into the Black Jew, along with a good-sized Cobia and big Grunter. Duane Jay went out for a billy fish on Thursday and finding good conditions and bait didn’t raise a fish so he had a bottom bash and got some good Fingermark to round the day off. Tony Wittkopp and Terri Garlick went out on Sunday to land Fingermark and Tuskers to help fill the larder. Up off Pennefather Meshek Gray found some big Stripies eager to take his baits but had no luck on the troll. Dylan Wilhelmi and your scribe ventured up to Mapoon to hit

Weipa Swim Club enjoys Christmas break-up ON Friday night, December 6 Weipa Swim Club held their Christmas break-up. We started the night with a free swim and enjoyed a sausage sizzle. Thank you to all the parents who helped make it a fun night for our swimmers. Unfortunately we also lose active club member, Tracy Taare. Tracy has assisted the club every Friday night, been involved in fundraising and general committee duties and was our registrar for the 2013-14 season.
