CAMBODIAN CHEF KIMSAN SOK JOINS STAR CHEF TEAM AT SALA BAÏ EVENT – SINGAPORE

Sala Baï Hotel & Restaurant School recently held their annual ‘Touch Sala Baï‘ dinner and auction evening in Singapore. It was an honor to have our very own Assistant Executive Chef Kimsan Sok invited to attend and participate in the event as a former alumni of the school. Kimsan is now heading Embassy Restaurant as half of The Kimsan Twins, along with Executive Chef Kimsan Pol. The annual dinner and auction is held to raise money for Sala Baï which every year trains a select group of underprivileged Khmer youth (free-of-charge) valuable skills to enter the growing Siem Reap hospitality industry. The school has so far graduated 1,200 young Cambodians, 70% of whom are women, and all have successfully been employed. This year the Touch Sala Baï dinner was raising money specifically for their new student housing facility, which will provide accommodation for future generations of students. Chef Kimsan Sok was invited to join their Star Guest Chef team – Executive Chef Sandro Falbo of The Fullerton Hotel & Fullerton Bay Hotel , Chef Eric of Sofitel Sentosa Resort & Spa and Culinary Director of Capella Singapore Chef David Senia – to prepare a special set menu in the Grand Ballroom for the evening. Accompanying her in support of Sala Baï was our own Angkor W team – Executive Chef Kimsan Pol (Embassy Restaurant), Chef Corentin Hennion and Clem Balasoto (PR & Communications Manager).

The event was supported by 280 guests

The evening was not just a great chance for Chef Kimsan Sok to work with some of Singapore’s top Chef talent, it was also a chance for guests to hear from former graduates of the school. Mr. Ratha, Mr. Veasna and Ms. Sareth, all past students, were also invited along to share their inspirational stories of success with the attendees. Overall the night was a big success and all the dishes were delicious. We would like to thank and congratulate the organizing team from Sala Baï and also take this moment to applaud the efforts of Chef Kimsan Sok, a model example of how the school empowers young Khmer to follow their dreams to reach the top of their field.

JOINING THE ANGKOR WAT HALF MARATHON So you are interested in joining the Angkor Wat Int’l Half Marathon? Well we were, so for the first time the Angkor W office crew assembled together to take part in the 20th anniversary of this annual event. The whole office team wanted to join the occasion, so to accommodate everyone we chose the less demandTeam warming up before the race begins ing 3km Fun Run rather than the challenging full race. One pleasing additional aspect of the whole event is that it is for charity, “raising relief for victims of antipersonnel mines in Cambodia.” The start was a particularly early one and probably the most challenging part for some, with the team assembling at 5am to make our way in to the UNESCO listed Angkor Archaeological Park where the race is held every year. This year, as announced by the Phnom Penh Post in their follow-up article, there was approximately 8500 participants! Mix that with onlookers, organizers, VIP’s and the regular stream of visitors going to see sunrise over the iconic Angkor Wat temple and you have a sizable crowd. But rather than take away from the event the large group of participants assembled at the entrance to Angkor Wat (the official start/finish point for the marathon) added to the atmosphere and excitement. We strongly recommend if you are taking part in the event, allow plenty of time for the journey into Angkor, especially those competing in the Half Marathon as it is the first to start.

2015 Int’l Half Marathon participated by over 8k

The event was well organized with ‘Race Package’ collection avail able up to 3 days in advance. This included everything you need: event information, registration number, official T-shirt, race chip (for those in the 21km and 10km races) and much more, in a handy reusable bag. After a relatively short wait for the start of the 21km and 10km races it was our turn! Collectively we ran, jogged and speed walked the comfortable 3km course that followed the ancient moat surrounding Angkor Wat. It makes for a stunning backdrop! The 10km and 21km races also take in the stunning ruins of Angkor Thom, Bayon, Elephant Terrace and more, in what is arguably the most picturesque marathon in the world.All-in-all it was a fantastic day and a great opportunity to bond with the Angkor W team. Big thanks to race organizers and this year’s principle sponsor Manulife for making it all happen. If you are joining the next Angkor Wat International Half Marathon make sure to drop into one of our great restaurants in Siem Reap for your pre/post marathon food & drinks.
