Gove seeks asylum

Chair of the East Arnhem Chamber of Commerce Dave Suter has questioned why Gove was left out of a recent boost to Top End asylum seeker centres. Here, he stands in front of the government-run detention facility on Melville Bay Road, built in 2006 to hold illegal fishermen caught off Gove waters for the short-term.

By MATT GARRICK

NOT a cent from a new $48 million government package to support asylum seeker centres in the Northern Territory will go to Gove, a decision that has frustrated local leaders.

Gove farewells a good friend

Prime Minister Tony Abbott and Minister for Immigration Scott Morrison travelled to Darwin last week, where they announced that the NT Police Force would receive $48m to bolster resources for maintaining police presence at Top End asylum-seeker detention facilities. This move to cement Darwin as an asylum seeker hub of Northern Australia has provoked questions about why Gove has been ignored from the conversation. Chair of the East Arnhem Chamber of Commerce Dave Suter said Gove would have the facilities to house low-

risk asylum seekers, who could bring a boost to the town’s flagging economy. “If they’re crowning Darwin as the capital city for detention centres in the north, then why can’t some of that happen over here while we’re in a status of decline?

“It’s certainly one of the options that could help rebuild this community.” Although a governmentrun facility already exists on Melville Bay Road, built in 2006 as short-term detention for illegal fishermen caught off the coast, Mr Suter said it would be too small to house

asylum seekers. He instead suggested that houses left empty by Rio refinery workers exiting the town could be used to facilitate a low-security asylum seeker centre. He said 600 houses set to be vacated could be used for this purpose.

“You wouldn’t need to build fences - where are they going to go? “Once you’ve processed them, fingerprinted and photographed them, they’re in the system - if they ever get caught out, they’d be in trouble.” Continued Page 7 >>

As GAT Treasurer Bernice Cox said: “Singing and dancing is encouraged.” The idea is that audience members doll themselves up in drag, or however they feel like dressing, and get down to the Town Hall to not so much watch the movie, but holler and sing along, while taking part in plenty of fun activities related to scenes as they unfold. “People in Gove just love dressing up. “When we did Rocky

Ms Cox said the event would be a chance for inhibitions to be thrown to the wind. “We don’t really mind what you do. “We’re doing it as a feel-good community event; it’s just the start of some big

things happening with GAT this year - watch this space!” Keep your ears to the ground for upcoming GAT events including the Gove Great Comedy Debate, coming up at the end of April, and for “something that’s never been done here before - a once in a Gove lifetime event” set for July 18 and 19. IN MEMORY OF DARRYL ‘MANDO’ MANDERSON

Gove farewells a good friend in Mando THE Gove Country Golf Club, one of Darryl ‘Mando’ Manderson’s “spiritual homes” in town, was fittingly the venue for a stirring memorial to remember the man last Sunday. Tributes for the former Rio refinery fitter flowed from friends and family, who looked back over his life and all that made Mando, 54, such an important piece of the Gove community. His brother, Kevin Manderson, encouraged all those attending to remember the good times, and not dwell on the bad. “Don’t cry that it’s over, just be happy that it occurred.”

gentle and strong” father and partner he was. As Coral put it in a statement: “You’re a thinker, a planner, nothing was too much trouble for you - you always put others first. “Such a big heart in that big hairy chest of yours.” Friend Denise Fincham said the way the Gove community had rallied together over Mando spoke volumes about what kind of character he was. “One thing this brought home to us,

He said Mando would have been humbled by the huge crowd turnout. “That’s testament to the guy that he was - I’m sure that Darryl would rather have been one at the party than the point of the party.” Loving statements from his children Troy and Sara and partner Coral were also read out at the memorial, expressing what a “loving,

Local loses life in refinery incident THE Gove community has been in mourning for long-term and much-loved local Darryl ‘Mando’ Manderson, who tragically lost his life in an incident at the refinery on Tuesday, February 25. The fatal incident occurred in the afternoon, while Mr Manderson was conducting routine maintenance work on part of the refinery. Police, ambulance and the site emergency response team attended to the incident, but Mr

Manderson could not be revived. Mr Manderson first worked at Gove between 1983 and 1995 and then returned to site in 2001. In a statement from Gove Operations General Manager Ryan Cavanagh, released soon after the incident occurred, it was written that: “Darryl will be fondly remembered by everyone who worked with him. “He was a top-quality tradesman and was the go-to man if you needed an answer to any question.

“Darryl was approachable and willing to assist in any way he could. “He was a leader amongst his work mates who was always willing to share his experiences.” Mr Manderson was also known as a passionate golfer and a great supporter and volunteer at the Gove Country Golf Club during his time in Nhulunbuy. He was also a volunteer for the Variety Club. Mr Cavanagh said: “On behalf of the Gove team I offer my

sincere condolences to Darryl’s family, friends and work mates and in particular his partner Coral, son Troy, and daughter Sara.” The company has commenced an investigation into the incident and is working closely with the relevant authorities, including Worksafe NT, who have also launched an investigation, which is still under way. Worksafe NT flew into Gove to assess the site of the incident on Wednesday, February 26.

New fishing trophy named in Mando’s honour A NEW perpetual fishing tournament trophy has been named in honour of Darryl ‘Mando’ Manderson. The AirNorth Ladies Fishing Classic was held over the last weekend, and in testament to Mando’s die-hard love of fishing, a new tournament trophy has been named in his honour. The ladies involved in the competition were prepared to reel their lines in early, out of respect for the memorial being held for Mando, last Sunday afternoon. Instead, they decided that a keen angler like Mando would never want to see the tournament cut short, so during the time of the memorial, from 4.30-5pm, whoever caught the biggest fish in this time was to win the inaugural Darryl Manderson trophy. Tournament results and winner of the trophy in next week’s Arafura Times.

is what a strong a community we have, and how much we love and respect people like Mando.” She talked of how here in Gove, when things get tough, the community bands together. “At the moment, times are very hard for all of us. “What I admire so much about Gove is that the harder it gets, the harder the resolve is for the community to support each other. “And its been beautiful to watch the support the community has given around the people who Mando loved.” A funeral will be held for Mando in his home town of Bundaberg during this week.

Slightly more kids at school than last year EARLY data from a new Federal Government remote school attendance program has shown one per cent more children are going to school in Yirrkala than the same time last year. Rates of enrolled students attending school have hopped up to 51.2 per cent from 50.1 per cent last year. The remote Gapuwiyak School has seen an eight per cent rise in attendance figures since the start of the term. Minister for Indigenous Affairs Nigel Scullion, who spearheaded this new program, said the figures showed a promising start, but were not good enough. “An attendance rate of 66.2 per cent (in Gapuwiyak) is still not good enough. “Children going to school only half the

time are not getting an education that will give them a bright future.” Seven locally-based attendance officers have been hired in Yirrkala to get kids up in the morning and on their way to school. NT Shadow Education Minister Natasha Fyles said: “Actions to boost attendance are welcome, but it is crucial for the Federal and Territory Governments to work collaboratively with community leaders and educators to ensure officers have the appropriate training and community support. “The real measure will be how many of those additional students are attending in term four later this year and whether the school is adequately resourced, given CLP cuts to teachers and support staff.”

The $28.4m Remote Schools Attendance Strategy covers communities in Queensland and Western Australia as well as 17 communities across the Territory. Mr Scullion said this was just the beginning. “I’m working with my department to ensure we maintain the momentum of these early gains and build on them. “In most communities in the NT enrolment figures are up on last year. “This is a strong sign that the message that every child should be in school every day is getting through. “ He acknowledged that in some communities there have been issues, such as funerals, affecting school attendance this term.

99-year lease talks continue, despite protests

YIRRKALA Traditional Owners are progressing with talks about having a Commonwealth-run 99-year township lease on their community, despite protests from the Northern Land Council (NLC). An information session to discuss the proposed lease took place last Wednesday, February 26. Traditional Owners from multiple clan groups alongside representatives from the Federal and Territory Governments and the NLC took part in the meeting. Supporters of the idea hope that a 99-year lease agreement could open up economic and home ownership opportunities for people in Yirrkala, by stripping away levels of bureaucracy due to the myriad leases currently operating over the community. The proposal to bring in the single

99-year lease has created controversy since the Federal Minister for Indigenous Affairs Nigel Scullion visited the region to discuss the idea in late October last year. Despite protests from some corners that 99-years would be too lengthy a time period for a government-held lease over Aboriginal land, Chairman of the Rirratjingu Corporation Bakamumu Marika (left) said it would be a benefit to his community. “There’s opportunities there (with the lease) for more services and employment that will benefit the community.” He said that he’d listened to criticisms about the lease, but continued to support the idea. “I’m aware of those, but I’ve made up my mind.”

The NLC has been fighting against the proposed lease, fearing added Commonwealth Government involvement on Aboriginal-owned land. “The land councils want the authority over any leases to remain with the traditional owners,” an NLC spokesman said in a recent press release. Mr Marika said, as a Traditional Owner, he hoped the NLC would change their stance. “We need to resolve internal issues with the NLC in order for us to move forward with the proposals for this lease.” He said he was wanting to see more devolution of power from the NLC so local Traditional Owners could increase tenure on their own land.

Alcan Gove slugged by Carbon Tax

THE company that runs the mining and refining operations in Gove, Rio Tinto Alcan, paid over $500,000 towards the Carbon Tax in the last financial year. Figures released recently showed that Alcan Gove Pty Ltd paid $635,950 for 27,650 carbon emission units surrendered for the tax. The controversial tax was implemented by the previous Labor Federal Government as an environmental policy in 2012.

The Labor Party’s Clean Energy Regulator has also released figures showing that Territory taxpayers have contributed $20,322,915 to fund the government-run Power and Water Corporation’s share of the tax from last year. NT Treasurer Dave Tollner said the NT was out of step with the rest of the nation in terms of its energy sector. “Despite all other States continuing with the national

reform process, the NT reforms were stalled by the Labor Party in the NT and then they supported stupid taxes like the carbon tax. “Major challenges are facing the NT’s economy and being part of the growth in northern Australia.” In a list of NT organisations hit with the carbox tax, after Power and Water, other big spenders on emissions included Newmont Australia Holdings and EDL NGD.

THE Territory Government has started its pitch to get the Tony Abbott Federal Government to invest into improving the Central Arnhem Highway. Chief Minister Adam Giles said paving roads such as this would “be essential to opening up the bush and bringing jobs to remote communities in the North”. “The Territory wants to walk side by side with the Infrastructure Prime Minister Tony Abbott as the Coalition delivers on its commitment to unlock the North and overcome

Indigenous disadvantage.” He said as well as the Central Arnhem Highway, the Territory would seek Federal investment in roads such as the Tanami, Roper, Sandover, and the Port Keats Road. The Territory Government recently lodged its formal submission to the Federal Parliament’s Joint Select Committee on Northern Australia. Later this year, the NT Government will embark on a roadshow visiting towns for community forums where Territorians can have their say in how this Northern push unfolds.

Rescue mission for group trapped by high tides DESPITE the picturesque sunset, dusk near East Woody Beach nearly turned to danger last Wednesday, after a group of Wallaby Beach residents found themselves stranded by high tides. The four family members had walked from their community along the beach and down the back of Crocodile Creek, hunting for mud mussels. They were ready to leave when they realised the tide had risen to a point where they could not get back On The across - they could not swim due to crocodile risk, and Beat because they were with two below-school aged children. with One lady, a fifth member of the group, managed to NT get across to the mainland from their tide-separated Police island, and contacted family members who came down to East Woody to assist. Two beach walkers had also made contact with the trapped group, waving arms at each other across the windy creek-mouth running between them. The beach walkers called the Police who came quickly to help the situation. The Police consulted with Dhimurru Aboriginal Corporation, who launched a small tinnie to rescue the trapped party. All persons were safely brought back to shore. Nhulunbuy Police Sergeant Erica Sims said this incident acted as a reminder that “people should be mindful of contingencies related to tidal movement” when out on local beaches or water spots.

A PASSENGER plane flying to Groote Eylandt had to make an unplanned stop for fuel in Gove last Wednesday morning, February 27. The Alliance Airlines flight travelling from Cairns was forced to make an emergency stop in Gove at about 8.15am after it was unable to land at its destination of Groote due to heavy storms. The plane carrying 81 passengers held in the air for awhile, unable to land, before pilots decided to land in Gove to refuel. Passengers did not disembark as the plane was refuelled - it then took off back on route to its destination. A communication spokesperson for the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) said although the pilots of the plane had made a “fuel emergency call”, this did not mean they were running low on fuel; it meant they had to get fuel, or else risk running low sometime soon. “The outcome of all this is good. “They followed appropriate procedure and landed safely.” The Gove Airport Emergency Committee - which includes Police, airport staff, ambulance officers and NT Fire and Rescue - meets regularly and holds exercises annually to run over their emergency plans, in case an event such as a crash should ever occur at the airport.

Elcho exports dance their way across country HERE’S a challenge: watch ‘Zorba the Greek Yolngu Style’ on YouTube and try not to laugh and forward it to everyone you know. Here, writer ANNA DOWD learns how East Arnhem heroes the Chooky Dancers are gearing up HAILING from a remote community on Elcho Island in North East Arnhem Land, this group of young artists has been on a wild ride since their Zorba creation catapulted them on to the world stage in 2007. The Chooky’s original brand of physical language marrying acrobatics, clowning, theatre and traditional and contemporary dance has taken them across the globe, delighting audiences at comedy and cultural festivals in the USA, Canada, Asia and across Australia. Producer and director Joshua Bond grew up on Elcho Island speaking the local language, Djambarrpuyngu, and has been with the Chookys through much of their journey. He says their audiences always walk away with a lot of questions, and this new show intends to drop the curtain and let people in. “Who are these people? How did they even come across Zorba the Greek? There’s always so many questions,” said Mr Bond. “This is a chance to get a bit close and personal.” With autobiographical elements, Djuki Mala weaves physical storytelling with video and audio from Elcho

Islanders to paint a picture of the key moments - both tragic and joyous - that have shaped the lives of the group’s members. And to further drop the curtain, performers open the forum up to questions from the audience after the show. And the Chooky dance fever is catching. “Go out to the communities and there’s a plethora of new dance groups popping up everywhere,” said Mr Bond. “It’s empowered so many young people; whether through dancing, or telling their own story or just being proud young Aboriginal kids.” Whatever your understanding of this part of the world, Djuki Mala promises to be a rare insight into the lives and experiences of these young Yolngu artists and the life of their community. And all with a large dose of trade-

mark Chooky fun, cheek and humour. Djuki Mala will kick off the tour in Darwin and see over 40 regional and major centre performances Australia wide throughout 2014. Artback NT Performing Arts Touring Manager Angela O’Donnell says the arts have been a significant employer for remote artists for a long time, and the Chooky Dancers are a shining example of that. “They are undoubtedly one of the Territory’s greatest exports.”

Reflection on the start of a Journey Guwak by East Journey Review by ANGELA MADDEN IT can be easy to overlook talent when it is found so close to home. In this instance, in the form of local band done good East Journey, who are located just fifteen minutes away from town in Yirrkala. East Journey are a group likely known to most locals, and indeed non-locals, as their debut release Guwak has brought them success and exposure on a national stage. At a time when East Journey are working on a new single to be released in May, called Bright Lights, Big City, I thought it was worth revisiting and reflecting on its precursor. In particular, as to where the album Guwak has taken the boys so far. Guwak is a comprehensive first album, incorporating the sounds of family, landscapes and home. The inspiration of Yothu Yindi is

acknowledged and evident within this recording. A number of songs from Guwak, namely Ngarrpiya, Emu, Gumik and Song of Arnhem Land, were all nominated for Independent Music Awards in 2013. East Journey were finalists in the Band of the Year category in the Deadly Awards last year, and performed as part of that awards ceremony at the Sydney Opera House. Other notable performances for the group have included Womadelaide, Garma and the National Indigenous Music Awards. Certainly an impressive ride for the boys so far, and I’m sure the journey is set to continue. Each week we will feature an

album by an Australian artist or group. Listen out as we play a track from the feature album, Monday to Friday this week, just prior to the midday news. A full interview between Station Manager Ange and Arian Pearson from East Journey will be broadcast on-air at 2pm, Wednesday, March 5 on 106.9 Gove FM.

Gove seeks asylum << From Page 1 Families deemed to be low-risk and in the process of being resettled in Australia would be the perfect candidates to be moved to Gove, Mr Suter said. “You’d pick the right ones to come here. “And then if you had a hundred families, with one child each, you’d have 300 people. “In one fell swoop, we’d have 300 people, and with that you’d need administration staff and security to administer the detention centre.” He said businesses and services of the region could benefit from the influx of new residents using the town, if an asylum seeker plan was ever to go ahead. Rio Tinto first publicly raised the idea of a regional centre for asylum

seekers being constructed in Gove at a meeting at Nhulunbuy Town Hall in January, 2013. The meeting was held to discuss what contingency plans could be implemented if the refinery was to shut down. No word has been given by the federal government if such an idea would ever be seen as a go-ahead. Territory politicians have also been questioning why Gove was not included in last week’s ministerial travels to the Top End. Federal Labor MP Warren Snowdon said Mr Abbott missed an opportunity to provide some certainty about the future of Gove by not visiting on his way out of Darwin. “Nothing meaningful has been forthcoming from the Prime Minister or any of his Ministers in relation to Gove.

“They are treating the people of Gove and the surrounding communities with complete contempt.” Local MLA Lynne Walker echoed these sentiments. “The Prime Minister promised to visit Nhulunbuy, he’s made it to Darwin on his VIP jet so the least he could do is fly on to Nhulunbuy and meet with the thousands of residents affected by the Rio Tinto refinery curtailment. “A visit by Mr Abbott is long overdue.” Mr Abbott has confirmed he will be spending a week in an Aboriginal community in the region later this year. By the time of going to press, neither Mr Abbott nor Mr Morrison’s offices had replied to questioning about if Gove could be considered as a hub for asylum seekers in the future.

NT POLICE have seized cannabis and cash in two remote communities following investigations into the sale and supply of the drug in East Arnhem Land. Two males and a female have been arrested and charged as a result. In Gapuwiyak, two men aged 30 and 33 were charged with possessing and supplying cannabis in an Aboriginal community after Police allegedly discovered 35 deal bags of cannabis in a vehicle. The 33-year-old was also charged with money

laundering and $930 was seized, suspected to be from the proceeds of crime. A 26-year-old female in Galiwinku was also charged with possessing and supplying a trafficable amount of cannabis in an Aboriginal community, after officers conducted a search of a residence and allegedly found 72g of cannabis in 76 individual deal bags in a freezer. Police have alleged that the woman was selling the deal bags for $200 each. Superintendent Craig Barrett from the Arafura

Division said it was an excellent result for local Police and for the communities. “The profiteering by these individuals is staggering. They do not care who is hurt or who suffers as a result of their behaviour. “Police will continue to target drugs and other illegal substances in communities to keep the residents safe from harm and free of exploitation.” The two men were bailed to appear in the Gapuwiyak Magistrates Court on April 1 and the

New law cracks down on drug suppliers THE NT Government have passed new legislation to enforce tough penalties on offenders caught smuggling dangerous drugs into remote Indigenous communities. As of late February, offenders caught trying to supply Schedule 2 drugs - which includes cannabis into an Indigenous community will face an expanded and tougher charge. Attorney-General John Elferink said that under the amended legislation, a person may be charged with supply if they carry drugs into a community with the intent to sell the substance or if they prepare or transport drugs for the purpose of

supplying them into an indigenous community. “People who commit an offence of this nature will be prosecuted regardless of whether they have actually provided the drugs to another person. “These changes will see drug traffickers caught at airports or on highways entering communities charged to the full extent of the law.” Under the legislation, persons convicted of supplying a Schedule 2 dangerous drug to a community will serve real jail time of at least 28 days, and can face a maximum of nine years imprisonment.

female was given notice to appear in the Galiwinku Magistrates Court on June 2.

 letters to the editor/comment Adios, Amigos! WHEN United Kingdom residents Ann De Mey and Chris ‘Woody’ Woodward moved to Gove to start work at the Arnhem Club last year, they didn’t know what to expect. Now, after successfully revamping the Club’s restaurant and making a fistful of great friends, the pair are farewelling the town to go get married in Ireland, from where Ann hails. “It’s with mixed feelings that we leave - it’s sad to say goodbye, but we can’t wait to see all our friends and family back home,” said Woody, who calls England home. They’re pictured here with one of their favourite Arno customers, Bondy.

Abbott visits Darwin, snubs Nhulunbuy LAST week saw Prime Minster Tony Abbott in Darwin for two days. Chief Minister Adam Giles, who obviously didn’t have it in his own diary, had to race back to Darwin from Vietnam via charter at a cost of $100,000. Adam Giles sang the praises of his federal colleague and the announcement of the ‘white paper’ which is the plan for development of northern Australia. Adam Giles said he was “excited about the opportunities that lay ahead, creating employment and prosperity for

all Territorians”. Now more than three months since the announcement by Rio Tinto to curtail its refining operations the people of Nhulunbuy are struggling to share Adam Giles “excitement” and are desperate to know about the opportunities, prospect for employment and prosperity when 1100 jobs have disappeared from our region. And I can’t help but wonder how it is that Tony Abbott can be within an hour of Nhulunbuy on the PM’s VIP jet and not make the time or effort to call into Nhulunbuy - just

for a few hours? Why is it that the plight of our region and community just doesn’t appear to be on the radar of the CLP or coalition Governments? Clearly they just don’t care. Yo u d o n ’t n e ed a calculator to work out that Adam Giles charter alone back from Vietnam was 10 times the value of the East Arnhem tourism promotion package announced with great gusto a few weeks ago. ON a more sombre note, last week also saw a fatal workplace accident at Rio’s refinery and

the terrible loss of long term employee, Darryl Manderson. I know it has knocked our community for six. My thoughts and prayers go out to the loved ones, family, friends and workmates of Darryl. The very moving memorial service at the golf club on Sunday afternoon and the sheer number of people present, was testimony to the high regard in which he was held and the devastation that people feel about his loss. Rio Tinto are matching contributions dollar for dollar. Contributions from community members outside the Rio workforce will also be matched and my office is designated as the local collection point until mid-April. Thanks for supporting Darryl’s family during this incredibly sad time.

Chance to sleep in on Territory Day? THE Territory is home to some unique public holidays, including Picnic Day in August and Darwin Show Day, in July. Some day soon, Territory Day could be added to this list. Chief Minister Adam Giles said he wants Territory Day to be a public holiday. But for this to occur, another public holiday would have to go, he said, to make way for the change. Mr Giles told NT media that “the public need to be consulted before a decision is made about a public

holiday”. He hinted that if making Territory Day a holiday was to go ahead, the holiday to go could be May Day, held on the first Monday in May. “Public holidays, as good as they are for the community, must be balanced with the interests of business,” he said. Territory Day, on July 1 each year, marks the commencement of selfgovernment in the NT in 1978, and is the only day of the year when the sale and use of fireworks are allowed.

Learning new ways to protect ancient country A LT H O U G H l o c a l Yolngu have been tending country in East Arnhem Land for thousands of years, sometimes new technologies can help them do this job. Yirralka Rangers from a variety of Homelands attended a week-long workshop in Dhalinybuy late last month, to learn about chemical handling and weed spraying. The unit was part of their Certificate Two in Conservation and Land Management. Lecturer Cheryl O’Dwyer from Batchelor Institute of Indigenous Tertiary Education said the rangers were learning new ways to look after ancient country. “Yirralka Rangers do so much for the environment, and it’s great to know that at Batchelor we can help them learn new ways to conduct their work.” The Batchelor Institute office is based at the training centre in Nhulunbuy. Rangers, throughout the year, will also be undertaking workshops in plant and animal identification, fencing, erosion control, restoration activities and providing visitor information. Research keeping the flame burning A TEAM of researchers travelled to the edge of Arnhem Land last week, to investigate the effects of fire on savanna, as part of a project that spans 20 years. By meticulously measuring and counting all the vegetation across the same savannas, every five years for 20 years, the project has helped build a picture of the impact of fire on the tropical savanna landscapes that stretch across northern Australia. Darwin Centre for Bushfire Research (DCBR) lead researcher Professor Jeremy Russell-Smith (right) said the surveys were vital to improving understanding of the savannas to inform conservation management in the NT. “Monitoring the long-term changes in savanna vegetation is important to

understand its effects on biodiversity.” The team from Charles Darwin University, in conjunction with Kakadu National Park staff and traditional owners, re-measured 60 plots of land,

Tennis 40 years strong; not stopping now Golf results LAST year Gove Peninsula Tennis Club celebrated 40 years of history in the community, and it won’t end there, says outgoing Club Manager Nicky Mayer. The long-term club manager will be finishing up her job and moving on to Cairns in April, a move that has sparked concerns about the possibility of the end of tennis in Gove. Not to worry, said Nicky. “Tennis will be here for a long time yet.” But she also noted that there was plenty of work to be done to make sure it stays afloat. “Gove Peninsula Tennis Club committee would like to make the community aware that tennis in Gove will continue, despite my leaving. Tennis, with all its history here, intends to stay strong in the community. “But for this to work, we will need more volunteers.” Nicky said Tennis Australia

Yirrkala fathers cooking up more than good tucker

Strong Fathers and their families after a fishing and camping trip as part of the program. More photos, Page18, >>

THE taste of fresh food, much of it picked and cooked by the hands of a group of young men in Yirrkala, has locals smiling and saying “Yo manymak”. This Yolngu phrase can be translated roughly to “that’s awesome”, and it’s being used here to describe the work by the participants of a program, helping men engage in healthier lifestyles. For three years, the Miwatj Health Strong Fathers, Strong Families program has helped men focus on ways to engage positively with their community and families, by cooking, gardening, camping, fishing and much more. And men of the community, who helped forge the program side-by-side with local organisations, are now looking back at what they have been able to achieve so far. Father of one son, Walalu Mununggur, said he has found pride from the program. “And our family is

proud too. Because we’re always cooking for our kids, helping to provide for our families. “It’s been helping make our community better for now, and for the future as well.” Another participant in the program Dhamarrarr Mununggurr, who is also a young father of a four-year-old daughter, said the program has helped his relationship with her. “Helps me when I’m talking to her; I can teach her and talk to her about what I learn, and what I know to make me strong. “And this helps to make her strong, and into a better mother in the future.” Program Manager Scott Beverstock, who has been working in the region for 12 years, says the program has given local men a place to belong.

“This is a place where there’s a sense of self worth, pride in the work they do, whether it’s paid or unpaid, as participants or workers in the program. “Looking at the difference in the men’s attitudes, and personally having known them since they were kids to young men over the years I’ve lived here, to what I see these fellas are achieving now, against quite a lot of odds, is amazing.” Mr Beverstock also talked about how it was not just the men who have benefitted from the program, but the children of the community too. The men grow a community garden at Yirrkala School, which has had a positive impact on the students there who see them at work every day. “Kids are seeing strong male

role models, up here, present every day of the week.” Looking towards the future, Mr Beverstock knows there is still much for the program to achieve. There are some long-term goals in place that the men have set, including establishing a Yolngurun catering company later this year, to service the region. But until then, the men involved in the program have a safe place to call their own. “I think we’ve created a strong, safe environment for men to work in and to develop their own personal skills,” Mr Beverstock said. With programs in place such as Miwatj Strong Fathers, and the closely related Families as First Teachers (FaFT), the Yirrkala community is currently sitting in good stead for the future.

STUDENTS MAKE CLEAN SWEEP OF YIRRKALA STUDENTS didn’t waste a moment fixing up the state of their school last week, for the annual Schools Clean Up Day last Thursday. It was the first big whole-school event for Yirrkala School this term, with all students pitching in to rid the school of what ended up being about 30 bags of rubbish. Pre-school kids worked together with Year 12 students in a buddy system to help each other clean up their environment. Senior Cultural Advisor Wayulu Wunungmurra said it was a positive way to teach kids “how to look after their own backyard”. They followed the clean-up with a walk to nearby Shady Beach, where the kids were taught about the area’s modern history, and the importance of looking after their own land. Motocross speeds into action for 2014 Photos: CASSIE HENNIG A NEW season of moto madness has officially roared off to a good start, with Nhulunbuy Motorcycle Club holding their first meet for the year on Sunday, February 23. The day before the first event, the club held their sign-on day which saw 15 families and four singles join up for another exciting year of motorcross. A good turnout of 26 riders showed up for the first ride, both seniors and juniors taking turns on the track. There had been some major track repairs undertaken by club members following the

big January rains, to fill some potholes which, by reports, could have swallowed some riders up whole. NMCC Secretary Cassie Hennig said it was a good first run, with a couple of spills but no real injuries. “Everyone loved the track on the day, so great to see all the hard work on it has paid off.” The next moto meet and AGM for the club will be held on Saturday, March 15, with all positions on the committee open. If anyone wants to put their hand up for a position, contact Cassie at secretaryNMCC@ yahoo.com.au.
