MORWELL V SALE

PAST ROUND 4's By Paul Carter

5 YEARS AGO … 4TH MAY, 2013 Morwell and Sale remained unbeaten after four rounds. Morwell had a commanding three quarter time lead over Bairnsdale before the Redlegs kicked six final quarter goals to reduce the margin to 31 points. Adam Bailey and Tom Crosby starred for the Tigers with Dean Macdonald contributing four goals. Kane Ashwood was best for Bairnsdale, with Mark Sellings their best goalkicker with four. Sale was made to work all the way against Warragul, the Gulls kicking five goals to two in the final term, the Magpies still home by sixteen points. Traralgon dominated Moe kicking 9.6 to nil in the first term as they cruised to a huge win. Ash Dugan (8 goals), Jackson Hall (6) and Adrian Slottje (5) enjoyed their day up forward for the Maroons. Wonthaggi gritted their way to a 24 point win over Leongatha, while Drouin stunned Maffra with six first quarter goals. The Eagles steadied with six of their own in the second term, then extended the margin to win by forty points. Darren Sheen and Daniel Bedggood combined for eleven of Maffra’s fifteen goals.

goalkicking for their respective sides. Little separated Traralgon and Leongatha all day. In a reasonably low-scoring affair, Traralgon four goals in the third quarter proved decisive. Sale and Garfield went goal for goal in the first half before the Magpies drew away after half time, David Ivey (5) and Adrian Cox (4) leading the way for Sale. The closest match of the round was played on Sunday at Warragul where the home side hung on to win by four points.Joel Morgan and Ryan Davey were busy in the midfield for the Gulls while Brad Carmody kicked five of the Hawks’ eleven goals. Morwell had the bye.

30 YEARS AGO … 14TH MAY, 1988 Traralgon and Warragul remained unbeaten leaders after solid wins over Leongatha and TTU respectively. Neil Mildenhall and Russell Northe were impressive in the centre for Traralgon as the Maroons added eight third quarter goals to put the result beyond doubt. It was also in the third term where Warragul broke away from TTU with midfielders Michael Vick and Mark Trewella in top form. Steve Dunkley kicked seven goals for the Two Blues and Roger Harper kicked five for the winners. Morwell, with Jeff Knowles on target with seven goals, was too strong for Maffra, while Moe had eleven players share the sixteen goals they scored against Bairnsdale. The final game saw a brave effort from Churchill. The Kangaroos matched it with Sale in the first and last quarters, but the Magpies’ seven goal second term and three goals to none in the third took them to a sixty point three quarter time lead.

40 YEARS AGO … 22ND APRIL, 1978 Yallourn / Yallourn North and Sale played a highly entertaining game which saw a combined total of 43 goals being scored. The Blues stunned the Magpies with quarters of nine, eight and six goals to lead by 80 points at the final break. To their credit, Sale came home with 8.8 to 3.2, but the damage had been done. Ray DeCarli and Rudi Bence won the midfield battles, while Neil Meredith and Bernie Howard each kicked five goals for YYN. Maffra came from almost six goals down to overrun Moe in the final quarter to win by three points, Leongatha also coming from behind Warragul to win in the dying stages. Morwell and Bairnsdale had little between them all afternoon. At the breaks Bairnsdale led by one point at quarter time and two at the final break, with scores locked on 6.6.42 at half time. Fans expecting a nail biter would have been shocked as the Tigers unleashed a barnstorming ten goal final term, coach Danny Moncur kicking five goals for the Tigers. Jeff Knowles, Kevin Smith and Steven Allison were the Tigers’ best, while Bairnsdale was best served by Laurie Haylock, John Johnstone, Billy King and Murray Frew (7 goals). Traralgon had the bye.

The two have contested eight finals matches over that time including the last two years’ Grand Finals. There was a period between 2003 and 2011 where Maffra dominated Leongatha (and almost everyone else), but the last seventeen matches between them has seen the honours about shared (9-8 Maffra’s way). This is an eagerly anticipated match, as both already seem destined to be going to feature heavily again come finals time.

Both these teams are expected to be the big improvers for this season, which makes today’s game somewhat of a litmus test about how they are travelling. It’s seems at this stage that seven or eight teams will be hotly pressing for a spot in the top five at season’s end, which could well make the outcome of this game one of the “what if …” games when the dust settles on Round 18.

In the last nine home and away meetings, dating back to late 2013, the home team has finished victorious on all but one occasion. While the Tigers rebuild their stocks, Sale is intent on having a successful first half of the season, to avoid the disappointment of the last two years where they have had to play catch-up, only to finish agonisingly close, but out, of the finals. The Tigers will make the Magpies work hard for every score this afternoon.

With their win there in Round 10 last year, Traralgon has become the first visiting team to have a positive record on this ground. The record stands 10-9 in the Maroons’ favour, with two games drawn. The Power has had a poor start to the season so far and simply must start winning games against top quality opposition such as Traralgon or their season will quickly slip away.

A huge Sunday crowd is sure to be on hand and a carnival atmosphere will surround the field of battle. Warragul won both games against Drouin comfortably in 2017 to break the Hawks’ run of five wins against them. The Gulls seem, even at this early stage, to be a hot contender for a Final Five position, while Drouin is showing its renowned fighting qualities, and is sure to break through for a win or two very soon.

CLUB NOTES LEONGATHA Super weather greeted us again at Parrot Park last Saturday and the round 3 encounter threw up a mixed bag of results across the board. The U16s minus a couple of their stars found the Morwell team a little to strong on the day. The thirds were far too strong in their game. The seconds had to work hard for a win and the seniors flexed their muscles for a huge win! In netball we got off to a great start with our 13s and 15s recording strong, confidence building wins. Unfortunately the 17s went down by 1 in a game that could really have been theirs. In C, B and A grade Morwell were more organised and far more accurate under the ring and recorded convincing wins in all these grades.

It was remiss of me last week not mentioning one of those great moments around a club.

The player auction results see a very keen interest from those who purchased groups. This weeks auction players were Georgina Drew, Ash Gilliam, Lily Scott Blake van Rooy and Chris Dunne. Hope this makes some readers happy.

It was with great joy that Grant and Jintana

Last Saturday night we had our annual ball. It was super to have people putting their hand up to organise tables, well done all. The night was a great chance for everyone to get together and let the hair down. There was plenty of dancing and a few bevos as well. I would just like to say a big thankyou to those that helped in the set up and especially to those that helped with the clean up.

CLUB NOTES MAFFRA Miserable one Saturday Perfect the next - the conditions led to a high number of players experiencing cramps over the day. The closest match of the day the U18's produced the most numbers as these two desperate teams fought every issue to the end - to the Powers great credit they have done a lot of work on their juniors in the past few years. The most startling, for us, were the U16s they jumped us in the first half but our blokes showed they could match them in the 3rd term. Our smaller frames could not cope in the final term, but that will come. The U18's for 10 minutes Wonthaggi attacked relentlessly for just two points then Tom Bradshaw exerted his frame into the action, his tackling and evasion gave us a small lead that endured for the match. Cayden Jones grew into his big frame over the course of this game, Rick Howard showed his class in an unselfish display and Josh Edey was a presence throughout the game. A brave performance from both teams. Our Ressies include a number of prospective senior players unearthing another in Jim Reeves in this match, Jamie McIntosh another rugged midfield body with a prodigious kick and Ryan Thatcher will have a number much lower than 57 when he retires. The quality of football was high and against an opposition that would not surrender - in spite of just the 18 men was entertaining. The Seniors put on a breathtaking display of team football, their run and support had the Thaggi's measure. Danny Butcher, Jarryd Clohesy, Lachy Channing, Michael Coleman led a deep list of selfless actions by our team to this win. Our players wore an armband for ex player and treasurer in the late 70's, when we moved from deep despair to finalists, Alan Still. Our sympathies have been extended to Viv and her family. Our senior girls had a field day on the netball courts, winning three from three senior games, and putting all three grades in the top five. Our A graders are proving a real chance for finals, beating Wonthaggi 37-25 and putting on a show for loyal spectators. As Wonthaggi crept within a possible comeback in the final quarter, our defence upped their game, long arms managing to find the ball at the right moments, denying the Power a comeback. Best on court went to defenders Sarah Luke and Paige Biddle.

26

Now in fourth position, the team will feel the losses of our newest recruit, former Magpie goal shooter Meg Gordyn and star centre Emma Allman, as they abscond to play state level netball. B grade celebrated their first win for the season, snatching victory by three goals, after an upset loss to Sale in round one and a devastating draw to Drouin. Laying everything on the line, Mikahla Callahan and Mollie Huts were unshakable in goals, and steadied to clinch the win 38-35. The win also puts the girls in fourth place. In a rematch of last year’s qualifying final, our C graders made sure the Power knew this year was a new year, taking control of the game early to steer victory in their direction, 52-36. Steph Howson stood out in midcourt, and as always Anna Gaw was stoic in goal shooter – a real asset to the team and club. C grade are now second to Traralgon on the ladder. Our juniors weren’t quite as strong, except for the whopping 61-18 win in a dominating performance by our under 15s. The under 17s, feeling the loss of goal attack Leyla Berry to an ankle injury and keeper Meg Shelton to a knee injury, lost 32 to 49, while the under 13s went down 24-46. This week we take on the reigning premiers knowing that we have the form necessary all we need is the opportunity, today the conditions were ours.

CLUB NOTES MOE It was a spectacular day at Western Park last Saturday, with the sun shining brighter than a cricket ball tampered by the Paki’s, players across the board were able to exhibit their skills and come home with a clean sweep from both football and netball. Seniors Responded well after the acid was put on a few last week to run away with the game in the final term to be 58 point winners. With a few positional changes the players acquitted themselves admirably and showcased their ability to transition the ball freely whilst keeping their opponents to just five majors. Best players were the back line quartet of Charlie Rieniets, Tyson Biffin, Lachlan Rees and Mitchell Stanlake whose second efforts were commendable. Others to perform well were Darnell Grech and Scott Van Dyk who finished with four. Congratulations to Jay Murphy who made his Senior debut. Reserves Put in a decent four quarter effort with many contributors to celebrate Karl Mutke’s 150th game in style. With the late Avicii pumping during the warm up, players went about their business to eventually put the game away after half time. Best players were Jai Massese, Luke Mackay, Juzzi Morrow, Ben Morrow, Karl Mutke and Calvin Fry who nearly killed Mooch. The match was made all the more special for the Morrow family, as Ben, Tyler, Juzzi and Sam were all able to play a game together for the first time. Under 18’s Faced a fired up Warragul and gave Dos a first win as Coach. With the game up for grabs in the first three quarters, Moe were able to steady in the last to finish 20 point winners. Skipper Nathan Balfour played a leaders game to perfection, the man with the odd kicking style Josh Galea also found plenty of it, along with Zack Skinner and Darcy Durham. Others to perform well were Jack Walton and Ben Van Dyk. The club would like to extend its thoughts to Rick Galea who is on the mend after suffering a freak illness during the week. Hope to see you back on the sidelines soon mate. Under 16’s Put the game to rest with a five goal to nil first quarter, to go from strength to strength across the remaining three to record a 43 point win. Best players were Brandon Watson, Bailey Brown, Tajh Eden, Jess McGrath, Hayden Molesworth and Harry Hopkins. Play of the day went to Ben Fleming, whose silver service ruck work palmed the ball straight into the hands of Tajh Eden who in turn hit an inside fifty target lace out. Netball A Grade Had to overcome a number of injuries and a shortage of players, but were still able to get a tight 50 to 43 win on the board. The match was extremely competitive with the

MAJOR RAFFLE First prize $38K Audi! Best players were Elise Sim who has had a great start to the season, along with Shannon Freeman and Emily McInnes. B Grade (From Krissy Travers) Had a hard match for three quarters but our fitness and team work got us through in the end with a solid fourth quarter to win the match comfortably by eleven goals. Best players were Carly Mullen-Bianconi and Elise Sim, who may well be the first person in club history to get best on in two games on the same day. C Grade Fought hard and found their noses in front at the final whistle to win 37 to 38. With numerous changes in momentum Moe were able to scrape home and secure the all-important four points. Under 17’s Were absolutely ruthless in their execution to win easily by a large margin, Moe piled on the goals to create some important percentage on the competition ladder. Best players were Patty McInnes and Tayla Summersgill. Under 15’s (From Shannon Freeman) Star game by all players, after playing in poor weather conditions and missing players last week the girls came to play and put in their best performance so far. Final scores were a resounding 52 to 28 win. Best players were Laini Galea and Chealsea Lawn. Under 13’s Got back on the winners list with a resounding victory, going from strength to strength across the four quarters. Best players were Ashley Paul and Hannah Davis.

CLUB NOTES MORWELL Today we are very pleased to see the unveiling of the new netball courts at Morwell. Our netballers have been very patient waiting for courts and amenities and today we welcome stage 1 of what will be a first-class netball facility. Thanks to Lucy Bertrand for her initial drive and then great support from Claire Allison, Kellie Bertrand, Michael Henderson, Russ Donoghue and a fantastic group of energetic people behind the scenes. Last week our netballers again produced 4 wins from 6 games. A, B & C grade victories must have head coach Rachel Allison smiling. The U17 one point win was also great reward in a tight contest. SALE FO

Big hello to all Magpie Fans and we hope you’ve made the trip to Tigerland for what will be another great day of country footy & netball. Congratulations to Corey “Corka” Oliver who plays his 50th Senior game today. Corka actually came to us via Morwell FC so I’m sure they will be out to spoil his party so let’s hope our boys get the win for him.

GI P PSLA N D LEAGUE In Football news our U16s had a good 10 point win in what we believe to be about 6yrs since the 16s have won at Traralgon. Best players were Harry Ronchi, Sam Smith, Banga Reid, Ostin Waugh & Mason Benson.

The U18s continue their big improvement and although they didn’t get the win they are most definitely heading in the right direction. Best players were Jack Allman, Mitch Bown, Tayler Stephenson & Zac Hider. It’s a similar story with the reserves. Previous years we have been lucky to score and whilst this occasion it was a 60 point margin the contest was a lot closer than the scores reflect. Keep getting behind Nugget lads we are on the way up. It’s been awhile since we could say we won the Peter Hug Cup! Our senior boys arguably had their best win in a few years and came away with an excellent win under lights in what was a fitting tribute to young Pete. Best players Mitch Dowse sponsored by LANBROHINI, Jack Lipman, Kane Martin sponsored by REACTIVE & Boof Dessent sponsored by RAL CONSTRUCTIONS Thanks for reading and good luck to all teams today. CLUB NOTES WONTHAGGI On a surprisingly mild start to the day, we ventured the 2.5hr trip to Maffra. With expectations running high for a successful day. Under 16’s, After an early start to make the long trip to Maffra, our boys prepared well and came out of the blocks flying with a great 1st quarter. Continuing on, with a good display of disciplined team football. We were able to get the job done convincingly. Under 18’s, this was an entertaining match to watch, the skills were almost matched by both teams. After leading at half time, we were just down at the last break. Maffra came away with the win in the end, but we are going well, just without a win. Let’s change that around today. Reserves, This game had the hall marks to be a great game, unfortunately due to poor respect to their team mates, a number of players decided the trip was too much and didn’t turn up. Those who played fought out a game that should have been closer in the end. Well done guys. Thank you, to Julie Waters for your work as team manager. Our club appreciates helpers putting their hand up. Seniors, A disappointing result from a team that showed so much promise and potential. Maffra were good at home, but we hope the form of our team turns around shortly. We hope the eye injury to Will, is healing well. A Grade, With 2 of our regulars out, 2 girls stepped up. We didn’t come away with the win, but we did see Courtney Brann and Chloe debut in their 1st A grade game. Our

defenders worked tirelessly all game. Awards, Mitchell & Co -Courtney Blair. Bonny Huitema Beauty – Eva Lindsay. Wonthaggi Club – Annabelle Williams. B Grade, Awesome game today girls, you all sweated your backsides off. We were even till the 3rd term; you all fought hard, but just ran out of time. Awards, Wonthaggi Club – Jo Duscher, Bonny Huitema Beauty – Carley Gilliland. C Grade, On a hot day for netball, Our girls had some great patches of play. Just need to convert these into goals which unfortunately we didn’t do. Today we lift and show how well we can play. Under 17’s, Under 15’s, Under 13’s, Great win by the 13’s, under the coaching direction of Sophie Bolam. The team worked hard defensively, and were able to finish off their good work with some great passages of play. You play like you train. Keep it up Charges. Awards, Tess Wingfield. GO POWER, you bloody bewdy.

CLUB NOTES TRARALGON

TRARALGON What a difference a week makes with last week being horrible conditions to play footy in and this week perfect. Our under 16’s got the day started and although well beaten early in the game, they improved as time went on and eventually lost by 10 points thanks to a goal kicked by Sale with the last kick of the game. Coach Kev Foley is bringing these boys together and when they get their first win on the board they will show vast improvement very quickly with the extra confidence that a win will bring. Better players were Reagan McDonald, Tom Hamilton and Jayson Musgrove. The under 18’s took to the field expecting a tough contest against Sale and that is what the got. A tight game that was highly skilled and both sides battled as hard as they could to get the job done. In the end it was our young Maroons that ran away in the second half to a well-deserved 40 point win. These boys are building and there are exciting times ahead. Best players were Thomas McMahon, Isaac Copeland and Flynn Shields. 20 minutes before the Reserves game and our guys only had 15 players available to take the field. Some fast recruiting of a couple of 30 to 40+ year old’s and our youth policy was implemented. Thanks to Ian Davidson, Luke Henderson and Grant Little for donning the jumper along with Lachy Patterson, Ben Cheetham and Kade Marsh from our under 18’s who all contributed to the 60 point win. This group is predominantly made up of our under 18’s from last season and they are jelling together quite nicely, again building the more they play together. Best players were Wilson Gaudion, Anthony Barrett who is new to the club this season and Lachy McDonald. The senior side welcomed a few players back and Chris Urie was in for his first game for the club. The first term saw both sides play fast footy with T’gon having the better of the contest but bad inaccurate kicking by Traralgon gave Sale a slim lead . The second term was a similar tale with T’gon getting out to a 3 goal lead but a couple of late goals to Sale cut the lead just 9 points to Traralgon. Jacko McMahon missed an early goal but from there it was all Sale with their big men dominating the air and us not using the ball well it was Sale running out winners by 22 points. Best were Tate Marsh, Chris Urie with 3 goals and Mark Collison. Our A Graders had their closest game to date against Sale but managed to still put another comfortable win on the board. Stacey O had a tough contest in Centre but kept her cool and ended up with a best on court performance. Under 13s had their first loss against a very talented side going

38

FOOTBALL CLUB

THE MAROONS down by only 8 goals but they are confident they have the ability to match it with them next time. Under 15s had the hardest game of the day against a very tall and polished opposition which included many premiership players from last year. They are hoping for their first win when we travel down to Wonthaggi next week. Jnr “Coaches” Awards: U13 – Tamia Noda, Emma Farley & Amali Adams, U15 – Chelsey Webster, Allyssa Tangi & Molly Van Berkel, U17 – Heidi Gaudion, Chelsea Livingstone & Lauryn KingChurch. This week we travel to Wonthaggi and we wish all players taking the field or netball courts today the best of luck. Go Maroons.

We made the long trip east to Bairnsdale last week and had a challenging day against three quality Redleg teams in beautiful weather. We showed we can be competitive but need to sustain it for much longer. In the seniors we were dominant for the first term but didn’t capitalise on the scoreboard. Bairnsdale lifted in the second term to outscore us by 4 goals at the main break. After half time the Redlegs were dominant although we had several periods of really good play. Our turnovers really hurt us. Best players were: Eddie Morris (Barry Plant Award) ,Jackson Kos (Middels ) ,David Olsen (Family Hotel ), Jeb McLeod (Kim’s Kitchen ) and Cam Jolly (Steam and Riddles). Our under 18’s had another tough contest but fought it out bravely. Despite being short in numbers we are big in endeavour. Our boys have talent, we just lack depth at the moment. Best players were: Kiam Rose (Select Office Award), captain Charlie Bethune (Intersport), Blake Roberts ( Community Bank ), Regan Hodge (Community Bank) and Marco Kulas (Jakks Pizza). Our young under 16 side were soundly beaten by the Redlegs East Giipsland squad. There were many passages of good play by the young Hawks but we struggled to convert up forward. Our boys are really looking forward to the clash against Warragul. Best players were: Logan Corbet (Select Office Award) , Sam Dennis (Intersport) , Tom Evans (Community Bank), Shaun Custance ( Community Bank ) and Trent Kearney (Jakks Pizza). Our Club person of the week is Raelene Fry who is our hard working Treasurer. Raelene also does anything she can to help around the club whether that be organising afternoon teas or helping in the Canteen. We greatly value her contribution. CLUB NOTES WARRAGUL Last week we welcomed Moe for a highly anticipated clash given the ladder positions in most grades. It was also the Anzac clash which you would hope would rally the competitive spirits. It certainly did for the Moe lads who came to play. The main game began in blistering fashion with hard tackling and quick ball movement the highlight. The standard and pace of the game was excellent. It was Moe that settled the better and they lead at the first two changes with the hosts still well in the game. Sadly for us the Lions were far more accurate and efficient only conceding a solitary goal while the managed to pile on eight majors. It was difficult to watch in the end but due credit goes to Moe this time. Our best were Jake Horstman (Downtowner) who did a great job again, Brad Hefford ( Railway Hotel ) , Nick Stevenson ( Frankies) who was great in defence, Tyssen Morrow ( Voyage Fitness ) and Michael Coombes ( Moloneys Pizza). It was 2 v 3 in the reserves and another good game was on offer but we knew Moe would be up for the challenge. After a slow start from us the Lions were up and about early and enjoyed a 23 point break at half time even though our blokes were in the hunt. Hopeful of a second half resurgence Warragul were in the forward 50 a number of times but so were the Lions who were more productive and led by 34 at the last change. We couldn’t quite match Moe in the finish who ran out 41 points the better. Lachie Miller was our best with Will Cole not far behind. Kyle Cant gets the Waterwise award with Josh Fairfull and Leigh Sheehan in the mix.

42

The under 18s was a cracking game but we were

sent from top spot to 4th after we lead for the first half. In a real slog after that the Moe lads fought

just that bit harder to get a win. Paddy Mulqueen

received the Warraview Joinery award with Liam

Gilliam ( Wild Dog), Will Gown in the wards again with Josh Notman ( Sharkeys ) and Sam Fennell (McCafe).

Our under 16s came up against a good side in Moe that are now undefeated after a 43 point win over

our lads. Our young players will improve as they are all fresh faces with plenty of upside to come. Our

best were Jake Kallady, Connor Ives, Will Hatfield, Beau Cusden, Corey Maric and Josh Bloye.

Our netballers also had a tough day on court with

the closest game being the C grade who lost by a goal.

I’m sure we will bounce back after a hard week

on the track to take on Drouin this Sunday for the Gazette Cup.

Travel safely and GO GULLS.
