Benjamin Wynn a.k.a. Deru is an Emmy Award-winning composer, sound designer and producer.
Deru grew up in Chicago, where his earliest influences came across the airwaves of the legendary University of Chicago radio station, WHPK. Listening to hip-hop and specifically its use of static in music, Wynn began his first forays into manipulating sound. He continued his sonic explorations at the California Institute of the Arts, where he studied synthesis, digital signal processing, acoustics, music theory and composition, and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Music Technology. While at CalArts, Ben also delved into world music, studying Balinese gamelan, African drumming and hand percussion. His multi-layered musical sensibility combines hiphop, electronic, world music and classical composition.
1979 is a concept album and sculptural object, featuring nine songs by Deru accompanied by nine short films by video artist Anthony Ciannamea, that are housed in a customized handheld video projector. The subject matter is nostalgic and emotive, focusing on common origins and shared human experiences. A limited run of the projectors will be produced, and the videos will be made publicly available through an interactive website featuring a gallery of user- submitted “memories”.

For Andy and Edwin White, the brothers behind Orlando’s Tonstartssbandht, a song is a living, breathing thing. Through constant touring, the Whites’ songs both take shape and change shape, becoming something a little different every night as they explore the possibilities inherent within them. With time, attention, and intention, these songs—long, languid, full of open musical questions and temporary answers—become distinct objects, and the process begins again. On Petunia, Tonstartssbandht’s 18th album and second for Mexican Summer, they bring us to the earliest moments of this process, showing off a barn full of hatchlings already decked with splendid plumage.
Using little more than a 12-string guitar and a drum kit, Andy and Edwin weave together the gentle headiness of Laurel Canyon and the sweaty pacing of Cologne; like a gyroscope, its constant motion produces the illusion of stillness—and that stillness gives it a sense of intimacy and introspection, something that’s further illuminated by the new emphasis placed on the brothers’ vocals. It allows the quiet wisdom of the lyrics—what Andy self-deprecatingly calls “generic broad platitudes that I still think resonate when I say them”—to slip in almost unnoticed, delivering their emotional truths while preparing a feather bed for you to collapse into. “All roads will lead to the heart of town, when you’ve been running too long,” he sings in the album’s opening moments. “Being at peace only slows you down, but you’ve been running so long now.”
If Petunia feels like a journey in the direction of peace, that, too, is a reflection of how it was made—the entire thing was written and recorded in Orlando in 2020, rather than pieced together in spurts over the years. This is an album built on level ground that shows what can happen when the artistic environment is stable, even while the world’s environment is anything but. Petunia is not Tonstartssbandht’s definitive statement on these songs, because how could it be? But it is a portrait of Andy and Edwin White at home in Florida, an artfully staged landscape rich in detail, its winding passages and airy environment waiting to be explored.

Lee Fields is arguably the greatest soul singer alive today. In an age when the shelf life of an artist largely depends on posturing and trends, he has proven to be an unassailable force of nature. His prolific, decade-spanning career continues to reign supreme on the modern soul scene.
In early 2022, Lee reunited with Daptone Records and producer Gabriel Roth to record Sentimental Fool, a deep, blues-tinged, wholly-conceived soul album. From his first line to his final plaintive lyric, the beauty, power, and raw humanity of Leeʼs voice is on full display here; the culmination of an astounding career that has seemed to defy gravity, rising to only greater and greater heights.
MARKETING HIGHLIGHTS
• Lee Fieldsʼ Daptone debut album, produced by Gabriel Roth (Thee Sacred Souls, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings)
• Fall/Winter headline tour begins 10.15 and includes NYC, Seattle, LA, Philadelphia, Austin & more.
• Full comprehensive PR (Big Hassle) & Radio (Co-sign) campaigns in the US, as well as EU and UK.
• Official Music Videos for “Sentimental Fool” and “Forever”
• Stripped down performance video for “What Did I Do?”
• BTS video of the alvum recording session
It is our distinct pleasure to present "I Hate I Love You Too Much" b/w "Just Give Me Your Time" - two incredible sides from, the incomparable, the legend, the unequivocal GOAT, Mr. Lee Fields. Drawing from his deep, bluesy roots Lee delivers a vocal workout of soulful excellence unmatched on today's soul scene. From the frantic intro to the grooving pocket "I Hate I Love You Too Much" drops like the very best of early James Brown but delivered with the swagger and cool that only Lee can exude. On the flip is a heavy, heavy ballad that exemplifies what a master at the top of his craft can do. In short...if you consider yourself a fan of soul music, you need this record.
Description / Bio:
The third and most seasoned Drugdealer album, Hiding In Plain Sight , almost didn’t happen at all. Frustrated and insecure with his own singing voice prior to the pandemic, Drugdealer founder and primary songwriter Michael Collins was nearly ready to throw in the towel. Due to a frequent impulse to hand over the microphone to friends and collaborators like Weyes Blood, Jackson MacIntosh, and his trusty musical companion Sasha Winn, Collins became increasingly unsure of himself as a singer.
While attending Mexican Summer’s annual Marfa Myths festival, a chance encounter with artist and composer Annette Peacock changed his outlook. Collins says, “I was so inspired by [Annette]. But similarly to all these other vocalists I’d worked with, I didn’t feel like I had it in me.” he recalls. “I told her my plight, then I played her a song, and she told me I wasn’t singing high enough for my speaking voice. When I returned to LA, I started coming up with new progressions, which I’d modulate up three half steps. It forced me to find a new way to sing.”
“Madison,” is the first song Collins wrote singing in this suggested range. His newfound confidence as a yarn-spinning vocalist in the gruff tenor tradition of Nick Lowe, or even Van Morrison, is readily apparent, with Conor “Catfish” Gallaher ’s pedal steel adding a dusting of cosmic country to Collins’ down-hard love song. When Collins wrote the would-be AM Gold hit, he was summoning an imaginary vision of a love that had eluded him in reality.
Tim Presley sings on the second song, “Baby,” and Collins had a clear role in mind for the California avant-rock mainstay. “I love White Fence so much, but I also wanted to hear Presley sing a song that sounded like an early ‘60s sock hop band who had never tried drugs in their life.” Meanwhile, Kate Bollinger floats an effervescent lead vocal over the Rhodes-driven groove in “Pictures of You.”.
Collins finds love all around and, finally, feels in possession of the voice to sing about it, resulting in the most joyful and fully-realized Drugdealer album to date. Hiding In Plain Sight is the sound of Michael Collins and Drugdealer getting their groove back.

THE
WHITE STORY:
SOUL
WORLDWIDE RELEASE DATE CD/LP: OCTOBER 28, 2022
This compilation pays tribute to the soul music of Boston that was originally captured on tape by legendary Boston record store owner, turned label owner and curator, Skippy White. This release is a labor of love for Eli Paperboy Reed. In addition to being a songwriter and per former, Eli is an avid record collector, especially of obscure R&B, soul and gospel 45s from the early 1960s. Many of the recordings on this compilation are from Eli’s private collection of 45s and acetates.
Extensive liner notes in the package written by Peter Guralnick, Peter Wolf and Eli Paperboy Reed & Noah Schaffer provide the context for the music, the time, and the impact that Skippy White, his stores and the music he discovered and released on his own labels have had on those who frequented his stores, loved the music he released and were influenced by it all. The album includes songs from The Precisions, Earl Lett. Junior Washington and the Lynn Harmonizers among others. It serves as the perfect introduction to the gospel and soul music of Boston from the 1960s.

The Trashmen's defining moment, 1963's "Surfin' Bird," is perhaps the ultimate lightning-in-a-bottle record. Their first true studio recording, it captures the group's interminable energy and mastery of live performance. But it also is the culmination of spirit and experiment that turned it into something new and, from the perspective of 50 years, unique.
This collection shows them to be variously a first-rate surf band, a great protopunk outfit, solid rockers with the raw essence of the earliest originators of the sound, and adept enough to work in some comedy and country. This scope of ability and interest is probably the true basis of the band's following now. But "Surfin' Bird" has more tenacity than other bands' entire better-performing catalogs, and with it, the Trashmen created a work that is arguably today the most relevant release from that storied decade.

TOMMY WOMACK
THIRTY YEARS SHOT TO HELL: A TOMMY WOMACK ANTHOLOGY
DATE
Tommy Womack is as honest as the day is hard, possessed of a Mark Twain-on-Xanax wit, a Bob Dylan sense of absurdity, a Kentucky-bred humility, a short but sweet attention span, and a spirit that endears him to the most talented people in America’s most talented town, Nashville. Like my favorite vinyl record, Tommy’s scratched, worn, and a little warped, and he warms the house with agitated beauty.
We can’t know what it’s like to write songs beloved by John Prine, David Olney, Todd Snider, John Hiatt, Will Kimbrough, Jimmy Buffett, and Jason Ringenberg. We don’t share Tommy’s brilliance and we can’t conjure his bizarro humor. We don’t write the saddest funny songs anyone has ever heard, or the funniest sad songs on the planet.
What makes him unique is what makes him communal. Just like us, he’s a twit and a triumph. He proclaims his inherent and inerrant immortality in “Cockroach After the Bomb” but, in a half-smiling spit, says, “You can’t kill me, I’m already dead.”
He accedes to his limitations in “I’m Never Gonna Be a Rock Star” in envy and grudging acceptance, before offering a chin-to-chest admission, “There, I said it.”
But then he asks, as all of us do and most of us maybe shouldn’t, “Where’s my catharsis?” Give a dog a bone, for Chrissake.
Look up “twit,” and you’ll confirm that it means “a silly or foolish person.” And he is. And we are. Tommy is here to tell us that.
But, on Antonym Day, “twit” means a prescient or brilliant person. And he is. And you are. Tommy’s here to tell us that. And Tommy’s songs explain all of this better than most anything that can be conjured.
Each dawning brings Synonym and Antonym Day. Each morning brings canvasses smudged but malleable. Tommy is here to clean our brushes, to forgive us our trespasses, to celebrate Fish Stick Day, to sing about the regress of progress, and to shed Smokey Robinson’s tears of a clown.
Tommy’s fellow Kentuckian, Tom T. Hall, wrote about “A hairy-legged soul lost out in sin.”
We’re all, regardless of personal grooming habits, hairy-legged souls. For the past thirty years, Tommy Womack has stumbled upon us all out in sin. And he’s offered understanding and clarity, a hug, a nod, a melody, and a goofy-ass smile.
I wouldn’t want to face tomorrow without him. He feels the same about us.

SPACE SUMMIT
LIFE THIS WAY
Space Summit is a collaboration between the omnipresent Marty Willson Piper (ex-the church) and Minneapolitan Jed Bonniwell. Writing the muysic together, Marty handles the luminescent electric guitars and the bass whilst Jed is in charge of lead vocal duties, and lyrics. The music created on Space Summit’s debut album is simultaneously modern and classic dream pop – the subtle shading of dark and light with layered, sonic textures on every track
Conceived in cyberspace, the album is produced by Marty and producer/ engineer Dare Mason who also plays keyboards. Phoebe Tsen sings harmony vocals, Olivia Willson-Piper plays the strings, Eddie John plays the drums and Anekdoten's Nicklas Barker and Sophie Linder play Mellotron. All the usual suspects from Marty’s recent Noctorum and MOAT projects make an appearance. Bringing together musicians from England, the USA, Sweden, and even Borneo where Phoebe lives, is recognition of a new future in music. This album is the first of Marty’s intriguing Sessioneer Series

A very quiet album in loud times
On October 28th 2022, Canadian duo Junior Boys will release their sixth album, ‘Waiting Game’, on City Slang. Six years since their last album, 2016’s ‘Big Black Coat’. ‘Waiting Game’ finds producers Jeremy Greenspan and Matt Didemus in a tender and contemplative mood; a switch-up from their punchy, R&B-infused dance melodics.
The album’s additonal musicians are Canadians, too; Caribou collaborator Colin Fisher performs saxophone throughout and Bonjay frontwoman Alanna Stuart sings alongside Greenspan on the song “Yes 2”. In this, Junior Boys have made an album that reflects the quiet beauty of the world, so long as you’re prepared to truly listen.
Junior Boys will embark on an extensive 20th anniversary headline tour in January and March 2023.

„Junior Boys carry on their love affair with dance music and electronica [...]”
“The power lies in Didemus and Greenspan‘s knack for effusi ve melody and acute dance floor know-how, a potent combi nation that remarkably never becomes formulaic.”
Dug up from the BUFFALO KILLERS’ personal vaults and carefully remastered, this startling collection of rare and previously unreleased material showcases the brilliance of the Ohio trio, and reminds us why they’ve been the favorite band of artists such as The Black Crowes and The Black Keys. Among the stellar material included here are covers of T-Model Ford, Rocking Horse, The Nerves, and Eddie Hinton. “Buffalo Killers’ sound harks back to the late 60s/early 70s when rock bands such as CSN&Y, The Band, Poco and The Rolling Stones were beginning to tinge their rock with a touch of country, but also holds its own melodically against the cream of current col lege rockers.” – Duncan Fletcher

CURRENT RAGE
The missing musical link between Athens and Atlanta.
To celebrate the 40th Anniversary of an out-of-print forgotten classic, Propeller Sound Recordings is set to release a remastered and expanded edition of Current Rage’s sole release, Seven Songs. Fully immersed in the doit-yourself aesthetic of the early-R.E.M. era, Current Rage’s indie record is highly regarded by record collectors seeking early eighties D.I.Y. releases. The relative scarcity of the original EP suggests the item does not circulate on the marketplace very often, making it ripe for reissue and reintroducing the band to a new breed of fans with this remastered and expanded version.
Anthony DeCurtis of Rolling Stone wrote, “an enviable and impressive explosion of new music was emerging from the Atlanta/Athens area at this time.” Current Rage was a part of that scene, drawing inspiration from Talking Heads, Pylon, and R.E.M. while creating a vision all their own.

DANIEL BÉLANGER RETURNS WITH MERCURE EN MAI, AN ALBUM CELEBRATING HUMAN BONDING AND UNEXPECTED JOYS
2021. It’s a cold February morning, during yet another pandemic wave. Daniel Bélanger is wandering the streets of Mile-Ex. Hands in his pockets, head down, he ponders the countless consequences of the current health crisis, including the fact that it’s now impossible to sit down in a café, like he enjoys doing so much.
After stopping by a spot where he’s a regular and ordering a latte togo, he recognizes somebody among a group of people gathered around a public bench. Greetings, introductions, small talk — Daniel Bélanger isn’t aware of it yet, but he’s making real friends, with whom he will get through the next few weeks of lockdown, over warm cups of joe.
The song ‘Soleil levant’ was born from this meeting, “between a café and a good chat,” while “reinventing the world, one end at the time.” In fact, you could say that each of the 10 tracks that make up Mercure en mai come from such happenstance. From thoughtful words to sudden surprises, to these “little Californias” that exist inside of us. The music is alternately sparse and lush, with looping motifs and secret passageways. It’s an impromptu portrait, capturing the things that are unplanned, unreasonable.
Daniel Bélanger’s impeccable productions can make it seem like everything is carefully thought out and structured, but the truth is actually quite different. “Songs come to me,” he says, “and I’m always surprised by where they take me.” The rockabilly Chic de ville (2013), the dreamy Paloma (2016), the cinematic Travelling (2020)… Each of his albums is defined by unrestrained self-expression, as he follows his muse even when he doesn’t entirely understand where it’s heading until years later. Once again, as the days (and the streets) went by, the singer-songwriter found the inspiration for his new songs, which were certainly impacted by the health crisis we went through, as well as the longing for escape it instilled in each of us.
‘Joie’ is about those inner tides, that “liquid diamond” that reaches our heart. ‘Dormir dans l’auto’ celebrates “the end of dormancy and the beginning of hope.” Seizing the moment, getting out in the nick of time, exploring instrumental lands (‘Oh no !!!’, ‘Hiatus’)… Daniel Bélanger’s twelfth LP is one of his more playful and introspective, while also reflecting our collective reality, our desire to fly away, our wanderlust.
A small band, namely Guillaume Doiron (bass) and Robbie Kuster (drums), stopped by Daniel’s studio before Pierre Girard mixed this hypnotic Mercure en mai, which provides us with the breath of fresh air we all needed.

OVERVIEW
In the spring of 2020, Aoife Nessa Frances packed up her things in Dublin and moved to rural County Clare on the west coast of Ireland. It was there, amidst the stillness, that she began to work on the songs that would become her second album, Protector: a personal, mystical journey of self-discovery through dislocation, transformation, and restoration. “I might have been running away from my problems,” she admits. “I was disconnected from myself and from nature, but I found peace far away from the city, where there were no distractions. I isolated myself with nothing to do but make music.”
Recording took place in a small house in County Kerry, at the foothills of the Annascaul, along with Brendan Jenkinson (producer, keys, bass, synth, clarinet) and Brendan Doherty (drums). “We’d wake up early every day and swim at Inch Beach before making music,” Frances describes. “This ritual was crucial for our process. There was an unexplainable joy happening between the three of us.” The arrangements grew with later contributions from Ailbhe Nic Oiroictaigh (strings), Meabh McKenna (harp), and Conor O’Brien (horns). No matter how it expanded in scope and involvement, Frances never let it stray from a central focus on deep truths. “For me, Protector acknowledges the part of myself that steers me towards a brighter path. The almost psychotropic power of nature gave me a connection I never felt before. As the countryside seeped into me and lines of communication opened up with my family, I developed an ability to perceive myself and my choices within an expanded world.”
Protector builds pastoral landscapes through light flourishes and open spaces. Songs float along effortlessly, remaining anchored by Frances’ deep voice. Contemplative tempos tug along atmospheric synths, minimal bass, and shimmering guitar notes, conveying a serenity like early morning. “Writing and recording this album was a spiritual experience,” Frances explains. “I experienced love for my family on a level I didn’t know existed, while slowly putting myself back together and watching the ‘protector’ in me grow much bigger.”
Protector continues to build on Aoife’s critically praised debut Land of No Junction.
“The Irish songwriter’s voice shines like a headlight in fog.”

NO EXPORT TO EUROPE, JAPAN, AUSTRALIA, or NEW ZEALAND. SEND SPIDERS TO ALL OTHER TERRI TORIES EN MASSE!
Since 2014, Wand have made five albums (and an EP) in the studio and a living playing on the road. Business/pleasure: the two sides of their (multiverticed, decagon) coin, flipping in the strobe light of ongoing self actualization. And yet, by doing both at the same time making a record of them playing live they’ve now made their best one yet.
How do you get Spiders In the Rain? Start by going all the way back to January 2020. Do you remember? Wand do. They’d been touring Laughing Matter for ten months. They’d done the coast, spanned the country, crossed the water twice, came back home and kept on going driving, flying, occasionally floating (or maybe just thinking they were?), always on to the next town. They did all kinds of shows clubs, ballrooms, festival gigs with no roof overhead the songs expanding and contracting according to the dimensions of each day. Seventy-nine shows, and everything that was involved the miles that ran beneath them, the different places and people everywhere, the music as it reathed, making everyone change every night alchemized the band, and they drove deeper into their far horizon than they’d ever previously gone.
The essential truth of the live vibe that it’s always better when everybody’s here was clear, so they booked a few shows more in Cali, from L.A. up to Marin. They brought along light and projections from The Mad Alchemist Liquid Light Show and M ike Kreibel and Zac Hernandez too, to tape everything to get the big-deck energy out of performances in S.F. and L.A., but also to draw it out of the margins in Sacramento, Novato and Big Sur. It all happened, too. Everyone brought their experience the kids in the audience and the folks behind the boards, all along with Wand, where it meant something different for everybody in the van:
Sofia: “At the end of 2019, the live show had become our (my) home. It was the most familiar and comfortable place to be after consistent touring for years. An access point into the language we created together, and something that was constantly evolving and refining.”
Lee: “Breakfast in Big Sur, lots of liquid lights, redwoods, a short mossy hike, a dark tunnel and seaspray, friends, my fav Echo shows, Bernie polls, Delany books from City Lights, mounds of elephant seals honking at dusk. God bless Zac and Mike.”
Evan: “Maybe this quiltwork of live recordings reflects a certain screwy, fugitive energy we bring that I think will feel familiar to people who have seen us at shows all these years, and that more or less refuses to be domesticated for posterity in recording studios. These shows were so much fun and so much else loud and living. I hope this record can be a vivid little token of all those buzzing and broken and ecstatic times we shared that lately feel more fleeting, precious and poignant than ever.”
Robbie: “John Cage said that “art and our involvement in it . . . somehow intro duc[ing] us to the very life that we are living . . .” is for an artist the highest goal imaginable. If that’s the case then this record is Wand ’s high water mark. Both because it accurately represents the way I have most often heard Wand ’s music over the past six years (in rooms filled with other people) and because it is a document of the choice I made to seek out a life for myself through music. I’m happy it exists.”
Cory : “The live show has always been a means of cracking open the hi-fi-neu roticism of our studio records; to reach back into the essence of what made the composed music possible to begin with, and tap that essence as the basis for expressive unison improvisation, Spiders in the Rain is a document of our live efforts, and I do believe it is our strongest record until we can produce a studio LP that adequately captures and expands on what is essentially displayed here.”
Packaged sumptuously with artwork from Sam Klickner, Spiders In the Rain is an arc of natural beauty and man-made abstraction inside and out, on an epic scale. Wand are orchestra and machine on Spiders In the Rain, one with the audience, able to get inside any dimension of their sound, whether its songs from their second album or their last one. It almost felt okay that they couldn’t play any more shows immediately after, until it didn’t again. But the change was made: when they started up again doing shows in December of 2021, the energy moved just as fluidly through the room and the band. What will the future of records and shows bring? We can’t wait to find out, one night at a time.
“An inventive, hypnotic spin on Blues, classic R&B, with a twist of Americana”
San Francisco-based band The Lucky Losers, led by veteran artists Cathy Lemons & Phil Berkowitz, return after winning five Independent Blues Awards in 2021.
STANDIN’ PAT, with 11 original tracks, sits like a needle on the groove of something uniquely American. Their signature formula is a mixture of blues, retro soul, and Americana. Lemons’ voice is both gritty and angelic. Berkowitz’s big harp sound is ever-present on this album as he leads the charge and punctuates every line. Their vocal blend is made in harmony heaven and long-time producer Kid Andersen uses it to great effect.
From the quick two step Rich Strike about a nobody horse who won the Kentucky Derby, to a battle cry for American unity in the funky Somewhere in the Middle, to songs that describe Americans on the move, this album addresses the challenges, disappointments, and even the eventual flight of a struggling American psyche.

TVAM returns aboard a Starline tourbus, peeping through the privets and leering over the fences of the rich and famous with a suspicious, cynical eye. High Art Lite is his first long player for Invada Records
TVAM self released his much acclaimed debut Psychic Data in the autumn of 2018, something of a cult classic, the album joined the dots between Suicide’s deconstructed rock ’n’ roll, Boards of Canada’s irresistible nostalgia and My Bloody Valentine’s infinite noise 'Psychic Data' attained KEXP ’Song Of the Day’ whilst signature tune ‘Porsche Majeure’ featured in HBO’s smash hit ‘Succession’.
Featuring 11 brand new tracks inc ‘Double Lucifer’, ‘Piz Buin’ and ‘Semantics’, High Art Lite takes a different tilt to its predecessor by emphasising the immediate and the personal The colours are blown out and the brightness is cranked up. TVAM’s take on such things as role models, fictional movie character tropes, and fables of good and evil, are all tackled with the same suspicious cynicism but this time with an urgent belief in the human condition
A heady mix of Black Mirror’s modern fables, JG Ballard’s gated communities of sun drenched wealth, and Mulholland Drive’s boulevard of broken daydreams, High Art Lite offers an all inclusive package of redemption
Clocking in at just under 40 minutes the pop music sweet spot High Art Lite treads a beguiling line between blissful harmonies, crunching noise pop and childlike innocence . The album is both visceral and melancholic, drifting wonderfully across dream pop, shoegaze and synth pop without ever permanently calling one camp its home

I’ll set the scene we’re all passed out face down in the lawn of the first Bush term, scratching our heads after 9/11 and wondering how much more dystopian it’s about to get. Ash hangs in the air as we march toward endless war, and the activities of the post hippie, post beat, post punk, post jazz, post industrial, post experimental bohemian underground flail against the avalanche with a mystic fire you can’t get your arms around, let alone bottle up for consumption. Jars of tears, rockets from another world. Sunburned Hand of the Man was a part of all that.
Sunburned appeared from time to time (occasionally at my invitation) in Western Massachusetts, a mongrel mob from Beantown, inscrutable in the extreme, their music governed by an internal logic, or by no logic, a bearded octopus with spider legs on stilts moonwalking with a limp. I’d see a set, then listen to a recording of it and swear that it was not the music I had witnessed earlier. As far as I can figure, the music actually had a mind of its own. And yet, in a shockingly conflicting truth, I knew in my heart that the music hadn’t changed I had. These early encounters left me wondering why exactly these people were making this music, and very glad that they were.
They were driven by drums, bass, and guitars, and were obviously in love with groovy riffs, but to call them a rock band seemed even stupider than calling them a jam band. There were hand drums, shruti boxes, and plenty of moaning, but they were far from a hemp bracelet clad circle of evolutionary regressives spouting peace and love bullshit. There were weird electronics and some odd costumes once in a while, but it wasn’t anything resembling conceptual theater made for tight assed, chin stroking academic prudes. They chewed through every leash imaginable, and went bolting off into the wilds of a confounding and glorious wilderness.
Headdress was the group’s first proper vinyl release and, appropriately, clarified absolutely nothing. Now it’s back, nearly old enough to walk into a bar and get toasted on cheap piss, ready to confront and confuse and enrapture and enlighten all over again.
Like Sunburned itself, you catch Headdress already in process. The needle hits the groove and it roars in out of nowhere, an affirmative “OH YEAH” heralding its arrival. The tracks bleed into one another, and the stylistic shifts in the edits can be sudden, but there’s a magic in the editing that mirrors the magic of seeing a live set. It coheres and evaporates at its own pace. Elements emerge, converge, diverge, divulge, and obscure. A riff might erupt, daring the rest of the swarm to hang on it, to join it, or to swirl it. The vocals are summoned sermons, by turns muffled and clear.
The iteration of the band we get here is true old school Sunburned. Over the years an audacious rogue’s gallery of maniacs has passed through the ranks, and it can be easy to lose sight of the fact that at one time there was a relatively tight knit gallery of maniacs fusing together and forging the group’s sound and spirit. Most notable among this crew is the recently departed Marc Orleans, to whom this reissue is dedicated. His bombastically loud, searing guitar leads were a defining feature of this era, and this record presents startling examples of the profound, crazed ecstasy he was capable of conjuring.
This reissue offers a snapshot in time, neon time, mylar time, slipping time, dripping time, stepping hither and yon, feet growing and vanishing like time with each well timed step. Freedom isn’t real, but it’s everywhere, and we’re fools if we don’t try to grasp it during the cosmic windows when it makes itself briefly available.
Now everybody

OK, so basically we just REALLY wanted to be on the “Fields and Streams” compilation - that was our primary motivation for making the tape. It seemed like such an unattainable goal for us kids, stuck in the isolated north of England, a million miles away from the punk-rock promised land that we imagined Olympia to be.
We had a long fascination with Kill Rock Stars due to it’s regional and community based nature - it’s championing of the misfits and it’s iconoclastic manifesto just really spoke to us. That ‘anyone can do it’ ethos inspired us that day to head straight to the only studio we knewthe one at Wakefield College - to make a demo. We had left that venerable institution the year prior under something of a black cloud, so had to book in under a pseudonym - hence “The Cribs” was born.
Listening back, the recordings are pretty wild. We were figuring stuff out as we went along, very much on borrowed time (literally hiding under the board when the security guard was on patrol), with nothing but a bottle of “vodka flavoured spirit drink” (seriously!) to sustain us. By the evening we were done and made our exit through the back window. That chaos is audible in the record…nothing edited out, hearts and influences on sleeve (Incesticide, early Unwound, Urusei)…the sound of kids screaming in suburbia.
In the end, we just didn’t have the confidence to actually send the tape…back in those days it would have involved dubbing cassettes and then finding a post office in Wakefield that offered international shipping etc…too many opportunities for our brutal internal critics to talk us out of it! Ultimately we just figured there was no way such a cool label was gonna be interested in our dumb tape.
We are so proud that, over 20 years down the line, this record finds it’s home on Kill Rock Stars. It was a distant dream for those self-doubting, teenage versions of ourselves - so we know they would be so thrilled with this 7”.
MAJOR PARKINSON
Title: Valesa
Date: 14/10/2022
999 28/10/2022
Major Parkinson announces their long-awaited return with the new album Valesa – Chapter I: Velvet Prison, releasing on CD, vinyl, cassette and all streaming platforms on October 7, 2022. The ever-evolving seven-piece has emerged from the primordial darkness of 2017’s Blackbox, into a neon haze of progressive synthpop/rock. Having chased the ever-elusive Ghost of Pop music from the early days of their eponymous debut album to the present, the band has always thrived within a melodic core – often clad under a shroud of progressive experimentation. On Valesa – Chapter I, the shackles are off, the curtain pulled back, as their compositions extrapolate with new focus and invention. Not necessarily less intricate, but definitely more pop.
The album features 17 meticulously crafted songs that explore new sonic territories, set to the political backdrop of the 1980s as they tap into the Zeitgeist of a period in human history that proved tantamount in shaping our world. From the halls of an abandoned American high school to the wine-stained head of Gorbachev — the album evokes an all-encompassing feeling of uneasy nostalgia, like humanity collectively looking back in time with a pair of cracked, rose-tinted glasses.
“Synth anthems set in a disco of nuclear anxiety.”, says vocalist Jon Ivar Kollbotn. “In this day and age, life is passing before our eyes before we can grasp anything at all, and we become spectators in our own lives. Like confused, geriatric visitors in a wax museum. As time passes by, the past is becoming brighter and nostalgia is growing bigger.”
The instrumentation is powerful and evocative. Guitars swell with subtlety as the bass and drums provide the groundwork for an explosion of synths as keyboardist, Lars Christian Bjørknes, takes center stage to create something wholly unique. Returning female vocalist, Linn Frøkedal, joins with the band’s very own Peri Winkle to complement Jon Ivar Kolbotn’s enraptured vocals and guide us through the brightly coloured maze of Valesa – Chapter I
Weaving between nostalgia and failed revolutions, this album is a completely unique star in the soundtrack of 2022, offering you something that has rarely been done in any field of music.

With or, the band’s second full-length LP, Eyelids has created their most emotional record yet. Produced by Peter Buck of R.E.M. and mixed by Thom Monahan (Peter, Bjorn and John, Devandra Banhart, Fruit Bats), or is liberally sprinkled with the hooks, melodies, and charming wordplay that make a certain kind of rock & roll fan fall madly in love with an LP. It’s all evident in the opening song, “Slow It Goes” — is that a play on Vonnegut or Nick Lowe? Somehow both feel appropriate — the kind of classic easily slotted between Superchunk and the Raspberries on a mixtape, locked and loaded with a perfectly winsome expression of angst: “She says, ‘If I can keep from sighing, why can’t you?’” From there, the sequence dives deeper and deeper into Slusarenko and Moen’s love of underground pop: listen to those sparkling “Starry Eyes”-worthy guitars on “Falling Eyes,” the psychedelic swirl of “My Caved In Mind,” and the Dream Syndicate mysticism of “Tell Me You Know.”
or is the sound of a band realizing its potential, of old friends connecting creatively and sonically, creating exuberant, nuanced, pop music.
AND
EDITION TURQUOISE
The Builders and Butchers combine folksy Americana with a hybrid of Celtic and Southern gothic traditions, creating a sound that doesn’t evoke one specific location as much as a patchwork of long-forgotten places. The guys keep things loose on their third album, Dead Reckoning, whose 12 songs were recorded in a series of live takes with few overdubs. Dead Reckoning is a stripped-down effort, with acoustic instruments taking precedence over their electric counterparts and a sense of raw, off-the-cuff energy reigning supreme. The Builders and the Butchers still brew up an expansive sound on the shanty-esque “It Came From the Sea” and the country-rocking “Black Elevator,” but they also know how to scale things back. “Blood for You” features little more than a cappella vocals and homemade percussion (which sounds like someone banging a 2X4 against the wall), while “All Away” keeps things simple with guitar, mandolin, and light organ. Dead Reckoning is further proof that the Builders and Butchers are building their own identity

Jordan Reyes is one of the busiest musicians in experimental music today, and here he takes a bold turn with the metal-inflected Everything Is Always, touching on death, Zen and science fiction. Reyes’ previous collaborators include ONO, Eli Winter and Robert Stokowy, and here he brings in a large and expert cast: Steve Hauschildt (Emeralds) at the mixing board, and Heba Kadry (Slowdive, Big Thief, Alex G, Lower Dens) mastering, plus instrumentalists including Lia Kohl ( Whitney, Steve Gunn), Jon Mueller ( Volcano Choir, Death Blues), Patrick Shiroishi and Sam Wagster (Fruit Bats, Eli Winter). The result is conceptual yet refined, and distinctively American Dreams.

We Will Live On was made with a Disklavier (an acoustic piano outfitted with solenoids that allowed it to be digitally controlled) and custom made software to sequence it. This made the piano appear to play itself. Technology seemingly embedded with humanity.
Written with the backdrop of news about the worsening climate crisis and pandemic isolation, made themes of legacy, loneliness, helplessness, love and hope emerge. The title, We Will Live On, is meant as a question Will we? And if so, in what way? Will this outlive me? Will technology outlive all of us?
Beauty in the face of fear Art to fill the void The piano playing in an empty room The piano man nowhere to be found Because these patterns are based on geometries and not equal divisions of a measure, they are not metric, like most of western music The result are patterns that have structure and groove, yet sound somehow other Because the sequencer can morph presets, the patterns are malleable between states of order and disarray, which become another compositional aspect to explore.

500 sea green 18o0 colour vinyl this September. “Marrying skeletal balalaika and disembodied samples with low lying synth organ lines and a focal point here Keane’s arresting vocals, it doubles as one of our favourite Irish tracks of the year thus far. ” Swoontide is the distillation of several years of Mary Keane ’s life, recorded on her laptop as and when a new song or idea would come along. Mary talks about her process: “I love to stitch in samples from nature as so many of my songs are inspired in some way by the natural world. I’m also drawn to more domestic sounds like my mother ’s washing machine or water coming to the boil. I play some unusual instruments throughout the album including balalaika, theremin, psaltery and lots of improvised percussion inclu ding bread bins, biscuit tins, stones, and a spiral staircase. ” Try taking a walk in the dark with this album, we dare you.

OVERVIEW
Where I’m Meant To Be is a thumping celebration of life, and an affirming elevation in Ezra Collective’s winding hybrid sound and refined collective character. The songs marry cool confidence with bright energy. Full of call-and-response conversations between their ensemble parts, Where I’m Meant To Be is a natural product of years improvising together on-stage. The album — which also features guest artists Sampa The Great, Kojey Radical, Emile Sande and Nao — will light up sweaty dance floors and soundtrack summer dinners in equal measure.
The group — consisting of Femi Koleoso (who also drums for Gorillaz) as drummer and bandleader, Joe Armon-Jones on keys, James Mollison on saxophone, Ife Ogunjobi on trumpet, and Koleoso’s younger brother TJ on bass guitar — originally came together in 2012 as teenagers at the youth band of Tomorrow’s Warriors, a music education initiative at the South Bank Centre in London. They have since shot forward to become architects of a new phase in their city’s musical journey, a hybrid time in which Black genres — jazz, grime, afrobeat and more — can dovetail and harmonize fluidly, at new, forever rising levels.
The fourteen tracks on Where I’m Meant To Be took eighteen months to record. This gear-shift, far from the mere hours and days spent on all previous releases, not only reflects the impact of lockdown life on artistic creation — it is buoyed by the patience gained from slowing down.

OVERVIEW
‘Heart Under,’ Just Mustard’s second album, asks you to forget what you know. At every turn, this remarkable record reconfigures and stretches the ideas and ambition of a rock band, and turns a year of lockdown and personal struggles into a breathtaking artistic statement.
The music the five friends from Dundalk, Ireland make is strikingly untraditional. Though to look at them, it appears that the band are a five-piece with uniform make-up of a vocalist, two guitarists, a bassist and a drummer, not a single one of them utilizes their instrument in a confined or regular fashion. Guitarists David Noonan and Mete Kalyoncuoglu make their six-strings shriek and wail, the sounds produced sounding like everything from whirring machinery to horror movie monsters. Behind them, drummer Shane Maguire uses the rim of his drums almost as much as the skins, providing a clattering, metallic backbeat. Most of the melodies on offer poke through from Rob Clarke’s inventive, nodding bass lines. Then there’s Katie on vocals; she’s the transfixing focal point of the band.
Across its 10 tracks, the album presents a coherent style and ethos – those scything guitars, Katie’s magical vocals – but still incorporates a wide and untethered vision. There are brooding, atmospheric rock songs and others that apply a lighter, dreamier touch, all tied together with impeccable instrumentation and a united vision. ‘Heart Under’ serves as the next stage of this development, with every instrument brilliantly pushed to its limit and every boundary of the band stretched.

PLANNING
Mount Kimbie (Dom Maker & Kai Campos) present their double album, MK 3.5: Die Cuts | City Planning, highlighting the duo’s individual work and production styles. Die Cuts showcases Dom’s work as a producer; skipping between hip-hop, R&B, and electronic pop, the album combines high class songcraft with a delicate leftfield touch, and featuring a cast of vocalists. Kai’s City Planning twists avant-garde signifiers into a deft and refined state ment with sleek beats and stuttering arpeggios layered with scuzz and personality, making for an album that’s warm and inviting even at its most confrontational. Die Cuts / City Planning shows how Dom and Kai have grown over the past decade, and demonstrates the two sides of Mount Kimbie’s aesthetic coin.

IRIS DEMENT
INFAMOUS ANGEL (30TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION)
CD / LP STREET DATE: NOVEMBER 4, 2022
Iris DeMent released Infamous Angel in 1992. Nearly 30 years later, the album remains among the most singular and fully realized singer-songwriter debuts since the invention of that category in the early ‘70s. The abiding strengths of the album are especially impressive ‘ even a bit startling ‘ because 1992 is not a moment usually associated with her intimate brand of acoustic country music. In country history, the year 1992 is most immediately affil iated with Garth Brooks, whose album, The Chase, topped both the country and pop album charts that year, and with Billy Ray Cyrus’ ‘Achy Breaky Heart,’ which fueled a line dance craze. Squeezed into a playlist alongside such hits, DeMent’s doleful, hushed ‘Our Town’ would’ve sounded as if it were being broadcast from another planet. ‘People call me country,’ she told journalist Ben Thompson while on tour in Britain a couple years later. ‘But country doesn’t call me country.’
Let’s call her country. The genre is always more expansive than what radio stations program. It happened Infamous Angel is close kin to a different sort of country music that was just then having a moment: specifically, country singer-songwriters, focusing on personal, but univer sal, loss and hope and favoring small acoustic combos. It may have been out of step with the mainstream, but Infamous Angel arrived right on time.

NICK LOWE
AT MY AGE (15TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION)
LP STREET DATE: NOVEMBER 4, 2022
There’s a certain winking resignation to the title of Nick Lowe’s At My Age, as if it were designed to be spoken with a soft, knowing sigh. Now in his late fifties, Lowe is hardly running away from his advancing years -- quite the contrary, the singer/songwriter is comfortable in his skin and his years. Certainly, he’s comfortable in his music, since At My Age marks the fourth time that he’s mined the intimate, well-worn country-rock vibe of The Impossible Bird, and if at this point it no longer is a revelation, it’s hardly lost its appeal, either.
Part of that lies in Lowe’s ever-potent charm, and to overlook an album as exquisitely crafted as At My Age is to be a fool, because nobody does this kind of relaxed Americana as well as Lowe, who is still writing songs that stand proudly alongside his previous classics. For instance, there’s “I Trained Her to Love Me,” a song as wickedly witty and bitterly self-loathing as “Cruel to Be Kind” or “The Beast in Me,” a tune that’s balanced by the wry new-love anthem “Hope for Us All,” which has its share of gently funny lines but is nevertheless a ringing, sincere endorsement of love, worthy of the man who wrote “(What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding?” And that’s always been one of Lowe’s greatest gifts, that he is possessed with rare humor but also a big heart, which is what gives his music great resonance.
This 15th anniversary edition of At My Age is pressed on silver vinyl and limited to 2,500 copies world wide. This marks the first time this long-out-of-print classic has ever been available on color vinyl.

For more than four decades, and despite all of the critical acclaim he’s re ceived during that time, Nick Lowe has been making music that flies right under most people’s radar. SAFE TRAVELS (10th Anniversary Edition)
RELEASE DATE: NOVEMBER 4, 2022
As the band’s third studio album, Safe Travels shows a new level of maturity in a musical and lyrical sense from the band’s previous albums. The peppy piano pop songs are balanced with more poignant instrumentation in other tracks that speak to the band’s desire to travel into new sonic territory. Ben Thornewill uses his classical background in writing a number of string arrangements, with the band continuing to explore their own pop-meets-jazz-meets-prog rock backgrounds. The record is co-produced by Dan Romer, Ingrid Michaelson, and Jenny Owens. Since its initial release, the album has sold over 40,000 copies worldwide.
The 10th anniversary limited edition LP is pressed on white multi-color splatter vinyl and includes band classics “Somebody,” “Don’t Let Me Fall Behind,” “Adulthood,” and “The Spiritual”.
“Jukebox the Ghost play rambunctious pop music with the compact melodicism of the Beatles, the ambitious prog sprawl of Yes, and the persistent dance motion of New Order.”

NOVEMBER 4,
Do you prefer your Christmas with “sawdust on the floor and blood in its mouth?” (New Music Express) If so, don’t bother writing to Santa. Sure, he’s a swell guy, but when it comes to “guitars so wild they must have been miked, mixed, and produced in the fiery depths of Hell” (Rolling Stone), St. Nick’s axe-handlin’ chops ain’t what they used to be. But don’t fret, every body’s favorite psychobilly clergyman Reverend Horton Heat has his own bag of treats for all the goodly little kats and kittens! We Three Kings has the holiday licks and tricks you’ve come to expect from the jolly ol’ Rev. as he blazes through 12 classics and an original (“Santa on the Roof”). “It’s nice to hear ‘Jingle Bells’ getting the slapback bass and reverb twang it’s always needed.”—AV Club

THE RUBINOOS THE CBS TAPES
WORLDWIDE RELEASE DATE LP: NOVEMBER 4, 2022
Recorded at CBS Studios in San Francisco in 1976, before they were signed to the legendary Beserkley Records, The CBS Tapes captures the Rubinoos as the scrappy, bratty kids they were. It also shows the huge talent and energy of a young band near the beginning of their career, who believed they were unstoppable. This never before released recording is the perfect way to kick off the band’s 50th anniversary celebration. Songs performed include Jonathan Richman’s “Government Center,” “The Pepsi Generation,” commercial jingle, and several Rubinoos originals.
Yep Roc Records plans to continue celebrating 50 years of the Rubinoos, beyond this amazing artifact of these young punks, with the reissue of the self-titled debut album and their follow-up, From the Drawing Board , over the next 12 months. In addition, the Rubinoos plan to hit the road and play for their fans, as soon as it is safe to do so.
“I met them in a recording studio in Berkeley California in 1974. I was recording for a small record company at their invitation, and Tommy Dunbar, Greg Keranen and Donn Spindt were assigned to be my backing band. Jon Rubin might have also been there as a singer. And boy, were they good. Greg Keranen, the Bass Player, became a lifelong musical partner. I still work with Tommy, and Donno too, from time to time. One time, I walked into one of these bars just as they were starting a set. They started with Curtis Ma yfield‘s “It’s Alright“. Tommy Dunbar started it off on guitar and I can still hear that sound in my head now! Then, in came the drums and bass and they were so relaxed and so solid. This didn’t happen every day! I had seen lots of bands and players 10 years older than these 17-year-olds who could not do that. And then, Jon Rubin started singing, and something else happened: Melody! I mean, the lad could really sing!
Then… The other three came in with their singing parts and you learned they all could sing.”—Jonathan Richman “I probably saw the Rubinoos like 20 times in high school. Although I’m not a power pop bubblegum nerd or whatever, I loved how they were true to their school. Be it Spaghetti Western soundtrack music or the Archies, The Beach Boys, The DeFranco Family, or the Jackson 5, they knew what they loved. And wore it on their sleeves. Rubinoos AF.”

SOHN TRUST
Four years after his last original music, English singer, songwriter and producer SOHN will return with his new record ‘Trust’. Off the back of an incredible history at DSPs with over 100 million streams, the album finds him further exploring a sound that first found success in the electronic and noir-pop spaces, and now explores deeper roots in folk structures and an aching, emotive balladry. Whilst still drawing on the influences that garnered such a rabid international audience, the album is an unequivocal statement of SOHN as an ambitious auteur beyond simple genre tags.
Late night TV, radio support and global sell-out tours coloured the previous two album cycles, but SOHN’s third studio album came from a massive shift in his perception and direction. Having spent five years writing, recording and toiling on a record that he no longer loved, he decided to start anew, from scratch. Missing community and friendship in life and the creative process, he realised he could no longer work alone as on previous albums – and took a leap of faith in starting to practise the giving and taking of trust with creative collaborators. The resulting record is the sound of SOHN realising who he is, and that he’s already home.
With a global tour on the horizon, including London’s iconic Roundhouse, and extensive promo and marketing campaigns promised, it feels like a vital new phase in SOHN’s development as a career musician. Ten years after first rising to prominence with viral hit ‘The Wheel’, ‘Trust’ represents an important step in further finding his true artistic voice and stepping out of his comfort zone.

“‘(Herman’s) House’ is a dance-punk masterclass, flourishing in the space between melody and dissonance without sacrificing the all-important groove” - Rolling Stone
“Mixing art-punk, industrial, and techno, the out standing New Orleans four-piece emerge with a blistering vision of punk as possibility.” - Pitchfork
Full US tour starting in Fall 2022 and thoughout 2023
Brought together by New Orleans’ DIY scene, Special Interest is, on every level, uncompromising: in their adventurous sound, their high-energy live performances, and their convictions. Dance music and punk culture have flirted in the warehouse before, but the desire of Special Interest is to dismantle genre. 2018’s Spiraling and 2020’s widely acclaimed The Passion Of articulated the group’s style, driven by dance grooves and electronic textures as much as hardcore riffs, but Special Interest expands the vision with Endure, their latest al bum and first for Rough Trade.
Cherry Blue Intention (Herman’s)
Legend
Informed not just by the bleakness of the pandemic, but the tremendous energy and righteous anger of the summer 2020 uprisings. En dure sets the intensity of that moment — from the gnawing despair of isolation to the euphoria of human contact and connection — to a driving dancefloor rhythm on No Wave-inflected tracks like “Foul” and “Love Scene.” “Cherry Blue Intention” brings together a sturdy post-punk bassline, shrieking guitar effects, and a jungle breakbeat into a driving anthem of an opening track.
New songs like “(Herman’s) House” recall the art rock of Sparks and The B-52s as much as politically-minded punk, and on “Midnight Legend,” the group is more overtly pop than ever before — making something fun during a time of frequent sadness became a central priority. The group directly addresses the issues that surround them, like gentrification and the impending climate apocalypse. There’s a universal resonance to songs like “Concerning Peace,” which takes its hook from a sample of Frantz Fanon, but Special Interest’s music isn’t just a call to action. Biting humor and irreverence intermingle with harsh edges of noise, and there’s always room to dance and sweat.

• DEBUT ALBUM FOR KILL ROCK STARS
• INDIE EXCLUSIVE “BLUE SEAFOAM WAVE” VINYL
Formed in the heart of London’s DIY punk scene, Big Joanie (featuring guitarist Stephanie Phillips, bassist Estella Adeyeri, and drummer Chardine Taylor-Stone) are a Black feminist punk band whose passionate live shows and moreish blend of nineties riot grrrl and synth-heavy post punk, have seen them steadily rise to become one of the most championed bands of the current era.
Back Home is a dramatic leap forward for the band; the band build on their tightly knit, lo-fi punk formula to bring forth a collage of blazing guitars, down tempo dance punk, and melancholic strings that evoke the full depth of the band’s expansive art punk vision.
The album’s strength lies in the band’s bold and varied new sound. Album opener ‘Cactus Tree’ is an eerie, gothic folk tale that tells the story of a woman waiting for her lover while a wall of euphoric harmonies and screaming feedback roll in the background. Lead single ‘Happier Still’ is a driving, Nirvana-influenced track that grapples with the idea of wanting to push through a depressive episode. Inspired equally by the melodic rock of Hüsker Dü and the mystical sensibilities of Stevie Nicks, closer ‘Sainted’ brings the club-ready sentiment of the 2018 single ‘Fall Asleep’ to its natural conclusion.
Despite Big Joanie’s many accomplishments, there is so much more the band want to achieve and Back Home looks set to be the breeding ground for a new era of Big Joanie. With their boundary-breaking approach to punk, radical politics, and an appreciation for earworm melodies, Big Joanie are set to become important voices for a new generation of punks.
“The new Big Joanie record is constantly inventive, self assured, hook filled, elemental, and beautiful in a punk way.” – Andy Bell, Ride “Melody tinged with haunting, the perfect blend of guttural and otherworldly.”
– Carrie Brownstein, Sleater-Kinney
“With excellent tracks like ‘In My Arms’, ‘Confident Man’ and ‘Your Words’, this album should finally put Big Joanie on the top where they belong! Love it” – Skin, Skunk Anansie

Soul Jazz Records Presents DISCO REGGAE ROCKERS
4th November 2022
Disco Reggae Rockers features wicked reggae disco versions of funk, soul and disco classics! This new album follows on from Soul Jazz Records' earlier highly successful 'Hustle: Disco Reggae' and features reggae covers of classic songs by Earth, Wind and Fire, Michael Jackson, The Isley Brothers, Candi Staton, Curtis Mayfield and more as performed by Derrick Harriott, Devon Russell, Hortense Ellis, Glen Adams, Dave Barker and others.
The lineages of American soul and disco music on the one hand and Jamaican reggae on the other are so intertwined that its unsurprising that disco reggae or reggae disco if you prefer is such a winning and straightforward combination. American and Jama ican music has been influencing each other back and forth for many decades, and is one reason that the music of Diana Ross, Curtis Mayfield, the Isley Brothers and numerous other US soul artists is so widely appreciated in Jamaica.
American black music first impacted on Jamaica in the late 1950s when Clement ‘Sir Coxsone’ Dodd and a generation of young sound system operators first scoured North America in search of obscure jazz and rhythm & blues 45s to play back home in Kingston dancehalls. This led to the emergence of ska, when Jamaican musicians created their own musical style that blended American jazz and rhythm & blues with Caribbean calypso and Jamaican mento music. This fusing continued into the 1960s as US soul music became the foundation of JA rocksteady.
But the lesser known story is how this influence continued throughout the 1970s and 80s. And as Jamaicans started to migrate across the world, especially to the major cities of New York, London and Toronto, new micro pockets of Jamaican culture laid seed to even more fertile new styles as first and second generation Jamaican émigrés grew up influenced by both their original and that of their adopted cultures. Importantly for the UK, this gave rise to lovers rock (a combination of reggae and soul music). It also later laid the foundations for the emergence of hip hop in the US, created by émigré Jamaican and Caribbean producers and DJs: these include Kool Herc (Jamaican), Grandmaster Flash (Barbadian) and Afrika Bambaataa (Jamaican & Barbadian parents).
Through these migrations a musical triangle was created between America, Jamaica and the UK, leading to some of the most brilliant musical cross pollinations in the music of all three countries. The most straightforward definition of ‘Disco Reggae’ is to describe it as American disco and soul songs covered by reggae artists. But the relationship is binary this is no mere subservient island appreciation of North American dominant culture but instead an example of the interweaving thread of Jamaican and American music that travels back and forth between the major cities of Kingston, London, Toronto, New York, Chicago and Philadelphia.
Having said that all of the songs featured here are indeed cover versions of (or at least heavi ly based on) US soul and disco tunes. Curtis Mayfield, Diana Ross, Earth, Wind & Fire, Archie Bell, The Dramatics, Michael Jackson the work of these artists resonated around the world and Jamaica was no exception. Of these figures Curtis Mayfield was of course already an iconic artist on the island, due to the influence that his vocal group The Impressions had on Jamaican rocksteady back in the 1960s.
This album is released in three formats: Special one off + limited edition Sun Yellow coloured vinyl gatefold double LP + download, black vinyl double LP + download, and CD + booklet edition, all with full sleevenotes included.

PUNK 45: I’M A MESS!
I Y Or Die! Art, Trash & Neon Punk 45s In The UK 1977 78
14th October 2022
Initially released in a deluxe vinyl only edition (totally sold out), Soul Jazz Records' 'PUNK 45: I’m A Mess' is now being released in standard double album vinyl (and for the first time on CD).
Soul Jazz Records’ long lasting Punk 45 series are high quality editions of early punk 45s. While previous editions have focused on the early days of punk in Los Angeles, Cleveland, Akron, France, and proto punk, this new edition focuses on mainly do it yourself, or self released 45s, all made in the UK in the early days of punk.
While only a handful of Punk 45s were released in 1976, the following two years produced an avalanche of them. Aside from the few punk bands who signed to major labels, many of these singles were self released private press 45s or independent label 45s. With limited distribution and access to the media, many of these sunk without trace and were lost in history. This album features many of these independent punk 45 gems, lost nuggets of gold from the sea of time!
The bands featured here come from all across the United Kingdom. Here you will find The Drive, Scotland’s answer to the New York Dolls, Dansette Damage from Newcastle, Stormtrooper from the Isle of Wight and many more a snapshot of some of the finest private press 45s ever made. Other bands include Cybermen, The Exile, Neon as well as the early punk incarnations Johnny and The Self Abusers (who later became Simple Minds) and The Killjoys (led by Kevin Rowland who later formed Dexy’s Midnight Runners).
These are all one off and super rare releases from bands that you have probably never heard of totally hidden gems from the wastelands of the early days of punk! Totally in keeping with the spirit of the time, this is high octane, righteously independent DIY or die!

The debut album by the Pyramids was inspired by the group's visit to the Lalibela monastery in Egypt, and was recorded in Yellow Springs Ohio in early 1973
Drawing on the teachings of Cecil Taylor and the influence of John Coltrane, combined with a barrage of intense percussion, the album evolves over several long form pieces, Initially only 500 copies were pressed and sold to friends and followers in the local area.

Birth/Speed/Merging was recorded in 1976 after the band's move to San Francisco. The album closes the Pyramids' 70s trilogy and makes more use of studio technology: adding overdubs and other effects, a marked departure from the previous two releases, though at no cost to the urgent message and energy of their earlier works

“The greatest trio on Earth.” -Noisey
“the nonstop time-signature shifts and torrid playing that animate their tricky pop is the work of a band in its own lane.”
-Rolling Stone
“Call it math-pop, technical sugar-pop, J-punk, jazzy post-rock — whatever it is, the Kyoto-based Tricot makes sophisticated music that's as sweet and bubbly as soda.”
-NPR
“tricot’s music is characterised by the frenetic math rock rhythms that underpin Ikkyu’s vocals, which flip from sprightly to a sprawling rage on a knife’s edge. Fans of Battles, Speedy Ortiz, Zach Hill’s pre-Death Grips band Hella, and proto-emos Don Caballero should find plenty to like here.” -NME
Started in 2010, tricot have developed a unique sound that utilizes captivating guitar interplay and stop-and-start percussion over complex polyrhythms while harnessing the emotional vocals of singer Ikkyu Nakajima. The end result is somehow neatly packaged and delivered as dense, and invigorating pop songs.

Zenizen - P.O.C (Proof of Concept)
Info:
“This record is a representation of everything that has led me to this point It’s been a long, bizarre path,” says Zenizen’s Opal Hoyt of both her life and her journey to make this record Like Peter and the Wolf, the Russian symphony Hoyt used as a creative framework, P O C (Proof of Concept) is a series of vignettes the collection of which mirrors Hoyt’s long journey, from her adoption in Alaska to her many moves between DC, Jamaica, Vermont, and New York
Along this unconventional path, Hoyt met the talented cast of musicians who would go on support her in the recording of P O C: variegated bass by Jonathan Maron (Erykah Badu,D’Angelo); drums by Vishal Nayak (Nick Hakim, Empress Of); moments of magic on horns by Sly 5th Ave (Prince); guitars by Benamin (IGBO); intricate mixing by Nick Herrera (Hiatus Kaiyote), Benamin, and Jon Bap; with mastering by Heba Kadry and Davy Levitan Then there’s Hoyt herself, whose rich alto pierces through with poetic lyricism, supported by her contributions of Rhodes, synths, and sample arrangements (think: babbling brooks and birdsong) In other words, Hoyt isn’t just a songwriter in the classic sense She’s also a skilled producer with an ear for excellent arrangements the kind of musician who enjoys meandering and allowing her artistic vision to percolate Likewise, P O C is a record that blooms in beauty over time the kind of record that you can take anywhere in any season, as any version of yourself

SHIHO YABUKI
The Body Is A Message of the Universe からだは宇宙のメッセージ
Originally created and released in a small edition in Japan back in 1987 by the mysterious musician/magician Shiho.
The Body Is A Message Of The Universe features floating shimmering synthesizer textures. It’s unique and extra ordinarily serene with shi fting tone colors and spatial textures bringing the listener to a special magic place. It’s as beautiful as it’s captivating. There’s also a haunting edge to parts of the album sounding like what could originally have influenced David Lynch and Angelo Badalamenti when they composed the soundtrack to the original Twin Peaks series.
This release also features a couple of special tracks originally composed and recorded by Shiho in the late 1980s for the Japanese Kanebo Beauty Research Laboratory.
Part of the album also saw a limited US CD release in the late 1980s which is hard to come by today. Although Shiho Yabuki continued her career in Japan, both as a musician and magician and became a pioneer of healing music in Asia, for most western listeners it was like Shiho was one of those mysterious artists who puts out an album and then is never heard from again. This is unfortunate, and something Subliminal Sounds hope to rectify.
“Creativity is the unfolding of the unknown realms within the self. Through our chosen ways of expression, each of us is daily creating a unique universe, a unique environment. The universe created by each and every being in endless repetition are messages of the universe. The breath of this music, expressed from my prese nt environment, flowing through a myriad of places as environmental music is my expression of The Body Is A Message Of The Universe. ”

Jon Neufeld and Martha Scanlan's unique alchemy on stage started when they first played together at Portland's Indie-roots festival Pickathon ten years ago. It was an immediate musical connection and friendship that has only deepened with time and miles spent touring venues and festivals across the country.
While their collective accolades are impressive- they have shared the stage and collaborated with artists as diverse as Levon Helm, Jim James, Emmy Lou Harris and Peter Buck, and played festivals from Merlefest to Bonnaroo – it is that unique alchemy, that sense of adventure and improvisation on stage and in the studio, that most characterizes their work together and what has earned them a loyal following world wide.
When so much began to shift and live shows ground to a halt, what began as a loose plan to work on a new record seemed to become a musical journey of it’s own, a necessary sort of refuge. They began passing songs and music back and forth from their respective studios; Martha in Western Montana and Jon in Portland Oregon, often in the early hours before the world was awake, often waiting to listen to the track until tape was rolling, almost as though the improvisational live interaction onstage was occurring over time and space, in slow motion. The result is a continuing collaborative project in motion, an unfolding story. The first installation, Last Stars First Light, is due out autumn 2022 on Jealous Butcher Records
Jon Neufeld lives in Portland, Oregon and plays with a variety of musicians there including longtime bands Jackstraw (bluegrass) and The Kung Pow Chickens (Gypsie jazz). Well known for his innovative guitar playing, he is also a multi-intrumentalist, producer and mastering engineer. He has appeared on The Tonight Show and NPR's Tiny Desk Concert with his former band Black Prairie and toured Europe in an impossibly small rental car with famed Portland Indie band Dolorean. He recently co-produced and engineered Smithsonian Folkways Roll Columbia: Woody Guthrie's 26 Northwest Songs
Martha Scanlan is an award winning songwriter based in western Montana. Her writing comes out of some of the deepest roots of Americana, winding between the mountains of East Tennessee and some of Montana's most remote landscapes including a 120 year old cattle ranch where she spent years living and working. She appeared on T-Bone Burnette's Cold Mountain soundtrack with former bandmates Reeltime Travelers. Her songs have been covered by Sarah Jarosz, Andrew Marlin, Amy Helm and Solas and have found their way into books by celebrated American authors Rick Bass and Joyce Carol Oates

One of the most distinctive recordings of the early 2000s, Jon Brion’s one and only solo album Meaningless is a master course in power pop-inspired art rock songwriting and production. Uniting psychedelic rock, classic songwriters, tape loop soundscapes, and chiming folk jangle, the record offers a vivid backdrop for Brion’s wry observations on love, reality, and the elusive quality of meaning—all that plus a mind-bending Cheap Trick cover. Largely self-recorded in the late ‘90s (minus some sessions with Ethan Johns), Meaningless spent years on the shelf of a major label uncertain what to make of its textured glory, before Brion negotiated an extremely limited self-release in 2001. More than two decades later, its emotional core remains undiminished by year’s spent in the major label wringer, both before and after its creation. Like his work with artists including Aimee Mann, Fiona Apple, and Elliott Smith, Brion’s songs offer depth and resonance, and like his soundtrack work on films like Lady Bird, Step Brothers, Punch Drunk Love, I Heart Huckabees, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, its scope is widescreen.
Remastered and artist approved, Meaningless can finally be heard the way Brion intended.

HANS PUCKET
NO DRAMA
Wellington, New Zealand four-piece Hans Pucket writes nervy but effortlessly danceable rock songs about feeling bad. Their second full-length album, No Drama, which is out November 4th via Carpark Records, gleefully captures the all-too-common twenty-something anxieties of talking too much and then being unable to find the right words to say. When frontman Oliver Devlin sings, “I’m surfing a constant wave of alarm” on the title track, it’s a compass for the other nine tracks. This is inviting and relatable music for people who, despite their best efforts, feel uncomfortable about themselves, the state of the world, and their place in it.
Both lyrically and sonically, No Drama is a departure for Hans Pucket from their 2018 debut Eczema. “I realized I didn’t want to write any more real heartbreak songs,” says Oliver Devlin. “We were and still are a live band. We’re still trying to make music that’s catchy and people can dance to, but also really interesting to us: songs about growing up and finding how you exist in the world.” Songs like “My Brain Is a Vacant Space” with its blistering guitars and ebullient hooks hone in on the feeling that you have nothing to offer while “Bankrupt,” a fuzzed-out punk track, boasts lines like “I don’t know if I’ll always feel like / I don’t know what I’m doing wrong.”
Recorded with the band’s good friend and former tour mate Jonathan Pearce of The Beths at his Auckland studio, No Drama is full of big leaps, immaculate arrangements, and a ton of immediate grooves. “We were very ambitious when we first started recording this,” says bassist Callum Devlin. “Intentionally we left heaps of space in the track so we could add strings and horns. Because we were very measured and quite deliberate with the parts we had. It was a really fun process filling in the gaps.”
No Drama came together over several years and during its creation, the band added multiinstrumentalist Callum Passels, who provided all the horn arrangements on the LP. With Pearce producing, his other Beths bandmates like Benjamin Sinclair added string arrangements while singer Elizabeth Stokes provided backing vocals.
Overall it’s a remarkably eclectic record where the smooth pop of a track like “Kiss the Moon” can coexist perfectly with the Abbey Road freakout of “Some Good News.” “We didn’t want to be afraid of our 15-year-old self’s influences,” says Oliver Devlin.” We really wanted to make an album that teenage us would just be amazed by.”
The result is Hans Pucket’s most sparkling and confident collection yet. While it’s danceable and fun, it’s also a thoughtful exploration of anxiety, a call for empathy in a turbulent time, and a relatable reminder that it’s hard to figure things out.

Built to Spill Beirut
Critically acclaimed singer Lucia Cadotsch is one of the most recognized voices in European jazz. Her pure timbre and careful phrasing imbues every lyric she sings with warmth and emotional clarity. Wanja Slavin is a saxophonist, composer, and producer. His kinetic, rhythmic phrases, and adventurous melodicism as a composer and saxophonist has gained him international recognition as a bandleader and collaborator.
Together, Cadotsch and Slavin form the core of “LIUN + The Science Fiction Orchestra”, a multi-headed musical hydra that presents a clever reversal of modern remix culture, where digitally produced music is remixed by other electronic musicians. Lily of the Nile makes a compelling case for work ing in the other direction, taking the digitally produced songs of their debut and reinterpreting them with acoustic instru ments, in the process, reinventing what is possible for a vocal jazz ensemble to look like in the modern age.
Cadotsch and Slavin are close friends who have known each other for years, and unlike many of their contemporaries working in modern jazz ensembles, they often write togeth er in the same room, in Slavin’s home studio in the woods outside Berlin. This creative intimacy propels their music to staggering heights, and the musical chemistry between these two gifted musicians is clear. Lily of the Nile is a triumph of an album, and an evocative statement on how to think like a jazz musician in the 21st century.

DATURA4 “Neanderthal Jam”
On their latest album “Neanderthal Jam”, Datura4 stalk a darker, dirtier species of psychedelic boogie than their fellow cool West Australia types (Tame Impala, Pond).
“The Western Australian natives always mind their trad rock and blues roots with a modern heft and sensibility when it comes to stone grooves and spaced licks”.
RADIO MOSCOW’S most loved second studio album . “Radio Moscow does for Blue Cheer what the Black Keys do for 21st century blues: stomps it.” – Raoul Hernandez / AUSTIN CHRONICLE (2010)
EXPERIMENTS IN PLANT BASED MUSIC VOL. 1
Plant-based pop exploration inspired by Mort Garson’s cult 1970s synth oddity “Plantasia.” Mixed by John McEntire (Tortoise, The Sea & Cake).
Portland resident Dana Buoy recorded this album over the course of 2020-2021 with contributions from former Akron/Family bandmates Seth Olinsky and Miles Seaton. Kelly Pratt, arranged and played the cataracts and cascades of horns, adding Dana Buoy to arésumé that includes relationships with Beirut, Fa ther John Misty, and The War on Drugs. John McEntire, of Tortoise and some thing of a hero for Janssen, offered a crucial assist in mixing it. Dana’s pop and r&b structures crash with his Brooklyn avant garde roots with an explosion of color and life. Play it inside and watch your plants thrive.

Davis Causey is an Athens-bred musician who has had a 60-year long career so far that has taken him every where from playing with Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson to writing music for Bonnie Raitt and the “Carny” movie soundtrack. Davis’s first release on Strolling Bones Records is Pickin’ on Christmas and includes a beautiful collection of instrumental Christmas classics and one original produced by Davis and Jay Smith and features musicians Jay Smith, Randall Bramblett, and Jeff Reilly. “This project came about in 1998 as a limited run of 100 CDs to be given as Christmas presents from Jay and myself to friends, relatives, etc. It was so special to me to collaborate with Jay on this project. He was one of the nicest and most talented musicians I’ve had the privilege of playing with!
Unfortunately, Jay passed soon after we finished recording Pickin’ On Christmas. I’m so thankful we have these recordings to keep his spirit and great playing alive for others to appreciate and enjoy! So with great love and af fection, I dedicate this recording to Jay - love you brother.” Pickin ‘on Christmas is set for release on November 4, 2022 via Strolling Bones Records.

Planet Mu owner Mike Paradinas (a.k.a. µ-Ziq) wraps up 2022 with his 3rd release of new material this year.
‘Hello’ is the mirror image of the ‘Goodbye EP’. The intensity is heightened, the breaks more manic and melodies inhabit every corner. The material is the final chapter of the ‘Magic Pony Ride’ material and even includes another version of the track. I’ggy’s Song’ has a slowed down sample of Mike’s son screaming, ‘Ávila’ is an ode to his father’s hometown in Spain and ‘Green Chaos’ even includes a nod to RP Boo.
On Side B things get more interesting. ‘Pyramidal Mind Dispersion’ slows things down while amping up the tension, Modulating Angel is at drum & bass tempo but with a choir of angels from hell in the background, while the final two tracks recall the experimentation and melodies of Lunatic Harness.

We are excited to reissue Kuedo's classic 2011 album 'Severant' on double vinyl for the first time, and with a bonus track 'Work, Live & Sleep In Collapsing Space'. The cover artwork has been redesigned by Raf Rennie (Who also designed Kuedo's recent album on Brainfeeder, Infinite Window).
In terms of feeling, ‘Severant’ explores the space between the detached world of the imagination and the real-time world; that feeling of coming out of a daydream, on the edge of the drift from the day-to-day grind. Jamie says of this moment ”As reality shapes imagination and escapism affects your choices in the real world, there is a strange relational loop between the two and the space in between the two. There’s a bitter sweetness in that gap, it has a certain emotive quality, kind of in between being and non-being”.
Again, musically ‘Severant’ is inspired by related themes. It sounds as if it’s in a sweet spot between the emotive, innately futurist synth soundtracks of Tangerine Dream and Vangelis, borne from a time when the very idea of futurism was more prevalent, in combination with musical ideas and inspiration from the emotionally ambivalent, materialist fantasies of ‘coke rap‘ such as The Clipse. Rhythmically the record is influenced by what Jamie calls ”the two ultra modern musics of modern times”, footwork from Chicago, which Planet Mu has explored in depth on its recent releases, and again the drum machine grids of coke rap. Jamie says ”I wanted to capture a really futurist sentiment, kind of melancholy and grand luminescent, so I used the instrument that most evokes that for me - that sweeping Vangelis brass sound.” And on coke rap he talks about the emotional ‘half being’ of the music, the energetically charged, detached ambivalence of the MCs, and the admission that the MCs could be ”fantasising without admitting to doing so.”
Artist: COH meets Abul Mogard
Title: COH meets Abul Mogard
Release date: 04th November 2022
Fabled electronic music visionaries CoH & Abul Mogard form a supranatural alchemy of discrete analogue material and digital energies in their extraordinary debut for Houndstooth.
Stemming from a chance meeting at festival in 2019, CoH & Abul Mogard’s maiden collaboration focusses stunning new perspectives on the artist’s respective, fiercely singular and widely adored bodies of work. Ivan Pavlov’s CoH, deeply respected for intensely curious original solo work, and in SoiSong with Psychic TV/Coil’s Peter Christophersen, here renders a vital, grayscale fluorescence from Guido Zen’s lushly romantic Buchla 200 and Serge Modular scapes, painted to tape between Stockholm’s EMS studio and at home, under his Abul Mogard nom de synth.
You read that correctly this is the first Abul Mogard release to be disclosed as the work of Italian artist Guido Zen; the late ‘90s electronica pioneer known for work with Gamers In Exile and Goodiepal at turn of the millennium, and more recently in kosmiche unit Brain Machine, plus its parallel club project Vactrol Park, and in trio with NWW dynamo Colin Potter and Alessio Natalizia (Not Waving).
As such ‘CoH Meets Abul Mogard’ drops the veil of fictional pret ence after a decade of speculation, only to reveal Mogard’s music at its most metaphysically powerful, its allusive majesty heightened and reified by CoH’s computer based sorcery and allegorically encrypted in the hand drawn peculiarity of the album artwor k, licensed from Nick Blinko (owner of Outer Himalayan Records and co founder of legendary deathrock catalysts, Rudimentary Peni).

WHAT
DO FOR OTHERS
Release Date: November 4th, 2022
“What We Do For Others” is the third studio album by the Austrian producer and synthesizer savant Dorian Concept, famed for his singular, beautifully detailed sonic tapestries and wild, utterly joyful live keyboard jam videos. It’s a relaxed, quietly confident and intimate record, founded on delightfully loose arrangements, feedbacked soundscapes and blessed with snatches of cryptic vocals that are presented more as additional instrumentation rather than lyrical phrases. All the elements and layers were recorded without interruptions and deliberately not edited. “I think that's why parts of it really sound live-bandish,” says Oliver. “It's me playing keys, singing and using fx-units to create these freeform compositions.”
Based in Vienna, Johnson has been a stalwart of the experimental jazz/electronic scene that has flourished and diversified in the orbit of Flying Lotus and his Brainfeeder label. With early releases on Kindred Spirits imprint Nod Navigators and Affine, Johnson played Brainfeeder’s earliest international label nights in 2009 forming a strong family bond with the Brainfeeder crew. Oliver contributed production to Thundercat’s “The Golden Age of Apocalypse”, played keys on Flying Lotus’s seminal album “Cosmogramma” and has toured in the live bands of both FlyLo and The Cinematic Orchestra. He also contributed keys on MF DOOM's "lunchbreak" which was produced by Mssrs. Ellison and Bruner. Most recently he collaborated with another don of future-facing electronics – Mark Pritchard – to compose music for Damien Jalet's contemporary dance performance "Kites" at the Gotheborg Operan and worked with one of the world’s leading ensembles for contemporary music – Klangforum Wien – composing and performing a piece called “Hyperopia” at TRANSART Festival 2020 in Austria.

Marvin Tate’s D-Settlement were Chicago’s bestkept secret: a trailblazing, diverse band mixing R&B, soul, punk and funk with biting wit and political commentary. Led by Marvin Tate —a poet, artist, playwright and raconteur who wore pipe cleaners in his hair—and backed up by a dynamic cast of characters, their concerts were the stuff of legend. They stole the show from acts like Antibalas and Bernie Worrell. They addressed transgender rights, gentrification and gun violence before they were trendy. But if you wanted to hear their music, you were out of luck. Until now. American Dreams Records presents Marvin Tate’s D-Settlement: a deluxe 4xLP/3xCD box set, designed by Field of Grass (Numero Group, Paradise of Bachelors), collecting their three albums with an oral history book of the band. The Watersons
Frost & Fire
A Calendar Of Ritual And Magical Songs
45rpm re-pressing of classic Topic Records album unavailable on vinyl since 1967
“Ground zero for anyone discovering English folk song and culture” Tradfolk
“These are vital, transcendent recordings. Essential listening” Living Tradition
Originally released on Topic in 1965, ‘Frost And Fire : A Calendar Of Ritual And Magical Songs’ was the debut album by The Watersons, a fledgling folk group from Hull, Yorkshire. Comprised of Norma, Mike, and Lal (Elaine) Waterson, with their cousin John Harrison, they performed mainly traditional songs with little or no accompaniment, their distinctive sound emanating entirely from their closely woven harmonies. Recorded by Bill Leader in the back room of his Camden Town flat and produced by Tony Engle, ‘Frost And Fire’ became Melody Maker magazine’s Album O f The Year (a rarity for a debut album). It’s since gone on to be a staple of every folk collection worth its salt and inspired generations of close harmony singers.
Now re released in the original sleeve (with minor adaptions for 2022) and featuring A.L. Lloyd’s extensive track by track sleeve notes, this new vinyl pressing has been cut at 45rpm for optimal sound quality.
“First hearing the Watersons live was a shock, a revelation. Their voices and their musicality were unique. Raw, passionate and brilliant, and so were they. Their musical instincts were perfect and they redefined the possibilities of the British folk scene, they had somehow opened a door wide and it's still open. Home grown, international, and pure magic.”

Angeline Morrison
The Sorrow Songs (Folk Songs Of Black British Experience)
Acclaimed Christian Raphael Prize winner’s debut for Topic Records, produced by Eliza Carthy
“Abundant with meaning and feeling … masters the precision of storytelling as well as its poetry” The Guardian “Remember her name” The Arts Desk
The Sorrow Songs: Folk Songs of Black British Experience is the upcoming record by Cornwall based folk singer, songwriter and multi instrumentalist Angeline Morrison, her debut for on the historic Topic Records label. Produced by Eliza Carthy and featuring some of her beautiful, soaring string arrangements, The Sorrow Songs was recorded in Cornwall at Cube Studios and is a work of what Angeline calls ‘re storying ’
Angeline Morrison began to wonder if she could discover more about the lives of these ordinary and extraordinary Black ancestors, and create an album of songs in the sonic style of UK folk and traditional music, in the hope that this silent space could then begin to be filled with stories. With the help of Arts Council National Lottery funding, Angeline began what became a year of research into this neglected area of Black British history. The Sorrow Songs: Folk Songs of Black British Experience is the result.
The stellar line up of musicians on this album includes Cohen Braithwaite Kilcoyne (anglo concertina, melodeon, vocals), Clarke Camilleri (guitar, banjo, vocals), Hamilton Gross (violin, vocals), Rosie Crow (piano, vocals), Alex Neilson (drums, vocals), Eliza Carthy (violin, fiddlesticks, vocals), Angeline Morrison (vocals, autoharp, double bass) and features Martin Carthy on the album’s closing track
Angeline Morrison was also recently awarded the prestigious Christian Raphael Prize, supported by Cambridge Folk Festival. She is the fourth recipient of one of the most significant competitions throughout the country, for key emerging talent in this genre of music
The Sorrow Songs: Folk Songs Of Black British Experience is out October 7 on Topic Records with the vinyl release to follow in early 2023.

Jon Boden, Seth Lakeman, Ben Nicholls, Emily Portman, Jack Rutter Sea Song Sessions
Ben Hillier-produced Topic Records debut of maritime songs by leading British folk luminaries “supergroup”
‘Sea Song Sessions’ is a collection of British maritime folk songs and sea shanties, performed by a collective of some of British folk music’s leading lights : Jon Boden, Seth Lakeman, Ben Nicholls, Emily Portman & Jack Rutter.
The concept for the album came to them in 2021, when they were asked to prepare an evening of sea related songs for the Folkestone Festival. Boden’s celebrated work as frontman of Bellowhead (of course no strangers to sea -faring songs) and Ben Nicholls’ band, Kings of The South Seas (who play exclusively maritime influenced music), Seth Lakeman’s own extensive body of work from the South West as well as Emily Portman and Jack Rutter’s sizeable oceanic repertoires, all formed the natural foundation and inspiration for these acclaimed musicians to conceive the Sea Song Sessions
The album was produced by seasoned veteran Ben Hillier (Blur, Depeche Mode, Elbow) and recorded live over two days at Agricultural Audio, Hillier’s own studio in the Sussex Downs, constructed within a giant farm building made entirely out of hay bales.
Unsurprisingly from the oldest independent record label in the world and an undeniable steward of Britain’s folk music, Topic has a long history of recording maritime/sea songs, this record serves as a mooring line to their classic releases of the ‘60s and ‘70s (‘Sea Songs & Shanties,’ ‘Blow The Man Down,’ etc).
In the early 80s, the Ansambl Mileta Petrovića was formed in Nis, in the Serbian part of the former Yugoslavia. Mile Petrovic and his band were pioneers and modernised gypsy music by replacing the accordeon and brass with synthesizers and guitars. The result is a psychedelic cocktail of traditional rhythms and spaced out sounds. As ‘Veseli Romi’ or ‘The Happy Roma’ they promoted their irresistible dance music. This album contains some of the best boundary pushing tracks the band recorded between 1986 and 1991.

Bassist William Parker and drummer Anders Griffen each made their debut recordings with saxophonist Frank Lowe, albeit over 20 years apart, and originally made their musical connection at the turn of the millennium. Parker works with Fowler in Mahakala's inaugural band, Dopolarians.
These two titles were both recorded on the same day in August 2021. The music is completely improvised except for a couple melodies Fowler brought to the date - heard on "Kongerei" and "Marker" - but Parker and Griffen were not privy to these. Working together for the first time, the trio finds an easy rapport and takes advantage of the unlimited space afforded to them while exploring a range of textures and dynamics and everything from serene to aggressive.

On the last afternoon of Arts for Arts’ iconic Vision Festival in 2021, I found myself standing next to pianist Matthew Shipp and drummer Andrew Cyrille as William Parker’s closing group took the stage. Matthew and I were casually chatting as the stage 5lled with what would ultimately be the largest group of the festival that year. The music started and the bandstand spouted 5re from beneath as it lifted o7 toward the stars. Every person in the venue 9oated in space together through almost an hour of spiritual, emotional, cathartic joy. It was music so raw and frenetic that, had I had a horn with me, It would have been di;cult to 5ght the urge to join them uninvited.
Steve and I had already been planning a couple of studio dates later that year in Brooklyn at Jim Clouse’s Park West Studios. After hearing this music, I wanted to recreate the feeling I got from listening to it. The visceral experience. Not the sound. I can’t remember what it sounded like. That wasn’t the point. So as Steve and I started planning for our upcoming session, we set out to put together a group to generate that same kind of energy: The group: Zoh Amba (who had played on William’s Vision set), Ivo Perelman (who we asked at the last minute to come by for a day and he ended up on both days of the recording), Matthew Shipp, William, Steve, and me.
This was the 5rst and probably last time this group of musicians will have ever come together in this con5guration. As is our custom, we didn’t discuss much about what the music would be before Jim Clouse started recording. This record documents our second full day together, presented in order. From soulful balladry to demented rock music to an otherworldly march, the musical tension is palpable throughout. As is, I think, the pure joy of creation that animated our time together.

FULL POWER HAPPY HOUR
New LP Out Nov 4, 2022
Featuring the singles ‘Siblings’ & ‘Measurements’
“It’s hard not to be charmed by the golden hour hues” Raven Sings The Blues
“Catatonia style off kilter vocals, mixed with jangly indie folk and the perfect sense of The Velvet Underground under production. This first single from their forthcoming album is an absolute must!” Janglepophub
BIT OF BRIGHTNESS
The second album from Brisbane Meanjin indie folk five piece Full Power Happy Hour builds on the immense promise of their 2021 self titled debut, adding a gorgeous tinge of alt country elegance to their inherent feel good jangle pop foundations. This musical bed assembled collaboratively allowing the band’s true spirit to shine through proves the perfect foil for frontperson Alex Campbell’s compellingly personal lyrics documenting a tumultuous period in their life, an at times fraught journey recast into beautiful, eloquent art. The 10 songs veer from bright, upbeat toe tappers to plaintive, introspective ballads, but flow together superbly due to the group’s underlying camaraderie and fast blossoming chemistry. At times reminiscent of forebears like The Go Betweens and The Clean, with flourishes of Lucinda Williams and contemporaries like Big Thief and The Weather Station, Bit of Brightness is 100% Full Power Happy Hour and one utterly beguiling aural experience.

LP on 180g white vinyl, standard sleeve, printed inner sleeve. 8 minimal is maximal salvos in 23 minutes that coalesce into a stun blast soundtrack for today’s shattered society. New York City’s artistic skyline may have changed immeasurably since the last century, yet the minimalist post punk/synth-pop duo vividly gouge into the city’s immortal outsider spirit and underground cultural tropes, set against a pulsating backdrop of modern apocalypse. Laced with evocatively concise and lacerating lyrics delivered detached and deadpan, ‘Closure’s spine chilling onslaught of towering guitar shrapnel, ethereal metallic synth melodies and cold electronic turbulence comes infused with shades of New Order and Jesus And Mary Chain; the kind of modern disco and post punk grooves that pillaged New York clubs in the 80s. Inevitably, the penetrating spirit of New York electronic trailblazers Suicide haunts the new record with its subterranean gravitational pull, having previously manifested physically when the two -piece befriended the late Alan Vega leading to collaborations, support spots and Artaud now co -curating the ‘Vega Vault’ of unreleased material and co-producing and mixing the 2021 lost ‘Mutator’ LP.
