Croc spotted at local boat ramp

IN last week’s edition of the Western Cape Bulletin fishing columnist Terri made reference to a shovelnosed ray carcass which had been left on the Rocky Point boat ramp, and the likelihood of this sort of practice attacting crocodiles to the area. Only a few days later, this three metre crocodile was spotted having an afternoon sunbake adjacent to the Rocky Point boat ramp. There are many people, par-

ticularly children, who fish from the rocks surrounding the Rocky Point boat ramp and most are aware of the presence of crocodiles in all our waterways, however discarding unwanted catches on, or in close proximity to boat ramps could encourage our estuarine neighbours to get a little bit too close for comfort. Use some common sense, dispose of unwanted catches and bait sensibly and always be “croc aware�. Photos by: Lauren Dibbin

Minister inspects Weipa cyclone shelter site BUILDING Industry Minister Simon Finn was in Weipa on Tuesday to inspect the site of the public cyclone shelter which will be constructed at Hibberd Drive. The shelter is one of 10 new shelters to be constructed in North Queensland via a joint $60 million fund established by the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and the Queensland Government, with equal contributions of $30 million each. “The shelter site at Hibberd Drive is currently part of a mining lease held by Rio Tinto Australia (RTA) who has agreed to surrender part of its lease and convert the site as freehold title to the State,� Mr Finn said. “I have met with representatives from RTA in Weipa to ensure the transfer of land to the State is progressed as quickly as possible.

“In addition, the Weipa Town Authority has provided information on the Weipa town power, water and sewerage services to be supplied to the centre. “This is a great opportunity to work in cooperation with the Weipa Town Authority and Rio Tinto to deliver a multi-purpose sports facility for the people of Weipa. “The government plans to tender the construction contract this month, with construction of the cyclone shelter scheduled to be completed for the 2012-13 cyclone season.� Member for Cook Jason O’Brien said the new cyclone shelter would make the Weipa area safer and more resilient than ever before. “The site is the highest location in Weipa and is adjacent to the Weipa Town Authority building and the local com-

Community plan defines Napranum NAPRANUM Aboriginal Shire Council has engaged a consultant to assist with the formation of a 10-year plan the community can be proud of. Annalise Jennings, from Dynamic Exchange, has so far made two extended visits to the community and after consulting with elders, service providers, women’s and men’s group representatives, preschool staff, Council members and outside stakeholders believes the community plan will be something everyone can be proud of. “My role has been to support the community in the formation of their plan,� Ms Jennings said this week.

“I literally started with a blank canvas and through consultation have been able to establish what defines the Napranum community and where it is they want to go.� Napranum Aboriginal Shire Council Chief Executive Officer, Margaret Barnes said the process has been successful as the plan developed is appropriate to the community and should therefore achieve better outcomes. “Mayor Roy Chevathen, Annalise Jennings and myself have facilitated the development of the plan, rather than dictated it, and the community has contributed to what has become ‘their’ plan,� Ms Barnes said. “The community

Cape York airfares to be slashed AIRFARES for local residents of Cape York and the Torres Strait are set to come crashing down next year, thanks to a subsidy from the Queensland Government. The State government will slash selected scheduled airfares for Cape York and Torres Strait residents to only $99 one-way from January 1 next year. The cheap seats will initially apply for a period of two years to flights operated by Skytrans and West Wing Aviation. Transport Minister Anastacia Palaszczuk said the government would provide the annual subsidy to the tune of about $2.8M to keep airfares low for locals on main scheduled routes. “The government recognises Cape York and Torres Strait residents rely heavily on air travel to access health, education and employment opportunities,� Ms Palaszczuk said.

“Affordable air travel is not a luxury in Far North Queensland, it is essential.� The scheme recognises the high cost of travel to remote areas, and low average incomes of these communities. It will improve access to health, education and employment opportunities for Cape York and Torres Strait residents. Ms Palaszczuk said the new fares had come about as a result of strong representations to her by local Member Jason O’Brien and at the recent community cabinet in Torres Strait. “This is a big win for Cape York and Torres Strait communities and I’m pleased to be able to deliver this new initiative,� Mr O’Brien said. The scheme will only be open to community members with proof of residence. Non-residents, government agencies or businesses will not be eligible. Although the scheme would

QUEENSLAND Boating and Fisheries Patrol would like to remind Indigenous ďŹ shermen of the guidelines for fishing with nets. Indigenous people can possess commercial fishing nets which are up to 80m long and 50mm – 215mm (2 inch – 8Âź inch) mesh size. However, the use of commercial ďŹ shing nets without an authority is prohibited under the Fisheries Act 1994. Recreational ďŹ shing nets that can be used without an authority are: • Cast nets no longer than 3.7m and has a mesh size of no more than 28mm • Seine nets no longer than 16m, drop no more than 3m, mesh size no more than 28mm, does not contain a pocket and is not ďŹ xed. Further information on the type of apparatus permitted, is available in the Recreational fishing rules and regulations for Queensland – A brief guide. A copy of this guide can be found at most bait and tackle stores. In addition to recreational ďŹ shing apparatus, ďŹ sh traps are able to be used by Indigenous people to catch ďŹ sh. Fish traps are deďŹ ned as a structure made predominantly from stone or organic material that creates a holding area designed to capture a small

quantity of fish. Queensland Primary Industries & Fisheries will work with Indigenous communities to deďŹ ne other types of apparatus as necessary. Gender limits, size limits, possession limits and seasonal closures do not apply to Indigenous people who are ďŹ shing in their traditionally owned waters or in waters where they have obtained permission from the traditional owners. Applying for an authority to use a commercial ďŹ shing net: Indigenous people wanting to use commercial nets to take ďŹ sh must apply a General Fisheries Permit (an authority). Application forms are available from the Fisheries Licensing Unit phone 3225 1880. The following information must be supplied to make an application: • traditional owner group to which the applicant belongs • number of nets to be used • location where nets will be used • dates when the nets will be used • the nature of the cultural or ceremonial event that requires the use of a commercial net and the number of people attending the event • copy of CertiďŹ cate of Aboriginality • written support from the tradi-

tional owners of supporting the use of the nets. Use of nets under a General Fisheries Permit (Indigenous netting): Conditions are designed to ensure the nets do not pose a hazard to boating and to ensure the nets are not used in a way that threatens the sustainability of fish stocks. The following conditions will be attached to General Fisheries Permits for Indigenous netting: 1. The nets must not be used to take species protected under other legislation (e.g. turtle and dugong). 2. The permit holder must be in attendance (in attendance means within 100m and on or in the water) of each net that is being used at all times. 3. The nets: • may be set (anchoring or ďŹ xing the net to a place at both ends); and • must be clearly marked with the permit holders name, address and permit number on a white oat at least 15 cm in all its dimensions; and • must not be placed across the width of creeks or rivers, navigation channels or any other areas where the placement of the net would make more than one half of

the waterway impassable to a boat or ďŹ sh; and • must not be joined together; and • if used by day, must be marked by light coloured floats no more than 15m apart along its length; and if used by night, must also be marked by a white light at both ends of the net which is visible for at least 400m in all directions. 4. The holder, or an Indigenous person of the traditional owner group acting under the direction of the permit holder, must not allow any part of the net containing a fish to be out of the water other than to immediately remove the ďŹ sh from the net. 5. Fish collected during the activity must not be sold. 6. The permit must be available for immediate inspection to an officer authorised under the Fisheries Act 1994 (e.g. a Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol ofďŹ cer) during netting activities. Busy time for bridge maintenance work

WORK on Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa’s 2011 bridge maintenance programme is entering its ďŹ nal, and most busy, phase for the year. Graham Mannix, Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa’s Mission River and Andoom Creek Bridge repairs engineer, said that work on the Mission River Bridge is progressing well. “The bridge needed 47 pile splints installed this year, and from September 3 to November 3, 28 pile splints were completed. This means 60 per cent of the work has been done in eight weeks,â€? Graham said. Page 4 Western Cape Bulletin November 9, 2011

Three Work Start team members secure early employment

THE Indigenous Pathway Solutions Work Start Program team completed a successful fortnight of work shadowing with a visit to Northern Haulage and Diesel Services (NHDS), a successful local indigenous business. The visit allowed the IPS team to investigate other employment options in Weipa. The IPS team had a huge success this week, with three of our program participants moving into early employment. Conwell Kris has been employed as a community liasion mentor, while Jonathon Bana and Kailu Johnson have been successful in attaining operator positions with Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa. The remaining IPS Work Start participants are gearing up for the traineeship assessment centre which will be held on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday next week. The assessment centre will allow the IPS team an opportunity to display the professionalism they have developed over the previous seven weeks and hopefully gain traineeships with RTA.

Jonathon Bana has attained an operator position with RTA Weipa.

Kailu Johnson has also secured an operator position with RTA Weipa.

Western Cape College celebrates academic achievements LAST Thursday evening Western Cape College celebrated the academic achievements of the Year 8 to 12 students at its annual Academic Presentation Evening. Thankyou Weipa WHAT wonderful people live in Weipa! It was brought home to me again when two weeks ago, while on business in Cairns, I suffered a suspected heart attack and ended up in Cairns Base Hospital. My husband tried to get out of Weipa but the plane was full. The girls at the airport worked hard to get him

on the only plane departing that day and Trent Gordon forfeited his seat so Keith could get on the plane. This was such a wonderful gesture as I was scared stiff. All’s well that ends well. I am back on deck hale and hearty and cannot speak highly enough of the staff at Cairns Base and all the people who helped Keith get on that plane. Cheers Carrie Gay

From The Chair I LOVE my “job” as Chair of the Weipa Town Authority. It is an excellent feeling to try to make things better for Weipa’s residents in matters that we can control and budget for. I will not be running for Chair in the elections on March 30, 2012 and I urge any of you who have the time and commitment to consider putting yourself forward as a candidate. The position would suit someone who has a part-time job or owns a business. Hours are not regular, the pay is bottom of the Local Government scale, but I can assure you it is very rewarding. Also consider running as a member. The hours required are not nearly as onerous and you do have a voice. To anyone interested I would encourage you to come to a meeting conducted by people who have great knowledge of Councils and how Local Government operates on Wednesday, November 16, from 7pm at the Council Chambers. Many people are wondering what development is planned for the southern end of the Sports Oval. Ideally, it could be used as “showgrounds” with infrastructure and facilities suitable for such a venue.

Presently the town relies on the school grounds, which are shrinking bit by bit, for public events. How fantastic would it be to have a facility purpose built? A meeting will be held on Thursday, November 10, at 7pm at the WTA Council Chambers for all interested parties. How is the change of governance for Weipa faring at present? The financial modelling findings for a stand-alone Weipa were completed by the Treasury and are presently with the State Treasurer. They are now engaged with option two,

amalgamating with Cook Shire. There is still a long way to go before a sustainable model can be adopted. All parties, including State Government, Rio Tinto and WTA remain committed that any change must be financially sustainable and mutually beneficial. It is getting to be that time of year again. wasn’t favourable so went back to Karumba, arriving August 16. Had a problem with the outboard motor on the way back – the bolts came out of the gearbox on the bottom of the leg and broke the shaft. This happened as we were crossing the bay outside Weipa so had to go the rest of the way under sail only. This made the trip a bit more interesting. All was good in the end! Regards Dennis Brown

New positions boost Cape health services H E A LT H c h e c k s a n d access to health services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders will be easier with the recent announcement of more than 41 new positions across Australia. The new positions include outreach workers, practice managers and health professionals to be based in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health services across the country, including two new outreach workers at the Apunipima Cape

York Health Council Aboriginal Corporation, Cape York. Minister for Indigenous Health, Warren Snowdon said the new positions would boost national efforts to close the gap in life expectancy between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians within a generation. “The new Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander outreach workers will work with their communities to encourage more people to access health services and have health checks, and

to identify people who would benefit from improved access to health services,” Mr Snowdon said. Outreach workers will have access to nationally-accredited basic level training through vocational education and training. “This will enable them to develop career paths in health, if they choose, by undertaking more advanced training, such as that for Aboriginal health workers or enrolled nurses,” he said.

MINISTER for Building Industry Simon Finn has taken the opportunity to thank hardworking QBuild staff based in Weipa for their work during his trip to the Cape this week. Mr Finn personally thanked the two Weipabased QBuild staff – field staff foreperson Mark Bevan and Indigenous construction trainee Masiur Clermont – for their efforts in maintaining important government infrastructure within the Weipa township. He also thanked two Cairns-based QBuild carpenters, Greg McDermott and Peter Mills. “In a State as large and decentralised as Queensland, it is important to recognise and support our staff delivering services in the regions,” Mr Finn said. “The staff based in Weipa and the staff who travel from Cairns work closely with the QBuild

Cape York Regional Office in Cairns to deliver a range of services to government infrastructure such as schools, police stations and government housing. “This may include condition assessments, planned maintenance, contract management services, construction and minor works, responsive maintenance and QBuild’s ‘Flying Screwdriver’ maintenance program. “In times of natural disaster, they will also help out with disaster and emergency response work.” Member for Cook Jason O‘Brien reminded Cape York residents that applications were now open for 10 new apprenticeship positions for the Cape York region as part of the 2012 intake of 100 new QBuild apprentices and trainees across Queensland. “Until November 14, people can apply by

completing a form on the QBuild website,” Mr O‘Brien said. Mr O‘Brien said in the Cape York region there would be: two carpenter positions in Atherton; three carpenters, one painter, one plumber, and one school-based carpenter in Cairns; one construction worker trainee in Bamaga one carpenter position in Innisfail. “In addition, two graduating school-based carpenters will start fulltime work with QBuild,” he said. “These two carpenters will have completed the equivalent of a one year apprenticeship while still at school, so will have three years to go. “QBuild is one of the largest employers of construction and engineering industry apprentices in the State – for the applicants, it’s a foot in the door to a specialised trade career.”

Western Cape Beat Operation Check It 2011

Police are mounting a major statewide road policing operation addressing unsafe driving and defective vehicles as part of ‘Operation Check It’ this November. The operation, which commences on Saturday and will run until November 20, will target the ‘fatal four’ as well as other inappropriate driving habits and will include high visibility patrols, speed detection and random breath and drug testing. State Traffic Support Branch Acting Chief Superintendent Andy Morrow said ‘Operation Check It’ was launched to coincide with identified peak periods of road use in Queensland. “With Christmas and school holidays just around the corner, a lot of people are starting to take advantage of the warmer weather and naturally this means more people out on the road,” he said. “The QPS has research that indicates there is an increased potential for fatal and serious traffic crashes during November. Over the last five years, 128 people have been killed in traffic crashes during November. “The QPS will be doing everything it can to prevent injuries and fatalities on the road in the lead up to the festive season.” The operation will focus on: • Defective vehicles • Damaged or illegible number plates • Speed detection • Failure to wear seatbelts • Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs • Driver fatigue Acting Chief Superintendent Morrow said the operation will also monitor inexperienced drivers. “Many young men and women who

THE Lord Jesus did not hesitate to bring up the subject of hell among his disciples, a place or state of mind that sounds truly scary, and as the Lord is familiar with it, it’s another reason why we should seek and to save the lost. But remember, the Lord never spoke to the unsaved in condemnation, but to his faithful in warning. In Mark Ch 9 vs 49-50, after warning of hellfire, he uses the idea of “salt,” that favourite food additive of those times (and even today) to explain to his followers spiritual truths about the testing of a believer’s faith. Verses 49-50; “Everyone will be purified by fire as a sacrificed by salt. “Salt is good; but if it loses its saltiness, how can you make it salty again? Have the salt of friendship among yourselves, and

Motorises urged to wear seatbelts Police are appealing to motorists to wear seatbelts following last week’s horror weekend on Queensland roads in which seven lives were lost, and included a fatal accident at Archer River, near Coen. Initial investigations have shown that at least four, possibly five, of those killed were not wearing seatbelts or correctly restrained. Not wearing a seatbelt has long been identified as one of the Fatal Four along with speed, drink driving and fatigue. State Traffic Support Branch Inspector Ray Rohweder has urged motorists to not only observe the Fatal Four factors but also ensure children are correctly restrained. “We don’t know how many of those lives may have been saved if they had been wearing seatbelts, but we can be sure the toll would likely have been lower if they had,” Inspector Rohweder said. “This has been a tragic weekend already with so many lives destroyed. The simple act of wearing a seatbelt can increase your chances of surviving a traffic crash, no matter how long or short the journey.” Investigations into each of the crashes are continuing.

We must remember not to give up our faith, as it would be hard to regain the anointing again“How can you make it salty again?” Let’s leave it there with this reading from 1 Peter Ch 1 vs 3-7 which tells us that there are rich blessings await-

ing believers at the end of time who remain faithful, and then says; “They are for you, who through faith are kept safe by God’s power for the salvation which is ready to be revealed at the end of time. Be glad about this, even though it may now be necessary for you to be sad for a while because of the many kinds of trial you suffer. Their purpose is to prove that your faith is genuine. Even gold, which can be destroyed, is tested by fire; and so your faith, which is much more precious than gold, must also be tested, so that it may endure. PPTS students celebrate POSITIVE Pathways to Success students celebrated their achievements and the program’s second successful year with a barbecue acknowledging the support of families and community last Thursday. Respect for self and others, trust and truth are key values identified by the students on the program. These young people are a credit to themselves and their families. The jovial banter exchanged between the students and their teachers and mentors Chris Brown and Robyn Maskill, is testament to how far they have travelled socially and emotionally this year. Their polite and respectful manner was evident in their interactions

with the many guests. Mr Ronnie John “Grandfather�, was presented with a carved horse, acknowledging his pivotal role in mentoring, Chris and the first group of boys Eddie, Theo, Brian and William at Springvale Station. The gift was kindly donated by Robyn Lawson and Bill Lonergan of Weipa Post Office. These boys have become role models for other boys in Napranum. The young boys currently attending the program are keen to move onto Springvale and begin their training to become stockmen. The students also surprised Matilda John with a birthday cake. Matilda, whose son Damien John is currently on placement at

Springvale, is a valued supporter of the program offering mentoring and guidance to the staff and students. Certificates of appreciation were presented to many individuals, without whom, Chris said the PPTS program would not have achieved the success to date. REMEMBRANCE DAY Friday, November 11, 2011 What is the significance of Remembrance Day? Remembrance Day, celebrated on November 11 every year, is one of Australia’s most important national commemorations. The day marks the anniversary of the armistice, on November 11, 1918, which led to the end of World War I, the Great War. The day was originally referred to as Armistice Day. What happens on Remembrance Day? On Remembrance Day, one minute’s silence is observed by allied nations at the 11th hour, on the 11th day of the 11th month in honour of those who have died or been wounded on duty since World War I. The original idea of five minutes’ silence was mooted by Melbourne journalist and World War I veteran Edward George Honey. He suggested this act of public com-

memoration in a letter published in London’s Evening Standard in 1919. South African Percy Patrick suggested two minutes silence. At the end of World War II, the Australian and British governments extended the commemoration to those who have served and suffered in all military conflicts, renaming Armistice Day, Remembrance Day. Since 1997, one minute’s silence has been observed for all injured and fallen soldiers. What is the difference between Remembrance Day and ANZAC Day? While both ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day have similar aims today, their origins were very different: Remembrance Day, marks the anniversary of armistice between the Germans and the allied forces, on November 11, 1918, which led to the end of World War I. ANZAC Day commemorates the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces in Gallipoli, in 1915, during World War I. The date, April 25, was officially named ANZAC Day in 1916. Every year commemorative services are held, during which Australians and New Zealanders pay their respects to and acknowledge those who have served and died for our respective countries in war, conflicts and peace operations. What is the significance of the red poppy? The Flanders poppy, the emblem of Remembrance Day, was among

the first plants to bloom on the ravaged battlefields of northern France and Belgium during World War I. It gained its symbolic resonance through Colonel John McCrae’s poignant poem In Flanders Fields (1915). In response to McCrae’s rae’s poem, Moina Michael from the he American YMCA wrote We Shall ll Keep the Faith (1918), imploring ng people to wear a poppy in memory mory of those who served on the battlefields. The French YMCA A suggested selling Armistice Day poppies to raise funds for the benefit of war widows, orphans and veterans in n need in 1918 – a tradition on that continues to this day. Originally, these silk ilk poppies were made by World War ar I orphans in the devastated regions ns of France. The poppies were first brought rought from

France and sold in Australia in 1921. The poppies are now made locally by RSL members, and proceeds continue to support veteran’s welfare.

First Remembrance Day commemorative stamps released AUSTRALIA Post will release its first ever issue of Remembrance Day stamps to mark this year’s significant date 11.11.11. Remembrance Day marks the anniversary of the armistice which ended World War I (1914 – 1918), when Australians pause to honour our men and women who were injured, or lost their lives in service for our country. An observance of silence was adopted on the first anniversary of armistice on 11 November 1919 by allied nations, and now honours all who have served and suffered in any military conflict or peace-keeping operation. Australia Post Managing Director and CEO, Ahmed Fahour says, “This stamp issue has a very significant time and date sequence this year, where one minutes

silence is observed at 11am on 11.11.11 – a sequence which only occurs every 100 years.” “It is fitting for Australia Post to commemorate Remembrance Day in Australia given the observance of silence was originally proposed by Melbourne journalist and World War I veteran, Edward George Honey in 1919. “Not many people would know that a plaque stands next to Melbourne’s Shrine of Remembrance, acknowledging Edward George Honey’s significant contribution, which is still celebrated today by allied nations,” he said. Melbourne-based designer, Tim Hancock, was commissioned to illustrate the stamp issue and has skilfully drawn attention to the shadow cast by history of those who were affected, injured or lost during their wartime service. As part of the issue, Australia Post will also release a limited edition stamp and coin cover (11,111 units in total), with a $5 pad printed coin specially made by the Royal Australian Mint. The coin also features scalloped edging. The Remembrance Day 11.11.11 product range comprises of a minisheet, first day cover, stamp pack, maxicard set of two, stamp-and-coin

cover (limited edition of 11,111 units total), selfadhesive booklet of 10 x 60c stamps and a self-adhesive roll of 200 x 60c stamps. This stamp issue is available at participating Australia Post retail outlets, via mail order on 1800 331 794 and online at www.auspost.com. au/stamps from November2, 2011 while stocks last.

Golf Club presentations this Saturday night ON Sunday Single Stableford game was played at the Carpentaria Golf Club, which was kindly sponsored by Gary and Mel Young. A medium field of players took to the course and the winner of the day was Taylor Francisco with 39 points. Second place went to Peter Clarke with 38 points. We had some random draw prizes on Sunday and they went to Jo, Mick Fleming, Mick Lund and Gavin. NTPs went to Newmy on 15 and Jeff on 18. Thank you once again to Gary and Mel for sponsoring these events and well done to all the winners. There will be no official competitions on Saturday’s duruing November due to the many functions occurring at

the club. If you wish to have a game and hand in cards, please organise with your fellow members and place the cards in the green fees box under the birdies wheel to be handicapped. On Sunday an 18Hole Single Stroke event will be held. Please be at the clubhouse by 12:10pm. Due to the Members Presentation evening on Saturday, November 12 at 6.45pm, the clubhouse will be closed for the evening. Hard-fought wins in squash finals PRELIMINARY finals were held at the Weipa Squash Club on Tuesday night. A grade Bruce Lee’s A1 Owen Witt alternated wins a g a i n s t To n y J a a ’s R o d Wawrzyniak when they preplayed their game, so we were not able to witness the spectacle when Owen defeated Rod (3-2), but the last two games were touch and go. If it wasn’t so serious, it would have been comical to see A2 Glen Egan going into the game with an eye injury against Aaron Schleich with a leg injury, but this shows the callibre of players in Weipa when despite their inabilities they still retrieved lots of difficult shots and covered the court almost as normal. “Hoppy” was eventually

victorious against “Pirate Pete” (1-3). A3 Bill Nason raced to the lead after the first game against Steve Lugsdin, but Bill was trying to control the game from the centre of the court and Steve soon forced Bill to move around the court, which he did with surprising agility, however it ended up Steve’s match (1-3). A4 Alex Dunn showed good form against his smaller opponent Chrisden Russ initially when he won the first two games. After some fantastic lengthy rallies and lots of backhand shots however, Chrisden switched to overdrive and took out the next three games, even though the fourth was a “long” game which could have ended

the match differently (2-3). B Grade Chuck Norris B1 Adam Woodhouse lost his first game to Vin Diesel’s Justin Hyytinen however after many great rallies, some consisting almost entirely of boast shots, and many corner shots (which are impossible to read where they may end up), Adam ploughed through to win the next three games (3-1). B2 Ben Braun would have found the first game against Clair Johnston a bit harrowing but then Clair let the pressure get to her however after many excellent rallies and boast shots she crept back up in the third game, but it was Ben’s night (3-0). B3 Sally Parr went down in the first game against Mark Walters which I think gave

Mark false hope, but then Sally “pulled up her socks” (tried pulling up ankle socks?) and gave it her all, taking the next three games despite some excellent rallies between these two quality players (3-1). B4 Baylee Woodhouse always plays with agility as she runs all through the game (including retrieving the ball after handouts) and although her skills are improving, she went down in three games to the more experienced Esther Rutherford (0-3). Mozzies harass Harriers Run 1618 Set by Ducky Daddles from the Rocky Point boat ramp 19 hashers, 4 dogs, 210,048,100 mozzies We knew it wouldn’t be a run for the faint-hearted as Ducky Daddles is in training mode. A picture run it was. Pictures of buildings etc where the regroups were to be. Along the front of SPQ to the overflow tank at Station A. Then through the bush where Brownie found something dead and rotten to roll in. We ended up at the junction of the Andoom Road. Then up the road, through the bush to The Anchorage. Back up the road to the old Hospital and back to the Hooch. There, while dancing to the tune of mozzie rock, 000, I See You, Cardiac, Tool Box and In Shape were welcomed to the fold. Scoop brought her Mom and Dad along and we welcomed a visit from an old ex-Weipa Hasher Mike Collins, AKA Cumulus, who is visiting all the way from Norfolk Island. Pity the mozzies broke up the party too quickly. Next week the Movember 14, Quasimodo will set the run from Six Tunnels carpark at 1745. See you there, On On Outhouse.

you can’t beat fresh Gar. Another problem is # 4 Ball sinkers for Gar rigging - haven’t got any sorry, you might have to check out your mates tacklebox. On a more positive note I do have plenty of hooks and skirts, in all sizes. It should be a great weekend as plenty of good Billfish have been caught and sighted. Spanish Mackerel can get a bit annoying when trolling for Billfish, swiping all your baits, so have plenty rigged. For those of you that aren’t fishing the comp big Threadfin Salmon are being caught at both the Mission and Andoon bridges, live Mullet your best

bait, sundown and sun-up your best time. There are a few Prawn being caught, especially under the Mission River bridge. They are not big, but a good bait size. Grunter fishing is picking up with fish up to 60cm reportably being caught at Red Beach and over in the mouth of Gordon Creek. Anglers are finding that fresh slabs of Mullet are more enticing to the bigger fish, rather than Prawn. Duyfken Point is still producing good Tuskfish over 50cm on a regular basis with Prawn being the preferred bait. Probably worth a trip up to the Skardon River as with all

this humidity about it should be bringing on the Jacks. Try and use a lure with some heavy stripe on them as Jacks take it as a challenge and can’t resist having a go at it. Haven’t got much more to report except that I will be looking for heaps of photos from this weekend.
