The many faces of GPIS- Jackson Roach

O

riginally from Tulsa, Oklahoma, Jackson attended Tulsa School of Arts and Sciences and received a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Oklahoma State University. He doubled majored in history and philosophy for his undergraduate studies and finished his M.S. in International Studies with a focus on international development, society, and education. While in graduate school, Jackson wrote a thesis about children and education in Nepal and completed an internship at a human rights NGO called Children and Women in Social Service and Human Rights (CWISH) in Kathmandu, Nepal. Thus far, Jackson has focused on international development and would like to concentrate on cultural and regional comparative studies at GPIS, where he is a first year Ph.D. student. Jackson served in the Air National Guard for six years until 2012.

U

pon completion of his degree, Jackson hopes to work at policy institute or think tank, or become a Foreign Service officer for the department of state. Jackson attributes his determination and motivation to his experiences, especially serving in the military. Five facts about Jackson: 1. He plays guitar, drums, and piano. 2. Jackson has travelled to and around Nepal and Argentina. He would love to visit the middle east, especially Bahrain or Saudi Arabia and would also like to return to Nepal and travel to Bhutan and India. 3. Jackson received his bachelor’s degree in 4 years while working full-time (odd jobs such as serving, general maintenance for the university, and even custodial work) all while being a mechanic on F-16 fighter jets in the Air National Guard. 4. Jackson studied French in High School and college and also learned Spanish. 5. His favorite fiction authors have always been Tom Robbins, Christopher Moore, and Dave Eggers. Jackson also enjoys reading Buddhist and Hindu literature but is also a fan of Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens, and Sam Harris . This study abroad course aims to familiarize students with Israeli history, society, and identity. Students will learn about the history of the State of Israel through lectures given by your Israeli guide and other experts in the field of Israel studies. Through reading novels, short stories, and selected poetry by multicultural contemporary Israeli writers - including women and Arab Israeli writers - it is intended that students will gain the rhetorical tools and background knowledge needed to interrogate and analyze the literature presented. Also, students will deepen their understanding of the course literature and Israeli society by visiting the setting of stories and meeting with selected Israeli writers. Through the lenses of Israeli cinema and literature, students will examine Israeli identity and questions such as, how do Israelis view themselves?, how does the world media, especially American media, assess Israel?, and, how do you, as a student in the course, see Israel after observing and experiencing its diverse culture and literature? Additionally, the course will examine Israeli identity as constructed through being in a continuous state of war, being an immigrant, a soldier, a Palestinian, a religious Jew, a Holocaust survivor, a woman, a Kibbutz member and more. Students must register and pay tuition for the summer 2014 credits listed above in order to participate in this program. ▲

In recent years Europe has become the destination of choice for many people looking for better jobs and opportunities. Especially Europe’s North serves as a magnet for people from the economically weaker southern parts of the European Union with thousands of qualified Greeks, Spaniards and Portuguese seeking a better life outside their own countries. But from elsewhere, too the economic pull of Europe, with its generous social welfare systems, attracts many. For the most part, this migration encounters a mixed reception. On the one hand, Europe is aging fast, its demographic development is dismal and new qualified labor is critical to sustain Europe’s growth and place in the global market. On the other hand, the diversity that comes with migration has created deep fissures in European societies. Governments struggle to develop integration policies that reduce social tensions between migrants and local populations; industry demands for human talent clash with traditional national identities; and fears of economic exploitation and cultural displacement lead to hostilities. This Study Abroad program takes you to Berlin and Brussels. Berlin is Europe’s new melting-pot with the highest rate of migrants and the most challenging social environment. We will meet with industry, political, labor, and social leaders to learn about the challenges of attracting foreign talent and avoiding social tension. In Brussels, we will meet with leaders in the European Parliament and the European Commission to learn about European-level initiatives to foster the influx of new human resources and the national preferences states bring to bear. ▲Students must register and pay for summer term 2014 credit in order to participate in this program.

Study Abroad Scholarship

The Global Studies Grant for Student Travel and Study Abroad Designed to support foreign language training and other academic studies abroad, this grant provides supplemental funds for American students who already are studying abroad under the auspices of an official study abroad program conducted by an accredited academic institution. As with our faculty grants, GSF seeks to support a formative experience abroad for the recipient, who also must share this experience with others upon his or her return – ideally, with multiple audiences and varied media. We are particularly interested in funding the study of strategically important countries and languages (as defined by the US Departments of State and Defense). Applicants must be US citizens and currently enrolled full-time and in good academic standing in an accredited secondary or postsecondary institution. Among the most significant selection criteria are academic performance (as indicated in courses, grades, recommendations, and other achievements), program merit, and outreach potential. Grant recipients will be expected to acknowledge GSF’s support, to report on their experiences, and to work with GSF to share those experiences as widely as possible. To apply for this grant, please complete our online information form and submit the following materials by July 1, 2014: A letter of application of no more than two pages that specifies your reasons for traveling, your intended program and schedule, how this particular grant can help you, and how you plan to share your experience with others upon your return; A copy of your resume or curriculum vitae; A transcript from the schools you have attended, including all post-secondary institutions (unofficial transcripts will suffice for the first round); Two letters of recommendation addressing your capacity to make the most of this experience while overseas and when you return, at least one of which must be from a recent academic instructor; An official endorsement from your study abroad program or another institutional authority, indicating your travel and study plans, the anticipated dates, and the institution’s capacity and willingness to receive and process a grant for this purpose from GSF, which is a 501(c)(3), tax-exempt organization (as grant distributions will be made to the school for subsequent redistribution to the recipient). All materials should be submitted electronically (either as PDF files or Word documents) to grants@globalstudiesfoundation.org.

Program Information: Graduate and undergraduate interns from local colleges and universities typically work at JFSC for one semester, performing various duties that satisfy college needs and provide valuable experience to the interns. Some receive college credit; others are motivated by the experience they gain. In addition to satisfying the needs of JFSC and the interns, this program is also a key element in our outreach to the local community. Many interns have served as research assistants in support of the core curriculum, focus studies (electives), and our War gaming model. Others have worked in technical areas, where their current skills have proven invaluable in duties such as programming, PC troubleshooting, and database administration. The ultimate benefits of a JFSC internship program are many: assistance to faculty and staff in a variety of areas, some combination of credit and experience for the students, and significant outreach to local colleges and universities. FLACSO-ISA - Global and Regional Powers in a Changing World

Buenos Aires, Argentina -- JULY 23-25, 2014

Paper and/or panel proposals are due by Tuesday, October 1st, 2013

Website: http://www.isanet.org/Conferences/FLACSOBuenosAires2014.aspx. The increasing gravitation of emerging economies is changing the landscape of international politics. This has implications for the possibilities of a new global order where emerging powers have begun to engage in the construction of new norms, governance institutions, development agendas and citizenship practices. Likewise, the context of regionalism and regionalization processes is also being transformed with the global projection of emerging powers. China, India, Brazil, Russia and South Africa are increasingly acquiring pivotal roles in the articulation of regional and global dynamics. At the same time, traditional powers became more focused on pressing domestic and regional challenges due to the financial and economic crisis that started in 2008. These changes and reconfigurations constitute a new terrain of innovation, collaboration and dispute of an increasingly wider scope of policies, economic interests, identities and sources of legitimization of the international order. Graduate Student Workshops: As a highlight to the program, we will be sponsoring graduate student workshops to allow graduate students and post-docs to present their research in a small-group panel setting with detailed feedback from senior scholars, and to allow for greater professional development and networking opportunities.

Efforts to do so are inhibited by a general lack of international solidarity toward protection, while many legal and operational frameworks employed were created over a half-century ago. The causes and patterns of forced displacement have changed, with much neither involving a ‘well-founded fear of persecution’ or the crossing of an international border. The past twenty years have seen the increased recognition of internal displacement, statelessness and the migratory implications of natural disasters, climate change and urbanisation. This panel thus asks if the mechanisms for addressing forced displacement are still fit for purpose, or if continued protracted displacement crises signal a failure of global governance.
